I feel the holy spirit inside
See the light that freedom gives
I believe it's in the reach of
    Every man who lives
Keep as far away as possible
It's darkest 'fore the dawn (Oh Lord)
I turned the key, I broke it off
    And I crossed the Rubicon
He’s still preaching and always has been. The world is too absorbed to listen.

Well, I think this really is genius. Not just the lyrics, also the arrangement. This is ‘Blonde on Blonde’ filtered through nearly 50 years of touring, living, recording. Completely amazing. Knocks all contemporary poetry completely out the window, never thought it could happen!

    • @christopherhelton6999
      @christopherhelton6999 2 роки тому +3

Absolutely right! While the lyrics are definitely "mature Dylan," the musicianship is kind of reminiscent of Blonde on Blonde. It's basically a slowed-down "One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)." Thanks for that insight!

The expression ''Crossing the Rubicon'' refers to take a final decisión and asume it , whatever their consequences . Historically it's inspired by Julius Cesar when decided to face with one of his legions , the power of Roman Senate which supported his political rival and ancient almon Pompeyo . They were suspicious of the power of Cesar after his triumph in the Gallic campaign , because Cesar decided presenting his candidacy to Roman's Senate . The Rubicon River was the natural frontier of Roman Republic and according the Roman Law , no provincial governor could cross the Rubicon River in front of his troops , under pain of being declared a public enemy . When Cesar decided to cross the Rubicon , he pronounced the famous phrase ''Alea Jacta Est'' (The Die Is Cast) . It was the 49 b.C. Dylan's song has a lot of similutudes with the historical facts related in the lyrics , and with Cesar himself . Dylan himself had crossed a lot of times his own Rubicon and like Julius Cesar , even more , his empire will remains across the centuries .

Thanks.. I did know this, more or less..but wanted to mention, in False Prophet..after pondering it for a month.. found out Miss Pearl and Mary Lou are old songs.. country and blues...or vice versa, thought Id mention it here by way of other explanations. In False Prophet as with all of it's open to further levels of interpretation..which is but one of many reasons the man deserves that literary honor, the Nobel Prize.. so much in it, so many of them.. God knows about now America needs to rediscover the beauty of all our heritage.. the world also.

    • @blackcrow7049

I wrote a comment a month ago about Hello Mary Lou and Miss Pearl ; probably UA-cam isn't the better place to leave this kind of comments but who cares ?? I only try to relaxing me and talking about music is the better way that I do it . Hello Mary Lou is written originally by Gene Pitney , a traditional rock'n'roll songwriter . Ricky Nelson makes a cover too , even CC Revival on Mardi Gras álbum . And Miss Pearl is written by a Sun Records artist , Jimmy Wages , but it's a rockabilly song . Chris Isaak had covered with success , even Brian Setzer and Led Zeppelin (on a medley live in concert) . But that is the idea , Dylan gives the names of two women /two songs , but really are high quality classic standards from different music styles . In this song Dylan writes a quote about David Bowie ''I relic and frolic with all the Young dudes'' (the song that he wrote for Ian Hunter's Moot the Hoople in 1972) but I'm too skeptic about some reviews that have been written on some Dylan fan-blogs even famous music digital magazines because there isn't a loa to Bowie's song but an ironie about Bowie's bisexuality , since David Bowie wrote ''Song for Bob Dylan'' (from the amazin' Hunky Dory álbum) . Bowie in his song is like jealous of Dylan success , in fact he refers to Dylan as a female character , criticizing him for having been the banner of a generation and abandoning them all (we are in 1971) . First time Bowie performed the song during a series of BBC concerts in June '71 , he introduces the song as ''Song for Bob Dylan - Here She Comes'' ; Dylan never said a word about the song , but knowing how Dylan acts usually I think this álbum is the better place to do it , because in this álbum he makes a relate of the past in some way , about his tastes , influences , friends and non-friends , about himself , his fears , hopes ... but always with his feet into the present and with his mind on a uncertain future , talkin' a lot about the death (Dark Rider or I've Made Up My Mind To Give Myself to You or even some stanza of I Contain Multitudes) maybe because his age but the future it's not written at all . Long life to the Jack of Hearts !!!!

I feel the Holy Spirit inside and see the light that freedom gives
I believe it’s within the reach of everyman who lives
Keep as far away as possible - it’s darkest ‘fore the dawn
I turned the key and I broke it off and I crossed the Rubicon

    Lyrics:
I crossed the Rubicon on the 14th day
Of the most dangerous month of the year
At the worst time, at the worst place
That's all I seem to hear
    I got up early
So I can greet the goddess of the dawn
I've painted my wagon, abandoned all hope
    And I crossed the Rubicon
Well, the Rubicon is a red river
    Goin' gently as she flows
    Redder than your ruby lips
And the blood that flows from the rose
    Three miles north of purgatory
One step from the great beyond
I prayed to the cross, I kissed the girls
    And I crossed the Rubicon
What are these dark days I see?
In this world so badly bent
    I cannot redeem the time
    The time so idly spent
How much longer can it last?
How long can it go on?
I embrace my love, put down my hair
    And I crossed the Rubicon
I can feel the bones beneath my skin
    And they're tremblin' with rage
I'll make your wife a widow
    You'll never see old age
Show me one good man in sight
That the sun shines down upon
I pawned my watch, I paid my debts
    And I crossed the Rubicon
Put my hide up on a hill
    Where some happiness I'll find
If I survive, then let me love
    Let the hour be mine
Take the high road, take the low
    Take any one you're on
I poured the cup, I passed it along
    And I crossed the Rubicon
Well, you defiled the most lovely flowers
    In all her womanhood
    Others can be tolerant
    Others can be good
I'll cut you up with a crooked knife
Lord, and I'll miss you when you're gone
I stood between Heaven and Earth
    And I crossed the Rubicon
You won't find any happiness here
    No happiness or joy
Go back to the gutter, try your luck
Find you some nice pretty boy
Tell me how many men I need
And who can I count upon
I strapped my belt, I buttoned my coat
    And I crossed the Rubicon
I feel the holy spirit inside
See the light that freedom gives
I believe it's in the reach of
    Every man who lives
Keep as far away as possible
It's darkest 'fore the dawn (Oh Lord)
I turned the key, I broke it off
    And I crossed the Rubicon
Mona, baby, are you still in my mind?
I truly believe that you are
Couldn't be anybody else but you
Who's come with me this far
The killing frost is on the ground
And the autumn leaves are gone
I lit the torch, I looked to the east
    And I crossed the Rubicon

Think it should be "I painted my wagon 'abandon all hope"" which is a reference to Dante's inferno? (An Italian poet, from the 13th century)

Saw him on June 18th in San Diego...small venue...less than 3000. It's been 40 yrs since I saw him last...(with Joan Baez and Commander Cody). My cousin told me he was a shadow of himself. If that's true, I must love living in the shadows. He's like a fine wine or an old violin...sweeter with time. Crawl over hot coals to see his 'Rough and Rowdy Ways' tour...it's that good. It's been in my head every day since.

I am thankful for Bob's music. He, as well as his music are comforting and inspirational to say the least. There were so many nights I couldn't sleep as a result of an assault at gunpoint back in the 70's, so I would listen to Bob's music and it helped me greatly to be able to get through all those sleepless nights afterward. I also thank God that He gave me the strength needed to be able to pick up the pieces and go on and for saving my life that horrific night. 🙏💛
