I trained in a straight blast affiliated gym many years ago it is very different than training in other martial arts gyms. I miss those times with the tribe.

Individual cases associated with the practice of violence are a normal matter that should be addressed and taken seriously, but the real problem is with organized crime that uses violence as a means.

I'll only add that the "If kids stand up to bullies, the threat will go away" advice doesn't always work. It certainly won't work when the bully is a 12 year old sociopath whose ego can't tolerate being bested in any way. I was a public school teacher for 18 years. Most people would be stunned by our schools' absolute refusal to keep pathologically troubled, predatory children out of the classroom. Most superintendents, principals, and teachers embrace this philosophy for one reason- to pat themselves on the back about how "caring" they are towards troubled kids, especially minority kids. It's a national tragedy. Since these kids won't ever be kicked out of our schools, the solution, in schools at least, is to hold school districts criminally responsible for acts of violence committed by children who are known to be antisocial and violent, Look at the recent case in Florida where the female teacher was knocked unconscious and savagely beaten by a 270lb student who had history of violence a mile long.

Did he actually use the idiotic conservative cliché of "it is the bully's victim fault?" And then people get angry when a school shooting happens. (And no, no one takes Cullen seriously anymore.)

Another terrific interview, thank you. I think being streetwise, alert to your surroundings whilst out and about is very important. Most folk are day dreaming or glued to their phones..

10:40 As a born in Jehovah's Witness...I took a whole lot of shit from others constantly. And it made me psychologically unwell throughout my teens/20's. Didn't know how to help myself. I paid for it for years and suffered with depression, suicidal thoughts, having a hero/savior complex but not knowing how to take care of myself...not having any boundaries or able to speak up.
The scripture they use to just explain away any retaliatory behavior is "why not let yourself be wronged than to wrong others?" And "turn the other cheek" etc. This held me back in life SO MUCH. I also didn't know how to stand up to my verbally abusive dad....or to stand up for my own sovereignty since we were to be obedient. And the elders don't do shit if you take a beating from your parents. Still hearing about abusive parents in that organization and it makes me so angry.
This book is SO NEEDED for any children coming out of that religion. Thank you for this discussion.

I hear you. I've been practicing martial arts since I was a kid but was also held back by the religious beliefs I was taught. I never allowed myself to have that dog in me that makes good martial artists, that same dog that with a lot of training evolves into something enlightened, beautiful and vital. It took me until my 30s to realize none of the people preaching to me knew worth a damn how the world works and what passed for the-one-way-to-be-in-the-world religious thought are just control patterns that only serve the people who preach them. It was all bullshit.

@@philosopher2king Religion is for the lazy, cowardly, stupid and/or weak minded. I no longer give them respect and go straight to mocking the absurdity of their religion while mocking their disgusting excuse for a brain. I'd justify violence to end religion, good episode.

So many of these conversations have a tendency to be a polite battle between the author (who wants to talk about the book they've just published) and Michael (who wants to direct the conversation towards the things he's interested in and wants to be the main focus). But the result of such battles is often interesting and worth listening to.

It's too bad that Shermer didn't call this fella out for genuflecting at the temple of BJJ, when it's pretty self-evident that the ground is the last place you want to be is on the ground in combat. He needs to bring Marc MacYoung and Wim Demeere on as a counterpoint to this drivel

Growing up In a harsh environment the reality is there is no preparation or training to deal with violence 🤷🏻‍♂️ you have to roll with the punches when it happens. You either got it or don’t it’s that simple.

I literally just an hour or so ago commented on a Darkhorse podcast about studying with JWs and how they would get you to parrot back an answer (not your own carefully thought through answer but theirs) that had just been read from a passage in their literature! Wasn’t expecting to the hear it here on the same day!

American Wrestling is the best to learn in my opinion as a base art and then boxing/ kick boxing.

    • @sigiligus
      @sigiligus Рік тому +1

Wrestling and boxing give you the most results for the least investment. The comparative simplicity is also a huge advantage; you don’t have to filter out a whole bunch of esoteric moves. Most of the basics are immediately applicable and effective. You fall back on your training under stress, so the less you have to think about the better. And let’s be honest, most guys who start fights are either drunk or bullies who have never actually been in a fair fight and are just hoping you’ll back down. Start throwing serious punches their way and they will panic pretty fast.

All necessary measures must be taken to preserve the accumulated purified scientific knowledge, especially mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, self-concept, and the process of simultaneously generating both personal identity and consciousness type one,….etc.
The possibility of humans returning to the dark ages and losing accumulated scientific knowledge is very likely, what gives value is mind accompanied with filtered accumulated scientific knowledge.

A skeptic is someone who questions orthodoxy. Michael Shermer is someone who is a believer in his own garbled interpretation of orthodox science. Just like clerics who challenged Galileo, he believes he represents self-evident reality and does not need to listen to data that contradicts the current paradigm.
