I'm so glad she has been able to relocate and surround herself with such great young talent. Her parents deserve much respect.
Jeeze, what a Pro, did anybody notice her drop a stick on the intro, nobody in the band did, and none in the audiance I imagine. Dropped a stick, recovered said stick without missing a beat, this girl continues to amaze me
Yoyoka ‘Pocket’ Soma 5:26 👍🏼✌🏼👏🏼
Oh sh...!! Jazz! Yoyoka is officially a percussionist!! I actually met the Yellowjackets when they played at the Manchester Craftsman Guild in Pittsburgh back in the 90s. My buddy was a pro photographer and they contracted him to shoot their show. Really personable bunch of players. That was my fusion era....was big into Spyro Gyra, Fourplay, Rippingtons, Pat Metheny, Larry Coryell (another one I met), so many good times.
No matter the genre or the setting, Yoyoka's drumming is excellent and seems effortless. 🙂
Jazz! this is further proof of Yoyoka's talent and versatility. Amazing! 😊
This band is actually really good. Very complex composition.
Just one word to describe Yoyoka, amazing. Yoyoka has this facility to nuance her drumming well according to the different musicians with whom she plays.
Just when you thought we'd seen the depths of Yoyoka's talent, we hear this impeccable jazz performance like they've all been gigging for years. The band is spectacular. Let's hope for a well produced recording and video.
I am beyond thrilled to hear Yoyoka playing jazz and so fabulously so.
OMG have listened to this half a dozen times now and totally astounded as how fluid her jazz interpretations are. As if she's been playing jazz forever...
Not sure what to say about this extraordinary musician. Love her finesse on the cymbals. Love the ensemble here. Fantastic fun for me listening to my favorite drummer. Arigato Yoyoka!
Did anyone else notice that Yoyoka is in 7th grade and the next youngest member of this band is in 10th grade. Wow. What I hope most for her is that she is able to find good friends in this new country. That she is able to learn to communicate well in English and still become her true self.
Has she moved? To USA,? UK? Seriously not in Japan. That makes me worry it's not a good time and someone's life for a big change like that
And please notice that this is not an average school band. Even for an art school.
Just a quick google search shows that these kids are one of the best Bay Area can offer. They are also professional with many live performances (for years), tours, endorsements, tutelage...
To put Yoyoka in the band with them is a big recognition for her.
Of course, her talent is obvious to everyone, but still...
She is the youngest by far, just came from another part of the world, cultural and language barriers, she wasn't into jazz until recently...
And, of course, no problems for her, she fits perfectly. This shows how exceptional she is.
I think she’ll be the youngest in whatever band she plays with for awhile esp. playing with her level or same caliber. Kudos to the other players here but I think it’s quite a step down for her after seeing her play with legends like a pro, to be honest. But typical of her to be gracious. The kid just wants to play and it’s a testament to her dedication as an artist and musician.
She is in Grade 7 for all subjects except music and production where she attends the high school classes.
That young lady is very smart . She will do just fine 😊
HAPPY...HAPPY...HAPPY. So glad YOYO and family are getting Universal exposure they so rightfully deserve...Finally. My recollection...this music was called Jazz Fusion back in the 80's. Great then..Fire Now.
💚ya Yoyoka ✨
YOYOKA doing jazz like she had been doing it for decades, smooth and articulate. Such a pro!
I'm not sure if I envy or pity her drum teacher. She's already probably a better drummer than the teacher and instantly grasps any concept she's presented with, then proceeds to absolutely nail it every time with barely any practice.
Did you notice the classic jazz grip (traditional grip) on her left stick?
@@Glen.Black. of course!
Agree. She's good in rock and jazz. Pretty versatile...

😅😅😅
What’s kind of mind shattering is that Yoyoka is an endorsed, sponsored musician with her own signature snare entering a school for the arts 7th grade class!🤯🤯🤯🤯
She attends the high school classes for music and production
@@Rob-Yule
Well yes, of course you’re right about that! I’m just saying how humbling it is for me that she’s accomplished so much and is already so amazing as a middle schooler. 💪🏻🤘🏻
@@bigbrutalbassbeer410 Absolutely! She is in fact a professional by any measurement! At least being at a school where talent is respected and encouraged is a massive benefit to YOYOKA. In several zoom calls via Patreon, she would state how in her music classes in Japan she got to clap the time. No allowance for creativity. One of key reasons for moving to the US. She is a very humble person who has zero vanity.
5:26 + 5:57 The snare sounds so tasty. My favourite parts of this performance.
I wasn't expecting Rush Hour by Yellowjackets! Great stuff!!
These kids are amazing! Great job! Yoyoka, you can play any genre…such a versatile musician!
JAZZ BY GOSH, IMPRESSIVE PROF VERY IMPRESSIVE
When I heard her playing Jeff Beck's LED BOOTS several weeks ago I was literally Blown away, I was just a couple of years older than what she is now when I discovered that album and she's playing it as if she played on the album...
So swingy! Yoyoka is wonderful.
Yoyoka can play any style, the important thing is that she plays what she prefers, she will discover it over the years, congratulations
Yoyoka's musical future guaranteed.
CRUSHING IT!!! Truly an amazing job by all, really enjoyed everyone’s solos. 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That’s what I am always impressed with Yoyoka, is your versatility! Any genre of music, anytime. That’s what’s going to keep you popular with the bands seeking a great drummer.
Great audio ~
I bet the band is surprised how well it came together thanks to Yoyoka's ability to gel everything without necessarily being noticed. She's going to elevate the whole school.
Excellent comment, I too believe that the whole school will benefit from her genius.
I love how she plays what is required for the music. No ego in the way. She just does her job as a drummer.
Jazzyoka, rockyoka, funkyoka... she can handle it all.
She's doing it again! Says she can't play Jazz and then nails it! Nice semi-drum solo. Not bad for someone who says they can't play jazz!
Just like she can’t do funk😂
Imagine being the drum teacher tasked with educating the child who has already developed to a higher level of skill than most professional adult drummers...
Then she remembered she has been playing jazz since she was seven.
@@dannelson6980 yep... that "Smoky" cover she did back then is outrageous!
@@richardharrold9736 Exactly, but the nice thing about YOYOKA is she still listens and does actually learn from them. I have seen positive changes in her already since attending this school. She wants to know everything about everything. Another thing is, I was worried about her being acclimated into the western culture, and she is doing great! I was afraid, in a regular school teenagers would be jealous, but this being a performing arts school, the are motivated by her and give her the respect she deserves. I'm sure she helps teach others things they struggle with also. And being comfortable in that environment and getting a lot of help with English is great. Win - Win for everyone!
涼しげにJAZZデビュー!いつか演奏してくれるとは思っていましたので驚きませんが、唐突にその時が来ました。さすが余裕ですね。これからもRock & Jazzでお願いします!とても嬉しい気分!😀😀😀
this is really awsome. And this just gave me the motivation i needed right when i decided to get back into drums. Awsome video. Keep it up!
Jazz from what I understand it’s not something Yoyoka has played much, but it may end up becoming music she’ll grow to love playing because of the ease out which you can improvise and be much more free spirited with this type of music.. I know I’ve been playing big band and jazz music since the 70s… it also allows for a drummer to relax their feet as it’s more about accents when it comes to the bass drum… as always, peace, love, joy, and hope to you and yours
最後の方…トラディショナルグリップでしたよね😅
オールマイティYOYOKA👍👏
What a difference in style from yesterday's Alanis Morisette cover. You would think it was two different people. Yoyoka can adapt to any style!♥🥁
She is VERY versatile...from Jeff Beck to Alanis to todays video. Hope you see her next video coming out doing a cover of Tower of Power, amazing!
At 13, she has become an icon in music, I mean Led Zeppelin and other rock covers, and jazz.. She’s awesome..
Jazzy Yoyoka and friends! That was great - nice and light, refreshing, spontaneous, fun!
Just perfect
So, happy for you YOYOKA. Keep growing your musical tastes.
Oh, she does jazz now. And here we thought she only did the easy stuff like Neil Peart or John Bonham covers. As usual she made it look easy.
Man Shes covering it all!!! I'm loving it!!
Yoyoka-chan, you’re so amazing! Jazz now? Subarashi desu!!! You’re a great musician in every genre you play 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
JAZZY YOYOKA!! Will someone tell her about funky jazz? I mean Zappa at the Roxy…..
imagine being in any school band with her
Wow that was so good! Loved all the solos! Cheers and God Bless!...
Nice jazz drums
Thanks for sharing = )
When I went to school, we had a talent show every year, but nothing in it could compare to this. Here it is just another typical school day.
Wow, you guys are great and have good taste in music. I saw The Yellowjackets & Steps Ahead at Lincoln Center years ago, I think it was 1989, same year they released Politics. Only thing missing for me is a Steely Dan cover.
Nice!
Working dat solo like a beast!!
ジャズ!? ドラマーとしての幅が広がりますね。これは貴重な演奏動画!!嬉しいな~♪
これからもぜひ挑戦してください!
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Woohoo 🙌
Mouth agape…now a big smile!
Can your left hand keep up with your right hand? Regardless amazing dexterity and to how you are applying it to the rhythm.
Yoka does jazz too.... YAY
joy
it's so cool she goes to the "school of rock"
these kids are good!
dig it. goes down smooth
Very nice Yoyoka!
Drum solo at 05:21
impressive! i grew up in alameda and oakland. in concord now.
Great performance by all concerned. Missed the close mikes on the drums though, getting every detail. But I could hear Yoyoka well enough to appreciate her solid contribution, bubbling along and moving everything forward with lots interesting bits of articulation. (not a drummer, sorry for lack of drumming vocabulary.)
Camera is too far away to see what her jazz socks look like.
welcome to oakland YOYOKA. Now how do I get a chance to see her live? Hope she might be doing some gigs in the area. Please connect me if you know.
whoaaa kanade sato fan .
Smooth! Look out Yoshi's👍
Learning some jazz will only expand your abilities and is the natural progression of musicians journey of improving by challeging yourself with more complex patterns and time. This will be an enhancement to any style that she will utimately play. Keep it going, learn to read music, be able to sight read, though session work is no longer a big part of the industry, it will help you in the long run
Yoyoka can easily hold her own with any musicians, playing whatever genre they choose! ( although she does look a bit bored) 😉 Not the same Yellowjackets I saw back in the late 90's, early 2000's, right? Those guys must be a bit older looking by now, right? Although Yoyoka could play with them as well!
From an article in Japanese press ""Maybe my first language is drums, so I've never really liked what I'm playing, and when I'm playing, I'm just having fun. I'm not nervous, and I'm playing while thinking about everyday things like, 'What's for dinner today?'" says YOYOKA."
"Nefertiti," by Wayne Shorter, in Miles Davis's version. Let's see what Yoyoka would do with Tony Williams's part.
Given enough time I'll bet she would knock that out of the park. It seems if she wants to play something she learns it. She's spent her whole life doing just that!
Close your eyes - use the force to see.
サいっこう‐‐にfantastic!!(´•৺•́)ってやつだ!!🌟

いつもありがとうございます!誕生日おめでとうございます🎂
She does that before breakfast.
SAX!
皆より出しゃばって‼︎
エレキマンドリンの存在を初めて知った。
But the bass player!
Child’s play. She handled that little bubu like a pro and got on with the piece like she’s playing this type of music for years. Onyx is an exception of course. She killed that piece at age 7. (SMH) … But are we really surprised by this? IMHO, this is a step down for her, no disrespect to the other musicians here (and they’re good), but I think they know they’re lucky to play with her. And it’s noted that she’s the youngest in this group but her level is way beyond her years. And nothing can also compare her experience in playing with legends (pros) and her time on stage. But I’m always impressed with her graciousness though to play with whoever no matter what level. This young lady just wants to play. A great testament of her dedication to music and her commitment to improve/learn more on her chosen craft. ❤👍🏼✌🏼👌🏼
Music is music, and to say that she’s taking a step down to play with others!!! do better🤮
@@FUBAR1986 I understand that music is music. Differentiating whether it’s good or not is subjective but I also understand there’s amateur and there’s professional. I merely point out that her level as a musician esp. her experience are pro-level. And I’m sure that no one can dispute that. And there’s also a difference between playing with professionals vs playing with HS students, no matter how good they are.
Being careful to stay on the same level as the kids.
She dropped a drum stick at the start. Oops. 😲
Although I'm not a big jazz fan it's great to see you interact with other hope you're enjoying that you're doing well
That's a tiny guitar!
Yellowjackets? Man...
And knocking it out if the park too!
Who is on bass? (That's my instrument) well done!
See description.
@@janbleeker um, yea. Kick me lol. Thanks.

Incredible mechanic cover, where emotion is missing , just technical , no interest, sorry.
Kind of annoyed the other band members didn't recognize Yoyoka's turn to have a solo.😒
They did, just subtle
They did.
