Never mind the fact that teachers are just regular people- some conservative, some left leaning. There’s barely time to teach the to read and do math. The only time I’ve even seen LGBT topics come up, it’s because a kid has asked a question. We just don’t want them to be assholes to people other than them…. That’s it. Some teachers have “line 1 and line 2” instead of “girls line and boys line” and that’s the extent of the changes to the gender norms.
I have exactly one non-binary student. Do I think a first grader really understands pronouns? No, not really tbh. But you know what? They’re a happy, well adjusted, and outgoing kid who obviously dresses themselves in the morning. If they get older and change their mind, I’m confident they’ll be just fine. Ben’s basically saying that as soon as “very young” (🤦‍♀️) teenagers learn what sex is, they’re no longer “innocent”, that they’re corrupted. That’s the type of thinking that leads to teen pregnancies and STDs. It also causes people to think that sex is shameful, something to be hidden, a moral sin. Treating sex like something to be hidden and to feel ashamed of is incredibly damaging. It’s ridiculous.
Also, Ben - you really think teenagers these days don’t know anything about the existence of sex?!

I didn’t REALLY get into non-cisgender intercourse. If a question came up, I described it very analytically. So if anal sex was a question, I acknowledged the existence but never condone nor condemn the act. I also encouraged acceptance of all; no attacking people for biased reasons. Ben is conflating and overreacting to sarcastic songs and quotes out of context.

I was homeschooled because my family was heavily involved in Christian fundamentalism. I wasn't allowed to attend public school because it was secular and taught evolution and the private Christian schools around were too expensive. I grew up facing severe religious and sexual abuse. Now I suffer from panic disorder and severe anxiety and it affects every single aspect of my life. Somehow I managed to adjust in college and now I am starting my Ph.D., so thankfully I was able to catch up in terms of education, but socially I struggle and I largely isolate myself. Homeschooling is in many ways evil and a lot of the abuse that happens goes unnoticed. Thanks for touching on this.

I learned the bare minimum about actual sex from school. In 5th and 6th grade they explained menstruation, ejaculations, condoms, "put the parts together to get pregnant but be safe with a condom", and that's about it. Keeping me "innocent" has never done me any good at understanding the important aspects of life. When Ben says innocent, he means ignorant. Innocence is robbed through abuse, not education.
Now, initially I thought that educating about dildos/butt plugs/lube, things relevant to real sexual interactions, was weird, but that's because my sex ed failed me.

One of my friends didn’t know how baby’s where made until sometime in high school. That’s means if she got raped she might not know that could lead to her being pregnant. Second she might not understand what just happened to her. Sex ED in the US at least where I’m from it is optional and many parents opt out but never tell there kids anything. The most they say at times is don’t talk to men they are all scary, your not allow to date that leads to sex which makes you unholy blah blah ( yet they don’t describe what sex is and bounce around it ), ect… They scare their kids away from sex without fully explaining what sex is. And many times they assume that boys will end up assaulting girls or something and it’s normal. They know that people will eventually discover what sex or masterbation but don’t teach them how to properly do it and what consent is, where the proper places are if you do do it, and who to talk to when something happens.

Re: things like dildos, lube, etc not being taught to minors- yes it is, and it's pretty normal for sex education. My mom was a guidance counselor who did sex ed and she did all this and more, and it was in a very poor NYC school. It was very necessary because kids were already having sex even by freshman year. Shapiro should leave topics like this to professionals.
