*Update:* I have tested the LiDAR sensor with the normal Portrait Mode, and can confirm that it does not affect the accuracy of depth in that mode. Apple could in theory push an update that will make the cameras take advantage of LiDAR more often, but as of right now, it unfortunately does not. The only time the LiDAR sensor is used in the camera app is for Portrait Mode photos when used in combination with Night Mode.
Pretty sure that it’s ment for 3D games
Your height?
Imagine crowdsourcing lidar scans of the entire world. We could build a game like GTA mixed with flight simulator 2020.
Sony have this years ago. Experia xz premium.
@@deliverydiary7703, is it? I have Xperia xz premium but there isn't any LiDar app in it.
The video didn’t include photogrammetry, i.e. scanning objects into digital 3D-meshes, which is much improved with the help of a lidar. This has been the killer lidar feature for myself.
@@SammySlamma92 the applications that use the lidar still rely heavily on photogrammerty so I think that's what they were getting at...
I think for 3D artists, this phone is so useful in many ways.. Like 3D scanning or facial scan. I think ill buy one soon..

But Mark, I'll be frank that your videos are so neaaaaaaaat and simple to digest that it got me stuck to the chair till the end of the video and I subscribed you without even browsing your channel.
This is the first video I've watched from you, and I've become a fan. Keep up the good work, Mark.

The cat at 1:47 is a MONSTER! What kind of cat is that? I want one.
I'm guessing it's a shaved Maine Coon?
Lmao get the shop lifters with a whole new strategy, a big ass cat🤣🤣
Also really didn't expect to see you here!
maine coon whose had a haircut
Shaved cat?? Does the cat have some kind of weird health issues?? Cats aren’t generally meant to be shave
The measuring ability of lidar left me in awe.
I'm quite impressed with the feature set that Apple comes out to take advantage of the LIDAR, especially intrigued by the measurement app. As a Galaxy user, I low-key would want something similar to that as I can see myself using it. Many phones have same extra depth sensor on the back but doing nothing, seems wasted to me. So, kudos Apple 👍🏼
there is an implementation of it. go to the camera app, swipe all the way to more, go to bixby vision, then go to "3d scanner"
@@djenson it’s different. LiDar and ToF are different. But the Samsung one is actually decent though
Love the title 😉. Those are some pretty cool features!
Why is that a good title
@@ilovedagreenday it’s hot
Why did you wink and what’s so great about the title
I know how good is the title!
Looks like a dream for Architects and Interior Designers
Yes that is the point since iPad Pro and not that cool but not useful at all 120hz screen
for architects? yah... if you want 1cm gaps in your walls 😄

Please make a lava lamp review
bruh
Yes please do it!
Bruh... how many times are you gonna say that?
Where the hell is lava lamp? Tell me i will do a review
Damn I scrolled too much down and got to a comment from the 90’s
Finally a video with some more depth. Learned a few things. Thanks for the original content. :-)
More depth...I see what you did there!
@@MarkSpurrell Lol haha
And here I was thinking I could map things in 3D like when they used LiDAR to map underneath the plants in the Amazon rainforest 🙃
1:45 lol at the cat 😂😂😂
I quite appreciate how you were thoughtful enough not to make an unboxing/overview video as that (especially being late) wouldn't appeal a lot. (Well I'd watch it just coz you're cool though lol). This is really original content and so well done!
"Try doing that in 3 Seconds" lol
Another reviewer said the LIDAR isn’t used in portrait mode to measure depth because it doesn’t have as many points as the face ID camera. It’s only used to autofocus at night, and nothing else when it comes to the camera.
My husband got me iPhone 12 pro. I'm loving it!! Your video is awesome!!!
If you don't mind me asking are you married to westerner?
Great vid quality, and straight to the point.
Honestly surprised how you have less than 100K, you have my sub! Keep it up :D
Your reviews are outstanding. No BS. Straight to the point.
As someone who has always been on Android, I have to say 12 Pro is looking very tempting because of the better video quality and the squared off premium design. However, Samsung's next Fold 3 phone is shaping up to be very impressive and I think Apple should consider competing in this foldable space before Samsung takes too much of a lead. Having a tablet-sized display that fits in your pocket is going to become very popular quickly.
If you believe any of the leakers, it sounds like they're working on one!
So, here we are, two years later: iPhone & iPad still absolutely popular, nothing foldable ;-)
@Land Wirtschaft Yeah I actually bought the Galaxy Fold 4 recently and I would never want to go back to a regular phone. It's still expensive but with time maybe we'll get more variations. I still think Apple will have to launch a foldable eventually. It's just too good to ignore.
Another banger, keep it up man!
My friend's iPad Air 4 works completely fine on AR even without the LiDAR sensor. It’s cool that this technology is here, but I don’t exactly see a reason as to why it's necessary on a phone or a tablet? Better accuracy of course, but that's it?
Dat other robot was whoopin yo robot ahhh 😂
I'm using airborne LiDAR to measure forest stand characteristics for forest inventory- had no clue the technology had advanced so far that its now on phones :O
Everyone : let's put a 2mp sensor.
Apple : let's put a useful LiDAR sensor.
How did you use Lidar? I can't see that on my camera or that tool, where should i go? Although I have 13 pro max
I got the iPhone 13 pro max in white 128gb and did an unboxing video on my channel! Absolutely love this phone. I also did a Spigen clear glitter case unboxing and try on, this is a great case if anyone is wanting a clear but slimming case for the 13 pro max. Loveeee this phone!!!
You have an innate ability to explain technical concepts, yet express them in a way even an old codger like me can understand! Kudos! ;)
Apple - “we have revolutionised charging bricks this year. This is our new charging brink code name - J.O.H.N. C.E.N.A”
UCHIHA MADARA thanks for noticing...hehe
excellent explanation of lidar. And I LOVE the cat. More cat in your videos, please. in fact every video should feature the cat.
Don’t forget you need a full afternoon to assemble the ikea furniture.
I have a 12 Pro and enjoy it and the LIDAR is neat and hopefully will get more useful in the future. Looking at the point density as you were shining on the table that is just too sparse for many applications as far as accuracy goes but of course this is not a BIGBOY scanner.
I'm pretty sure the lidar isn't the 1st thing that people think when they are trying to choose between the 12 and the 12 pro models😅
Your explanation is really interesting
My favorite app for my 12 Pro is the 3d scanner app. You can measure a whole room, or just scan it and create a 3d image of a room or object.
It’s not precise you can be an inch off of the true measurement.
love the editing and this is very informative thank youu
I love how you said "it SHOULD make potrait modes better" because it doesn't. I don't know if lidar is ONLY used with dark mode but it's frustrating.
Lidar only works on night mode. Try to put your finger on it when taking a portrait in sunny conditions, after remove your finger, and you will see that it doesn't change anything.
@@albertomelia that's what I said, it's super frustrating that apple cannot even be bothered to update their camera app to it uses lidar on every potrait mode. Same with Iphone 11 users not getting nightmode on ultrawide because apple workers are a bunch of scumbags.
I'm going to test this today and make sure that it doesn't work with regular portraits. If it doesn't, i'll pin a comment with the clarification. Cheers for the heads up.
@@MarkSpurrell try on non humans, thats usually when the Iphone goes retard mode :/
After years of not having a smart phone (never truly needed one), I was in a position that I needed to get one and I almost didn't get the 12 Pro (mostly budget reasons), but I'm now glad that I did, I didn't realize it had so many new things compared to the last two releases and even just the standard 12 model. I've been having fun with an app that is still kind of beta-but-purchasable on the app store that uses the LiDAR to almost "see in the dark". It still has some work that needs to be done to make it really good, but it generates images in a way that you can see rough outlines of objects so you can avoid them in the dark. You can't see details, but you really don't need details in the dark anyway, just need to be able to avoid that rock or tree right in front of you :D
App name?
@@bigman-em7cc It's called Night Vision, but it doesn't look like it's up anymore. I see other ones, but not by the same publisher. Might be better working ones now anyway.
Good explanation
Easy to understand and very useful
Everybody talking about LiDAR in cars, but law enforcement has been using it since Smokey and the bandit.
Would be more impressed if Flir thermal cameras were on the iPhone .. Now that would be interesting
I’ve been saying this
I am so glad I got the navy blue 12 pro max! My friend got the gold one and it looks awful!🤣

You have got a new subscriber ! 👍
What app do you use??? I don’t understand
The into reminds me of this one site... I can’t remember what it’s called 🤔
I wanted to know about LiDAR. 👍 Good job.
What application is it? I don’t know which one is right
Thanks for explaining. Good stuff
extrapilated ....thats a fckn neat word
Is the sensor in the iPhone better/worse than the one on the iPad?
Superb Video.
I got the 12 pro like a week before the 13 pro came out :p
the cat. I love the cat.
Is the sensor good at detecting the distance of up close objects? For example can it tell that a toy is 10 cm away from the device rather than 11 cm? Great video btw!
Interesting and useful info. But why are you sat in the dark? More light would improve your video a lot.
Nice one. Just what I was curious about.
Thanks for likes!
Very informative vid. What is that tripod light over your shoulder? That can come in handy for me. Thanks
if taking selfies for instance, is LiDAR safe? I thought lasers were dangerous for your eyes for instance - cause blind burn spots? Any more on this?
Myself many others major issues with front camera craping out. This new model is very finnicky especially if shook or vibrated. The optical image sensor shits the bed. Not impressed at all.. Should have kept my 11.
Note 20 or Iphone 12 or 12 pro ? what would you choose?
Awesome video! Btw, what phone do you use everyday as your personal phone?
Currently I'm testing the iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20 FE. They change monthly.

My pleasure!
great vid, ever considered making a discord server?
Can't wait for this LiDAR camera to pop up on an 4000+ mA battery android phone 📸
Cool video, thanks for sharing!
I remember LG G4 had laser AF. Is it the same thing ?
Nope. Similar yes, but slightly different. Laser AF uses one single laser to send and bounce back information rapidly and it does that over and over to get focus/depth information. The iPhone LiDAR shoots out the light grid to map larger sections at once. The laser af also being a single laser is more susceptible to being tricked by mirror and super bright/exposed areas.
@@DylanM15 Cool. Good to know, thanks.
Help me. All I have is Polycam. What am I missing out on. iPhone 12 Pro.
your cat is so adorable.
nice video
App Name??
For some bizarre reason... the portrait mode works better on my iPhone XS than it does my 12 Pro. My 12 pro always seems to blurr out my ears! P.s. great vid
I'm one of those ninth user base who are 3d character artist in game development and collectable. I'm considering iphone 12 pro for lidar to scan real life object. Like scan my own likeness and 3d print it.
Wow thank you
The 3ds mastered AR games 9 years ago.
You realize most of the utility for the lidar sensor is not for the consumer right? It’s for environmental mapping and it works when its in your pocket, and companies/governments are using it to create realtime 3d vector maps of the entire world.
That's a very cool lamp you have
first video , subscribed . right oon point
everyone say in the comments make a lava lamp review
can you tell what is a lava lamp 😂👀
I really want this LiDAR sensor, but the iPhone Pro in my country is 1250 euros. That's 400 euros more compared to USA (999$ = 850 euros). Here the 12 mini is at the price of 12 Pro in USA. :(
1:45 No Mark, not again. You're gonna blind my eyes with those lasers...and over that I'm gonna trip over your YT setup in Night Mode.
Apple finnaly gave me a reason to consider an iphone
I love u man

I have heard of vehicles using ultrasonic and radar sensors for park assist, but none that use LiDAR. Most vehicle based LiDAR applications (that I’m aware of) are applied towards medium to long range object identification and ranging for autonomous or semiautonomous driving. Do you have examples where it has been used for park assist? If so, that would be interesting!
Thanks for the demo. Just wondering what is the minimum distance to the object?
What aspect ratio are you using ? Looks really cool when I pinch to fill the screen
2:1!
Is it better quality to use the JPEG format or the heic format for photos I switched from default heic to jpeg and noticed a slight slight improvement especially when taking photos on the side. what does other people thing ?????
my boss asked me today if it can estimate the square footage of a icebox/refrig compartment in a boat, can we do this yet?
what i wanna know is where did you get that awesome retro spotlight ??!!
Lidar sense should have range of 10mtrs rather than 5mtrs , would have done more wonders
Can you do this with the iPad Pro?
Will Lidar be worth the upgrade and sensor shift do you think it’s just a marketing thing probably ok but not earth changing be use only reasons I can see upgrading pro max is sensor shift that larger sensor it supposed to have I’m not sold
I think I remember Elon's quote "LiDAR will die, you'll see", now Banggggg here it is on iphone :D
elon is a fool
@@carholic-sz3qv That fool is a billionaire, you know?
@@GuuiYae is he the only billionaire???
@@carholic-sz3qv Well, He has Tesla, Space X, Boring Company, .....though he's actually has mountain of debts, but yes he is a billionaire. Not the only 1 of course.
I’m pretty sure that was Elon from the future (today) and he was predicting the next iPhone release.
IPhone 12 has tech that is yet to become mainstream.. 5g, lidar.. Better wait for 1 or 2 years for these tech to become mainstream than buying it now
At what range it can work?
Cat is like- this foo likes me
That cat has all nine lives in can tell
So lidar is pretty much a cash grab? Rather have 120hz over lidar
