i dunno, melanie never mentioned that in all the interviews she gave about this song. she did mention it wasnt a reference to anything specific, more about her drive and focus after her father was teaching her how to rollerskate and how she'd always fall when she realized he wasnt holding her. she remarked the freudian imagery of keys and dicks was pretty well-established, but just came to her ex nihilo.

Sadly! I also know! I wore out more saddle shoes, ( gawd I LOATHED those shoes, narrow feet so mom wouldn't allow anything else, except for church, I solved the issue by becoming a bare-footed hippie...) I couldn't wait to get out of school to put on my roller skates in spring, summer, fall, do you also recall FOUR DISTINCT SEASONS! I miss them. Winter, my other joy, my toboggan! Didn't wax my surf board, nope, in early September I was polishing up that "greatest invention since the wheel" . Those were the daze huh?! Nice to meet another Melanie fan. Namaste Z.

@@eightinches3671She was definitely a solo singer, but maybe not a solo artist. It’s of no real consequence though, her backing band was just there to provide the music over which she sang. Did you make your dad an addict? No, of course not: he made his choices and choices have consequences. That is what life is about. You couldn’t have changed him and his behaviors would have affected you had you not made the choice to move forward with your own life. Many people doesn't realize Melanie Safka was at Woodstock, she's an original hippie from the 60's. IMO, even though she was called a poor man's Janis Joplin, she had that special quiver to her voice that brings out the heart and soul. No one can sing this song like Melanie, but I will say Maddy Poppy does a great job from American Idol, and I'm sure she would agree there is only one Melanie.

@@jiveturkey9993...Thank you for your kind reply, jiveturkey9993..It was definitely a "worse case scenario." My arm & elbow break, was one that docs had never seen. It was a "1st," and my elbow [multi-breaks in], made its way into a medical journal, in 1970. It took at least 6 doctors (from various countries), to fix ((as best was possible)), the multiple breaks in my arm. They did so, however, after the/my, "manipulation," set, I was released & sent home, only to be re-admitted 3 days later, for a "re-breaking & re-setting," of my arm.😢 Absolute trauma, to my 9 year old brain and the 8 months of physical therapy I went through, was torture. :/ To this day, I'm a distrustful loner, ((at 61)). If not for my faith in The Lord (since childhood), I doubt I'd still be here today.🙏 😇 🙏

If I were to create a list of the greatest forgotten songs or greatest forgotten music artists of the Classic Rock Era, I think that Melanie and this song (Brand New Key) would be near the very top of that list. Whatever happened to Melanie? Though the song is a folk rock melody, it crossed over on to the mainstream DJ plays back in the 1970s. Why have I not heard this song in years--decades??? If memory serves me correct, this song made it all the way to #1 or #2 on the Top 40 in America back in 1972. Perhaps one of today's music stars could grab some attention by "re-doing" this song, but then again, I don't know how anyone can improve upon a perfect track like this?
