  • Back in 2005, I came up with the idea to feed my timid mandarin fish with a tall slender (olive) jar. I called it the Mandarin Diner. Here's my article with more pictures: melevsreef.com...
    I needed this video for the newer version of my site, so you get a new upload. :)

    I've been told by Big Al's I can't have a Mandarin since i only have a 40 gallon tank, and that they need at least a 100 gallon since they eat live food. I would love to have a pair. Nice to see this where they are in a 30 gallon.

      I used to use live baby brine shrimp in jar as well. I used to hatch them out, they'd be 24 hours old. It looked pretty neat seeing them in a pile at one end, many buzzing around in that area for the mandarin to consume.

    I think it is a fantastic video. I tried this but my Mandarin cannot figure out (so far) howo to get in there. It is just trying to nip at the close end of the bottle where all the pellets are. Waiting game!

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  5 років тому

      Line up the bottle with the spot where the mandarin tends to glide across regularly, keeping the lip of the jar opening even with the sandbed. Your fish should figure out how to get in there, you just have to be patient. It could take a few attempts for it to learn this is a regular spot to eat.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  5 років тому

      @@kamranasif2004 I'd leave in in the tank 10 minutes at the most, then pull it. You don't want rotting food adding to algae issues.
