This is great. I am angling to be less online too. I am setting the phone aside for a few hours every evening and loving the break it gives Re: seasonality, I've been really enjoying bringing whites and some more stereotypically vibrant summer shades out for winter. It adds a lot of whimsy and I find the very light shades match the winter skies. Speaking of those Uniqlo pleated pants, they are a favorite here as well. I experiment with natural dyes as a hobby, so when the light ones you wore dropped in price ($15usd!!) I grabbed a bunch to transform. So far, I have a grayish green (pomegranate and iron), faded brick red (brazilwood and iron, lavender (mimosa, cochineal and iron, and burnt orange (madder and marigold). I could practically wear these pants exclusively at this point. It gives me pause when considering splurging on other pieces.
Being more patient with my purchases sometimes I get an outfit idea and I start looking vigorously for and item and sometimes buy one just to get one and not take a bit of a deeper dive into it to see if it’s an actual piece that I can be proud to have in my wardrobe.
5:49 same here! Last year, I started buying from the women's section, and I find that many items, specifically the Uniqlo straight jeans and the JW Anderson pleated pants, fit me better.
I hear you with women's section. It I'm after boxy shorter cuts, it is ok. But sometimes the top are super wide in women's, whereas men's taper inward or straight down. Perfect example, jackets. It's definitely hit and miss
James, Happy New Year! Superb topic and recommendations. Your favorite American OG, 💯 agrees with what you said at 3:44 and the look you shared. This look is classic. Those shoes are classy, like Penny Loafers (to include the reimagined ones with Vibram soles), paired with straight fit (light blue, dark blue, black, and white jeans), worn with a tshirt (tucked in to the trousers), and/or a sweater (jumper as the British Guverner would say), or a button down Oxford shirt (tucked in to the trousers); topped off with a light jacket (denim, varsity) or a classic Navy Blazer (with gold buttons, of course) = well dressed, supremely confident, and feeling good all they long! Lastly, spot on about spending too much time online. We, who are international men of mystery, must get out of the house, engage with people who don’t think or look like us, and ensure we aren’t caught in the filter bubbles. Personally, this year, I’m going to read more hardback books. I have many “leather bound books,” so I got that going for me, which is nice 😂 Forward! Go to the light! Signed, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Marine Corps (Retired) now a well dressed, much too humble, marketing executive 🤩
hey James! Happy new year to you and your family. Lately I've really been into texture and the power it brings to a simple outfit. I'd go so far as to say it is the most difficult yet rewarding aspect to pull off in an outfit once you get the hang of the overall silhouette you wanna wear, and especially if you don't wear a lot of colors. But I'm still struggle with it sometimes, and fall into the habit where I buy too many stuff again to try to mix and match different materials (for example I feel like I need one pair of cotton black trousers that has a little bit of sheen to it, to make it pop against a knitted sweater, and one pair of matte black trousers to contrast it against a nylon shirt, when in reality I probably don't). Would love to hear your take on the importance of texture as a whole and how to apply it properly into your wardrobe. Thank you!
Crochet checked beanie is imo still valid. it is in the end only a beanie so i don‘t really see the „short-life“ of that. Maybe if so, beanies in general died a bit of. I don‘t really wear one of style (except rarely the fisherbean style) but for warmth and thus of course try to go for one, that isn‘t just a black one
was gonna say something similar, beanies can be put in a draw and kept for years. regardless of design. The beanie isn't really a fashion item its just a winter accessory like gloves and scarves
well done to you for adding a dump image insert to the video. it is an important reminder that we must not forget about our home, where we all live - our planet. I don't know English very well - I hope you understand me ;)
Same here, I have a small waist and the pants that have the right length always need to be belted. Started buying women's size couple years ago, they fit me perfectly.
Yes yes yes. Prescriptive guides on what "every guy should own" is a big pet peeve of mine. They can be great if presented as starting points to consider and temper with your personal preferences. But I think these are (unintentionally) misleading when presented as gospel, or worse, when delivered in a way that makes the viewer / reader feel inadequate or wrong for not being aligned with someone's "must have" list. I think it's much more important to take into account what suits your life (practicality), your body (comfort), and more importantly, what you just plain like (self-expression). And yes, raid the women's section. Over half of my wardrobe comes from rummaging the other side of the fence.
Excellent video. I appreciate the effort towards less but better and more versatile. The challenge for me would be being less online, especially before bed. Happy new year !
James, your sweater is great, especially with the fuller collar (not quite a "boat-neck collar, but almost). Also, that xlamulu checkerboard beanie is nice, though unpronouncable.
Metallic shoes are alive and well in Seoul. I think it’s because a. Golden Gooses have always been popular, so breaking in metallic shoes feels familiar and b. All black and/or black and white outfits are de rigeur, so silver is a good way to add a bit of interest without going colorful.
I’ve been watching your Vdo since 2015 ( James clo channel) as I can remember correct me if I’m wrong oh shit it’s 10 years now ! Happy new year man! You r my favorite ❤️
i go to absolutely zero formal events so a suit just isn't worth the money. i wear new rock boots all the time. i don't do seasonal clothes. black tshirt and black emo pants all year round
Uniqlo for 90%, some adidas/vans/converse, a Carhartt WIP detroit jacket, some levi's and we're done. Hit the gym, smash your work and delete instagram/social media. Enjoy life.
Not only taste is an aspect, body shape as well. Like I am short, my feet are proportial large.. So if I go for a skinny fit with a flat shoe, I look ridiculous. While it might look great on a taller person or for someone with more proportial feet. If I go for very loose fits on the other hand, it quickly becomes too wide because of my spaghetti arms and legs. So for me the right fit is regular fit. Thanks to this my pant falls a little over my shoe, making my feet look smaller. And a bulkier shoe, so they don't look that long. The best hoodie I bought in 2024 was in a sale at a store named Hema (Dutch store, sells like basic stuff) for €12 and it's great. I was in need for a basic black hoodie, and it worked out extremely well this way. Oh I also got a nice pair of boots in 2024, I wear them more than I expected to.
"every man needs..." and it's always something that doesn't fit the emo style i'm going for. i need spikes and emo/scene diamonds not a watch or loafers
I just wear what I want, don't care about trends. What I wear mostly: Salomon shoes + slim / loose trousers or jeans, rest is changing through the year.
Hi James, just wondering about your tip of buying from the women’s section, would you say this works for you because you have a quite slim physique compared to most other guys? You are almost my height and I can believe that you weight around 68kg.
James I appreciate your content, but to point out your distaste for those "10 things every guy needs in his wardrobe" type videos which (I agree) pander to the worst subset of fashion content creation and then to say you'll continue to make them in the future feels a little... disingenuous? Not trying to hate, just highlighting my gut reaction for your awareness. I think you have the potential to make great content, rather than content for content's sake so hope this insight spurs you on!

Pretty decent video bro… I’m 40 working class - I live right in the center of central London, and I’ve started sorting my wardrobe out.. I like that you made the point that what we wear is subjective to the person and their lifestyle… and I like the fact that your guiding people to not waste too much money.. and yeah, I actually like the the point you made about women’s clothing and that it can be blended into one some garment can. Might give you a follow next time, bro.
the chronically online take goes for almost everything when you're stuck in a bubble that almost no regular person really cares about
So true!
Yea the Reddit echo chamber
Really well put together video man and agree with everything you say. Well, apart from one thing. Me and you are always going to red carpet events 😂
Haha of course, didn’t want to brag! 😂🤣
