I’d say Personal styling has always been for a small group of people. Historically, most just wear what society tells them to. TikTok and Instagram are just the newest sources-it’s not profound or bold to say personal style is dead. Ain’t shit changed.
Like subcultures, the internet comodifies and homogenizes whatever is out of the norm. If anything, the internet exacerbates conformity and group-conforming.
Yup. I feel like the whole “personal style is dead” belief just comes from the surge of a lot more people being interested in high fashion and trend forecasting. Nothing has changed, people are just now becoming aware that personal style is not the norm.
Nah I am so proud to have found this channel. A young black man who I resonate with just chatting positively and being engaged in his passion. Love it bro! Wishing you more success in 2025 and more great content to come
Europe and Japan have LOADS of 'young black men' who are into ultra avant garde fashion and experimentation without fear. Hope 2025 sees Ye Olde Algorithm introduce them all to your feed. There's a guy on Dickimchi's channel who often pops up and he always looks fantastic-- I covet that epic Japanese leather jacket he often wears. It makes his entire outfit.
What does his skin color have anything to do with it? A bit racist to have to mention it. If you replace black man with white man you’d come off as racist so set the same standard
Tim’s, like Birkenstocks or Chuck’s are timeless. As long as they don’t change the basic aesthetic of the shoe/boot, you can wear them forever even if they’re sliver or furry or stacked. As a old fashion head (50+years old), it’s fun to shop your closet as trend cycles return. All the cool clothes you “thrift” were once “out of fashion”. If I love something and it’s unique and/or good quality, I keep it forever.
Same lol. I’m only 35 and I’ve never not worn my converses or Birkenstocks. A lot of these are micro trends and I don’t see people wearing them anyways. The only time I see people doing this is when I have to go to New York for my job and everyone looks the same and it’s really eerie.
i’m trying to retrace my memory of the phrase “-core.” i first saw “cottagecore” about a decade ago on tumblr, which at the time i assumed came from “scenecore” which i thought came from “nightcore” the music genre. i googled it just now, and “nightcore” was actually a band before it was a genre, and the “core” comes from “hardcore” music. crazy how it seemingly switched from music to fashion. the more you know
I just enjoy my own style. Sometimes preppy. Sometimes bougie. Days of just plain Levi’s and T-shirt . Everything is so expensive, in 2025 im wearing what’s in my closet, SAMBAS and all! Birkerstocks, Gucci loafers, etc are timeless. You are very enjoyable and Happy New Year!!!!
Personal style isn't dying... we are. We are getting older, this generation, your audience, the people who are active the most in this culture rn. This is just what happens to everyone as they age. We want it... easy. Welcome to the rest of your life.
Not the reason why hype reason died imo. It's mainly due to the fact that people don't want to pay these crazy resale prices that are 3-5x the retail price. People wisen up and decided not to deal with that anymore. With a price you're paying for Jordans in resale, which could be 300-600 dollars. You can buy quality footwear
10:07 I love that you commented on how underwear as outerwear puts the focus on body rather than the clothes themselves because I think it really ties into the whole thinnes is back/heroine chic returning and how the real appeal of that trend is just looking skinny instead of doing something interesting with the clothes.
I don't think personal style will ever die, but I do think that part of everyones fashion journey is to relinquish some personal style. What was once exciting and new can become stale and a burden, so we reduce our 'personal style'. And hopefully once you're over that slump you can enjoy the process as much as you once did.
You have such adorable, sincere, good energy. I can't imagine people taking your opinions the wrong way. I don't comment on videos often but I've been following for years and always look forward to your videos! Sending good vibes your way 💕
I still see the birk bostons everywhere and wear my Dior collab frequently. I don’t mind if the hype dies or if everyone wears them, they’re super comfy shoes lol
I think trends are definitely dying, because I have never seen that many fashion enthusiasts who doesn’t even care about the trends or what will be popular before, I would say one of the reasons might be how brands started to go for timeless looks, you can rock the same jacket you got now and even 5 years later and you would still look stylish. Other one might be the fact that people started to realize the rules of being able to style, you can make most of the garments look good if it’s proportions are right and if you accessorize it, add your personal touch to it. And this is definitely not a bad thing. Fashion is actually healing.
Tiktok didn't create or even popularize the whole -core stuff. I was very online and into fashion in 2015 and everything was already a -core or a -wave back then.
No it definitely did. I never heard about cores until TT and I was also online in 2015. It may not have created it but jt definitely disseminated the term to the mainstream and popularized it as one of the most popular apps in the country.
@@maverickbull1909 cores were a thing on tumblr back in the early 2010s. cleancore, lovecore, rainbowcore, angelcore, hospitalcore (inspo for late 2010s traumacore) etc.
I think this depends on how tapped into different corners of style you are. I’ve heard of cores long ago but it wasn’t used much in what I’m interested in
yes and no- i agree that a lot of niches/aesthetics had -core and -wave but in the past year with coquette being really popular I see people use "-core" as a joke almost daily, which I think reflects how popularized that word has become, I think it just reached its peak in the last 1-2 years but there definitely had a lot of popularity in certain spaces before
i think that underwear as outerwear, at least in womenswear, is gonna shift more towards things like slip skirts and bras/camis as tops once summer hits and the temperatures keep rising. super agree with what you said about how in its 2023-24 iteration, it placed focus on the body more so than the clothing, which then conflated ultra thinness as trendy during underwear as outerwear's peak. also $6,000 for embellished miu miu panties is wild..
yess i agree with the slipskirts and bra/camis bc I love when people layer things, and I definitely see people incorporating those pieces in their outfits in the summer to add more to their outfits, also they're sooo easy to thrift which I love
Dude I’m 35, and everything in my closet has come back in style. There’s a lot of stuff I sold on Poshmark that I regret because I genuinely love them but at the time wasn’t getting use out of them, but Birkenstocks and Converse..I’ve been wearing since high school the same with vans and they’ve never gone out of style. A lot of these micro trends I’ve only seen when I’ve had to visit bigger cities for work and basically all the girls were wearing the same sort of uniform and it was really really weird like to see especially when you’re dressed differently. I just want everyone to get a personal style instead of following micro trends.
As someone who lives on the upper East coast certain brands like Birkenstock, Ugg, North face, Timbs etc will never go out of style. It’s more than fashion for us we need to survive during the winter lol
I think this is actually so interesting because i watch a lot of commentary too in other topics: content creation, beauty, social media, etc. and they’re ALL pointed to the same thing. The death of “trends” as trends. The communities in all these spaces are craving authenticity. This year will be pivotable in the sense that we want to see real life people, wearing or decorating in the way they truly want. It will be trendy to be your own trend. I love it
Hype falling off and the end of the quick flip might be the saviour for the sneaker slump. With StockX selling fakes the resell market customer pool just became a whole lot smaller. It’ll be interesting to see what the changes at Nike do to its fortunes, especially with the 40th anniversary of Jordan brand next year. (Superman is still the only person allowed to wear his undies as outerwear btw)
14:18 I wouldn't say that personal style is dying, I think it's more about the increased visibility of people who are just entering the fashion world and jumping between trends. For me personally, 2024 was a breakthrough in terms of building my dream wardrobe.
I don’t think personal style is necessarily dead, it’s just that for most of us peasants, dressing up daily doesn’t make sense. Elements of my personal style will show up in my daily casual outfits, but otherwise it gets relegated to special events
I think with the underwear as outerwear trend the runway versions won’t be around much longer, but variations like the gingham boxer shorts, slip dresses, and bloomers as shorts will continue on because they’re more wearable
Slip dresses have been in/out since I was in high school. As you get older you just buy what looks good on you and what makes you feel good. That’s what I’ve learned at 35 so far. Like when people said skinny jeans were “out” . No one I knew cared. You wear what flatters you 🤷🏻♀️. Fashion gets boring if everyone looks the same imo.
I just love watching all your videos ever since I discovered your channel. I'm still searching for my own style but I feel like even if it's a "dying trend" I will continue to do so because I can have fun with clothes I would've probably never tried to wear a couple years ago. I wish you all a happy New Year!
I don’t consume much fashion content and when I do it’s mostly for fun. I didn’t know about a lot of the trends you mentioned, not even some of the off handedly mentioned ones. 😅 Also my tip for developing personal style (as an uncultured fashion casual) is to look at inspiration from various time periods and cultures, don’t focus on what’s new on social media. If you think it looked nice back then, it’ll look nice now. Mixing aesthetics, especially period and subculture clothing with something more modern or mainstream, into one outfit helps make it less costumey.
I don't think Trends can ever be "dead" they just function different than we have experienced int he past. From the beginning of time human behavior trends had been purely transferred purely through word-of-mouth and face-to-face interaction, they eventually people formed writing, and later printing, and industrial scale production, and later radio and television and now the internet/social media. The medium through which life is lived and products are advertised has been in constant change and that impact how culture feels. Trends used to be almost imperceptible to the average person but cycles and changes to social expectation have simply accelerated exponentially.
I am saying that when someone is reading this in 5 or maybe even 10 years from now, Tim's will still dominate the boots section and still be one of the biggest streetwear pieces there is.
everytime there's a 'fashion trends that are dead' type video, there's always people in the comments stating how x item is timeless, never going out of style, and they're gonna wear em anyway. like that's not the point of the video
Then what's the point? I think its better to use different type of terminology. Because to claim something is dead when an air jordan 11 Christmas release just sold out. Is kind of wrong. I would say hype culture and reselling is not as profitable as it once was. Not that it's dead. If that's the case a lot of these brands would be out of business
Like, everybody has a way of viewing this video and has their own opinion on things. That's why it's possible to upload your video with your opinion and he kept the option open to receive comments. Your way is not everyone's way.
Then why put those points in the video at all? Drew has some cogent points but there’s several that are naive. For one example, Birkenstocks - it’s literally a 200+ year old company and has been in style in the US for over 50 years. Just because people on IG or TikTok aren’t farming engagement with them anymore doesn’t mean it’s “dead” lol
Everyone is tired of tik tok and the kids there making everything a trend .. I find the fashion runways & street style videos of different cities are more inspiring I also do have a personal style that changes depending on what’s going on in my life .. on the other hand thank u for your 2024 content
You worded this perfectly. "Making a trend" Makes it artificial and done with the only purpose in mind to have something new without it having a function or meaning whatsoever.
I like the ideas. For me 2025 will be the year i tap out of fashion. I always will like dressing don't get me wrong. I buy/sell alot of second hand already, but the amount of time spent thinking and sometimes obsessing about an item or whatever is no longer sustainable for me. We are always being marketed toward using lifestyles and concepts of doing but sometimes we forget to actually go and do and be and live in the moment. My trend for 2025 is putting my clothes and fashion to work for me, turning my coveted sneakers into beaters, maybe snagging my sweater while fence hopping in Costa Rica. Type stuff im on!
one thing I definitelyhave a strong personal opinion on is that personal style is definitely not dead (imo), I feel like personal style came alive really beautifully this year. that numerous different trends and micro trends opened up opportunities for individuals to invite creative new articles of clothing and accessories into their style. I also think a lot of people dont like the numerous niche aesthetics, but I love it because I think it gives space for people with all different styles and tastes to find other people with the same taste or to just be taken more seriously in their style because now people have more of an understanding that numerous different personal styles and aesthetics can be beautiful and relevant at once, rather than only one or two mainstream styles and trends being accepted into current mainstream fashion. basically in my opinion the diversity of styles this year has been really nice to see. of course though it is contributing to overconsumption, but I think the people who pick and choose trends they actually like for them are the ones using trends correctly. id love to see you make a video on ur opinion on stuff like this!!
@ it really isn’t tho. It’s being inspired. Personal style can’t exist anymore if u look at it like that, because everything has already been done at some point
@sarahhdaniellle okay I get what you mean. The trends allow people to explore new styles and integrate them into their personal style. But a great way to test this is if they continuously change up their style every time a new trend is introduced. What healthy is building upon their personal style over the years without throwing out their clothing and replacing it with new styles every few months based on social media trends and feeling like the style they have is outdated and they won't fit in.
Personal style never dies. It’s just is not for everyone. It’s for people that truly enjoy the art of fashion. It doesn’t feel “exhausting” because it’s simply fun and expressive.
im not really that involved in the fashion world in a broader context but I love watching videos that do talk about them sometimes. seeing the energy of these videos opposed to those who kinda "trend ride" and shame things the moment they arent trendy any more is really refreshing, and I love the logic and thought process behind everything. i definitely think that an era of more timeless capsule wardrobes will be coming soon, because of how much oversaturation and overexposure we have seen in the past few years. i always see people mention the 20 years of fashion trends and how they always recycle (sry if I got the phrasing wrong but yk what I mean), and I always wonder what will happen now because of how fast the fashion trends have been moving this past year (eclectic grandpa, coastal grandmother, mermaid core, coquette, etc.) and I guess the answer is that everything will start to slow down. maybe it has something to do with just growing older and stuff but recently I haven't been joining in and participating in these trends like I used to, so I do kinda see it already happening w/ myself. all in all I appreciate the takes and thx for the great video!!!
my prediction is all of this is going to culiminate in a lot of people turning away from caring about style/fashion. fashion has never been as popular as it is right now, but i think less “invested” people seem to be slowly losing interest and are defaulting to “uniforms” for their age/subculture/whatever
sorry but ur wrong, ppl are only going to get more and more superficial. they dont have to actually care about fashion or style to care about how they present themselves, and presenting yourself has never been more important with the rise of the influencer and chronically online brain
most people following trends or wanting to be "fashionable" dont actually care about fashion from a cultural or historical perspective in the slightest
Bruh, "core" and "aesthetic" precede the pandemic by a decade or more. TikTok didn't create a new understanding of fashion trends. If anything, it dumbed it down, lol.
idk about other people's personal style condition but mine is vibin & thriving for sure! I feel only someone who tries to develop personal style through social media trends could proclaim its death. Thank you for being our genuine boy Drew and wish you even more success in 2025!
One reason I think trends are becoming less interesting is because they're too difficult to keep up with. It feels like they change every week/month. By the time you're able to purchase a specific item, that trend is "dead" and only rich people are able to bounce from one to the other. It's super out of touch and not realistic. But I do think this is where vintage comes in; you can find unique pieces at the thrift, the bins, and vintage stores that make you stand out, while also saving money. When you do this, it almost feels like you're starting your own trend(s) and discovering your own identity within fashion and culture. My hope is that people continue wearing what THEY like, not what's cool or trendy. Finding your timeless pieces that NEVER go out of style is the key, in my opinion. :) Happy New Year!
The time of trends no longer matters, so now even "dead trends" on this list will get discovered by new people and re-embraced as something new. It's like music, you can discover an album from 40 years ago or 4 years ago and it's as new to you now as if it was 4 days old. Time is irrelevant in the age of oversaturation.
Boots have always been a signature for me. Not really on purpose, I just always have a pair or two that’s constantly in my rotation. But I think lug soles or platforms are sort of on their way out in terms of boots. I find myself going for a much lower profile boot and I love the boxer boot trend although I don’t really have a practical application for them so I don’t own them. I also see pants moving towards a much more classic tailored/straight cut and there’s just no room for a bulky boot with them. Pants and shoes always have like a symbiosis in terms of silhouette imo
I feel like there isn't consensus around what "Personal Style" even is, in my eyes literally everyone is always doing personal style. The act of wearing clothes in itself is a choice no matter the level of intention or consideration. People buy things that they want to wear or find useful/functional, and what you wear (no matter how loud or mundane) is inherently expressing something about each person. I think people have been misguided into the thinking that "Personal Style" has to be some totally "original" "anti-trend" way of dressing yourself but that's utterly ridiculous because everyone is influenced and inspired by how they live and what the see around themselves and that always impacts how a person will get dressed each day. "Personal Style" has never been dead or alive or whatever. "Personal Style" just is.
I’m at the point of being tired of trends and where what I like. I go through cycles but if I can’t potentially wear it everyday, or even for multiple specific events, I’m not going to buy it.
Birks will forever be in my wardrobe same with gorpcorp. I hike and travel a lot so they've been part of the wardrobe way before the hype. Plus they're functional and comfy
Trends: Another element that is lurking at the edge of your thoughts is "how our style shifts with maturity". That maturity could be due to shifts in cultural exposure, financial insecurities/abundance and fashion/style awareness. These things greatly influence what we covet and buy. With social mefia fast-tracking "shifts", trend lines are blurred if not obliterated. Luxury: The more influencers point out or expose "quiet" luxury, the louder it becomes. So, to the extent that luxury equals a degree of exclusiveness, the "quiet" crowd will be forced to shift to smaller brands. It'll be interesting to see what "new" money chases to set itself apart from the masses. 2025: Love your content. Another done in 2024 could be "apologizing for expressing your opinion". Your commentary is thoughtful and completely devoid of personal attack. We are literally here for your opinion. I hope 2025 encourages you to post without worry. Anyone taking offense should be ignored.
Idk if personal style is dying or if people are shifting to downsized wardrobes because of the overwhelming nature of so many “cores/aesthetics” in combo with a lot of overconsumption
As long as Black Americans are still defining American culture, personal style will never end. There’s a history as it pertains to Black Americans and the importance of personal style, but that’s a different conversation…
the american empire is sort of the worlds beacon of "individualism" and its obvious decline i think has a lot to do with people having less of a desire to express themselves; i think a lot of people aren't aware of this but culture is downstream from economic decline so people might just be feeling that without knowing what it is exactly
I feel like the best sneakers are the classic ones made in the ‘70s-‘90s. (A few examples: Jordan 1, Samba, Superstar, Stan Smith, Air Max 1, 90, Dunk, Air Force, Gazelle, etc and Chucks) or regular runner silhouettes like NB or Asics. What I’m trying to say is I think we’ve reached peak sneaker aesthetics long ago and personally wouldn’t be surprised at a sneaker slump for 2025. And the whole “stealth wealth” loafer, derby/oxford is just people maturing their style. No doubt social media and overexposure to everything burns out looks and trends. I’m glad it’s moving towards to the individual now to decide what they like to wear instead of algorithms.
Personal styling is the only fashion that matters. Pick an aesthetic and make it your own. Build on elevated basics and add vintage and unique items no one else has. That will transcend all trends.
Im hoping the sneaker slump causes sneaker culture to turn back towards being more underground. go back to a time where the taste wasn’t dictated by hype but dope colorways and exciting collabs. Also, the lack of hype has made a ton of shoes way more available to cop.
Kanye influence on fashion is under appreciated. He was the culture rather people want to believe it or not. Fashion culture has been under represented since his fallback from the mainstream
Personal style is alive and kicking. Those who have personal style are still personally stylish. Those who were purely following trends are still following trends. Those who didn't care regardless still don't care. I think some people who felt maximalism made them unique are just tired now. And those who kept to minimalism because it made them feel artful and profound are also tired. The people who actually believed in those things as opposed to just feeling like they should have, are on their own journeys. Those journeys do not coincide with the whims of pop culture or the internet, so it doesn't matter. Consumerism didn't just happen yesterday. I also feel some people were always 'logically aware' that trends are driven by brands and capitalism etc etc, but they only just kind of 'got it', like a realisation or waking up from zoning out. Finally internalising it. Now they think that "it's all just trends, actually!" is somehow a revolutionary idea.
My issue with capsule wardrobes is that all these creators make it so bland. A capsule doesn’t have to be bland and doesn’t have to be all beige. It’s entirely possible to create a capsule that is exiting and personal.
There's a book I'm really fond of called Pattern Recognition, and the style of the main character has been hugely influential for my style all of 2024 and going into 2025. It sort of goes with the theme of fashion being exhausting and leading to the birth of capsule wardrobes: "What people take for relentless minimalism is a side effect of too much exposure to the reactor-cores of fashion. This has resulted in a remorseless paring-down of what she can and will wear. She is, literally, allergic to fashion. She can only tolerate things that could have been worn, to a general lack of comment, during any year between 1945 and 2000. She’s a design-free zone, a one-woman school of anti whose very austerity periodically threatens to spawn its own cult.” So basically that means wearing time-honored and timeless pieces like all-cotton Levi's 501s, reliable and largely unbranded boots, blank tee shirts that feel good and fit well, etc. I feel so much better with these constraints, and I have to imagine many others do as well.
Im from MN, birkenstocks have and will always be in style here. I remember when my homies from Chicago would come to MN. They would clown us for wearing "Jesus sandals." That was 15 years ago. I didn't even know this was a fashion "trend."
Also I disagree on “2025 will be the end of trends” there will always be trends. But to say that all the previous years were defined by a single moment is completely false. Even when you look back at different decades ppl all had different styles yes there was certain things pushed mainstream wise but there have always been people who dress differently or different types of fashion esp amongst different ethnic groups.
13:41 as a fan of Mina I feel like a piece that gets lost in her video being emblematic of “the death of personal style“ is how for her very eccentric fashion helped mask certain insecurities and awkwardness because it was often the first and only thing people saw when perceiving her. When you grow more confident/mature in yourself, it’s natural to want to shed the masks. Obviously if it’s part of your authenticity for sure go for it
growing up with a brand like Birkenstock was funny to see as a trend but I'm never going to stop wearing my Boston's. Bleached brows come and go so that's understandable. I don't see big boots going out of style. The Balenciaga ugh boot is going crazy still. the Rick shearling boots still popular. I don't see it going anywhere any time soon
The only time underwear as outerwear was seen in the general public IMO was in clean girl aesthetic, everyone was wearing blue and white striped boxers as shorts and blue and white striped pajama pants as pants in elevated accessorized outfits
The need to put labels on trends is such a humanistic aspect that I doubt will truly die. But the less we put these labels on things, the more free we can be to express ourselves. Don’t need to call it anything! Nothing truly dies unless you decide to keep it alive. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Dress on!
I’d say Personal styling has always been for a small group of people. Historically, most just wear what society tells them to. TikTok and Instagram are just the newest sources-it’s not profound or bold to say personal style is dead. Ain’t shit changed.

yup
Fashion doesn’t die, it just cycles
Those big red boots were never cool. Got people walking around cosplaying Astro Boy and thinking they’ll get laid.
It was a gimmick
MSCHF and Balenciaga are literally social experiments. Somebody somewhere is laughing at these bozos who fall for it in front of a pile of money

-core as fashion language predates TikTok by a significant margin. Using it to describe genres predates even Tumblr

My dog died In 2024
Sorry to hear that 😢
My Grandma died :(
is this also a new fashion core for next year.....
I just lost my dawgggg
And my brother taught me how to chase the bag

I kinda hate how homogonized even some of the most extreme fashion genres have become

seriously, until wages go up, most of us will be ignoring the hype (because we have to)
Underwear aa outerwear is nasty
UaaO gotta go fasho
10:07 I love that you commented on how underwear as outerwear puts the focus on body rather than the clothes themselves because I think it really ties into the whole thinnes is back/heroine chic returning and how the real appeal of that trend is just looking skinny instead of doing something interesting with the clothes.
no outfit is going to make you look or feel as good as having a fit body
I don't think personal style will ever die, but I do think that part of everyones fashion journey is to relinquish some personal style. What was once exciting and new can become stale and a burden, so we reduce our 'personal style'. And hopefully once you're over that slump you can enjoy the process as much as you once did.
You have such adorable, sincere, good energy. I can't imagine people taking your opinions the wrong way. I don't comment on videos often but I've been following for years and always look forward to your videos! Sending good vibes your way 💕
Personal styles isn’t dying per se, I think it’s simple- those who have it will continue, those who do not, will move on.
exactly what i said but 2 days before me and much more concise lmao
I still see the birk bostons everywhere and wear my Dior collab frequently. I don’t mind if the hype dies or if everyone wears them, they’re super comfy shoes lol
My lil bro just got his first pair
Exactly. They are not going anywhere imo. Imagine you have some grocery errands-you can easily wear em instead of wearing shoes
OMG 2015 has been 10 years ago....
Timbs are timeless.
New Yorkers will still be wearing Timbs in 3030 if the city is underwater.
I’ve heard of cores long ago but it wasn’t used much in what I’m interested in
yes and no- i agree that a lot of niches/aesthetics had -core and -wave but in the past year with coquette being really popular I see people use "-core" as a joke almost daily, which I think reflects how popularized that word has become, I think it just reached its peak in the last 1-2 years but there definitely had a lot of popularity in certain spaces before
Never heard everyone using “core” back then, and im from California
i think that underwear as outerwear, at least in womenswear, is gonna shift more towards things like slip skirts and bras/camis as tops once summer hits and the temperatures keep rising. super agree with what you said about how in its 2023-24 iteration, it placed focus on the body more so than the clothing, which then conflated ultra thinness as trendy during underwear as outerwear's peak.
also $6,000 for embellished miu miu panties is wild..
yess i agree with the slipskirts and bra/camis bc I love when people layer things, and I definitely see people incorporating those pieces in their outfits in the summer to add more to their outfits, also they're sooo easy to thrift which I love
I love it
Timberland is forever.

I wouldn't say that personal style is dying, I think it's more about the increased visibility of people who are just entering the fashion world and jumping between trends.
Thanks for everything in 2024 stay yall safe, thanks for the good content!

Also my tip for developing personal style (as an uncultured fashion casual) is to look at inspiration from various time periods and cultures, don’t focus on what’s new on social media. If you think it looked nice back then, it’ll look nice now. Mixing aesthetics, especially period and subculture clothing with something more modern or mainstream, into one outfit helps make it less costumey.
I think the Boston b’s are classic at this point
I think that the Uggs --specifically the platform Uggs, for women, have taken over the Birks.
Also, trends ain't ever dying, there's too many purely consuming-driven people out there for it to be so.
I find the fashion runways & street style videos of different cities are more inspiring
I also do have a personal style that changes depending on what’s going on in my life ..
on the other hand thank u for your 2024 content
You worded this perfectly. "Making a trend" Makes it artificial and done with the only purpose in mind to have something new without it having a function or meaning whatsoever.
The term core didn’t originate in TikTok. We’ve been saying core in NYC since 2013
The Marines have you beat
That's not "personal" style. That's just copying others snd trends.
@ exactly that’s my thoughts too! I just worded it poorly I guess:)
@@zachariah7114 What people wear depends on their location, body type and what's available to them.
Bruh, "core" and "aesthetic" precede the pandemic by a decade or more. TikTok didn't create a new understanding of fashion trends. If anything, it dumbed it down, lol.
tysm for this
Combining aesthetics has always been my go to!
idk about other people's personal style condition but mine is vibin & thriving for sure!
Happy New Year!
Wear what you want has always been it. Following trends is for followers
Jemi's video on personal style vs persona style is really great and i really agree with her perspective. She is amazingly well researched
First time I watched your contents is around 2023, wow, time flies really fast
I wouldn’t say personal style is dead, but creating a wardrobe around an aesthetic you like and kind of sticking to that is coming back
I love your content honestly
11:10 Thank GAWD!!! I’ve been a sneaker collector since 2005. And it’s been rough since 2017ish.
Also the resell price are just pure evil and giving greedy.
I’m at the point of being tired of trends and where what I like. I go through cycles but if I can’t potentially wear it everyday, or even for multiple specific events, I’m not going to buy it.
personal style is still there except for the younger generation feel like they rely too heavily on tiktok, ig, trends
Birks will forever be in my wardrobe same with gorpcorp. I hike and travel a lot so they've been part of the wardrobe way before the hype. Plus they're functional and comfy
11:28 aw cool! that’s one of my fav vintage shops i frequent
What fleece are you wearing Drew?
Idk if personal style is dying or if people are shifting to downsized wardrobes because of the overwhelming nature of so many “cores/aesthetics” in combo with a lot of overconsumption
Most people aren't downsizing their wardrobes tho. Quite the opposite.
As long as Black Americans are still defining American culture, personal style will never end. There’s a history as it pertains to Black Americans and the importance of personal style, but that’s a different conversation…
Up with afros; down with uncanny valley man-made barber cuts
the american empire is sort of the worlds beacon of "individualism" and its obvious decline i think has a lot to do with people having less of a desire to express themselves; i think a lot of people aren't aware of this but culture is downstream from economic decline so people might just be feeling that without knowing what it is exactly
ppl are hurting. if their financial situations improve, so will their wardrobes.
How is the cottle fleece jacket? I am thinking of picking up the one you are wearing, and seeing it on video makes it look that much more appealing
Lmao I loved the little word plays !! Such a good video to end the year on :)
Personal styling is the only fashion that matters. Pick an aesthetic and make it your own. Build on elevated basics and add vintage and unique items no one else has. That will transcend all trends.
dude, if the Hood aint rocking it ,it aint rocking
Awesome end to 2024! Excited to see your breakdown about personal style being "dead"
Fashion culture has been under represented since his fallback from the mainstream
never thought i'd really see sneaker hype has just rlly hasn't been a big part of fashion/ trend anymore it used to be so big
Listen those birken Boston will always live on since I’m from a Caribbean household 😂
Fair but beige is the most timeless and classiest color palette
Personal styling is s def not done! Especially at Camp Flog Gnaw there were so many different & unique personal styles a saw there this year! 😍🤩
Waiting for that new drew joiner intro rhyme in 2025, intrigued to see what it’ll be
1. ur gorgeous 2. ur a great speaker 3.hope ur right 🤞Happy 2025!♥
I think it would be highly interesting to see a series or video analyzing style icons and how their fashion evolved over years or even decades.
Amazing content with great music and editing! Really happy I subscribed
Where is that fleece he’s wearing from? I love it
Fashion trends don’t ever truly die. Their publicity does.
This is such a good breakdown!
There's a book I'm really fond of called Pattern Recognition, and the style of the main character has been hugely influential for my style all of 2024 and going into 2025. It sort of goes with the theme of fashion being exhausting and leading to the birth of capsule wardrobes:
"What people take for relentless minimalism is a side effect of too much exposure to the reactor-cores of fashion. This has resulted in a remorseless paring-down of what she can and will wear. She is, literally, allergic to fashion. She can only tolerate things that could have been worn, to a general lack of comment, during any year between 1945 and 2000. She’s a design-free zone, a one-woman school of anti whose very austerity periodically threatens to spawn its own cult.”
So basically that means wearing time-honored and timeless pieces like all-cotton Levi's 501s, reliable and largely unbranded boots, blank tee shirts that feel good and fit well, etc. I feel so much better with these constraints, and I have to imagine many others do as well.
I told my kid “if your biggest priority in life is building a quiet computer key board, you must be doing ok in life”. This is the same thing.
I think we’ll continue to see fashion push away from overt displays of wealth… more utilitarian looks.
Construction worker-core when? Not plain ole workwear, I mean literal fluorescent orange vests to go clubbing.
Halfway through the video and I’ve said “thank god” for all of these so far 😂
Im from MN, birkenstocks have and will always be in style here. I remember when my homies from Chicago would come to MN. They would clown us for wearing "Jesus sandals." That was 15 years ago. I didn't even know this was a fashion "trend."
Also I disagree on “2025 will be the end of trends” there will always be trends. But to say that all the previous years were defined by a single moment is completely false. Even when you look back at different decades ppl all had different styles yes there was certain things pushed mainstream wise but there have always been people who dress differently or different types of fashion esp amongst different ethnic groups.
Nice vid Drew. Can I ask where your jacket from? looks super cozy!
I loved this analysis :)
Yo! Loved the thought-starters in this one. Great food for thought. Totally unrelated, what’s the jacket you’ve got on?
nice video !!! thank you
13:41 as a fan of Mina I feel like a piece that gets lost in her video being emblematic of “the death of personal style“ is how for her very eccentric fashion helped mask certain insecurities and awkwardness because it was often the first and only thing people saw when perceiving her.
Dress on!
