YES! Thank you!! I am a civil licensed professional engineer and I have degree in landscape architecture so I am seriously evaluating the iPhones Pro and iPad LiDAR combined with SiteScape is excellent for us.
As a surveyor in training, I've found these videos very interesting. Also, you've convinced me to switch to a iPhone 14 Pro, simply because of its lidar camera.
i have the iphone 10 pro and it has lidar and its helped me in areas unreachable by measurement tools and already preordered the iphone 14 pro just for the reason it has a better lidar lol
I've done validation testing using the iPhone LIDAR and compared it to terrestrial LIDAR scans. The iPhone point cloud had a scaling error of 10.06 inches over 61 survey feet. Not exactly spectacular real-world results. Your test may have been close on single points, but I am 2/2 on gross error that came from an iPhone when compared to a terrestrial LIDAR scanner.
Rami, Great presentation for the LiDAR component however you should consider testing the performance and accuracy with a dataset that is non-linear. Note that your set up along the path was quasi-linear in fashion and a better comparison would be to have a rectangular or polygonal setup so the variations can be better illustrated. Not a land surveyor here but I do teach LiDAR and photogrammetry as PDH courses. Reach out to discuss more. BTW...your Leica set up is sweet!
Hello Mark, I was gonna make the same comment, however I think that Iphone's lidar, and up to this moment, is not built to do surveying on a large scale, it could be a good complement, when used right, that said I would like to see results on a rectangular or polygonal setup :D
Hi Mark - can i pick your brains? Im looking to deploy an Apple ecosystem for working projects. The effortlessness of the Iphone to Ipad has been a joy. Having deciding to take advantage of on site surveys using LiDAR, what apps would you suggest? Rami showed off 3D scanner app, i also have 2 other apps that i have downloaded (Polycam and scaniverse) and wonder which seems the better choice that you have come across (i dont really want to do the monthly subscription, i'd rather do a 1-off purchase if it needs to be paid for). I'm implementing LiDAR on structural surveying and also drainage and use Revit which can import point clouds - just wondering of a good work flow for both structural reporting and also 3D modelling data interrogation - TIA. :)
I believe he did a similar test with iphone 13 pro and the difference was around 10cm, so it looks like it has been improved, but maybe Rami can confirm..
One of my favourite channels ❤ Be nice to see it used with RTK, gimbal, Matterport Axis vs iPhone 12/13. If you’re looking for ideas, a comparison of LiDAR apps for accuracy, etc., would be fab. Thanks for the continuing excellent & informative content 👏👍
Thanks for your exelent videos, giving us detailed insight into the art of surveying. Can you explain how the plumbness of the staff/pole is managed. Does the controller for the total station know the angle of the staff or do you have to manually try to keep plumbness as the prisim is captured. At 6 foot i think even the smallest movement could account for the 20mm error you found.
For those viewers interested in an awnser to this question, Rami probbably already had an awnser in the can when I posted the original question (what an awesome Channel) ua-cam.com/video/FQ3J9tsVdH0/v-deo.html
Hi Rami, much respect for the way you do this, I'm wondering if there are any major changes and improvements on the Iphone 14 pro compared to the Iphone 13 pro regarding the lidar sensor?
I have done several tests with scaniverse, 3d scanner app, pix4dcatch, trnio, point precise, OpalAi, polycam and several etc, and the one with the best results (focused on the topography and construction part) has been Dot3D, it is paid but it allows you to try it for 7 days, it is the most professional of all and with the most accurate cloud of points in terms of the accumulated error in the distance, it is very important to use the targets to close the loops and reduce the error.
Great video, inspired us to make an iPhone Pro purchase and do some testing. However, the 2" targets (same brand/type) could not be differentiated from background (however we tweaked the scalar display parameters) and the 4.5" round was just a slight improvement. Would appreciate any suggestions for better targets.
Could you tear apart the iPhone and create a LiDAR endoscope? Wondering for non-invasive archeology. Today Egypt announced they discovered a new hallway in the Great Pyramid and used an endoscope to capture video. LiDAR and photo geometry would be more useful.
Hello rami i am a PHd candidate forester. my field of work is riparian zones and i will try to use iphone 14pro to lidar scan the rivers bench , then i will fly a mavic 2 pro to create an orthomosaic map and a 3d model, i think the best way for 3d its by taking 3 maps at 45° , -45° ,90° then combine them , i had some problems with 3d mapping because of the nature of the trees structure, any idea hot to fix it? at first i think to fly higher , i dont know, and something else, in iphone 14 pro a gyroscope will help or give us worst results. thank you for your work!
Would love to see how accurate the iPhone point cloud data is without aligning the points. Meaning recording a georeferenced point cloud directly out of the iPhone to get topographic survey data for an example site and then compare that to GNSS survey data.
Seems the tech on phones is a while off yet until these are capable of sub 5mm accuracy, with regards to the errors on the distance between the ground control points.. could not rely on the lidar data for the accuracy required for site survey control points.
I would appreciate it if you could do a comparison test with the iPhone LiDAR and the Leica 3D scanner to compare internal room scans and what the tolerance would be for the iPhone when measuring deflections of concrete ceiling soffits. The Leica 3D scanner is capable of 2mm tolerances and if using the iPhone LiDAR and utilizing your data it would appear that you would get similar tolerances across a room span of say 5.1m. Just not sure how you would use the iPhone data set to measure ceiling deflections?
Great video, with tolerances of +3mm this is a great result for the iPhone LiDAR. I must say I struggle to see the centre of the targets in the point cloud, if you used larger size targets would that make it easier to find the centres in the cloud images? I've used the S Scanner App and found that it is not good for large projects. Scanning around large external buildings it would just crash after one elevation. I've been using Polycam which has been great. It processes the captured data in about a minute and can convert it to all industry CAD extension files. I found it economical to just purchase the full APP on an individual month when I intend to use the LiDAR then convert the finished scan into e.g. AutoCAD format and save it to the computer. The file is then saved and you don't need the Polycam APP anymore.
"I must say I struggle to see the centre of the targets in the pointcloud..." me too. Perhaps it had been better to use round targets with a real centre instead.
Thanks, Rami. I’ll get that card for my desktop. But what are your laptop specs for good performance with civil 3D surfaces and point clouds? You said the X1 Yoga was good for point clouds and cloud compare; can it manage c3D surfaces and grading tasks? A suggestion: it would be most helpful if you listed your laptop/desktop hardware in the VIDs along with the survey equipment and software. All you do is most informative and a great help to many of us - thank you!
Hey Rami, thanks for all the amazing videos. Do you know what would be the best way to project total station points in iphone 3d scans? I'm scanning a structure and later want to add total station points into the iPhone generated 3d scans. Thanks!
Nice video🎉. As you mentioned before, Perhaps using a DJI gyro stabilizer could improve the results. How about the waveform and intensity data of iPhone lidar? Is there any study?
hi rami , please show how fast to survey with the new AP20 (autopole) from leica , how awsome is this innovation to survey without carring about plummet
Very informative video. Thank you. I would like to know if the LIDAR point clouds can also be exported in the LAS file format for CloudCompare. Thanks again.
Do you know why your iPhone 13 Pro LiDAR vs Total Station level has a major difference because you align the point cloud with the Total Station point and during aligning your point cloud coordinates is ok as per Total Station point but the z value tilted that's why z value sown major difference (i know the solution) the solution is don't alight just pick anyone point cloud point and place on total station point then rotate with the second reference point
hi rami, glad to found your channel. could you share your thought/experience regarding PC spec for handling point cloud processing and BIM? I'm looking for PC spec handling 15-20 GB point cloud per file size. thanks in advance

thanks, very interesting as usual for your contents. is the lidar and sensors of iphone14 better than the lidar of iphone 12/13 ? I have seen any side-by-side accuracy comparison

@Rami Tamim I've seen you brother testing iphone on a foot path strips. Can you use it to do topo survey of a wide area like a farm of say 2 or 5 Acres?
