This is as good as anything he has ever written. This guy is just astonishing. People have said, how many times, he has lost his way, sold out, is burned out, records too many covers, gives bad concerts, can't write any more. . . And then this. Jesus, he really is on another level. Some people were furious when he won the Nobel. Others said it was like giving an award to Mount Everest. He just is, a natural wonder. Don't ever die, Bob, don't ever die.

He's not only an amazing songwriter, but also an incredible singer. In fact, he's the most brilliant singer I have listened to. Many people say he doesn't know how to sing, or that his voice was squeaky when he was young, or that his voice is very coarse, like sandpaper, now that he's aged. But they don't understand anything. The magic about Dylan has always been his ability to convey the truth across his voice and songs. That's why people keep following him as a prophet 60 years after his debut. His voice has been changing since 1962 - think about Freewheelin, Nashville Skyline, Blood on the Tracks, Street Legal, Oh Mercy, Modern Times, etc. - but he never missed his capacity to transmit deep feelings to his listeners, because when you listen to Dylan, you feel that he's telling you the truth or something real. Actually, you know he's not performing a song, he's LIVING a song. He's teaching you the real essence of human being. And that's something priceless.

I know exactly what you're saying, but its to hard for me to wittle it down to just one song. Although this has be up there with the best. Especially with his voice nowadays at 80.
Edit: It could easily ride along with a Blood On The Tracks (Your A Big Girl Now, and so on). Full of emotion.. It wouldn't be out of place on Time Out Of Mind neither. Brilliant tune

Personally I love his singing just the way it is. I can't stand all the pitch perfect singing in pop music with all the constant & unnecessary key-changing - I find it unbearable to listen to. I much prefer people who just sing they way that they sing naturally even if it is considered bad singing (like Mark E Smith for example).

From East L.A. to San Antone
I don't think I can bear to live my life alone
My eye's like a shooting star
It looks at nothin' here or there, looks at nothin' near or far
No one ever told me, it's just something I knew
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
If I had the wings of a snow white dove
I'd preach the gospel, the gospel of love
A love so real, a love so true
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
Take me on traveling, you're a traveling man
Show me something I don't understand
I'm not what I was, things aren't what they were
I'll go far away from home with her
I traveled a long road of despair
I met no other traveller there
Lot of people go, a lot of people I knew
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
Well my hearts like a river, a river that sings
Just takes me a while to realise things
I have seen the sunrise, I have seen the dawn
I'll lay beside you when everyones gone
I travelled from the mountains to the sea
I hope that the gods go easy with me

Me and my nephew just got our tix for Bob. And I think back to 78 and my bitter row with my mother who was sending me off on a French exchange
which meant I was missing Bob in Blackbush.
I was 16. And furious. I was missing Bob. Bob was getting old. I would never get to see him again.
And all for some dumb ass French exchange.
    Fuck me.
I do remember my sweet sister Eileen sending me clippings of the reviews.
    But hey, guess what?
I did get to see Dylan again.
About two dozen times and counting.
And he is always fascinating, always challenging, always brilliant.
Everything you would expect from a man of such genius.
And that's not a word I use lightly.
Shame we didn't leap with the required speed this time.
So while we got good tickets, we didn't get THE tickets.
And as I said I am going with my nephew.
And ideally you need to be on your own to pull off one's usual tricks to make the necessary enhancements to the experience.
Bob does his bit. So I gotta move too. The two of us gotta ensure that this is spectral. This is art.
It could be some god forsaken tragedy that helps out but usually it's just excess.
Someone has shitloads of cash and connections and they don't get it together to occupy their ringside seats.
They don't appreciate what they have.
    And what do they have?
    Seats.
    Kevin's seats.
My enthusiasm gives me the artistic equivalent of squatter's rights.
    I need to be here.
I was born to be here.
The Gods demand that I be seated there.
    These are slightly controversial views.
They do offend a certain type of person's sense of order.
An order they build their worldview on.
    And I challenge its foundations
That Northern bouncer at Leonard Cohen.
    He didn't get it/
Leonard and I had just been talking.
    I'll say that again.
    Leonard and I were talking.
Leonard on stage. Me in my purloined front row seat.
    Swoon. Baby. Swoon.
And I am moving like a total gent, offering the seat without irritation to its rightful owner who had finally deigned to turn up 30 mins into the show.
    I'm a gent.
    The bouncer not so much.
    No. Not at all,
    And now his psychotic voice.
    His forehead 'kissing' my nose.
"What the fuck do you think this is?" a very distinct tone of aggression.
Leonard was just talking to me.
    "Musical chairs?"
    Kevin/Leonard talking.
    Up.
    Then.
    Down.
    On the roller coaster.
    Yeah
    Sometimes.
Sometimes you just gotta embrace the concept of 'tactical retreat.'
But Oisin and I, we are advancing.
We are going to see Bob Dylan.
    Real soon too.

I am sitting on my terrace, lost in the stars
Listening to the sounds of the sad guitars
Been thinking it all over and I've thought it all through
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
I saw the first fall of snow
I saw the flowers come and go
I don't think that anyone ever has ever knew
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
I'm giving myself to you, I am
From Salt Lake City to Birmingham
From East L.A. to San Antone
I don't think I can bear to live my life alone
My eyes like a shooting star
It looks at nothing here or there, looks at nothing near of far
No one ever told me, it's just something I knew
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
If I had the wings of a snow-white dove
I'd preach the gospel, the gospel of love
A love so real, a love so true
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
Take me out traveling, you're a traveling man
Show me something I don't understand
I'm not what I was, things aren't what they were
I'll go far away from home with her
I've traveled a long road of despair
I've met no other traveler there
Lot of people gone, lot of people I knew
I've made up my mind to give myself to you
Well, my heart's like a river, a river that sings
Just takes me a while to realize things
I've seen the sunrise, I've seen the dawn
I'll lay down beside you when everyone's gone
I've traveled from the mountains to the sea
I hope that the gods go easy with me
I knew you'd say yes, I'm saying it too
I've made up my mind to give myself to you

I once was in a Pantomime Ensemble in Stuttgart, Germany. We played some Mimodramas.(Musical-like Pantomime-Theatre). Tales of Hoffman (Offenbach) was my favourite one. Every time when a piece is played in radio I get a flash back to this beautiful time I had (during this melody I was one of a group of 10 men crawling like mermaids on the stage...almost naked, only covered with a very, very tiny piece..... an with thousands of blue/silver sequins and silver powder everywhere. In the centre of the stage was beautiful Giulietta and we behaved like crazy lovers on the ground showing our bare bottoms to the audience...oh my god. This scene was full of erotic electricity...I never forget). Bob's love song brings back this good old golden memory. Gob bless y'all!

He was in a place by himself with no one being able to even come close to what he as doing. And now 55 years later I find myself mesmerized by Rough and Rowdy Ways because, again, I can say I never heard anything like this before! God bless you Bob. Though I love Bob Dylan and his music, that’s not what brought me here today, because admittedly I don’t listen to him too often. I might be one of only a few, but I’m actually here because I also love opera music, and I recently discovered Offenbach’s “Belle nuit, ô belle nuit d’amour” (aka “Barcarolle”), and I read that this song uses “Barcarolle” as a riff, which you can definitely hear.
