@@MartialArtsJourney For sure Ramsey is gonna tell you: "Go train". Too much interviews and questions, ideas, without training is nothing. And don't forget that it doesn't matter how much they recommend you BJJ, you also have to see that some of the BJJ guys have got KO by a single punch too, name them, Marcelo Garcia, Roger Gracie, etc. Even they've being training an art that have demonstrated to be effective for many years, they could fail too, for many reasons. You can try to interview those guys who had beaten BJJ high level fighters without using BJJ...Those few guys :) what are they gonna tell you? Just think about it. I hope you're expending the same or more amount of time doing interviews and editing videos as at training yourself, trying to understand the concepts behind the techniques not only by listening to others but to doing and experiencing. Otherwise any martial art you train, it will become like your Aikido. Now, go train. Love and Peace.

Thanks so much Rokas, i'm at the exact same process as you,"young" third degree blackbelt aikido instructor slowly going away from aikido and currently enjoying so much my newly discovered MMA lessons. Your path and research really inspires me a lot and comforts me in the idea that i'm going the right way. There is such a lack of objectivity in the aikido world. Maybe someday we'll be able to extract the few useful tools from aikido to a non hypocrite, enjoyable and usefull skillset and practice.
If you want to talk about that it'll be a pleasure, i've been thinking about this idea about quit a long time ago.
    Anyway, take care !

I don't understand how people could say that Shotokan is ridiculous when its been proven even in MMA?! I would say Shotokan is a lot mores useful than many other MAs. Especially when it is modified for full contact it becomes deadly. One example in MMA, Lyoto Machida. There are others from shotokan backgrounds too. But I totally agree that all MAs should be modified for any kind of free form of fighting like in MMA. Even BJJ is modified when it is in MMA.

uh, mma is NOT free form since there are quite a number of rules to be observed! If contenders are allowed free rein then I believe all mma/bjj fighters would come out with broken limbs and joints by Silat Masters! Even worse, their fanatics will find their idols come out of the ring in casket!

Most of your fundamental or foundation of BJJ is learn in white and blue belt level and will make your superior to the majority of the population on the ground! Most BJJ/ MMA guys know you are always subjected to getting caught with a punch but their chances are less because they practice in these areas or ranges of the fight!!

Seeing as jeet kune do was never supposed to be a martial art, I see his points as valid yet not at the same time, when Bruce made jeet kune do, he made it having trained years in wing chun, and when he found a lot of forms and stances were useless, and in some cases slowed him down(he began this train of thought after losing a fight he thought he could’ve won), he began exploring other forms of fighting and applying them to his own, while also trying to make wing chun forms more effective through common sense. When he made the Tao of jeet kune do and started applying that philosophy to his training, people started asking him to teach them jeet kune do as if it were its own martial art, but in its essence, jeet kune do is simply the idea that taking what you believe to be the effective part of your martial art and others, and utilizing them to your greatest ability. So when he mentions forms of “jeet kune do” that we’re useless, they were simply not yet realized parts of wing chun and other forms of kung fu that remained. Bruce did not create these forms or edit them in any way, they simply remained because he was basically teaching more effective wing chun, and as he was only human, I’m assuming that some of the teachings just stuck from his years of training a certain way, or, as Bruce unfortunately died in his prime, he did not change or discover the issues with these forms during the time that he had alive. So while these forms may be useless, this has nothing to do with a philosophy that preaches against these forms. To anyone that knows more on the topic than me, thinks I said something stupid, or simply wants to clarify some details of what I have just wrote, please calmly and concisely write your reply below. Thanks for reading.

Ok not too familiar with the history of aikido. But didn't aikido derive from bushido? And wasn't bushido developed by samurai's to learn how to disarm someone armed with a samurai sword? An important note is samurai swords are traditionally trained as a 2 handed weapon. If this is the case isn't it no surprise that aikido doesn't work on other martial arts like muay Thai, karate, judo, jujistsu, western wrestling, boxing.
If you take a martial art out of its context of what it was originally created for then it's no frigging surprise it's ineffective!!
If you want learn to kick well learn taekwondo, if you want to learn how to kick punch and use elbows, learn muay Thai or karate, if you want to learn how to ground fight learn Bjj or wrestling, takedowns and throws learn judo or Japanese jujistsu. Taking any art outside of the context of what is what developed for will make it ineffective , and over the years this is forgotten. In many martial arts so called teachers say that their martial art is effective in a general sense when the reality is the art was probably developed for a specific form of conflict.

Honestly, the formula that traditional martial arts push as a life journey through self-defense to become a better human being, I believe is not appealing to the younger generation. They want to learn to defend themselves. They have no interest in Katas or Japanese haikus. They have seen the UFC, and they want to understand it. However, the absolute and only thing that traditional marts should generally focus on outside of self-defense is humility. There is just something very humbling when someone takes your back and completely submits you into a tap. If the dojo is not enacting this kind randori, then the student grows up with a false sense of humility. A humility that transcends a disposition of arrogance, "I am humble because I was taught to be, but In my heart of heart I believe I can take you, so try me." They are giving this arrogance because they don't know what crushing failure actually feels like. Once crushing failure is given via a randori, only then can one be truly humbled. You must accept sometimes you will be the hammer and sometimes you will be the nail. If you are the hammer all the time in the Dojo, then you will not learn true humility, you will learn arragance.

I know his name is Faras* damn auto correct. He has very interesting insights into how intense sparring/drilling needs to be. And how focusing on one art at a time allows you not to overload your system. From my personal experience long grinding wrestling practice with nothing more the hard drilling singles and doubles with the correct amount of live resistance Did more for my confidence in a physical scuffle anything else. Sometimes not all fights are to the death, as a teenager being able to assert dominance while rough housing with peers without having to resort to strikes is a fantastic tool. A few people that attempted to be bullies but in a "friendly" way found out that hours on the mat equal trump physical strength most of the time, and friendships were made. Striking has a place but so does grappling.

Everyone is always talking about pressure testing, mixing arts, ranges, tester methods, with the end result being some great guru of fight science, that's that, they forgot the second half of martial arts "Art". It would seem if you're hands are your paint brush your technical biomachinics would grow beyond measure. Most people worry about fighting which actually makes your fighting OK, however there is a layer system that you can learn over time that goes like this, triangle, circle, square, yin yang, insert anamal etc... structure. Form, cannon, list of techniques used in structure. Twei shew, sticky hands, two person form, ways to apply structure to two people. Push, press, butt, how to move someone's core position. I'm being a jerk here but concepts are based on the strengths of the art involved. Every art has its strengths, what I'm proposing is that there is no magic golden carrot just a lot of hard work.
