One of my earliest memories of my parents listening to Novello’s music on their record player some 70 years ago. 😢 So sad that his music is largely forgotten.
A memory of the Blitz that my mother shared with me. She and her best friend Freda went into central London to see a show at one of the large theaters. The star of the show was Ivor Novello, the famous matinee idol, actor and singer. These shows would be full of romantic and patriotic songs featuring audience singalongs. Toward the end of the show, the air raid sirens became to wail outside. No one could leave the theater so, to keep everyone’s spirits up, the star of the show, Ivor Novello, stood on stage throughout the night leading the audience in the popular singalongs of the period: If You Were The Only Girl In The World, The White Cliffs of Dover and, of course, We’ll Meet Again.
Sophie Bevan produces some lovely pianissimos - she takes risks. Toby Spence is also brave - i see his Wikipedia entry says that he was operated on for thyroid cancer earlier this year. Much to admire! The great singers of this music in the past understood the style. They knew how to put the song across through the medium of personality/ character. The Ivor Novello shows, as with those of Coward and Ellis, are rarely performed and perhaps a glimmer of that style is heard in old recordings.
Outstanding. This beats the crap out of rap and the other pure fecal matter called music today. Glad I love this kind of music. Mantovani did a wonderful instrumental of this years ago. :)
"WE'LL GATHER LILACS"........ THE VERY SPIRIT OF IVOR NOVELLO & OF MY BELOVED GREAT BRITAIN. Dr. Lolita Elizabeth Nehra Medical Doctor Singer-Songwriter........... Let us bring it all back......... MAKE BRITAIN GREAT AGAIN !
Does anyone know how I can buy a copy of this concert please? My father would like a copy as he thoroughly enjoyed it and hasn't stopped talking about it since he watched it.
A beautiful rendition of this song but absolutely no chemistry between the singers! Would like to have seen them look at each other rather than just a belated hand grab.

Novello was so young when he wrote this a genius of a man so unrecognised now beautiful sentimental music
I feel very close to the spirit of Ivor Novello and my late husband, Reg when I hear this.
I first heard this when I was nine years old and it never fails to move me to tears. Lovely performance of a beautiful song..
AH! UA-cam still has it! What a wondrous song. Best as a duet!
Wonderful! Keep the music of the great Ivor Novello ALIVE!!!

Fabulous and wondrous song. Such a magic performance. Love the vocal harmony!
I remember my mother singing this during WWII. She had three brothers in the British Army, so it was pretty poignant. Still brings a tear to my eye.
After a 'Buzz Bomb' had sorted out our house, and those adjoining, I remember my
darling mother singing this
This is THEE BEST version on this lovely song! A song of hope during WW2 as I recall. 😍🥰
This song had always made me sad. It's so moving
I'm a U.S. American but have just got to say no one does entertainment as well as the British in every genre. Movies, music, all of it.

We musent forget the brave SOLDIERS that fought in WW11
I WEPT
So did I! :)
Indeed, so did I. UA-cam is the best!
Charming and original. Music of a kinder, gentler age, far removed from the Beiber crap and Lady Gaga monstrosity.
COULD NOT AGREE MORE !
This music of a kinder, gentler age was during WWII, with yearning for the end of the war.
Couldn't decide between the 2.
How many times were we ranted about Ivor Navello

The best version of this song is by Webster Booth & Anne Ziegler.
EXACTLY
Gilbert and Barron for me.

They are being romantically reserved.
They both look so uncomfortable, ill at ease.
