I am so proud of myself bringing the 4/5 Thunderbolt head all the way from West Shore Services to SC and it gets to go off for its first tornado warning!!
I can remember being a kid in rural Indiana (pre smartphone era) and sirens like this were the fastest way to communicate a Tornado was in the area. I can then remember moving to SC later and being surprised to find out no such system existed here. It’s cool to see the system you have in place, you never know who out there could be saved from something like this!
I only knew because of my weather radio and fire dispatch!. My phone didnt go off until after the sirens were done. My neighborhood loves it! One of our familly friends even baked me a cake and said she sits outside every saturday and listens to my siren tests which was awesome. The county EMA director even knows and is glad i have sirens in this area. The siren at my fire department did not work due to a faulty radio power supply. This siren was heard 6 miles away that night according to people close by.
No. They typically only affect an area within a county within the state. Tornado warnings are only used if a tornado has been either confirmed visually or by radar. Tornado Watches are a bit different.
I have always thought the most likely reason is because the mounts such as a steel or wooden post to hold up the speaker unit are extremely expensive to buy and install. Hobbyists I have seen typically just leave them on the ground. But I could be wrong. I would love to own a small one, these are extremely cool but way out of my price range. It sucks cause where I live the city retired a Whelen WPS-2800 or -2900 series siren and replaced it with a WPS-4000 series rotating siren. It would have been so cool to obtain it, but I have no space. Our city utilizes the Best Possible Protection Tone for all weather warnings, severe thunderstorm, or tornado warnings.
@@EastDetroitMusic-Sirens3000A whelen has been heard 3 or 4 and the thunderbolt has been heard 9 miles away. Confirmed by multiple friends and family and my grandad
Amazing you havent rigged up a way to send a signal remotely to the Thunderbolt system. I mean, yes it is much more hands-on to drive to the shed and activate it....but it would be cool to Mark Rober that thing and remote activate it. :)
I realy hope that this Tornado don`t hit your town. In Germany we need such a Tornadowaringsystem i think, we hat the last few Years 60 Tornados +- a few each Year, that is many times more that wie have in the 90s ord 80s. With increasing intensity due to the hot summers of recent years. I think we should send experts to you in the USA, you have much more experience with these storms. Unfortunately, Germans don't. Get through this tornado session safely, may God grant that you ans your Families and Homes stay safe.
It indeed took me some seconds before I realized you operate your own sirens. :-D Whenever my wife calls me crazy again, I'll show her your video :-D Well-done, really

@@SouthCarolinaSirens that’s awesome!
@@SouthCarolinaSirens crazy how much range those things can get even on the ground!
@@SouthCarolinaSirens I tried to tip it in because I herd it 0:50
You know why that secondary siren is at ground level? It's to warn the people in the shed next to it.
Makes sense but why outside
He out side
That's a pretty impressive personal siren activation settup, as well as the siren collection you got there
Thats sweet! Hope everyone and everything is okay!
Did you keep the 2001 that was for a power plant or did the city take it?
Still have it. Being put back up somewhere probably.
@ what type of 2001 was it
Even if the Thunderbolt overpowers the Whelen, from my experience, the fact its even audible over a mechanical siren is pretty impressive.
Nice video, do you have the thunderbolt radio controlled yet?
That T bolt is so much louder then the R4
Wow! A Vortex and 4/5 'bolt sound good together. I also would've thought your 1003 would be back up by now.
Its down cause i need to get the panels fixed up and redo the paint.
Does the tornado warning affect all of South Carolina?
No. They typically only affect an area within a county within the state. Tornado warnings are only used if a tornado has been either confirmed visually or by radar. Tornado Watches are a bit different.
Wouldn't it be better if this siren was on a 10 meter high pole or hall?
Glad you're safe, we just got heavy rains down here.
6:06 THEN THERE WAS SILENTS
Nice video! Cool to see both the Vortex and the T-Bolt going off.
where your Siren Pole
Just wondering but why are the sirens on the ground aren't they supposed to be spread out and up in the air

Those sirens are privately owned
We’re are the sirens that are going off
I got a tornado warning to
4/5?
Damn you had it up fast.
Before the county did theirs. Plus the siren at the firehouse hasnt been working so this covers the area nicely.
