That way if you're new to EV ownership or are planning to purchase an EV you know what to expect beforehand without having to deal with some of the stresses and worries I had. Just at the year mark with my Model Y (even white like yours). Everything you said was spot on with my experience. The one thing that you didn't emphasize enough was that we constantly receive software updates, pretty much like Microsoft used to do for the operating systems (remember Windows 95? ). After the update, your computer was "hopefully" improved, it ran with less bugs, maybe faster, and could run more apps. For example, just yesterday, Tesla updated my car's version of the operating system. As part of the update, the Full Self driving app was updated to the new AI NeuroNet approach. Basically really powerful computers digested millions of hours of "good driver" behavior, distilled it down to an AI brain ("photons to actions"), and downloaded the brain new brain into their entire fleet. And now with my freaking car, I point at a place on a map, and it just drives there! It isn't perfect yet but it is clear that it will get better and better. Each iteration gets better (every 2 weeks recently). And this works on a ten year old car.
On charging, you were right on, charging in your garage "literally" (I timed it) takes 5 seconds. The experience is SO much better than gas stations.
I had the same experience about "range anxiety", we have to plan better which turned out to be not a big deal. It is fading now but I am really expecting charging to get faster and faster until it is faster than pumping gas, and we will see a car that drives across the US in a few years.
Just got my model y for 42k inventory demo vehicle with 31miles. It has everything I want . Black paint , white seats, 7 seats . And tow hitch. I spec one out a couple years ago and it was over 70k lol
Oh what joy, when a ford pulls up to the Tesla SC they use up TWO spaces because of the placement of the port and the sort length of the SC cord.
This channel is incredible, production quality of channels with +2mil subs but surprised to see it is barely 200k, so I subscribed!
Level 1 charging will provide 3 to 5 miles of range per hour of charge and overnight this will meet most people's daily driving needs. If you have 12-2 wire to the outlet and a 20amp 120v breaker, you can change the outlet to a NEMA 5-20 and get up to 7 miles of range per (120V/16amps) hour of charge, which is plenty for most every daily commute.
Can agree with this sentiment. My daily commute totals to 34 miles. 3 times a week, plus maybe 20 miles total for other days, I'm sitting at ~122 miles a week. I'm planning on getting a Bolt EV, which even after years of battery degradation and being in the cold should get me at minimum 100 miles on a full battery. It'd take me 40 hours on level 1 charger at worst case to make up my weekly miles, but that's completely fine for me.
That’s nice but not everyone has that option. I live in apartments that have no garages or even outdoor sockets. So for someone like me, I would have to depend on chargers provided by businesses or superchargers. In my area, the nearest publicly accessible charger is over 60 miles away and is a level 1 charger, so it is not practical for me. 🤷♂️
Just got my first electric bill with my new Tesla. I’m charging it in my personal detached garage in my complex & thankfully I don’t have to pay for it ☺️
It’s slow but I have a short work commute and my battery hasn’t fallen below 60% (even with running errands.)
It’s plugged in at night and usually 5-8 hours gets me back to 100% (80%).

I live outside of Sydney Australia, similar climate to Houston, maybe a few degrees colder in winter... 23F to 32F (-5C to 0C) winter mornings - similar summers - average low 90's (34C) summer days but a dozen or so extreme 110-115F (43-46C) days a year.
I have had my 2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD for just on 12months and 24,000km / 15,000 miles.
Unlike your experience with the model Y I almost always exceed the advertised range and economy. I have a lifetime consumption of 175Wh/mi (109Wh/km), and sit around 161Wh/mi (100Wh/km) in summer and 188Wh/mi (116Wh/km) in winter. I average 320mi between charges (EPA is 272) and have physically driven over 350miles between charges.
My regular commute is a 100mile round trip to work, I have been as low as 146Wh/mi (91Wh/km) on this drive.
I drive semi-regularly to Melbourne (600 miles), I can sit on a flat freeway all day long at 70mph in good weather and still be under 200Wh/mi (125Wh/mi). It's faster and cheaper to do this trip in my EV than previous ICE car.
I can charge my car overnight for $0.08 AUD ($0.052 USD) per kwh. I have less than 1/3rd wear on my tyres and my insurance is 20% cheaper than the Audi A4 it replaced at $675 USD a year (Australia has universal personal injury that is the same for everyone except inexperienced drivers and paid as part of annual registration so the insurance is for vehicle damage only).
I have paid less than $150 USD in fuel, $0 services, $0 tyres and brakes and my insurance is cheaper (and the car cost me $20k less) - My Audi cost me $17k over 4years / 50,000 miles in fuel, services, tyres and brakes.
EV ownership in Australia is a no-brainer.
What energy plan do u use? 0.08 kWh is so cheap.

In Portland, OR there's a company called EV Rides and they are dedicated to keeping older EV's on the road by testing and replacing batteries cells for different range packages. In my city they only focus on Teslas and Nissans but this is a great step forward. From 2011 to now there have been electric cars on the road and are about to reach the end of their battery cycles. Anyone who owns a Leaf or Tesla can have a third party option for replacement and I'm looking forward to other companies offering certified service to keep these cars going.
Jimmy, I want to address two things that you said 1. Longevity @13:28-On UA-cam, there’s a video where a British Gentleman has a Model 3, with 420,000 miles on it, and no issues. Secondly, you CAN differentiate between each model year of the Model Y. There are a plethora of videos comparing each year of the Model Y ( on UA-cam). Great video! Informative, concise, wee put together, and enjoyable.
Unfortunately the primary reason a lot of folk don't want to switch yet, is misinformation.
They hear stories how EVs were in the 2009-2014 era, before supercharging became en-mass and before the cars were refined with longer ranges.
I've genuinely, not in jest, had someone ask if using the sound system cuts miles off the car. Or if I floor the accelerator for fun sometimes, will the tires be used up in just a few hundred miles.
Just stuff that really became redundant pretty quickly after the early EV adoption phase, which unless you go for a cheaper EV car made before 2018 now, is unlikely to be an issue.
The fuel cost differences vary significantly. For example, I live in Mexico in the winter. Gasoline is 24.89 Pesos per liter - or about $US5.60 per gallon. Residential electricity is priced low. There are 3 tiers based on home much electricity you use in a month. Tier 1 is about $US0.05 per KwH. Tier 2 is about $US0.065 per KwH. Tier 3, which I have never been in, is about $US0.115 per KwH. Commercial electricity rates are expensive in Mexico.
My Subaru Forester will get 30 miles one one gallon of gasoline. On the same amount of money, my Nissan Leaf will get 225 miles on the middle tier electricity rate.
Switch to Seattle, where I live in the summer, and the gas price is a lot lower at about $3.76 per gallon and residential electricity is $0.115 per KwH. Again the Forester will get 30 miles. On the same money, $3.76, the Leaf gets 94 miles with Seattle electricity rates.

I am also in Texas (Austin), we drive an EV not a tesla though and we have so much ranger anxiety when we make a trip to houston because there isnt a level three charger anywhere between the cities. But so many tesla stops, definitely considering one for the next car.
I have driven my Tesla Model 3 rwd from Houston to Orlando and back without issue.
I have a Toyota Bz4x and I love it compared to my Camry. I love that EVs are so much better when they sit at idle (I'm a parent of young kids and I'm always waiting for something) and the charging experience at home/across the street at my supermarket is so much better than going to a smelly gas station.
Mine works well for me. I live in southern Illinois so we do experience cold winters but not a ton of snow and for the majority of the year it’s fairly temperate. I’m about 80/20 charging primarily at home, and my commute to work is less than 100 miles round trip. The insurance cost on these cars is high, but between the cost of energy and the lack of maintenance, I’ve more than made up the difference in cost versus driving a fairly modest small car over the past year, not even factoring in the comfort and convenience benefits.

Your emphasis on the Form Follows Function mantra is right on. In retirement I am driving a BEV with 100 mile range on a good day. But I have only driven beyond that a few times and used my 2004 F150 60K miles pickup. My 2015 Mercedes compliance BEV with a Tesla model S driveline but not the large battery, has been great and only degraded about 10 % in nine years of use and has a Total Cost of Ownership (not Operation) of about 45¢/mi being used as my daily driver or for someone with a daily commute of 75 miles or less.
Probably going for a Plug-in Hybrid next as I don't have a PV system yet.
I'm in Houston too and have a Model 3 rwd and my wife has a Model Y LR. Best cars we have ever owned. I would recommend getting Tesla solar panels and powerwalls as well. I have not paid for electricity in 4 years and charge both cars for free at home with the free nights electricity plan. I have an 11.34kw solar system with 2 powerwalls.

Yes and no. I got the solar system installed first and am making payments that are less than my summer power bills were and it has power backup included. It got us through the Texas winter blackout as well. A few years later and my gas car was getting on its last leg. Because I had it paid off long ago and I was saving for a new car already I had $30k to put down on my Model 3 making the payments the same as I was spending on fuel and maintenance for my gas car. The next year the Model Y prices dropped enough to where we could trade in my wife's car for only $50 more per month but save $150/mo on gas. Overall our yearly costs are less than before.

I’ve become more and more interested in electric bikes and swapping my car out for that. Public transit is decent where I live and getting better, and a solid electric bike would really be all that I need 95% of the time coupled with it, plus way cheaper than an ICE or EV. The only reason I haven’t yet is mainly due to my older apartment not having bike storage and living up two floors severely limits what I want to haul up daily.

my insurance doubled - 27 year old male, no accidents, nashville TN, car is clean title 2021 longrange, great coverage (im sure you could go cheaper with less coverage, mine is $825 every 6 months)
i bought mine used from tesla for 35k.. originally it cost the last owner close to 60k since they bought the upgraded white interior 1k, gray exterior 1k, acceleration boost 2k, enchanced auto pilot 6k..
buying ev or not, buying used is always always the best financial decision. My father who has been in car sales for 30 years always told us kids to buy a few years older, the last owner takes the hit of depreciation.
all in all: i’ve owned 10 cars since highschool, and this tesla was the first time i ever felt like i didnt just upgrade to a nicer car, or faster one - its like i got all of the perks in one and bought a computer with wheels. I could never go back to ICE - its like when you got your first smart phone after a flip
level 1 12 amp charger works perfectly for me but I only drive about 50 miles per day.
Level 1 (120v) works for a lot of people. If you live in a cold climate you're probably going to want level 2 (240v) in the winter.

11 years and 5 ev cars I have owned (currently own 2), I have the same exact experience. One thing to point out, the recent electricity rates in Bay Area went so much up (34c nightly rate), that you do not get much saving on gas anymore.
One more thing, I do own gas cars as well - and since they aged, I started to have “something will brake” anxiety. Whether it will be not passing the smoke or transmission on my leisure car …
"Really Cold Climate" Tesla Model Y is the #1 registered vehicle in NORWAY which BTW extends up into the Arctic Circle. Is that not cold enough?
Norway is now at 92% EV sales per quarter. Fossil cars get virtually no sales. Bjorn Nyland has some very good EV videos from Norway. EVs are "the Boss" in cold weather!

Good video except the cold weather comments. I live in rural mid Minnesota. The Model Y is the best winter car I've ever had and I've had many. Better even than my Subaru Forester (which has now spent the last 2 winters in the garage with a canoe on top).

@@NoNameFish247 The instantaneous traction control of the electric motors control the car much faster than the AWD on a gas vehicle. In addition it takes only a few minutes (via the phone app) to warm the interior and de-ice the exterior in snow and cold. Another thing that surprised me is that the Model Y has a lot more carrying capacity compared to the Forester. Don't get me wrong, the Forester is great for a gas car but on the whole there's no comparison to the Model Y. The over the air updates that keep adding new features are monumental. Recently the new AI based FSD v12.3.4 was loaded over the air and now the car drives itself better than most human drivers. You still are required to supervise it but if you let the Tesla drive as the pilot and you as the observant co-pilot it adds an unprecedented layer of safety. I'm never going back to gas.

Price is the issue. That’s why I didn’t get one yet.
Among the many many problems with EVs is the one pervasive in all of modern tech: in-built obsolescence. As you stated, these vehicles rely on apps and software updates to keep them running. What happens when they decide to stop supporting your vehicle with software updates and security patches? What if they decide all of a sudden a feature you had since you bought it, they now want to charge you a subscription for *cough* BMW. They do that with phones in order to force you to go buy another. All the arguments people make about inbuilt obsolescence be it phones or laptops or whatever can apply here: user replaceable batteries, losing customer support if you "jailbreak" it, just out of nowhere no longer supporting the device. All of those arguments can apply to EVs. Theres a funny picture going around of someone who owns a Mustang EV not having a software update installing correctly and getting bricked. But instead of a phone, its a vehicle. I know folks who still daily a 20 year old vehicle and theyre running fine. That wont be the case with these. Good on you, like what you like but I wont be buying one.
Everything you stated is 100% correct. It'll be interesting to see if these "connected" vehicles will stay online as long as traditional cars. Truthfully, I doubt this generation of EVs will. The hardware landscape will look so different in even 10 years, unless they provide hardware upgrades and much cheaper battery replacements at the ~10year mark. At that point those are potentially costly "maintenance" item everyone would have to worry about. That being said, hoping the future includes some level of user-friendly modifiable EV or at least a manufacturer that's open to it!
Ice vehicles are becoming the same.
A valid point that makes a case for buying a Tesla over other EVs. To be fair, even if new software is stopped on a software defined EV you will just be in the same situation as every fossil fuel vehicle owner: stuck with whatever features you had when you bought it (or the last update).
My wife and I have looked at EVs and have decided against getting one because the infrastructure and battery technology isn't there yet, and because of the total cost of ownership. Both are developing rapidly but at 74 years of age I seriously doubt I'm going to live long enough to see them mature adequately, let alone see the savings in fuel offset the premium price of the vehicle.
Hope you and your wife are doing well! And agreed! EVs should not be purchased for the fuel savings alone, that factor is not significant for the vast majority of people. Hope we both get to see the day this matures enough to be much more enticing for more folks!

Sound logic there. However you should definitely rent one (ahem, a Tesla), just for the fun of it. I haven't had real fun driving a car since my thirties. Every time I am in a Tesla, it feels like a treat. Since we are talking renting now ;), I would suggest a Model S plaid! I bet you never thought you would drive 150 MPH in your life. I recently broke my top speed record from my teen years of 115 MPH effortlessly while passing a Semi yesterday.
So $36K for a car is too much for you. What price would be nice for you?

for me tesla is logical choice for an ev, all others are out of the question unless they have nacs built in which is not for a while.
I think that I'll stick to my 21-year old Toyota, with dead simple electronics that can't be shut off externally, I don't have to build an entire garage to set up a home charging station since my area lacks ANY infrastructure, I don't have to worry about software trying to steal my control on the road and causing me to overcorrect (My grandmother's 2020 Hyundai has done this to me with its LKA), gas station trips are few and far between enough that I'm running a $45ish tank that took less than five minutes to fill over about a month and a half, and last of all, despite the high mileage, this vehicle has never left me in a state where it's undriveable over the last seven years of ownership.
In fact, I've finally started looking seriously towards getting a second vehicle. I'm not looking for something newer, with more tech, etc., I'm looking at *older* vehicles with *less, simpler* tech. Most likely, I'm going to get myself a JDM import, because as far as I can see, those little 90's Kei vans seem to be in really good shape, with really low mileage for their age and prices, while being excellent on fuel economy and seemingly simple to care for.
The only thing I own as an EV, is an eBike I built myself, with an electronics system not even as complicated as my car. The only other EV thing I'd consider adding to the fleet, would be one of the cheaper, simpler, street legal eMCs, of which there are a decent selection. The batteries are smaller, the electronics are simpler, they are significantly more efficient with their batteries due to the lower weight and fewer things to power, and they can charge off a 120V outlet in fewer than 12h. My eBike, which has less power and an even smaller battery than a proper eMC, can charge off a wall outlet in barely more than an hour, off of a low output charging brick even, and it gets me about eighty miles easily holding 25mph unanssisted with only a little over 750 Watts, or just above 1HP if converted back over to a regular automotive power estimate, I would love to see what 10kW of power would push me to.

@@trex2092 I would, but they're about as expensive to care for as an EV, they have to be cared for *constantly* unlike either EVs or ICE vehicles, and sometimes take their own initiative not unlike LKA/self driving.

No talks about the repair after warranty expires. With any gas car you can go to any Indy garage but with Tesla you are stuck going to them and their over price repair cost. 😂😂
Why are you keep the car past the warranty? The battery has an 8 year/120K mile warranty - your loan should be 60-72 months which is what? 5 to 6 years? Car should be paid off, list it on a marketplace and buy a new one 😂😂😂 it’s quite simple and easy
From what I have seen Tesla has reasonable repair prices. It was also just reported that over the 1st 10yrs of ownership Teslas are the cheapest to own.
2 years isn’t long term. Thats not even the life of a car loan. Even leases are called short term. Thats just 3 years.

I picked that specific vehicle because these were other cars I was considering for myself when purchasing the Y and in the same rough size class. Also made it easy that they offered a hybrid and non hybrid versions to compare across. No malicious intent but I definitely could have included more options that others might be considering.
@@JimmyTriesWorld I understand. At the very least you could have also included that fact that you were considering the Lexus. Reason to my reaction is I recently saw a range test (YT channel from UK) which included several cars (Tesla included) in different price ranges and the Lexus was laughably inefficient, it was by far the worst of the bunch but also very pricey.
