Learning languages can be rewarding but takes time and effort. Join me as I delve into the intricacies of language learning from the unique perspective of someone who has self-studied 47 languages and traveled to 99 countries over 50 years. This video isn’t just about the mechanics of language acquisition; it's a deep dive into the passion for connecting with diverse cultures and people, fueled by my experiences teaching Cross-cultural Management in Japan, China, and Thailand. I'll discuss the challenges of self-motivation and discipline, even for someone as dedicated as myself, and how sometimes we can fall short of our language goals, as I did with German.
I'll share my personal journey with the German language, which began at the Goethe Institute in Colombia and was largely self-taught through countless hours with a Linguaphone set. Despite previous setbacks and a tendency to postpone my language learning goals, I've discovered the unexpected benefits of online group classes. Doing this with my Latin and Ancient Greek before moving on with modern, natively-spoken languages. I already have a foundation in Modern Greek, as well as all the major Romance languages save for Romanian, and know a few words and phrases in several other languages, all of which I plan to pick up again progressively after I've attained certain fluency in my beloved classical languages.

How nice that you came to Vienna using your German. In case you want to continue studying it, the courses of the SPRACHENZENTRUM DER UNI WIEN (also online; search the internet using these words) are recommended. At the end of their courses, you will receive a EU-wide recognized report (B1, B2, C1, C2), not a Mickey Mouse paper. In order to listen to spoken German you could listen to/watch orf tv (also online), the News is at 19:30 summertime/Central European Time. All of this is also available in Japan. The Australian Greek parents' failed to understand that Australia is a monolingual English dominated nation and shares the misfortune of most Anglophone nations, despite ubiquitous immigrant and indigenous minority language speakers. All minority groups are expected to adhere to an English curriculum, and there is hardly any incentive to maintain heritage languages for employment. This leads to the children of immigrants rapidly suffering fluency attrition, not unique to any particular ethnic group. The children play with friends and interact with the world around them in English, leading to a loss of importance in learning any other language.
yea i think the kids must have viewed Greek culture as boring. and he said it happened in 2006 so UA-cam only just got invented so you couldn't just watch Greek movies or tv shows or listen to greek music .it was not on tv in Australia only in Greece and Cyprus .these days while not many foreigners care about Greek culture Japanese Korean and even Turkish stuff got much more popular world wide than in 2006.
