if it wasn't for Maddie Poppe many younger people would have never had the chance to listen to this wonderful 1971 #1 hit by Melanie. Thanks Maddie & Melanie.
RIP Melanie!! Thank you for this song which I first heard as a teenager. Thank you for the many years of music which kept me listening!! Forever missed & forever loved. xoxo

I haven't felt so old in a long time. When I was a young child I fell in love with Melonies beautiful voice. As I matured I fell in love with her wonderful lyrics. Now at 66 years of age, the tears flow freely as I write this. Heaven has a new angel. I almost feel that I cant wait to join the great voices of my youth.
Sometimes I come here to cry. My uncle was a binge drinker. When he would throw one he would blast this song on repeat. He was an amazing guitar picker. I miss covering these songs with him ❤️
My biology teacher. Played this on her guitar at the end of class one day, with a soft beautiful voice.. it was straight out of a movie scene. It was during that last few minutes of class, the bell rang and most kids left but those who appreciated it stayed back to listen. ill remember this forever because of that day
I haven’t listened to this song in probably 20 years. The minute she started singing so was I. The lyrics just popped in my head. I consider this happy music. You listen and are immediately in a better mood
1971;Me,listening to this amazing song,on a transistor radio(in hospital with a severely broken arm)..It got me through a 1-month hospital stint,at age 10.Thank you,Melanie.❤👍I was dreaming the entire month,of roller skating(in my key skates),to this song.;)
1 month to a 10 year old is like 10 years to an adult. That's a long time in the hospital for a little kid. That must have been some serious stuff hard on your whole family.
@@jiveturkey9993...Thank you for your kind reply, jiveturkey9993..It was definitely a "worse case scenario." My arm & elbow break, was one that docs had never seen. It was a "1st," and my elbow [multi-breaks in], made its way into a medical journal, in 1970. It took at least 6 doctors (from various countries), to fix ((as best was possible)), the multiple breaks in my arm. They did so, however, after the/my, "manipulation," set, I was released & sent home, only to be re-admitted 3 days later, for a "re-breaking & re-setting," of my arm.😢 Absolute trauma, to my 9 year old brain and the 8 months of physical therapy I went through, was torture. :/ To this day, I'm a distrustful loner, ((at 61)). If not for my faith in The Lord (since childhood), I doubt I'd still be here today.🙏 😇 🙏
We spoke a few times and we were 2nd cousins. I first met you in the eighties at a family reunion(was to young to know you then), and a few times after. My Mom spoke highly of you and always blasted "Brand New RollerSkates" on Friday Nights while she got wasted THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES RIP
I remember the first time I heard this on the radio in autumn 1971. I had just been discharged perhaps only a few days before from a pediatric hospital where I had initially been diagnosed with a fatal illness and had not expected to see that wonderful autumn; the exuberance and joy of this song matched how I felt when I got home and it has ever since been a favorite.
I remember my grandmother sang this to me about twenty years ago and she asked me if I had ever heard it and I said I don't think so then about a week later we heard it on a show we were watching we just looked at each other and laughed 😂 Miss her so much RIP Melanie Safka and mama and thanks for being a part of my happiest memories ❤❤
I have always been *obsessed* with this song at such a young age and it truly fills my heart with emotions singing this to my newborn son. Can't tell you how many times this got me through singing this in the NICU with him whilst me and him being in the hospital for almost _two months_ at the same time. Sorry, know a lot don't really care go hear or read such things while listening to this but just felt really strongly on writing this! Especially to those going through hard times right now. Hopefully that's okay and you all understand! And also are having a great day!! 💕🥰
If I were to create a list of the greatest forgotten songs or greatest forgotten music artists of the Classic Rock Era, I think that Melanie and this song (Brand New Key) would be near the very top of that list. Whatever happened to Melanie? Though the song is a folk rock melody, it crossed over on to the mainstream DJ plays back in the 1970s. Why have I not heard this song in years--decades??? If memory serves me correct, this song made it all the way to #1 or #2 on the Top 40 in America back in 1972. Perhaps one of today's music stars could grab some attention by "re-doing" this song, but then again, I don't know how anyone can improve upon a perfect track like this?
Melanie making bank from all of the royalities. First Boogie Nights, then Family Guy and now Kids In The Hall. Best runner sketch of the new season for sure. Hope Motormouth is doing okay wherever he is in his bunker.
As far as I know, Melanie had three children, a son named Beau and two daughters (whose names I don't know). Beau also was a musician (guitar) and performer, and he toured with Melanie in later years.
On Christmas day, 1971, Melanie had another number 1 hit. The first one was Lay Down (Candles In The Rain) from June 1970. Look what they've Done to my song, Ma, and this. It was a clever little ditty with well written lyrics. Bouncy and bright, just like her. It was a year and a half of success for Melanie!
I feel better listening to this because it reminds me of happy summer nights playing in the sand and listening to the seagulls, waves and music playing in my grandma's tent
People use to say that's Janis Joplin and I would, no it not its Melanie. She's was awesome love all her song. And I can pick her voice out anywhere... love her!!!
I wish we could have a revival of NY folk music, which is what this is. Today's music is either over-produced & awful or it's hiphop, which is great if you like hiphop, but otherwise, not
My friend's grandma used to listen to this song a lot. One day we were on the phone and he said, "sorry about the noise, my grandma's listening to some weird song about new rollerskates" and we spent a whole hour looking for this song. I miss that guy, we haven't talked in forever

I rode my bicycle past your window last night I roller skated to your door at daylight It almost seems like you're avoiding me I'm okay alone but you got something I need Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I think that we should get together And try them out, you see I been looking around awhile You got something for me Oh, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car Don't go too fast but I go pretty far For somebody who don't drive, I been all around the world Some people say, I done all right for a girl I asked your mother if you were at home She said yes, but you weren't alone Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me

Mark McKinney too! I love him❗️♥️
Was this a Kids in the Hall sketch? I've been googling, haven't found it yet
My mom died yesterday, her name was Melanie, and she loved this song. Rest In Peace. 1970-2021
So sorry for your loss....my condolences to you and your family...Rest in peace Melanie
My SINCEREST prayers and condolences. Haven't heard this in years but I remember when it came out! Please remember all the good times with your mom and the more you think about her the easier it will eventually become but it takes time! So sorry for your loss.
So sorry! She was younger than me! Please think of waht Melanie says in her song "The Saddest Thing": "I'll just say thank you life for having been."
I'm sorry for your loss. It becomes easier to cope with as time goes on, but it doesn't mean that she means anything less to you or you to her.
condolences 🙏🏻
My mom use to sing this song to me when I was a kid. She was such a character. I had the best childhood ever, thanks Mom!💗
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mom. I love her song Brand New Key. Your mom will always be remembered. May she rest in peace with our Lord and King
This song fits perfect for a compilation of people getting hurt

Wow!!!👏👏👏
Owe my lip
if it wasn't for Maddie Poppe many younger people would have never had the chance to listen to this wonderful 1971 #1 hit by Melanie. Thanks Maddie & Melanie.
That's because they don't know how to seek out good music and just listen to whatever MTV and American Idol shove down their throats.
RIP Melanie!! Thank you for this song which I first heard as a teenager. Thank you for the many years of music which kept me listening!! Forever missed & forever loved. xoxo
RIP Melanie! For me & many others as well, this song was a fun part of my childhood. I came across it when I got a bunch of my aunt's old records & immediately fell on love with it! Her voice is so unique! She will be missed! 💖
Rest in peace beautiful girl.
You have a brand new key that will open up heaven for you now. 🙏
I'd like to thank Kids in the Hall for making sure that the chorus would be on loop in my head until 3am. 🤣🤣
I can still see Dave Foley's traumatized face staring off...

Ahhhhh, same!
Dave Foley did a 4th Wall magick ritual to curse literally all of us
The only cure is to inflict it on someone else. To prepare them for the after times.
Thank you Melanie for spreading joy over the world. For me that 's the

Great childhood memories singing this song! R.I.P. Melanie ❤
This song just floods my soul with beautiful childhood memories.
I was born in 1956, I know all about those old steel skates 👍🏻 And I also listened to Melanie back in those days 🤗
RIP Melanie. So sorry to hear of your passing. I have you on my play list and listen to you a lot xxx Big love xxx
It was during that last few minutes of class, the bell rang and most kids left but those who appreciated it stayed back to listen. ill remember this forever because of that day
A simplistic song with an upbeat tune. Melanie RIP.
so sad I was hoping I didn't know this song cause I saw she passed but I know it of course. :( Pretty name btw Ruby. Lifes so short.
Not that simple! Think about it.
I bought this 45 as a kid , still loving it 40 yrs later.. I still have that 45 .
RIP Melanie absolute legend forever in our hearts. ❤
I literally just can’t get sick of this song
I believe this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

@@edosaberwarrior The bad version.
I’m happy you’re still here. ❤
I had this song stuck in my head before KITH and had just gotten it out before Motormouth Mike came along. That robo call hit though.
Such a fun song from a much simpler time. ❤
I remember my grandmother sang this to me about twenty years ago and she asked me if I had ever heard it and I said I don't think so then about a week later we heard it on a show we were watching we just looked at each other and laughed 😂
Miss her so much RIP Melanie Safka and mama and thanks for being a part of my happiest memories ❤❤
RIP Melanie
I have always been *obsessed* with this song at such a young age and it truly fills my heart with emotions singing this to my newborn son. Can't tell you how many times this got me through singing this in the NICU with him whilst me and him being in the hospital for almost _two months_ at the same time.
Sorry, know a lot don't really care go hear or read such things while listening to this but just felt really strongly on writing this! Especially to those going through hard times right now. Hopefully that's okay and you all understand! And also are having a great day!! 💕🥰
The kids in the hall show brought me here.
She gives me Loretta Lynn vibes. ❤️
RIP Melanie - loved this song, it came out while I was at high school
My Mamma told me years ago, this song reminded her of Dad, just thought I'd play it now their together ❤
I remember this song going to school in the old Sardine (our nickname for our old school bus). Gawd, now I'm 56.
Well I think Maddie Poppe on American idol listened to your comment.
This is rising again.

Emisunshine does a great version of this. :)
What happened to melanie? She got very old. She still recording. But her voice changed. She's beautiful inside and out no matter how old she is.
loved this song , time melts away just hearing it again
This song was way ahead of its time
Melanie making bank from all of the royalities. First Boogie Nights, then Family Guy and now Kids In The Hall. Best runner sketch of the new season for sure. Hope Motormouth is doing okay wherever he is in his bunker.
Rest easy Melanie, prayers to her family. We loved your mom. 1/24/24.
As far as I know, Melanie had three children, a son named Beau and two daughters (whose names I don't know). Beau also was a musician (guitar) and performer, and he toured with Melanie in later years.
R.I.P Melanie. I was shocked when I heard the news. You may be gone but your legacy will live forever. Sleep well sweet angel 🕊️🙏🏽🕊️🙏🏽🕊️🙏🏽
I love the look on dave foley's face.
I feel better listening to this because it reminds me of happy summer nights playing in the sand and listening to the seagulls, waves and music playing in my grandma's tent
People use to say that's Janis Joplin and I would, no it not its Melanie. She's was awesome love all her song. And I can pick her voice out anywhere... love her!!!
This song may be over 50 years old but it will always remain a classic 🥲😊
I remember this song when it first came out, glad to see it's still being enjoyed today, she has an amazing voice
I wish we could have a revival of NY folk music, which is what this is. Today's music is either over-produced & awful or it's hiphop, which is great if you like hiphop, but otherwise, not
Yes she had an amazing voice. It's different now. She's older than me. And I'm old.
"Some people say I've done alright for a girl." Well said...or sung.
bodensick I feel the compulsion to correct it too, but it would have ruined the flow
RIP, Melanie. you gave me smiles
My friend's grandma used to listen to this song a lot. One day we were on the phone and he said, "sorry about the noise, my grandma's listening to some weird song about new rollerskates" and we spent a whole hour looking for this song. I miss that guy, we haven't talked in forever
Wow I treasure these lovely songs back in the days my older sister and I use to sidewalk roller skating in our old fashion metal skates in the 70's throwback classic memories love and respect Maggie ❤😘
Always liked Melanie’s music. What a great talent. The songs are fun to sing along with.
Such a simple but great tune and lyrics. And now that it's 2023, modern roller skates have come a long way from needing a key!
I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone but you got something I need
Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together
And try them out, you see
I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive, I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl
I asked your mother if you were at home
She said yes, but you weren't alone
Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me

So wtf does "brand new key" mean?!?
