Congrats on all the Damascus work, man! I absolutely love the ball bearing tsuba. And yeah, that copper patina is epic too. I knew from the first pic you shared that it would make for a killer thumbnail! Cheers!!!
Thanks. Im bad at thumbnails but this one was easy since the black and blue make good contrast.
This is not damascus
DAMASCUS DOES NOT FUCKING EXSIST. PERIOD. This and every other metal like it are PATTERN WELDED STEEL.
Damascus even when it did exsist was a fucking horrible metal. It was beautiful, yes. It could hold a razors edge, yes. However if you dropped it on the fucking ground it would shatter like glass. Why do you think they used silk to demonstrate its sharpness!? Because anything else would chip the edge.
Damascus was a decorative steel. It had over 2% carbon content making it complete shit. Also just making a raw ingot could take up to 5 days of continuous work. It was a crucible "steel". Being made that way is what gave it, it's pattern. A pattern that no modern day Blacksmith has ever even come close to reproducing.
One day very soon the FTC is going to weigh in on this and ban the branding "Damascus" cause it's a fucking lie, it's false advertising. No one is making Damascus. Ever.
@@corbeauyannis8254 No one knows the real recipe for Damascus that knowledge was lost a couple hundred years ago.
@@paladinsmith7050 His point exactly... stop calling shit Damascus when it's not... NO one can make that stuff anymore.. This is Acid Etched billet stacking, I get it that doesn't sound cool but to lie just to market your shit product is sad as fuck. Just like Corbeau I too find it annoying when people call this garbage Damascus, some run of the mill backyard blacksmith couldn't ever make a Damascus blade, they were made by true craftsmen.
Every time I see a modern blacksmith forging any kind of blade, I also think about how sword makers had to spend literal hours using a hammer and anvil to do this, taking so much time and patience. I have mad respect for those who take part in this process.
According to John from Old Hickory Forge, length of the sword determined by user height, for his extra tall 6'4" or so frame, his is supposed to be about 30" blade.
Im 5'9" and i was going for a 30" but forged a 28" and ended up cutting they trouble areas and ended up with a 24.5" which is just over the upper limit of a wakizashi or a kodachi.
Fun Fact: wakizashi typically was the blade used for beheading@@JPsBladeworks
@snakenbits4279 this blade was used to behead a pumpkin
Awesome work man! Make sure you show off the work at the end of the video a little longer with some nice pictures. Right now the final result was just flashed by. Your work is worth showing off.

why do modern sword makers use so much metal? i watched a japanese master make a Katana n the amount of metal they use is literally EXACTLY the right amount. of course they do it all by hand but still makes me wonder why modern smiths use so much metal
Different smiths have different reasons. Most call it sacrificial steel. Make a mistake, cut it off, still got steel to play around with.
Not to mention when doing certain types of damascus, the kerf loss can be extreme, especially with feather damascus for example.
I often make extra billet to produce cooking knives, kiridashi, etc. may as well! Also, matching gane in a wakizashi or tanto can be cool.
You can get quite precise with steel quantity if you want to. In Japan steel is a valuable natural resource and in the US its cheap and plentiful. Go price some hitachi blue paper steel compared to a chunk of 1095.
It all depends on what steel you use. Most damascus must be cut to shape, not forged, because that would mess up the pattern. Some people like extra steel to have the freedom to change the blade on the fly. That japanese Smith knew what he wanted to do and probably made many before.
Cause they all stupid content creator with only online experience 😂😂
Because material is more ready and not as costly. Plus you can reuse things you cut off and what you grind off if you want. 💯
Out of the park! Killer work bro! Gorgeous work!
Thank you. Glad you liked it. A lot of stress went into this build 😂
This is truly a work of art! i love swords in general, and i love the Katana, but this took that to another level. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks glad you liked it
Totally agree...stunning job
This looks like a bunch of fun.
What a beautiful finished product.
It was loads of fun and stress.
The way that billet slid out of the canister was just...
The most satisfying thing I've seen in a long time. Wow. Don't you wish everything was that easy in metal working? 😂😂 my wife asked me what was wrong because i made a strange noise when i saw it.
The key is luck sprinkle with a lot of prep...mainly luck 🤣
Yes, that was as impressive as anything else in the build.
It was bs lol , lots of editing in his video . There’s a reason why you never saw a can “ peel “ off like that
Oh man! I was stressed watching the cold shuts from the twist. I’ve had that happen before too and it’s awful! I’m glad that you were able to work through it! 🎉🎉🎉
I had a few and it sucked. Normally i would grind all of them out in between the forging process but the time limit had me stressing over getting done.
Easily the most beautiful katana I've ever seen! The aged copper was brilliant!
Massive congratulations on the win this time, it’s been cool seeing your work just get better and better as time has gone on.

enviando-os Josué também às suas tendas os abençoou;

Absolutely Stunningly Gorgeous piece of Art
Man! I was never a fan of canister, but you pulled this off nicely with that twist. Love the oxidized copper. Brilliant dude! ❤
Thank you. I play a lot with canister damascus. It gives a lot of freedom and headache to those that dont spray their cans for easy release

A joy to watch. And some very interesting techniques! The result is amazing.
Great build, JP!! Truly one of your best! Kept me engaged the whole time! 👏🏻
Thank you. Glad you liked it. It was a whole new experience making a katana. Plenty difficult with all its pieces involved.
Dude! I think this has been one of your best entries yet! I love the blue finish! Beautiful sword. 🤘
Thanks. That blue patina took the build to a whole different level. Im glad i took the risk because i had never done a copper patina before.
Such an appreciation for the work and art that I was able to witness here. You did great sir, thank for this upload like for real 🎉
I've never seen anyone use chemistry this efficiently in forging.
Nice work, man!
Forging is the cooler chemistry
I wish i could do chemistry
I think i like it better when you narrated the videoes ( talked about what you were doing and things that were presenting issues or how you avoided the issues) dont sell out stay true to yourself and what got you here ! 😊😊😊
This video was made before i started narrating
@@JPsBladeworkso: le gasp!
this is just great! looks magical! 👍
Perhaps the defect appeared due to the fact that you assembled the forging unevenly and immediately completely filled the bearings and then tried to fill the voids with powder. When you start pulling or twisting the workpiece, I advise you to sprinkle borax
Ive never sprinkled borax inside a can bit it might be a thought. I think it came from the twist. I dont think it was too noticeable in the video but i sheared it a little in my first twist. I over twisted and that caused parts to come up. I guess i pushed it back once i forged it back into a bar and missed it when i did my cut for the tip
@@JPsBladeworksYou definitely can’t put borax inside, but when you remove the casing or twist it you need to pour it in. Most likely, there was simply emptiness inside and the metal was not welded. But the katana is great
@@DamnWoodWorker I borax all my billets after they come out of the casing. I just dont show it on the video because it just lengths an already long video. Normally Canister damascus comes out with surface cracks so its always safe to pour some borax even if its not needed. Thank you for the advice. I appreciate it.
Dope forged design 👍🏾
It's beautiful, but I like the tsuba most of all. If you could figure a way to do that with all the other small metal parts instead of the copper, it would be even better. Maybe smaller bearings.
That my friend is an absolutely GORGEOUS blade! Well freaking done bud!
That turned out absolutely gorgeous 👍 I love the twist bearing canister it's one of my favorite patterns. One day I'm going to get a press and try it
Definitely try it. I have a chef knife on my desk from the same stuff. Cant wait to finish it up so i can check out how the pattern looks on a wider surface.

Hello from Azerbaijan 🇦🇿🔥
Greetings!
i've watched a lot of these style videos over the last few years, I've got to say. The removal of the canister beautiful and clean. i couldn't even guess how many i've watched, new to your channel btw. but i've never seen one come out that clean and smooth. great work.
very nice blade.
Its all in the prep. Thanks for watching
I swear the U.S probably has more katanas in it than Japan or maybe even the rest of the world.
definitely not
Even if we did, they're nowhere near the same quality
@@kisukeurahara1832Ancient smithing methods are cool as hell and definitely need to be respected but given the significantly better metals and more advanced machinery it's probably safe to say there's no way the quality is significantly higher than the quality that exists everywhere else.
@@moresomoze The Japanese katanas are on a completely different level in terms of craftsmanship from my experience. A polisher can take up to a month to polish one sword. You can't replicate that with a simple belt sander.
@moresomoze you have NO idea please do some research, Japanese make the best katanas hands down 😊❤
Admirable work on the sword. Meaning no disrespect, please consider advice from someone who began training with katana in 1966, eventually in two schools, one of which has a genealogy going back prior to 1580. The katana cut is not like swinging a baseball bat. The left hand is on the kashira (pommel) with the ring and little finger under it. Also, the power of the cut is mostly from the left hand pulling toward the body or upward very slightly at the very end of the cut so that the cut is elliptical at the end rather than circular. Difficult to execute, the reason why training even in the basics takes years.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone smash a can vertically like that for the first press. That was neat. Looked like the can almost peeled itself off right then.
I always do top first to weld it because its pressured from all sides since the can is one solid piece. I used to do sides and they would crack or pop and create unwanted bulges and cracks at the end of the finished billets.
@@JPsBladeworks it appears to work out great, love that pattern! Well done sir!
@@TroubledOnePaydirt thank you. I appreciate you watching.
Really neat job. And at least is nice to see that some still understand the concept of a katana.
You spend days making this and editing only to show none of the finished work. I’m glad I skipped through parts that were dull only to find nothing at the end. Good job for your first attempt.
Its okay i appreciate you.
Killer look! I may try this now that I have figured out how to patina copper. The last one I did was just like this with a sanmai blade, and fire-red copper for everythint.

More like I was just glad it worked out and I didn't ruin all the work 🙃
The time and effort shows, and the oxidized copper is so cool. The copper’s style would be cool implemented in a comic or manga.
I would love to work at your side for about a week! Master to say the least. Skill is beyond anything i been doing ,seeing,or studying!
8:51 to me, it feels like folding the Steel would’ve help prevent these sorts of external issues from showing up on the blade.
If i did that i would lose the pattern.
The green finish on the copper and the beautiful damascus pattern make this look like something out of legend.
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
I.
Do like the way the twisted Damascus looks on the blade. There's a lot of problems making that, but you handle it pretty good. It really presents well. Unfortunately, you had to cut about 4 inches out of the blade, but that's alright, the blade itself looks very good.
Really dig the pattern, like flames licking the blade, and the oxidised copper is a really funky touch too.
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
i've heard that rounding the corners of your bar before you twist it will help reduce those cracks and blemishes. file them off, or hammer chamfers on them, then heat the bar and twist. you dont need to turn it into a perfect octagon, but knocking down the corners helps
Great video, really well done JP.

Thank you. Glad you liked it.
Fantastic build with just hand tools and skill/knowledge. Great shipwreck on copper pieces. Thanks for the share.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.
The reason for this problem that led to the sword being cut and shortened is that you did not cut the steel into more than one piece and re-melt it and then hammer it.
man that is a beautiful sword! nice Job on the canister as well. wish all mine came off that clean! very well done!
Thank you. Its all in the spray paint...and a bit of luck...okay a lot of luck 😅
The patina on the copper is such a unique touch!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL WEAPON!!!
Edit: btw does this ball bearing+nickel powder technique still creates a strong alloy or is sacrificing structure for beauty (making it even harder to built)
Verdi gris is amazing. Well done.
I’ve never seen this process before. Great job 👏🏽
4:12 for someone reason your head bopping in and out of frame is hilarious to me 😂
I see my pain twisting steel causes you amusement 🤣
Just remember to re-square lightly and grind back the billet after twist before drawing it out to prevent those cold shuts 😉
Nice can peel, honestly cleanest I think I’ve seen.
Nice job but I would question it in a Forged in Fire style strength test. I expect one of those cold shuts would blow it apart.
I agree. Normally i would take all the precautions on keeping it as clean as possible to minimize cracks but i was low on time and this was for a youtube challenge so corners where cut. Im going to build another one once i get a chance and will take my time with it to get everything right...hopefully

@@JPsBladeworks Yeah that was my thought process haha! And thank you so much! 😁🙏
Wow! Super interesting method with super attractive results. Great job! 😊
Glad you like it!
So those cracks you find on the metal is from cold working. The metal wasn’t hot enough to fuse when you hammered it in the early stages and it folded over a void. Even though you filed it down, there is likely still microscopic cracks in those areas. Apologies if this seems overcritical but it’s an issue I ran into when making my first projects.
Stunning!
Thank you
This blade is so awesome, I have watched this video so many times now. It would be awesome to know how to do this.
Glad you liked it. Ive been thinking of re editing the video and adding voice over but im not sure if ill do that or not yet.
this is amazing, Amakuni is probably impressed
That's one of the coolest patterns I've ever seen.
I’m absolutely blown away by this amazing artwork! You’ve definitely earned my sub and I’m looking forward to watching more of your content!
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Forging the bevels, not only grinding, to make it more legit and also avoid those fold-over cold shuts you had (mostly made by not cleaning up the sides with a grind after twisting), by moving material to the edge. So much work on the initial billet and patterning, AND the general length/shape forging. Not sure why then to shortcut the edge bevel and just leave such a block beast of a profile (as of 8.30min in).
Its a competition. I was low on time. Sacrifices were made. I dont lose sleep over it.
@@JPsBladeworks oh didn't realise from the start it was in a comp and all. The work was nice, and good refinement on the pieces and polish, assembly. Cutting the kiseki (blade tip) often gives a quite different result to forging it in, but you made it all work! Using the press for holding the twist was smart. And for horizontal twisting, normally going vertical as most ppl do, works muscles harder
Amazing work, craftsmanship, and insane detail.
Thank you
Not bad! Lots of luck in your future projects!
