And not for the government by the government like today. 40-60 cents for a gallon of gas. Seems pretty good to me. People saw you as your appearance. This was my favourite song in 1970/71. I’d spent years of being sexually abused by Catholic Brothers and a Priest at a NSW Australian boarding school and under the dreadful pressure of a Mum who had Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I made the decision to leave Australia for a Government job in Australian administered Papua New Guinea. Melanie’s song voiced words that spoke to how my life (not song) had been wrecked and gave me inspiration that I could make “everything alright”. I did. It took many years, study and professionally qualified, before I reached happiness., Lived around the World but happily back in Australia now. In my 70’s now and still listening still listening to and loving Melonie’s songs! Thanks Melonie!
Hi Melanie. Warm greetings from Australia 🦘 Thank you for the memories. Lay Down was also a classic. You are and always will be a STAR. I hope you're well. God bless you Melanie.
@@jon2849 thank you Jon. She died too young. How uncanny. I only just plugged into Melanie Safka last night via UA-cam. She died 24 January at 10pm. It is 25 Jan today as I write this. I was 1 in 191 but I remember that song in my childhood, and I love to remember my childhood , it was a good time with a lot of good music !!! Thanks for show us !
I work at a large Commercial Insurance Agency. Last year there was a contest and whoever won got to choose the music that played over the PA system. Basically they got to pick which station. Our C.O.O. won and he picked a really esoteric station that plays a lot of unusual stuff. This song played today and brought back all kinds of memories from my childhood.
It’s a comfort to know that many from the current generation are discovering all this wonderful art. And, as much as their contemporary music is a part of their modern lives, the artistry, storytelling, vocals and musicianship of our generation’s stars is making quite an impact, and many converts, to genres they’d never have known, but for their reactions. It’s a pleasure to relive these performances and share their excitement upon first-hearing.
I just read the news, and I am sitting here crying listening to Melanie as if I might lose her if I don't. I know, though, that she will never be forgotten, and I say farewell but not goodbye. RIP dear lady.
As a wee girl in Scotland I knew Melanie's voice singing this song long before I knew her name. And more than 50 years later her voice and song is still magical. Thank you.
My Mother passed November 29, 2017. She loved to sing. I inherited my voice from her. People would ask us to sing at events. I was shy and still am. I am now 34. When I hear this song it reminds me of when I get frustrated during difficult days. Then I smile. My Mother lives in my heart and is with me in spirit until I meet her again when my time is up. Thank you Melanie Safka. Thank you for uploading this beautiful song. ❤
Lisa Marie If you like singing and you say you are shy, Well just sing and to hell with what anyone else thinks about your singing, It’s not their life it’s yours to enjoy and do whatever you want with it, Do you tell people how to enjoy their life, You only live once and it’s a very quick life so enjoy it the way you want to. If you have a beautiful voice sing to your hearts desire.

I am so heartbroken to have just heard of Melanie's passing. A brilliant songwriter and singer. Your music was part of my childhood, Melanie....such great memories...rest in peace sweet angel.
I’m only 51…discovered her in 1989 and fell in love with her voice and message. We need more of her today in this troubled world. Goodbye and farewell sister!!
Lay Down, Brand New Key, Beautiful People, Look What They’ve Done to My Song, etc. Wow! Such unique songs! Haunting melodies, sung with such a passion. There was a fascinating innocence, and childlike quality about the music. Watching her sing, Melanie sparkles with those beautiful eyes. Honestly, it’s like musical, and visual perfection! No gimmicks, no simulating sex, no diversion from a talentless act( we know who they are). Just mesmerizing talent.
Loved Melanie since I was in h.s...I saw her at the bottom line in NYC and just knew that if I had a baby girl, her name would be Melanie💜💜💜my beautiful Melanie is now 31 and I have been so blessed!🩷🩷🩷

I had just hit puberty when your first song hit the radio and I could see and I could feel what you were singing about even then. Thank you.
It's really a blessing to find that rare artist who can sit down with a guitar and just mesmerize you. Melanie, Harry Chapin, Bobby Gentry, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and just a few others have that power. Melanie in particular is special to me. Her personality just shines through, and you just know that she is someone that you would like to have for a friend. It just makes me happy to hear her voice. Also, takes me back to a simpler time. Melanie's voice is like comfort food. I loved music from my childhood. I have loved music from phase of my life, but some artists you just always keep with you. I will be listening to Melanie for the rest of my life. And it has to be an artist's dream to know that, if you just got through to a few people this way, it was all worthwhile.
Melanie...class act!!! I was 13 when I bought this 45. And still have it!! A Brand New Key has always been a fav of mine. Melanie I would have gladly went skating with you anytime. Still loving you after all these years. Thank you from my heart.
I grew up listening to this.. Your beautiful powerful unique voice brought me so much joy.... While working a night shift last night, i had my traditional Jools Hootenanny on in the background, i never miss it, even while working, and i suddenly heard your voice singing this... I ran to the tv room, phone in hand, video at the ready, tears streaming down my face, happy ones, with the biggest smile throughout. I just wanted to say seeing you totally made my night shift and a great start to 2020.xx Much love, xx
For me, a teen in the era of this song, it still is about that era. There was no dominant style. We had folk, we had rocknroll, we had jazz, and so on. No one knew where it would go. That was a special time.
Love you Melanie, you were so beautiful inside and out. You are now at rest with Peter. Keep on singing I love you and was hoping for some new material.

I remember this when I was a kid and now to hear it again is a little piece of heaven. What a voice!
Alll I can say is you beat the bastards you are a hero , others gave in and did not survive I really mean all the best to you xxxx
Those were not Catholics. That was a Viper's den of Satan worshipers. Satan worshippers love inhabiting righteous places and doing their evil bidding.
Thanks. They’re all dead now but I’m not and yes, I beat the trauma they inflicted on me, am happy, but not a hero, just a lucky survivor.
@@gregturner_awod glad those evil demons are dead. Glad you survived and made a good life for yourself.
The best revenge is living well ~
Hi Melanie. Warm greetings from Australia 🦘 Thank you for the memories. Lay Down was also a classic. You are and always will be a STAR. I hope you're well. God bless you Melanie.
RIP at 76
@@jon2849 thank you Jon. She died too young. How uncanny. I only just plugged into Melanie Safka last night via UA-cam. She died 24 January at 10pm. It is 25 Jan today as I write this. In any case, she was beautiful. If only we could all have that spirit. Take care and good luck. Big year for US elections in 2024. She won't miss that!
@@LoudandClearChastity 76 is not young. My Mom just passed away on November 8th she was 82. I'll be 58 in 4 days 1-28 I'm in WA USA
She had that earthy voice and also a real aura of presence. Also, she was gorgeous.
@Levi Langershank THUMBS DOWN.
Everybody is/was when they're that age. If she's still alive, she'll be a granny with all that entails. Life is so unfair!
yes janis joplin, had a raspy voice, am 70 and love this song,
She had two really memorable songs and performances. That's more than most people ever accomplish.
your sister is gorgeous she likes me
My favorite of her songs❤❤❤❤
Melanie gave so much and many great songs over these 50 plus years. A time rich with memories. I pray that she has an even bigger audience filled with angelic voices! Your love and passion carries on!
I'm 68 years old and Melanie has always been one of my favorites. Beautiful lady, and beautiful voice too.
And beautiful soul; an all round gorgeous human
So true Tim
@@HAL-9000. Ich antworte in deutsch: Melanie kam in mein Leben und Herz ❤ in einer aufregenden Zeit, da war ihr Song und ihre Performance das was ich brauchte. Die Sängerin ist so authentisch.
ditto - I was lucky to see her at the Royal Albert Hall in the 70s
True, I'm keeping the vinyl for my granddaughters when they are old enough to understand it...
I just read the news, and I am sitting here crying listening to Melanie as if I might lose her if I don't. I know, though, that she will never be forgotten, and I say farewell but not goodbye. RIP dear lady.
Un ange de plus Au paradis ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful ! Cette voix et cette chanson n’ont pas changés depuis toutes ces années...
Thank God we have clips like this! I'm sure that she's singing loud and proud in the heavenly choir😇
Ms Melanie has passed away. Condolences to her family. A great talent.
Thank you, Melanie, for the wonderful music that I've been loving since long ago. You are a joy to behold.
Ditto to all this love of her music. Seeing her play at Woodstock was so special for me. Love her so much through all her years. RIP lovely lady.
As a wee girl in Scotland I knew Melanie's voice singing this song long before I knew her name. And more than 50 years later her voice and song is still magical. Thank you.
She doesn't get the praise that she deserves.
I agree I have been playing this song since my Pomeranian Wolfgang died …….
When a song is writen with soul and heart it can change people. This song made me more honest and humble. Thank you Melanie
Another piece of the 60's/early 70's gone. RIP 1/23/2024
Hearing this song and seeing Melanie brought back why I was in love with her in 1971.
Copy that! Beautiful people, where have they gone...
me too, real love
Chase, I still am at 74.
She recently said chase was my biggest regret
My Mother passed November 29, 2017. She loved to sing. I inherited my voice from her. People would ask us to sing at events. I was shy and still am. I am now 34. When I hear this song it reminds me of when I get frustrated during difficult days. Then I smile. My Mother lives in my heart and is with me in spirit until I meet her again when my time is up. Thank you Melanie Safka. Thank you for uploading this beautiful song. ❤
Lisa Marie
If you like singing and you say you are shy,
Well just sing and to hell with what anyone else thinks about your singing,
It’s not their life it’s yours to enjoy and do whatever you want with it,
Do you tell people how to enjoy their life,
You only live once and it’s a very quick life so enjoy it the way you want to.
If you have a beautiful voice sing to your hearts desire.
Let your voice keep your mums memory alive. Big love to you :)
@@jasbarsoph You are so right! Thank you for your beautiful words of encouragement! I have a microphone and amplifier, same one my Mother and I used since I was 15. I now plan on doing just that! Thank you!!! xoxox 😘
@@snudge9626 I intend to! 😊 Thank you Alan! xoxo 💖

I think you should do a recording and put it on your UA-cam page and that is a great way to give your confidence a hell of a boost and you have a cool name to go go with that recording.
I am so heartbroken to have just heard of Melanie's passing. A brilliant songwriter and singer. Your music was part of my childhood, Melanie....such great memories...rest in peace sweet angel.
I love the warble in her voice. Always did. I was 11 in 71'
Hi Julia
You must be the same age as myself..
Yes, great vibrato! We're the same age.
Same Same
me too. born in 60
RIP Melanie thankyou for your wonderful music 🎵
Just mesmerizing talent.
yes, and no auto tuning.
No-one betters The Rolling Stones' songs ... except this woman's version of Ruby Tuesday ...
She,s my cousimaa
Such a beautiful pure voice
God do I miss this this kind of music. Thank you for the memory
So do I ...
R.I.P. Melanie, sweet-beautiful songbird, thanks for the music

Loved Melanie since I was in h.s...I saw her at the bottom line in NYC and just knew that if I had a baby girl, her name would be Melanie💜💜💜my beautiful Melanie is now 31 and I have been so blessed!🩷🩷🩷
Beautiful story! Thanks so much for sharing this!
What an amazing voice. Haven't heard this in ages. First time I've seen her sing it.
I have 1 of her albums right here in my kitchen i listened to her on my portable radio in the 1970s brings back memories for me
RIP🙏🌹Melanie😢 I saw you, for years, with your son in a concert in Dortmund, Germany. So lovely, so great. Thanks for your music😊now you can sing with the angels ❤❤
This makes me very sad. Peace to her spirit.
Pure talent, loved from the 60's to 2020's. OMG we are getting old. Thank you for the music. xx ❤
Me too😁...I was nearly 7 when a conglomerate album called "Summer of 72" came out.
My mom had Melanie playing often in our house growing up in the 70's. I have never forgotten the words or the songs. I force-share them to young people that i talk to lol. Dont know if they get it at first, but many times Ive seen them relink them somewhere, haha. Always makes me smile.
So sad too. Beautiful voice and so talend..Hello from France..
Fifty years and I still love this girl more than life itself. Even named my daughter after her.
REST IN PEACE MELANIE!
Oh I was a 6 year old boy at 71 🙂 Thanks God, these times the radio played good songs lot of years, and this songthey played a verry long time - maybe more trhe 10 years. In Bavaria. And I love the song so much. During all the times.
Thank YOU!
R.I.P. Melanie. You have given us such beautiful songs. After many decades they still are touching me to the heart. Thank you so much and farewell Melanie. Enjoy a beautiful journey
Not, perhaps, one of the greatest guitar performances of all time... BUT certainly one of the most fabulous vocal performances of all time! And certainly a classic video of one of the truly great live musical performances of all time! 'Onya Melanie! Love you forever! 😁
Technical prowess is not the point of music.
@@fractuss No... I do realize that... but it certainly doesn't detract from a performance either!
Btw, I wasn't knocking Melanie... far from it! (What part of 'one of the truly great live musical performances of all time' did you not understand?) 😉
@@theseustoo Sorry I came off a little testy.
@@fractuss Lol! No worries, mate! We all have our 'off' moments! 😉
"...well they tied it up in a plastic bag and turned it upside down ma...." sweetheart warned us that the world could be a very cruel place. Thank you Melanie. Thank you.
Ayyyy Melanie and Joni Mitchell are two of my all-time faves
You forgot Judy Collins ...
You forgot the best of all time…Eva Cassidy
Melanie...class act!!! I was 13 when I bought this 45. And still have it!! A Brand New Key has always been a fav of mine. Melanie I would have gladly went skating with you anytime. Still loving you after all these years. Thank you from my heart.
Fabulous artist. She was one of my favorites!
I just wanted to say seeing you totally made my night shift and a great start to 2020.xx
Much love, xx
@shaun king it's about what the singer's voice does to your soul
@@FrugalAnimalKeeper ..Teach that damn idiot ! !
Kat Milford Me too. It never gets old.
How powerfull is this performance. Amazing
Your not the only one who miss those days, but I was doing it to the sounds of car stereo installations,a time never to be repeated.!
We now have tears for Melanie. May she rest in peace and the perpetual light shine upon her.
For me, a teen in the era of this song, it still is about that era. There was no dominant style. We had folk, we had rocknroll, we had jazz, and so on. No one knew where it would go. That was a special time.
She was a candle in the wind. She'll sing with the Angels in Heaven from now on! Til we meet again. Good bye.
May she rest in peace. She was a talented artist.
Beautiful sou! Awesome folk artist! Awesome voice and the way she uses it!
You were a beautiful woman, inside and outside. Thanks for all the music! RIP Melanie
beautiful..I saw Melanie live twice and got to meet her also, still a great singer and a really nice person. thanks for the memories..
Oh Mike ..that must have been awesome ??!!!!!!!
hey K8, it was awesome, and only around 10 years ago. her voice was still great :)
One of my favorite female singers of the 70s great singer song writer, and beautiful with it, such a sad loss when i heard the sad news.
Love you Melanie, you were so beautiful inside and out. You are now at rest with Peter. Keep on singing I love you and was hoping for some new material.
Was half crazy till Melanie let me know it wasn't me or her, it was those in power... ...miss those days, now, miss you too Melanie...guess I'll hear you singing in the wind blowing in the trees...
Rest in peace sweet soul. You gave us smiles and tears as we sang your songs with you.❤🙏🎶
