Did not start playing Starcraft until 2010 Brood war and began playing SC2 in 2013. I go back and forth from Sc2 to COH and play AOE3 as well. RTS games are the best.

These low APM guides are like nature documentaries for me. No intention to actually use the knowledge but it is entertaining and I can watch them almost endlessly.
I'm almost 35 years old and my absolute max apm as Terran is 140. Usually I can win games in diamond league with less than 100 apm, though against a diamond 1 player I will have to go near my limit. Judging by my father's current condition at 75 years old, I think I'll remain this fast until at least 50 years old.
1:30:47 - For anyone who's curious, there's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome for the wrist (technically it affects from the thumb to half of the ring finger), there's Trigger Finger (and Trigger thumb) for each finger, there's Guyon Canal Syndrome (wrist, affects the ring figner and little finger) and there's De Quervain's Syndrome (affects the back of the thumb/wrist). And they are more common than the average person may realize, especially in the age of the internet. Symptoms can range from mild to devastating (often requiring surgery and rehabilitation).
I am 48 and still hit 200 APM when playing as Zerg, and I use a trackball to play. The problem after age 31 is slow reaction time and not low APM. So unit micro is harder (peak APM in combat) and will continue to get worse as you get older. So don't expect to micro units as well as a young sprout can. That does not mean your average APM will fall by half until your probably 60+. Unit micro is very important (peak APM in combat) for the top players like Winter, but you can still make it into the top 10% of players. So your never to old or young to play. You just may not win a pro league competition against someone under 32 with much higher peak APM.
Hi plat, sometimes low diamond here. I've watched many angry coach episodes, and every time winter says if your doing this this or this, NO REAPER FOR YOU! And I always fit that list perfectly. So 10 years and I've never built a reaper. Needless to say my macro is better for it. MAKE HYDRAS TIER ONE, den unlocks after pool, upgrades unlock after lair. This will also make potential lurker timing similar to tank timing (since when lair pops you will already have a den done so you can build lurker den immediately and you may already have a couple hydras) Also winter - "they can only build on creep" them - Hides spire in corner under ovy creep. haven't seen anyone do it yet but I always wonder why no one does. I would but mutas are terrible unless you can micro them.
When you are building your spotting depots, while holding shift (to keep building the depots) if you RIGHT click on the minimap it will move the camera there and then you can drop a depot. This saves you from having to scroll around.

I was obsessed with the original starcraft, would stay home from school to play it, the only game I was ever truly addicted too. When SC2 came out I was afraid to play it, didn't wanna get addicted. I didn't buy the game until heart of the swarm came out. I never got addicted to SC2, since then I've been a on again off again player. Started playing again recently. I'm a very low APM player, i average between 20-35, part of it is intentional though, I wanna take it easy. Of course I suck and lose almost every game, but I get better over time. Protoss is my best but I think Terran's are the coolest. So I've been trying to get better with Terran lately. Never had a good handle on Zerg in SC1 or SC2. You're never too old to play a video game, but nature isn't kind to your twitch reflexes. You can maintain your skills if you work at it, but it takes more work as time goes on. At 41 I'm a shadow of my former self when it comes to skill in video games. The only types of games where my skills have not atrophied is turn based strategy and RPG, and fighting games as I practice enough to maintain some of those skills.
I am 26. I feel old. My friend, thats a year older than me told me that we are too old to play starcraft. BUT i didnt want to listen and this actually gave me motivation to finally learn to play it comfortably. (without all the depression and stuff :D) So what i did was playing a few bot games (like winter always said do one daily to warm up and look at counter how long it takes you to 200/200) to really get like.. to a point were the macro is less of a stroke. Idk how to better describe it but i felt like okay yea i know how to 200/200. and max. And that really is all it kinda needs to play pvp or even ladder. The micro and strats and cheese and the fun will come from alone when u learn from every game :)

I just turned 36 this month and it's easy for me to reach 150-200 APM across all races easily. APM is not a true indicator of skill, it just shows how fast you can click and punch keys on the keyboard.
Thanks for doing this, I was @ the Sc2 release date in the highest league but then Sc2 became more and more work and the fun factor was no longer there. Work I have at @work when I game I want to have fun so I gave up the ranked game but thanks to this video even 1v1 is fun again
For the new people, or people who have a hard time enjoying the game because it is so stressful, I recommend Big Game Hunters. In this mode, you never mine out of resources, meaning you never need to expand, just build.
Bae Jae-Min, better known by his game name "Knee," is the one of the best players in the world for Tekken at his current age of 36. There's also a whole bunch more older guys and gals for Tekken who still are playing strong tekken at all levels of play. I believe that people can be older and still play decently. Speaking of fighting games, that's what a lot of good fighting game players do. They'll figure out the nuances of other characters and sometimes even learn how to play those other characters to further their knowledge and understanding. To bring it back around, this is a big reason why Knee is insanely strong.

I did that mines-and-marines-vs-carrier thing just last week. Very bad! But after I traitor mined my own forces to death, I rebuilt and kept the mines away from my own forces and that worked fine.
As late as I am, I'd like to add to "Big Smoke"'s point that I, as an absolute trash player with low APM have habitually just didn't do anything at times for minutes. Granted, the last time I played was probably before LotV.
It's funny, it makes no sense that the missile from a widow mine would do a lot of friendly splash to friendly units when hitting interceptors, but the missile from a liberator detonating in the same place (right over the friendly units) killing the same target (interceptors) causes no friendly splash damage 🤔
1:27:39 I mean, just look at any old musician playing piano or guitar. Jordan Rudess you name it. It def has nothing to do with physical capabilitys. My experience is rather the older you get the less motivated you are to put in the critical time needed to learn/maintain the skills.

Would be nice if you had a mod that capped your APM for you. Like, a mod that would only allow a maximum APM, and when that APM limit is hit you have to wait. Or, force a small cooldown period after each action which if given an input immediately after each cooldown would come out to that APM limit

Serious and probably incredibly dumb question, but isn't it better to build more barracks rather than putting reactors on them? If we treat one gas as being worth three minerals because it mines slower and is used for more powerful tech anyways (also because mules let terran mine minerals faster), an extra barracks (including lost mining time) isn't much more expensive than a reactor anyways, from what I can tell (about 210 minerals for a rax compared to a reactor worth 200 in the case that gas is about 3 minerals). Since marines are fairly fragile and a lot of the power in terran seems to come from liberators, tanks, ghosts, and vikings, I would imagine that the extra gas early could be a worthwhile tradeoff. Or am I overvaluing the gas?

vikings if they have air. liberators if they dont. for example if enemy is protos with chargelots, immortals, archons or zerg with roach hydra or roach ravenger i dont think you should be building vikings. but since usually most builds have some air units vikings are pretty good. for example zerg almost always have vipers to counter tanks.

That’s mostly because they started playing when they were kids, and kept playing so they have a decade+ of experience. Obviously the younger you are the faster your decision making is as well but I think the fact they’ve been playing since 12-14 years of age and have all that experience is the main factor. Back in the day when the game just came out, you had tons of mid 20’s early 30’s pros. ThorZaIN comes to mind as a pretty old fella as well as WhiteRa
My question is in the first game what if he would have gone collosus or storm with the carriers? What is the good counter composition? I guess ghost for storm and vikings for collosus in addition to mass marine for the carriers?
Hey Winter. I'm 41. How did you knew I just installed Starcraft 2 again ? (26Gb). Not that I plan to play enough, just the fun of building things in the game then get killed. Tried it a few hours ago, I'm just not fast enough to not bank resources and have no larva. Just getting used to mass produce drones for now.

ATM, playing ok is not my aim, just practising, I find SC matchup videos entertaining (probably more than playing myself), so I decided to see if I could have as much fun by actually playing. Will probably have hard times, haha, but that's part of it :D I played a little a couple of years ago, beat the hardest AI then started the placement. I find it funny I built all the bad habits of playing AI instead of real players ranted in those videos. Unfortunately, real life things, new job, etc, then covid (ie work harder...) no more time. I was surprised only 26Gb were required this time, it needed like 100 before. I wonder if people out there are angry at noobs like me who are obviously not good at all, like, they crush me, and I keep doing my stuff til I can't. In videos, it is expected you GG when it's already over, thing is, I'm practising, I know it's over, but If I leave right away, I barely learn anything. Trying to recover part of the build is also part of the learning while expecting the most savage strategic breaking (AI just usually attack move and it takes ages to kill all your stuff)
4´th Part of this Series and somehow the Rally-Depo got lost after his first few Games, even though it should build up on it, as a good Habbit instead of just avoiding the bad Ones.
Why do you build depots as spotters? I get that they increase your supply and scout but if you lose em you get supply blocked and have to build another or drop supply to compensate. Wouldn't it be cheaper to build auto turrets? Or do depot have better sight or something?
Anyone have any tips for spotting ghosts? I don't mean when they are cloaked; I mean when they are mixed in with a terran army. They are so small and look enough like marines that it takes me a lot of concentration to distinguish them. And I think the only way to counter them is to distinguish and focus on them (ie. feedback). As I see it, their most distinguishing feature is their death screams, which doesn't help, and their not stimming, which can help but only when everything else is stimming.
I feel like the rank distribution has gotten pretty wonky in the last few years. I run into players in plat that can be from extremely competent to literally they don't know how to build a second base
I know these videos are intended to debunk the myth that you need high APM for SC2. APM is however not the reason why I cant bother actually playing the game, it's however the fact that the game is just too fast for me in general and it stresses me out to the point where I dont have fun playing it. At one point I even started getting nightmares about getting overwhelmed in SC2, so that wasnt sustainable for my long term health. Which is a shame, because I think strategy games are fun and SC2 in particular. But since the game speed ("fastest") is tuned for spazzy 17 year olds, it's not for me so I'll rather just play good old turn-based Civ 6.
As I rushed to top of gold with bc rush, and the match making decides to humble me with plat and diamond players that can counter bc rush so back to drawing board lol
i have a problem with tunnel vision and getting focused on one or two things. got any thoughts on what race would be easier for me to work on? or any ideas on how to break tunnel vision?
Control groups and camera locations really help me. I set them up as soon as possible, and try to use them without the mouse as much as possible, as it is faster than clicking on anything.

People tend not to use the building space behind the mineral lines. There is where I tend to build my supply depots.
2:05:10 You may be right but there's a flaw in at least part of your reasoning. If I see a Part 6 and I haven't seen Part 1 yet, I might watch part 1 instead of 6. But you still get a view that was inspired by me seeing part 6 in my feed.
Possibly a better way than numbering would be to put the league in the title. If I see Low APM Diamond Terran and I'm a diamond terran, there's a very good chance I'll tune in.

Serious and probably incredibly dumb question, but isn't it better to build more barracks rather than putting reactors on them? If we treat one gas as being worth three minerals because it mines slower and is used for more powerful tech anyways (also because mules let terran mine minerals faster), an extra barracks (including lost mining time) isn't much more expensive than a reactor anyways, from what I can tell (about 210 minerals for a rax compared to a reactor worth 200 in the case that gas is about 3 minerals). Since marines are fairly fragile and a lot of the power in terran seems to come from liberators, tanks, ghosts, and vikings, I would imagine that the extra gas early could be a worthwhile tradeoff. Or am I overvaluing the gas?

I prefer mostly going bio, but when do you go liberators over vikings? I often go for MMM + tank against all races.
vikings if they have air. liberators if they dont. for example if enemy is protos with chargelots, immortals, archons or zerg with roach hydra or roach ravenger i dont think you should be building vikings. but since usually most builds have some air units vikings are pretty good. for example zerg almost always have vipers to counter tanks.
Is there a way to initiate medivac drops while they are moving other than to do "drop command" + click them?

That’s mostly because they started playing when they were kids, and kept playing so they have a decade+ of experience. Obviously the younger you are the faster your decision making is as well but I think the fact they’ve been playing since 12-14 years of age and have all that experience is the main factor. Back in the day when the game just came out, you had tons of mid 20’s early 30’s pros. ThorZaIN comes to mind as a pretty old fella as well as WhiteRa

Yes sir you answered your own question lol. Marine ghost Viking is your best bet. Always have at least a few mediavacs to support to marine/ghost

Hey Winter. I'm 41. How did you knew I just installed Starcraft 2 again ? (26Gb). Not that I plan to play enough, just the fun of building things in the game then get killed. Tried it a few hours ago, I'm just not fast enough to not bank resources and have no larva. Just getting used to mass produce drones for now.
Keep at it. I recommend Vibe's Bronze 2 GM series. That got me from unranked unable to beat easy AI to plat in like 5 months. Good luck.

ATM, playing ok is not my aim, just practising, I find SC matchup videos entertaining (probably more than playing myself), so I decided to see if I could have as much fun by actually playing. Will probably have hard times, haha, but that's part of it :D
I played a little a couple of years ago, beat the hardest AI then started the placement. I find it funny I built all the bad habits of playing AI instead of real players ranted in those videos.
Unfortunately, real life things, new job, etc, then covid (ie work harder...) no more time. I was surprised only 26Gb were required this time, it needed like 100 before.
I wonder if people out there are angry at noobs like me who are obviously not good at all, like, they crush me, and I keep doing my stuff til I can't. In videos, it is expected you GG when it's already over, thing is, I'm practising, I know it's over, but If I leave right away, I barely learn anything. Trying to recover part of the build is also part of the learning while expecting the most savage strategic breaking (AI just usually attack move and it takes ages to kill all your stuff)

Why do you build depots as spotters? I get that they increase your supply and scout but if you lose em you get supply blocked and have to build another or drop supply to compensate. Wouldn't it be cheaper to build auto turrets? Or do depot have better sight or something?
Depots have a lot of hp for the cost and are still small like the missile tower

Noticed you had a really high TPM late in this episode. What are your tips for having high TPM when you are low APM?
Anyone have any tips for spotting ghosts? I don't mean when they are cloaked; I mean when they are mixed in with a terran army. They are so small and look enough like marines that it takes me a lot of concentration to distinguish them. And I think the only way to counter them is to distinguish and focus on them (ie. feedback). As I see it, their most distinguishing feature is their death screams, which doesn't help, and their not stimming, which can help but only when everything else is stimming.
I feel like the rank distribution has gotten pretty wonky in the last few years. I run into players in plat that can be from extremely competent to literally they don't know how to build a second base

I know these videos are intended to debunk the myth that you need high APM for SC2. APM is however not the reason why I cant bother actually playing the game, it's however the fact that the game is just too fast for me in general and it stresses me out to the point where I dont have fun playing it. At one point I even started getting nightmares about getting overwhelmed in SC2, so that wasnt sustainable for my long term health. Which is a shame, because I think strategy games are fun and SC2 in particular. But since the game speed ("fastest") is tuned for spazzy 17 year olds, it's not for me so I'll rather just play good old turn-based Civ 6.

Control groups and camera locations really help me. I set them up as soon as possible, and try to use them without the mouse as much as possible, as it is faster than clicking on anything.

Everytime I build a couple reapers and hellions, my opponent makes a couple marines and a tank and drops them in my main. Like every game.

One in the mineral line and the rest on the path between the mineral lines where workers cluster when they transfer, as is often the reaction when a mineral line is threatened.
