Marble subway tile being installed The main part of the backsplash was installed on a running bond pattern and a small separate area was installed on a herringbone pattern. Th tile was installed with a polymer modified thinset and a 1/4" square notched trowel. When marble tile is installed, it is important to seal the tile before grouting, although it is not seen in this video, the tile was sealed. . Herringbone tile pattern can be very difficult to get right if you don't plan ahead and do a good layout so you don't end up with tiny little pieces. In this video i go through the steps I took to install a natural stone marble subway tile on a small section of a large kitchen backsplash. The area in the video was an accent piece of a larger backsplash which had the same marble subway tile installed on a running bond pattern with the same 3x6 inch marble tile. I demonstrate how to find the center of the tile pattern and how I figured out what all the cuts would be to get a clean balanced layout of the tile. For small sections like this space in the kitchen backsplash it is easy enough to just dry lay the entire area of tile and take some measurements. If the backsplash was a larger , then you would layout a section and then use it as a reference to figure what the cuts will be.

ive noticed that you leave in the spacers on natural stone and Ive seen it in jobs that ive demo'd. Is there a reason for it? preferance? or just a boston thing? thanks. love the work and content.

I hope sealers are better nowadays than they were 20 years ago. White grout on a backsplash is great until you're cooking tomato sauce and you splash on it. Ask me how I know. :(

may i ask how much you charged just in labor for this backsplash?

In Denver, Im “considered”expensive. We would’ve charged $1800-$2000. Looks like 50-60 sqft. Price covers Denshield, mesh tape, hardware, thinset, sealer, grout, and silicone. Customer would’ve been responsible for marble and edging (pencils or bullnose) (if any). 2-3 days. Demo would be an additional $400 if needed. Hope this helps.

I asked you a question about ardex grout and you said that your area doesn't have an ardex distributor where your located however here your using ardex x77 thinset, Am I missing something or did I miss interpret you Sal?

Tell the truth, you said Ardex, my mind was hearing Bostik, guess I am more senile than I want to believe. However I don't use a lot of Ardex products, my main suppliers carries Laticrete, Tec and Mapei. Don't use much Custom either. The Ardex, Custom I usually get when I have NTCA vouchers for them. Not saying they don't have great products, just a matter of convenience.
