As an Englishman, I LOVE that he sang part of this in Welsh. Welsh is a beautiful poetic language and the closest thing to the original language of the majority of our ancient ancestors throughout the whole of Britain, we should all treasure it.
Agreed: I absolutely love the rendition of the third verse in Welsh and the sound of the Welsh language in general, even though I only know a couple of words of it. I'm really looking forward to seeing Sir Bryn Terfel at the Royal Albert Hall in 2021.
@@jcusack3494 The majority spoke a linguistic precursor to Welsh. Modern Welsh speakers wouldn't understand much more of Old Welsh than I would Old English. That isn't the point.
1994, what a beautiful year. A Welshman could sing a verse of Rule Britania in Welsh and every one would love it. And Rule Brittania would be sung and ppl all over the world would sing along, oh and Hongkong was still free.
I well remember Bryn singing at the Last Night of the Proms dressed in Welsh rugby kit. Aged 24 at the time, I was singing along - the key was Ab major, not G. The men were all wearing white dinner jackets, very smart indeed. Now aged 53 and looking back on half a lifetime ago!
Kudos to Bryn for celebrating his heritage! P.S. I googled the Welsh lyrics: A Phrydain gododd ar alwad nef A chodi fu o'r tonnau câs Hwn oedd y siarter, y siarter drwy'r holl wlad, A hon yw cân yr engyl glan.

When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free: The dread and envy of them all. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak. Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame; All their attempts to bend thee down Will but arouse thy generous flame, But work their woe and thy renown. To thee belongs the rural reign; Thy cities shall with commerce shine; All thine shall be the subject main, And every shore it circles, thine. Err? I’ve been following Bryn since he (almost) won The Cardiff Singer of the Year competition, and the original bunch of Bryn fans have been following his career since he was a teenager winning competitions in the National Welsh Eisteddfods. How is it that you don’t think it’s our lovely Bryn? I’m Welsh, so to insinuate this isn’t Bryn is a real insult.
@Ynys_ Mon Chillax, I'm a Bryn fan, and I'm fully aware it IS him. He just looks a tad different here; I only became aware of him in the late 00s when I began to take classical music serious. It's a joke; deal with it, err?
@@plasticbucket Let's be honest, there are English people who wouldn't agree with him. Personally, I am Welsh first, British second, European not at all. And I enjoy belting out a good song.
Nope written in response to British people being enslaved by Barbary pirates, it’s a protest song to tell Britain to rule the waves so we won’t suffer such things.
If you want to criticise the British Empire you would be better off focusing on India. Of course, that would require historical knowledge, something which you lack

Bless you. 🙏🏼
God bless. Hope all well now.
27 years later this piece is still just magic..thanks Bryn
The British have every right to be proud of this wonderful song.
Bryn Terfel is one of the best opera singers in the world. His enunciation is perfect and easy to understand the lyrics

Yes it is good to see our Wagnerian baritone in action. I adore being both, but to be the best must be quite something..
His singing of this is the all time best! It’s so effortless.
Love Bryn. He has the best voice ever!
This and the one with Thomas Hampson are the best.
If this is not the best version ever, it certainly is among the most moving.

To reflect the genealogy of the British Royal Family, it would be great if two verses could be sung in German and Danish.

I wish he had sung all the verses in Welsh for the encore. The choir sang the chorus in Welsh, which was great to hear.
Just observe that sincere articulating mouth to the sacred verses!
