      Listen, IMHO if you have narcolepsy it's much more symptomatic than sleeping at inconvenient times. It can start that way but usually progress. Absolutely, one should get a sleep study. Statistically, it's more likely that one has apnea in the absence of cataplexy. Feeling tired all the time is serious regardless of the cause.

    I struggle trying to convince my wife of 16 years to understand that Narcolepsy is a real disorder. I am 49 now, I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy at the age of 20 and have lived with this disorder for more than 30 years. I first started having symptoms around my senior year in high school. My wife, as well with others blames my eating habits, my weight, and pretty much everything else for my sleepiness. Most of our disagreements in our marriage have come from her not understanding that when I get in a "fog" as she says, and am not there for her have been around symptoms of my narcolepsy. I have ministers that don't think this is a real disorder as well, so the added stress of trying not to fall asleep during meetings is very stressful.

    My neurologist did an all day on and off again sleep study because of my epilepsy but I was then diagnosed with narcolepsy as well. He said I went into rem & started dreaming faster than anyone he ever seen. I’ve been accused of being on drugs because of narcolepsy. People think I sleep a lot during the day because I enjoy it or I’m lazy. I tell them I’d give anything not to be tired all the time. Then you can’t sleep at night. Then here comes the other people saying “well maybe you shouldn’t sleep during the day then you can sleep at night”
    I have epilepsy,narcolepsy, and lupus…..awesome huh

      If you've got comorbidities, how do they tell?
      I've got cptsd with heavy ptsd symptoms. I've had sleep paralysis since I was 4. I started getting it after witnessing a very traumatic event involving my mother. I was abused from 2 weeks old, neglected, neglected not fed ect
      I read that people with any kind of ptsd can get narcolepsy as a result of all the feelings they feel.
      I've got ibs already from the cptsd, possible pots and possible narcolepsy. It doesn't stop.

      Fyi, autoimmune, epilepsy, narcolepsy, chronic pain (often back pain) are all often associated with each other and can be due to childhood trauma or other major stressor.
      There is a form of epilepsy that is mentally triggered rather than physiologically. Its usually due to trauma.
      I cured my narcolepsy of 3 decades within minutes via Accelerated Resolution Therapy ($120). I also cured my debilitating back pain of 15 years by simply reading a paperback book (healing back pain by Dr John Sarnos). Good luck!

    No wonder I struggled so hard in high school and onto college. I can't even hold down a desk job. I literally dozed off during the calm parts of whitewater rafting. I remember going to church service and laying down on the bench for a nap at the age of 10. I've gone up to 18 hours in bed and waking up exhausted ready for another night of sleep again. Can't believe it took it 25 years and multiple doctors to finally diagnose me with narcolepsy, I'm starting to see some results with ritalin.

    Ive noticed a lot of these symptoms in the past 6 months. I can get 10 hours of sleep (waking up every hour or so throughout), get up in the morning, have a cup of coffee, and within a couple hours of waking up feel so sleepy its like i havent slept in days, and be forced to take a nap. Also, once i start to fall asleep, whether at night or during one of my uncalled for daytime naps, i start dreaming right away. Sometimes, ill even start to phase into a dream before im full asleep! And these dreams are super vivid, and i have almost perfect memory of the details of them. You know how you usually start to forget your dream after waking up, and will completely forget it by days end? Well, i can tell you the exact details of dreams i had a week ago or more. My usual night time sleep usually consists of 5 to 10 dreams, each followed by waking up. I have not experienced any muscle weakness though, and i really hope i dont develop that later, given how recent my symptoms are.

      This is pretty much my experience. I always thought it was normal. But the fact that I know for a fact I have adhd and I'm one of the weird ones that actually gets energy from stimulants. Taking vyvanse has been the only reason I don't have mininaps while driving, don't fall asleep while reading to my students, and am just generally able to not suffer being tired all day. When I was a kid I never had good sleep, I've cycled through various forms of insomnia my whole life. I've never been able to sleep a full 8 hours even when I try. Half the time I'm dreaming and hearing things before eyes are closed.y husband says I will go from having a normal conversation before bed to slurring and not making sense at all but still trying to talk. I will already be dreaming at this point and he will just be like go to bed you aren't making sense. It's like the permission I need to let my consciousness fully switch to dream state instead of being in both places at one. I thought this was normal! Maybe I should take a sleep study....idk.

I could barely keep my eyes open while talking to her. I have to plan around being tired. If i fall asleep I'll think I've been asleep for hours and have full, vivid dreams but will only be asleep for a couple of minutes. Getting a new sleep test so we'll see. If you had childhood trauma then that would explain the narcolepsy and many health issues that you had. These are usually rooted from a nervous system that has trouble relaxing. ACE is the acronym for the childhood accumulated stressors.
      Once I learned this I was able to heal most of my health issues. I’m 38 and had these issues since about 7yrs old. I made a separate comment about how I cured my narcolepsy, etc

    I’ve been like this all my life and thought everyone else was like this too. I fall asleep while driving, while in class, while standing up, while working, and during conversations. But I “fight” it off using different methods like moving around or just letting myself nod off for a few minutes. I’m fine if I sleep for a few minutes. When I sleep, I hallucinate a version of reality..just now I came home from work, sat down, and hallucinated that my family members already ate dinner when in reality I just sat for a few minutes and slept while waiting for dinner. I fell asleep while working today but I continued working through it, just automatic movements. If I fall asleep while standing up, my knees buckle so I wake up from almost collapsing.

    Hi, I was diagnosed with narcolepsy & cataplexy in 1999 at 25, although I had the symptoms for many years. Mine is so bad that I cannot drive ever. I fall asleep in any position including standing which results in either falling over like being shot, or instantly entering sleepwalk stage. When I wake up I can be doing things I didnt consciously start. Having it to this degree is very chall;enging & dangerous & I cant handle the side effects of stimulants.

      Scary. Most of us are only this bad if we have to chronically delay sleep attacks. Eventually, we lose, and most of my extreme symptoms happen then. I only drive with my wife as with any hint of fatigue she takes over. Nevertheless, I have nothing to complain about. Typically, my cataplexy isn't too bad. Have you tried Modafinil ? Sodium oxipat ? Is narcolepsy a dynamic disorder that worsens over time ? BTW, the dry humor of Monty Python places me in absolute cataplexy... thanks, Brits !

    Do people with narcolepsy have frequent uncontrollable yawning fits? Those ones that cause full body tremors and your eyes to water like you’re crying. And teeth chatter. ?? You can’t stop yawning and it lasts for up to a whole hour, every couple seconds! It’s not always the same time of day either. It can happen multiple times a day. Is that a narcolepsy thing??
    It’s a normal thing for me forever, but I’ve never met anyone else who it’s ever happened to, and it’s obviously not normal.

    • @DevRonBey
      @DevRonBey Рік тому +1

      Any response should start with, See a sleep doctor... Aside from that, I do have narcolepsy with cataplexy, and I didn't think, nor have fielded any complaints, that I was excessively yawning. Of course, we are all unique. Narcolepsy is rare, and it is more likely you have sleep apnea... or something completely different.
      A one night sleep study will identify any apnea. It is mandatory to fix that before ANY narcolepsy sleep study is performed. If you think you may have narcolepsy its a LONG journey for a medical diagnosis. Consider a sleep study. In closing... these observations may not apply outside of the state I live in, inside of the USA.

      I'm not sure where your from, but in my case, my insurance turned me down but approved it on appeal. The initial denial shook me up so much that I got a lawyer. My lawyer became my dedicated advocate as he saw me melt down with cataplexy as I desperately told him how i felt. He told me that most initial denials occur because they wait till Socal Security Benefits take place. If the federal government recognizes disability, it's very difficult for private insurance to weasel out. Furthermore, in my situation the SSDI ruling ( first filing) reduced my private insurances liability. For those that suspect they may have narcolepsy, get on with testing. It's a long road between clinical diagnosis, medical diagnosis, start of treatment, and legal disability. Narcolepsy can progress to complete disability. if you start the journey late ( as I did ) you will find yourself without income, liquidating assets, and going crazy because of ridiculous delays while the bills are collecting. You may loose self worth and become depressed, thereby increasing the depth of and frequently of cataplexy. Be smart ! Quantify how dangerous your condition is to others and install a dash cam in your car. If it appears you're not going to kill someone driving. Hire a lawyer before you tell your employer of your issue. Since some employers are good and others are bad.... One needs to be smart and lay out a logical plan with full knowledge of legal protections and responsibilities. If things go great a treatment program will do wonders for you. In some states, the DMV doesn't require notification of narcolepsy. Indeed, I have my license, but I only drive on short trips with an aware passenger. I hope you get help and find a lawyer ! Some will take your case and accept a percentage of your initial settlement. Getting a lawyer will mentally help offset the feeling of hopelessness on can feel. One can't bear the weight of untreated narcolepsy and a disability system that must look at every claim with suspicion. It took 2 years for me...

    how can you tell the difference between narcolepsy and sleep apnea related symptoms?

    • @DevRonBey
      @DevRonBey Рік тому +5

      Default notice.. I have narcolepsy but am no doctor... Narcolepsy is due to an autoimmune disease that damages cells in the brain that regulate sleep cycles. Other forms of Narcolepsy can occur with mental illnesses. In either form the best way to highlight narcoleptic symptoms is to look at a sleep study. During the night phase sleep is monitored to ensure proper breathing and a minimum of 6 hours sleep. If a patient presents normal breathing they progress to the daytime test. Anyone in the daytime test has been "cleared " from apnea and remains for narcolepsy testing. During the day a patient will be asked on 5 occasions, to lay down and stay awake. It's considered a marker for narcolepsy if one falls asleep fast and immediately enters REM sleep. I can't remember any specific qualifications but I fell asleep 5 of 5 times within 30 seconds and immediately fell into REM. REM sleep is tracked by electrodes fixed to head, if It occurs near sleep it is NOT in proper sequence and by exclusion of apnea has narcolepsy.
      Frequently narcolepsy will cause cataplexy where its belived the paralysis state in dreams is active and triggering by emotion, although the patient is fully awake, a muscle paralysisis observed.
      Unfortunately chronic sleep apnea can mimic narcolepsy so just discussing symptoms without excluding one from the other is not possible and in either case only a clinical diagnosis can be made without testing. An insurance company considers non medical diagnosis week a water. Not all Narcolepsy patients experience cataplexy... No sleep apnea patients experience cataplexy.
      Sleep apnea will certainly affect a proper sleep patterns and a good doctor will insist that its checked for and treated first. I had to wear my mask for 6 months, without fail during sleep or be disqualified for my daytime narcolepsy test. Today's sleep machine uploads patient use to doctors office ! Expect a drug test before all testing. I probably weaved in info you didnt want to know.....

    I am seeing a sleep specialist this month because my neurologist is very sure I have it. I match every single symptom in this video. I am so sleepy every hour of the day it's not even funny...almost feels like my brain is fluttering or wrapped in cotton. At night I have insomnia and only sleep in an intense dream state, 99% of the time it's vivid nightmares and I've endured countless episodes of sleep paralysis. I feel best when I sleep a short amount...but last night went up to 13 hours and feel exhausted. Lately I think I've experienced some cataplexy...I will feel a weird tickle in my brain like it's shutting off and feel like I can't move my limbs as easily for a second. Very scary. Crazy to know this is what it's been all this time. Really makes life difficult.

    • @johnnypolex
      @johnnypolex 6 місяців тому

      Fyi, insomnia can be associated with narcolepsy along with other health issues. if your nervous system is stuck in fight or flight mode then your circadian rhythm can flip. Also, if you have vivid intense dreams then it could be due to serious sleep apnea during your sleep also.
      My sleep performance was better than 99% of the population. But I had pretty bad narcolepsy also. So like you, i had great naps but poor sleep in the evenings + insomnia.
      I found out that these issues and more were rooted from my childhood trauma. So i was able to cure the narcolepsy using a type of therapy called Accelerated Resolution Therapy

    I fall asleep standing up a lot during the day - sometimes I fall down - I’ve hurt myself pretty badly several times already- but I don’t know what is causing this. I’m 43, and it started about 5 years ago when I was doing a lot of hours at a nursing home - I would do double shifts overnight and I think I messed something up. However, it’s worse with electronics - I sort of just daze out and people make fun of me, they call me a junkie, and it hurts bc I am in recovery (8 years). I don’t go anywhere, esp when I have to sit and watch something bc I am afraid I will fall asleep. I wish I knew what was wrong with me. I don’t think I’m narcoleptic bc I’m so old. @gaylelauren5691 Sorry for injecting myself here.. In my situation the overnight sleep ( minimum +6 hours ) qualified me for the daytime test. I only qualified on the 3rd attempt. During day testing I fell asleep with seconds of laying down. Furthermore I immediately entered REM sleep. I'm going to give you some advice. Be prepared for no answers, because with narcolepsy it can be difficult just getting 2 hours a night without waking up for20 then going back asleep... disqualified, try again. You could just have a good day... disqualified. Don't mean you don't have it just you didn't present. Lastly, don't be surprised if the ask for a sample for a drug test before you get in bed. Relax, don't take things personally. Remember it takes 6 hours of sleep to qualify for the real test.
