When I was a kid my older brother would play the entire Led Zeppelin IV album over and over again. My favorite part of the entire album was the mysterious and haunting voice on the song right before the infamous Stairway to Heaven call the Battle of Evermore. It wasn't until over 20 years later that I heard that voice again on the radio when a college station played Tam Lin by Fairport Convention and I discovered who that voice was. I've been in love with this voice ever since.
Now I am an old man, I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to hear Joan Baez's marvelous vibrato soprano at the Newport Folk Festival 52 years ago, and then again later in person; and over the years whenever I wanted to hear "Silver Dagger," or "Boots of Spanish Leather." Joni Mitchell's "I Think I'm Falling" has always likewise been a favorite, and I love her brash candid behavior as she lives her private life in Canada. Sandy Denny had an angelic voice, and I have been in love with Fairport Convention and her heart ripping voice for so many years. I regret the youth will not have the privilege of hearing such music. Perhaps they will. Perhaps..... Why did she have to die? Why do so many assholes live to torment people when Sandy and others, (Amy Winehouse, for example), must leave us?
I dont know why singers are subjected to such ppl who take kill and destroy ...the gift of song and the whirling mist of sensitivities are all from the muse god angel s choirs in heavenly places flowers that sing i dunno ..the other day i picked up my guitar and played a song ive been ill as of late but i managed to get l this song with vocals and sweet range ...i m sure i heard songers around me in the mist after i finished ....i heard sounds like voices coming from other places

As a young man I heard Tam Lin played on the radio (I think it was John Peel) and I bought the album Liege and Lief on the strength of that and I loved it. It was kind of different for me as I loved Free and blues rockers but Sandy's voice and the rest of the band just blew me away. Farewell Farewell knocked me for six. Island records had a load of great artists in those days on the label. Great times.
"Perhaps in the future love will renew....." So beautiful this song. Her voice so clear & defined! You can understand every word she so magically sings out, they cling to the soul. The good old days when there were so much less complications.....
When I first heard Sandy in '69 , I had never before heard a voice so beautiful - it's now 2012 and hers is still the voice I turn to for spiritual joy.
Just can listen to this song over and over again. What a truely astounding voice Sandy Denny had. I llove this song and the purest of voices she did have. Just listen to the incredible vocal power she had and this was one of her earlier songs when she was very, very young.
My whole life and through my youth i heard her on the battle of evermore, and so when i really began to discover her amazing body of work something felt so beautiful and familiar about her voice.I can and do listen to her for hours . I am always stunned and amazed at the incredible beauty of her voice and writing. She left us so much treasure,i hope she can feel all of our love up in heaven
She is truly remarkable. As I listened to this song it seems to be a variant of "Once I Had A True Love, But Now I Have None". The lyric of that traditional song grabbed me and I learned it & sang it. The Green Grow the Laurels I know is an American traditional song out of Texas, but nowhere near as lovely as this variant. Thats the thing about traditional music; you can find all kind of variants all over the English speaking world.
My favorite female singer of all time. This song is testament to Sandy's greatness. An absolutely exquisite and beautiful singing voice..Sandy voice was so sweet and beautiful in my opinion, there was no equal to her. Sadly and sorely missed...
I heard her in an obscure piece tonight on the Sirius XM 'Loft' channel en route from work. I got chills and nearly had to pull over onto the freeway shoulder. I wish she had been with us for an eternity. But, perhaps she is.
Ballard Frogman ......as long as Sandy’s glorious voice and beautiful music are remembered, “The Lady” will *never* be forgotten. Sandy “lives on” through her legacy.
@@heresjohnny999 Two quite different songs - they don't have the same Roud Folk Index number which means they have no connection (also, the briefest lyric comparison would make that obvious). Earliest written evidence of 'Laurel' is late 18th century broadsides from Edinburgh and London and titled 'Can't you love who you please'.
Thank you thank you thank you! for posting this incredible recording of possibly my favorite female voice that has been given the gift of grabbing deep to your Soul and reminding you what music is all about....I've been searching for Sandy's version of this for a long time!
Tuesdays and Thursdays as I recall, Out of Belsize Park Station, round the back by the beat-up tennis courts, 8pm there was a queue. There was a washing line of electric bulbs and some tannoy speakers, which repeated The Soft Machine's "We did it again". Roll your precious spliff here. Doors open past Robin Cousins and his bouncer and into the bar area, no larger than a small working man's club. Stage could just take 4 people but the kit was crammed in and teh mic stands would need watching. I lay down in the back of the room on the Paisley carpet. THye played their whole What We did on our Holiday Set. Sandy's voice filled every molecule of air. It was perfect. They sang "Meet on the Ledge". I thought it would last forever. Now I wait to meet on the ledge... it will then be forever
@sammyrocksu=hard to believe that that astonishing moment was generated live on a December night in 1966...45 years ago........and thank God captured on tape & enshrined here hopefully in perpetuity. A chilling & almost beyond-tears-heartbreaking genius performance.
Rossm3838 i just know she hears us all and is smiling as she knows she is still loved and her heart and mind have been given the peace and happiness that eluded her in this existence......rest easy sandy the dusky maiden will the voice of an angel.x
Certains ont le don de partager leur profondeur spirituelle. Son cadeau était beau, envoûtant et épanouissant tout à la fois. Une voix gracile venue du fond des âges....!
I too loved LZIV's "Battle..." It was like from some other universe where my clan hails. Then totally by accident I found Fairport's "Liege & Lief." Man, what an album! It was just like this song, full of dark gothic English folk.
I first heard of her via Battle Of Evermore/Led Zep IV, and went looking for her music. First album I came across was North Star Grassman and the Ravens which I quickly loved. I think it was only after that I found out about Fairport. This was in the mid 1980s when I was a schoolboy lol

Nice story, thanks.
If you have not already, listen to What we did on our Holidays.
We're lucky we live in an age now where it's so easy to find every song she ever sang. Totally different world than when Sandy was alive.
Impossible not to love her voice....best female folk singer all times...that is for sure
What a staggering voice.......still brings me tears after all these years.
Just wiping them from my eyes right now...

Joan and sandy are otherworldly talents
I still get goosebumps listening to Sandy, such poignant songs and her interpretation, those were the days
Sandy had one of the most beautiful voices ever, an angel

I was there too. Same reactions and still play the record I bought at the time. Blues rocker still too. 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Saw Free and Fairport many times. Loved both groups, both with great but very different singers.
there isn't anything more beautiful on this Earth than the voice of Sandy...IMPOSSIBLE!!!
Imposible...!!!
Possibly. But how about a Cuban cigar or vegan trifle?
"Perhaps in the future love will renew....." So beautiful this song. Her voice so clear & defined! You can understand every word she so magically sings out, they cling to the soul. The good old days when there were so much less complications.....
Her voice was MAGICAL.

No singer in pop history better voiced the sorrow of love lost than Sandy Denny. Martien

Some have the gift of sharing their spiritual depth. Her gift was beautiful, haunting and uplifting all at once. A voice of the ages...
She was a truth seeker and story teller
Totally agree..In a class of her own.
Yes, indeed.
There could only ever be one 'The Lady'. Always in my heart, my sweet glorious Sandy.

how much love in this voice!
This is absolutely ridiculously gorgeous......i can't even
Her voice is simply phenomenon
Beggars belief.
Led Zep brought me here. Sandy's voice was otherworldly, and this is such a beautiful song 🤍 Thank you so much for uploading this :)
Stunning voice! God Bless Sandy Denny ! dx
I didn't know she could play guitar so well...and I've been listening to her since 1974!
A beautiful song by a beautiful lady. Nobody comes close to this lovely voice.
I agree - no one comes close to this.
This is incredible. I have this as a favorite for years,,,,,, and every time I go back to it my jaw drops.
It breaks my heart, that Sandy doesn't get the recognition she deserves.
She does. It’s just that her audience is kind into a specific style of music. Those of us who love folk music know her.
I heard her in an obscure piece tonight on the Sirius XM 'Loft' channel en route from work. I got chills and nearly had to pull over onto the freeway shoulder. I wish she had been with us for an eternity. But, perhaps she is.
In records, in our memory, the Lady has never left us 😉
your story is your answer and they are both deeply wonderful..yay good news!

English folk at its very very best !
except its from N.Ireland or possibly even older as a trad Scottish song.
@@heresjohnny999 Sandy is English though.
@@heresjohnny999
Except there's no evidence for either of those as the song's point of origin which remains unclear.
@@Wotsitorlabart it is probably taken from Green Grow the Rashes Grow - A Robert Burns song

greatest female voice bar none and I love many. Of recent times I would say Beth Gibbons has this purity of voice also but seldom uses it.
