My friend had a good friend who was going blind with macular degeneration. Almost totally blind, but really bummed that he couldn't take his boat out. Our mutual buddy is no ship Captain, and Murpheys law the boat caught on fire, and they had to jump overboard. Be careful out there.
Hey man I'm not being mean. But you were definitely way to close to those rocks. I'm sure you learned a valuable lesson. Never play with wind and rocks bro. The lund boats are tough as nails. You got lucky. With all those electronics on there this never should have happened. 6 ft or less on the windy side of rocks is definitely a rookie move. Glad you're safe.
The damages on your boat are about 1/4th of how beat up my 1995 Lund Pro-v currently is. Goes to show how tough Lund boats are. Could you imagine being in a fiberglass boat while that happened?!
He just wanted another boat and get the insurance to pay for it… with livescope, and spot lock and you didn’t saw the rocks? For people like you, we pay a lot more in insurance every year.
Yea i went fishing for an entire season on a big piece of dock styrofoam.. i just dug it out a little in the middle and v’d the bottom a little then paddled out in the lake.. it was pretty squeaky and everytime youd move apart of the thing would chip off…
sorry for your accident, but this video will be the calling card for those who mock Livescopers for paying attention to their screen to the point of paying attention to nothing else around them (like driving right into a rock island) glad you guys were safe, that's what's important...Full props to you for posting though, we all make mistakes, hopefully this stops somebody else from doing something similar!
Was in my buddies boat while he was staring at his livescope screen and we were in a strong river current ... drifted right into a Buoy mid ship! LOL. He said "I was staring at my screen and not watching our drift".

I couldn't watch much after the trolling motor shaft bounced up. This was like driving your car with your eyes on your cell phone. Guaranteed; if you didn't have your Livescope, this would't have happened.
Don't ever buy an I/O, get an outboard. Always carry two anchor systems one galvanized and one aluminum. Have flares and a flare gun with ample extra flares. A marine radio is a must including a membership to seatow. Forget about all your fancy electronics until you take a Coast guard approved boating class. When you take that class make sure you pay attention and take notes. Buy a good chartplotter and learn how to proficiently use it. The chartplotter will have circles with red lines through it indicating it is a dangerous area. do not, and I repeat, do not go in those areas. Make sure you set your chart plotter for an audible warning beep in foul areas. When you hear that beep, turn around and go back. Good luck 👍
Following... and thanks for sharing the experience. Storm winds flipped an aluminum dock over at a resort I was staying at and docked. Dock legs doing comparable damage to my 99 Lund on the hull side, rub rails, transom exterior and cover. I am navigating a claim with Allstate now myself.
Living basically on Lake Michigan most of my life, I've seen a lot of these situations. Seen numerous boats that misjudged the harbor navigation lights, hitting the pier at 20+ MPH. In 2008, I was heading out with my fiancé to watch the fireworks and took a small wave over the bow. I kicked the outdrive up a bit and hit the gas to bring the bow up until we could get on the downwind side of the harbor. Heard a loud clunk that was the coupler breaking. Wind was pushing us quickly to the rocks, but fortunately there was 1 boat 100 yards behind us and the saw what was happening immediately. By the time we were hooked up to them, we were 20 yards away from the rocks in 4-5 foot waves. Glad you are safe and sorry about the insurance woes.
Agreed, fortunately I am making progress with them (but it is getting totaled out). Once the insurance piece is all wrapped up I'll put out a shorter video on the resolution and things that I learned to hopefully help others if they find themselves in this situation either when on the water or working with insurance.
Alex - too bad about the damage. I have a similar Lund, but the 1950 model and outboard. On the plus side, for a 2000 model, that boat was in great shape. I don't think there's any way they can make that side look new again.
You should see the heavy gauge aluminum welded boats in the PNW. They get beat up quite a bit on rocks. Lots of dents. Any holes are welded back up. No rivets.
Wow, glad you guys are ok and were able to make it back. Be safe out there, at least it happened towards the end of the season. Can't wait to see the ice fishing vidz!
Thank you! Yes, it forced me into ice season mode a bit early, but I have no problem with that. And I guess shopping for a new boat in the Spring. The bright side, at least I don't need to winterize or store it over winter 😏
Not comparing brands or anything, but spot lock features are absolutely insane. My first/only experience with one was a Minn Kota on a 2072 SeaArk, we were fishing Chain of Rocks on the Mississippi in STL MO. Imagine the waves of an ocean combined with the raging speed of the river. That damn motor held us in place, boat loaded down with 6 people, in the current without an issue. It would occasionally get a bit off course but it would recenter. I was sold immediately and when I do get a trolling motor it's going to have anchor ⚓️
First off... Glad you and your buddy are ok. You handled that about as well as you could have. Sure there are things you could have done different but lesson learned. Glad the other fisherman was there to help pull you off etc.
I had something like this happen once. It went from nice to crazy wind and once I got into it I couldn’t use any motors and didn’t have an oar. I ended up getting the water and pushing the boat off the rocks just enough to then start motor and somehow didn’t hit one. It is a scary feeling and the water is so powerful it is hard to get out.
That is insanely scary, luckily you guys were not hurt. Good luck with the boat and your insurance company. Keep us all posted with how the insurance company handles this so we know who to or not to use, they already sound shady.
Glad you guys are okay. My suggestion would be put a VHF radio aboard with a proper antenna if needed and a emergency flar kit. Blessings to you and yours
Glad you made it out safe! That happened to me recently trying to get to a bass fishing area. The wind pushed me to the rocks and my water wouldn’t start when I did push it off the rocks so it was pretty scary alone.
Hope everything works out for you. This is why I have my Hobie kayak insured for $17k. By the time you figure price of replacement kayak 5.5k, livescope setup 3.5k, 6/8 rods at 500-600 each, trailer 1.5k, tackle 800, PowerPole 900, and all other mounts and addons. Easily at 17k replacement value.
I had a 22ft Sportcraft 222 Walk Around cabin with Twin 125 on the Stern - it was a 25K boat that was 2 years old - I had just gone through it and it was in better then new condition - I had just started a new business and took it to a dealer in South Florida to put it up for sale since I had no income yet - the dealer was to take it off the trailer and put it on the front of the lot - Next morning I get a call from the Police that they had found my boat in a ditch next to the Turnpike in WPB - I was not aware it was even stolen - it was totally stripped - per the wrecker driver - that was the third boat associated wi8th Boat World, the dealer that was found in the same place within a week - the insurance company said it had 16K damage and gave me a check for 11K that I could not cash until the boat was either repaired or the Loan paid off - I was with State Farm - I was told I had full replacement insurance coverage yet they took 20% off the since it was two years old - I also had a claim when it was broken into by the people next door and 2K worth of dive gear was stolen - they said it was sporting goods and was not covered even though the Son of the Branch told me it was covered when I bought the insurance - I had to sell the boat to someone in the bank lobby in order to use the money from them added to the Ins check to pay the loan off - I also had to add 1K out of pocket to do this - I later had State Farm refuse to cover my wife's car because it was still insured by them but in Texas and not Florida - I lost 24K on that one - and yes, I will never use State Farm for anything -
Back in the mid 1970's, I lost a rudder on my 24' Luhrs. Too many people at the marina were using battery chargers and that "ate" my rudder off at the post. I had Allstate ins at the time and they paid for the haul out and the new rudder. Since I replaced the rudder and did all the repairs they also paid for the new bottom paint for the entire boat.
Bro, stay off that big water till you get much much more experience please. And why didn’t you call the coach guard just would like to know. Is there a reason you did not shoot your flare gun off when you had other boats in sight?
22:19 Those lunds are way over priced for a rivet boat. If they total it look into a welded boat. Always get a agreed upon value when buying insurance. They will pro rate the original 15k . It was never agreed 15k or appraised. Good luck I have been there
Welded boats don't flex. I was sold a Brand New welded boat and the 3rd trip on Erie it had 13 broken welds. My riveted Lund has never blown out a rivet. They rivet airplanes for a reason. Metal must flex. The only boat companies that have welded hauls down pat are west coast boats.
I’d like a update on this. I also have progressive. When I insured my boat and the 3 graphs one with livescope they asked me if they were permanently on the boat. Since I mainly keep them on the boat besides ice fishing I said yes because I thought that would make them cover them if it was part of the boat. But my livescope bundle just like yours is removable along with the two graphs at the console I remove them all for ice fishing. Now I’m worried I made a mistake and should call them back and tell them they are not permanently part of the boat. I never thought it through. I just figured if they where part of the boat they would cover them and if they weren’t then they wouldn’t cover them. Like you said if they total the boat they’d want everything since it’s all “one package” if they are on permanently that’s very sneaky of progressive.
My buddy totalled his boat out after he hit a submerged cement Chunk wide open on plane..... progressive totalled it out and never once asked for electronics
Got my first boat last year... 2300 for 83 alumacraft. Still learning on how not to do damage to it. But one thing i learned fast is that the captain doesn't prioritize fishing over navigation. Especially that far out in iffy weather and next to rocks no less. Glad you made out ok. Could have been worst.
I am 71 and my girlfriend just got a boat on auction for only $1,200 with a 50HP Mercury. It's old! It's a 14' 1976 Crestliner Model: Muskie 550 tri-hull. So last week we took it out for the first time. I should have had a map of the river BUT you live and learn. Out not even 30 minutes I hit a rock pile that was under the water and chewed up the prop. Thank God I didn't damage the lower unit. I was actually just going about 10 mph because #1 it isn't MY boat #2 I know NOTHING about boating so I stayed about 75 yards from shore so that I wouldn't get to close and get stuck in weeds or run into anything. The biggest thing that day was learning how to get the boat IN the water then OUT of the water. You are not allowed to power up to your trailer so that wasn't an option. HOWEVER, next time we are going on a lake instead of the river and I DO have a map of the lake.
@Dennis_J._Aitken i remember my first time... being on the water is not the safest thing out there... that's why you have mandatory safety equipment 😆. I usually go to dec website for small lakes to look at topo map. I fish, so it gives me a general idea for both navigation and fishing strategies. Invest in gps sonar unit, it will have topo map for navigation but remember that it doesn't know about water levels. Tides add more fun to it. Watch other boats and do not go where they do not go. Note birds on the water, they will perch on logs etc...
Hope you have all the receipts for those add-ons. Usually if you have the receipt for anything you've added on to the boat and trailer you can prove it and they should pay you for that stuff. Good luck.
How's that "kicker" motor - working? How bout raising the I/O, lowering the kicker (looks fairly small/light) and using slightly in water to reverse out, no good?
Anything added to the boat AFTER your date the insurance was started would / should be able to be removed. It wasn't part of the $15,000. Think of it this way.... If you insured it for $15,000 and later put $2000 of electronic stuff and someone stole the boat, the insurance company wouldn't cover $17,000. They would say you should have upped your value. They can't have it both ways......but will try.
Wow! so sorry that happened to you. Please post an update of how Progressive was, I don't understand how the electronics, trolling motor, and other "accessories" have to stay with the boat. I have Progressive, but if they are acting like this with you, I'll be changing.
I like your bow setup. Just purchased a 19ft Sea Ray bow rider. Want to make a removable platform in the front to add a seat and my bow mount trolling motor
Glad you guys made it off the water safely! I got caught in a storm a few years ago and fortunately had time to tie-off to a tree. Dinged my boat pretty good but it was older so I cut my loses and wasn’t worth claiming. Live and learn! I agree that that it’s bs they consider your electronics a part of the boat even though they are detachable but, they have 1000 other claims they could care less about your situation your just another claim. I hope everything works out for you!
Just keep an eye for leaks on the transom seam on the inside, where the bilge is at. The rivets probably allowed it to flex. Whereas a welded seam may have cracked away from the weld. Insurance is a scam.
Wow, good thing you're okay. We all make mistakes, you can tell which ones in the comment section have made the big ones throughout time. That's why they feel the need to criticize others, karma can bite pretty hard to us who do. Good luck👍
Yes, almost didn't post it. But decided to swallow my pride and share what happened, hopefully something people can watch and maybe learn something from for themselves and/or be entertained by my accident. All good, no one was hurt and I didn't harm anyone else or their property, so I am good in trying to find the positive in it. Once the insurance stuff is figured out, I will be posting a follow up shorter video just outlining what I learned with the boat, what I would do different on the water, as well as my experience and learnings working with insurance, again hopefully helping anyone else if they unfortunately find themselves in a similar situation. Let my lesson help others is my thought 👍
Ouch, expensive lessen learned. Glad you guys are ok. Definitely believe you were under insured for the boat. Now as far the insurance company, it comes down to what your policy says... i insure with state farm and have never had an issue.
Hey Alex, what was the verdict or update with the insurance agency? did they want all the electronics? was Progressive good in the end? (I also have Progressive, so wondering if I need to change myself to a different company) Thanks in advance, and we're looking forward to some hard water fishing!
First of all I’m relieved you are both alive and not injured. I’m 69 got my 1st boat at 15 years of age. I own 3 boats currently. Ski Boat, Bennington Pontoon, & a Fishing Boat smaller than your. Major lesson is you don’t have enough respect for the wind. My Pontoon never would’ve left the dock in wind like that. Your boat and my pontoon are a kite in the wind. Depending on the launching ramp and wind getting back on the trailer. Is another decision. Sometimes it is best just to say we’re not going out. Yes, I have dented some feelings but in my opinion everything including my passengers safety is 100% my responsibility. My options on live scoping I will keep to myself. Your best outcome will be Progressive totaling the boat and letting you keep it. I had a 3 year old Pontoon get totaled because the marina storage building collapsed from the weight of Ice & Snow. With Allstate Insurance I came out smelling like a rose. But they canceled me because I had 2 claims in 25 years. The other claim was do to vandalism at the marina. Approximately 40 boats were vandalized over the weekend. My vandalism claim was $1,400. I am also currently insured with Progressive only on my watercraft since 2014 currently claim free.
Everyone runs to spirit island but leaves kings flat alone. Never see much on the graph but when trolling and I start moving slowly up the incline from 26ft up to 22ft I always get giants on the uphill troll. No one ever around me and it works year round. Deep tail dancers trolled at 1.7-2mph and your catching some hogs!😊
Just out of curiosity do you have a VHF and possibly a towing service in your area? I'm thinking what would you have done had the other boater not spotted you?
Sorry Alex, But you are obviously fairly new boater, you put yourself into a dangerous place. Lucky for you the boat did not suffer greater damage and sink. Then you would have been sitting on those rocks until rescued. It was pretty dumb. You fix the dents and scratches to your satisfaction at your expense, and live with it. Lesson learned, don't put yourself in a dangerous position next time. Sorry about being truthful.
Your calmness is what doomed you. Didn't want to ding your prop at the beginning and instead waited to sideswipe rocks and get buried. No urgency on your part. Sorry for the accident but bizarre.
That was hard to watch . Thanks dor sharing and reminding us that shit happens fast and snowballs faster. I feel for ya brother i was shouting at my TV USE the trolling motor get the live scope poles in the boat. Sometimes we learn some expensive lessons in fishing Sgut happens to everyone myself included. ✌️
I'm surprised how nice of shape it actually was. I'm been in the marine business last 10 years and in boats everyday. That boat was basically mint. Plus my boat is a 01 green lund that's mint so maybe I'm biased
Had a 2000 Ranger get totaled out had American Family for insurance electronics where junk my policy had 6000 for accrssories they wouldn't use it because the mounts for everything where screwed to the the haul . dont let them do that to you take the to arbitration.
OUCH! That stinks!! I will always help out a fellow person on the water that needs help and if something were to happen to the guy that helped us off the rocks in this video I would have in a heartbeat replaced it out of my pocket. Sorry to hear, but thank you for helping the guy out
Absolutely, watching it back is painful to watch. Once the insurance piece is all wrapped up I'll put out a shorter video on the resolution and things that I learned to hopefully help others if they find themselves in this situation either when on the water or working with insurance.
That was hard to watch . Thanks dor sharing and reminding us that shit happens fast and snowballs faster. Well glad you both are safe . And wonder why you have no marine radio and flares. Well lesson learned. Stay away from rocks no fish is worth you well being.
The boat is not totaled also they can not require you to keep the electronics in the boat. Unless they are going to pay you for the electronocs the value of the electronics above the 15,000 for the boat. Did you list any of the aftermarket accessories including electronics on your insurance or did you just list the boat and trailer?
Water breaking (white caps) with no water breaking (white caps) in the surrounding area always means shallow water. Getting oneself upwind and then allowing yourself to begin drifting towards the water breaking (white caps) is a bonehead move. You should have gone to the anchor first to stop your drift and start kedging yourself out to deeper water. You were lucky getting someone to tow you out, you could have been there with your boat hammering itself into aluminum recycling scrap.
Man, she isn't too bad all things considered. May want to save the hassle and keep it, or total + buyback on the insurance. Fixing all of that aluminum back to factory is going to cost more than 15k, I can tell you from direct experience on this one. Check with brick's boat works in Shakopee, they're nice people.
How do they know what electronics you have mounted on the boat? If there’s mounting holes or mounts for equipment perhaps that was there when you purchased a boat doesn’t mean it’s yours, sure seems like a scam to me.
The sad thing is that spirit island doesn’t have extremely drastic breaks to it. It’s pretty easy to see 7 feet of water let’s say and know that you are getting way too close. As for the tyee, you probably have lots of leaky rivets now. Whole situation is sort of sad, I’ve been fishing Mille lacs my whole life and would have never thought someone could do that. Do yourself a favor and ditch that I/o for an outboard on the next boat
Yeah that’s BS on the insurance company the fish finder that was originally on it is all they should get if that , , I’d say if it’s a big fight just to get it fixed , as it’s a aluminum boat , a good shop should be able to fix that boat back to close to where it was before the accident ,
Not sure why you have a problem with the electronics. Obviously the electronics would up the value of the boat and make it so it is not totaled so easily. They assign a value to the boat when it got in an accident not after. When the boat got in an accident it had all the electronics on it. No matter what you insured it for it does not matter. Values of items change lately it changes monthly it seems. You may be able to argue the video game systems were not permanent but the trolling motor is a hard to say it’s not permanent with 36volt batteries, charger and where is your other boat you mount it to? Every time I have ever insured a boat they ask about electronics and tell me if I add them make sure I call and add them to the policy. You obviously didn’t call and add them.
Progressive insurance is not a very good insurance company. They will try to screw you over whenever they can. Thanks for the video. The rock you were at, is that the Rock you can see from US highway 169?
Your boat is not totaled at all, most of that damage seems superficial at worst. The only challenging repair I see is pulling out that dent at the bottom.

Honestly... very stupid . Not worth it for a couple of fish.. gotta think LONG TERM
Of course it was, but that's not the issue at the moment
Bro, stay off that big water till you get much much more experience please. And why didn’t you call the coach guard just would like to know. Is there a reason you did not shoot your flare gun off when you had other boats in sight?
you call boat usa these days - not the coast guard
And btw that things not totaled. I have almost worse on one side of my tyee from leaving the boat on the dock in a storm. If it doesn’t leak run it!
How come you couldn’t spot lock?
My buddy totalled his boat out after he hit a submerged cement Chunk wide open on plane..... progressive totalled it out and never once asked for electronics
I hope everything works out for you I feel it had similar issues
Dang that sucks, glad no one is hurt but to see your gear getting beat up like that and nothing you can do sucks for sure!
Good luck👍
Thanks for sharing- lots to learn from this- hindsight is 20/20
Damn that was hard to watch. Yikes....
For sure! I might have to look into State Farm for my next boat 👍
Hope you have the stupidity clause on your policy.
Comparing the performance of a Lund Tyee to a pontoon boat is ridiculous.
A Lund Tyee is perfectly capable of operating and fishing in wind like that.
Lucky a friendly fisherman came by. Glad you're ok. New Sub
Yeah, so sad to now have to find another!
@@AlexTimmget an outboard this time
They are great boats. Can take a real beating. I have an 1850 as well but mine is outboard and is red. I would fix it and keep it.
Man that rescue boat was way nicer than me, aint no way id get that close to you.
Well some day you might need help. Wasn’t that close
@@slange455 it looked close lol, were you there? And I can promise you I will never get my boat stuck on a rock island.
Had a 2000 Ranger get totaled out had American Family for insurance electronics where junk my policy had 6000 for accrssories they wouldn't use it because the mounts for everything where screwed to the the haul . dont let them do that to you take the to arbitration.
I helped a guy that was washed up on shore on leech lake and it cost me a brand new stainless prop
OUCH! That stinks!! I will always help out a fellow person on the water that needs help and if something were to happen to the guy that helped us off the rocks in this video I would have in a heartbeat replaced it out of my pocket. Sorry to hear, but thank you for helping the guy out
That sucks. The prop on my boat is $1200. I would not be happy.
Scary 😱 main thing is you both are ok now hopefully the insurance company does the right thing
I feel for ya brother i was shouting at my TV USE the trolling motor get the live scope poles in the boat. Sometimes we learn some expensive lessons in fishing SHIT 💩 happens to everyone myself included. ✌️
Well glad you both are safe . And wonder why you have no marine radio and flares. Well lesson learned. Stay away from rocks no fish is worth you well being.
Bet you wish Captain Obvious was there to point out your proximity to the rocks.
The boat is not totaled also they can not require you to keep the electronics in the boat. Unless they are going to pay you for the electronocs the value of the electronics above the 15,000 for the boat. Did you list any of the aftermarket accessories including electronics on your insurance or did you just list the boat and trailer?
Slight dent & scratched stickers
Is all I see
Water breaking (white caps) with no water breaking (white caps) in the surrounding area always means shallow water.
If only you had (2) live scope transducers that would show you the water depth in front of the boat if pointed that way
I don't understand. Surely there is a radio on board
How sad! !! It could have been avoided.
The livescope just tells me what I need to know 😂
The sad thing is that spirit island doesn’t have extremely drastic breaks to it.
Also you should have insured all your electronics with the boat
Good thing it's not totalled. Good thing all are ok
I guess you needed more electronics and technology equipment to know enough to stay off the lake in windy conditions and away from rocks.
That's why you watch the chart plotter. NOAA charts show the underwater obstacles.
100%, my charts were off unfortunately and I wasn't paying enough attention to catch it, I assumed and shouldn't have
Yeah that’s BS on the insurance company the fish finder that was originally on it is all they should get if that , , I’d say if it’s a big fight just to get it fixed , as it’s a aluminum boat , a good shop should be able to fix that boat back to close to where it was before the accident ,
That’s a cool looking boat, even with the damage. 👍. I’d send it.
Survivability of that boat is pretty impressive
I was very impressed, I definitely will be getting another Lund for my next one
Progressive is a joke. Hopefully they don’t screw you over too bad. Glad you guys got out of that situation with no personal injuries.
Run it as-is. Chalk it up to boating around rocks lessons learned.
30k boat and no push pole?
I don’t understand why you didn’t just start the big motor and get out, rather have a damaged prop than a totaled boat.
Absolute genius
Progressive was very fair to me. In fact they let me take everything, all electronics, anchors, windlass, etc.
Rough waters always win......Sorry about the damage but it could have been worse....
💯 Inexperience and FFS 🧐
was that fishing or playing a video game.
Remind me never to let that guy use my boat😅
Progressive insurance is not a very good insurance company. They will try to screw you over whenever they can. Thanks for the video. The rock you were at, is that the Rock you can see from US highway 169?
Looks loke it didn't hold you wow
Your boat is not totaled at all, most of that damage seems superficial at worst. The only challenging repair I see is pulling out that dent at the bottom.
Repaint the boat in camouflage, it will hide the damage & look badass.
Ole bird shit island got another one . The big pond will do that to ya
Boat is far from totaled. That’s just normal wear really. A lot of ways this could have been prevented. Hopfully a few things were learned.
