Thank you. I was thinking of buying the iPhone 12 pro because of the Lidar Sensor to use it for 3d Scan. Your test convinced me, the iPhone 12 mini is enough for me :-)
You can buy a LiDAR for a 35mm camera which cost $350 and sits in the flash shoe, it’s about the size of a matchbox, I don’t know how it compares to the iPhone. Would need post processing as I don’t think the camera would have the brains for it. Be interesting if camera makers run with LiDAR or is it too niche like FLAR?
Is there any point to maybe building a light box with an acrylic base on a "lazy susan" rotating the piece and lighting it from various angles as to produce a better scan?
Probably both. The lidar sensor resolution is pretty low. But software can compensate a lot with overlaying multiple images and utilizing the gyro sensor. It's actually already doing that but I believe this can be improved. What cannot be changed is the minimum distance, which is another reason why it's not able to scan smaller things though.
from first few second , I know it is still totally unsable for 3D printing. the mesh not accurate. missing detail. still a good news for 3D modeler Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video, maybe you used it to scan people, I was thinking of buying an iPad Pro instead of a scanner for the price but what you get in the end with the help of the applications (meshing) can be useful to scan arms of people to customize prosthetics? I would really appreciate your answer.
if might work to people scanning. I would actually rather use the face-id sensor on the front, it seems more accurate: ua-cam.com/video/PJjWxTi2yDo/v-deo.html. Also consider either using a self-printed mirror adapter or this one, which I also ordered for myself: www.kickstarter.com/projects/scanmira/scanmira-a-better-way-to-3d-scan-with-your-iphone-ipad-pro?lang=de
Take this with a grain of salt. But I think buying a scanner will produce higher resolution scans but lower quality texture. IPhone is like the reverse higher quality textures but lower quality details.

Actually every iPhone since X has had a lidar scanner. That is for face unlock...in fact the front facing lidar camera is higher resolution than the rear camera which is more for rooms etc...
I regret buying my Pixel 6, I wish I bought the iPhone instead for its lidar scanner. Does anyone know a dedicated scanner that I can buy that will work with my Pixel 6?
iPhone 12 and iPad Pro have the back side LIDAR Sensor. Check out my newer video how to use the front facing sensor (face-Id) that is there since iPhone X. ua-cam.com/video/PJjWxTi2yDo/v-deo.html
While the lion and your car scans were not as high-quality as I could imagine a proper for the photogrammetric one would be even with the same iPhone, the rooms scale is actually pretty good for the quickness and getting the dimensions and textures correctly.
We bought 2 iPhone 12 Pro Max and they both have awful antenna receptions and to return them and go back to my iPhone 11 Pro Max way better for rural areas
I'm not an Apple Guy but I was sure hoping for more. The Real Problem is a platform where you can real time see errors in the scan so you can real time pain and repaint those errors until they are gone. You can't do that with photos since they are not real time. The expensive 3D scanners all have that ability so when you are done, you have a virtually error free surface w/o holes. The cost of these "expensive" scanners has already dropped an Order of Magnitude so the difference with a high end cell phone is closing quickly. maybe the iPhone 15 will achieve this?
Omg thank you so much for this video! Thank GOD I found this video accidentally! I was planning to buy iphone 12 pro because of the LiDAR sensor! I am not a rich person and how lucky I am that I save my money from buying useless thing because of this video! A big big big thank you!!!!
I would gladly trade half the speed for double the resolution, at least for nearby objects. I doubt Apple is interested in making a 3d scanning phone, they just want a phone with good enough lidar to accurately place objects in AR space.
This is actually pretty disappointing. I'm an iPhone user in general, but upgraded specifically for the lidar sensor to use it for better scans than just using camera based iphone apps and it looks the software just isn't there to make anything great with it.
Of course, the whole point of this is so developers like me will be able to make apps for the Apple AR glasses on day one with no problems. That’s what is actually exciting.
