In this video, I will show you how to install an after-market stereo in a 2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx. This process will work for any Chevy Malibu from years 2004-2007.
Great Bit Of information on how to correctly do this. I have a 2007 Malibu, and just like you said: "It has no aux port and a transmitter doesn't work". This was very insightful as well as helpful. Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you do much to taking the extra time to do the step by step disassembly and reassembly. The photos are sharp and clear. The after market radio and extra looks great. 👍
Thanks a lot for making this video, just replaced the radio system in my 05' Malibu LS today and this helped me out. The CD player went out on my Factory radio (and I wanted an AUX and USB option). I ended up ordering/buying that (METRA Ltd 40-GM20 Gm Radio Antenna with Mini Adapter) when I only really needed the (Metra 40-GM12 GM Antenna Adapter (Barbless) that fit the antenna chord that's already in the car!!! $7 gone but o'well. Loving the radio and can now play my CD's again and my MP3 player in my car. Make sure to keep track of all screws and where you took them from. You will be taking off the bottom portion of your dash, it will take a little force to pull down and snap off of the clips that hold it in place, maybe wear some gloves as not to hurt your fingernails. It will also take some force to snap it back together when returning everything back into place. I used my Tablet with wi-fi to watch this video while installing, for reference. Make sure you have everything you need (Radio, Metra 40-GM12 GM Antenna Adapter (Barbless), Scosche Dash Kit for 2004-Up Chevrolet Malibu Double Din Installation Kit (bought this on Amazon.com and IF you are buying a double DINN radio). If you have any problems or questions, let me know here and I'll try to help you out.
Very good and thought out video, I as well was thinking of why are the side panels needed to be removed, but I went back and at 6:15 of the video I can see one of the securing tabs that go in behind the drivers side panel, I am assuming that the passenger side is the same. Thank You for the heads up on the Metra product.
Muchas gracias me ayudo mucho yo mismo lo cambie y ahora disfruto de un mejor sonido en mis borracheras en el rancho gracias saludos desde TECATE bajacalifornia
Not sure about buying the adapter. I can live without the trip counter, oil life info (change oil every 3000kms anyways). Before I do, would taking out the factory stereo and not replacing the DIC, have any other negative consequences like losing my remote car start?
Scottie Parks I'm pretty sure the fuse is by the passenger seat. Here is a link that might help you more: www.chevymalibuforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=433026
I get power from my aftermarket stereo in my 2005 Malibu but no sound and it seems it’s tripping the anti theft system.....as soon as I plug in the stereo with no key in the ignition it delivers power to the stereo and sometimes will disengage the ignition all together. Someone recommended that I get an interface for the stereo. Any tutorial videos on installing those?
What did you do about the whole changing from miles to kilometers thing through the stock stereo are you not able to do that anymore or did that Metra thing make up for that? I want a new Stereo for my 06 Malibu but I'm worried about that even though I don't think I'll ever need.
What's that middle piece you installed called? It has the info button and everything. I want to put a after market radio in my car but I don't want to lose my trip meter and everything else. So I'd love to have that part.
Hi I have a 2005 Malibu and I cant find the accessory fuse to hook up the 12 volt wire from the aftermarket radio. Help please. It needs to be a fuse where it is only powered when the key is turned or car is on and when car shuts off the power to the fuse goes off
tap into the A/C fuse usually works the best or the radio one either in the back of the radio or by the feet. Call GM and ask where that fuse is located if you cant find
So what is the purpose of taking off the trim and screws on the left and right side? Why not just the center part around the radio? I have an 06 Malibu SS and want to replace the stereo because the CD player doesn't work and I just want to update the look. Also did you have any electrical problems or is there an anti-theft alarm?
The reason I just didn't pull the center trim back was because the center trim is connected to the trim on the right and left. After replacing the stereo, I have had no electrical problems and no anti-theft alarms.
+Tyler Thomas, I had to buy an antenna adapter. If I remember correctly, the old antenna plug was not long enough or at the correct angel to plug into the after-market stereo.
J Ro Pro thanks for replying, I just took out the old stereo in my friends car but now we have to connect the new wiring by either soldering or those but connectors.
I want to change my stereo but in order to change from kilometers to miles i need to go into the settings through the stereo how do i keep that so that if I put a new stereo in is it even possible?
+Alisson Melo I would still recommend the Metra 99-3303 kit. This should allow you to retain certain information from the car computer. You will probably also need a wiring adapter and radio antenna adapter.
Just bought a 08 Malibu for my daughter. One question - I notice GM (stupidly) is sending alerts (TPMS, etc.) to the radio display. How do you get these back? Thanks for the video!
J Ro Pro Hey thanks for the reply. Haven't done the work yet but I did some research and found that unit on amazon, so at least now I have a game plan.
hey man, i went to a stereo place in my city and the guy told me if i replaced the radio with a double din it would completely mess up my car. he was saying it would make the airbags go off at random times and shut the car off and such. i dont mind losing the information it provides at all. so my question is, do i have to have the metra mounting kit? or can i just buy a regular double din mounting kit and not have the airbags and stuff go off?
Cody Rone I have not heard of anyone saying anything like that before. I'm not sure why something like changing a stereo would cause airbags problems, although I guess I can't say for sure.
+Cody Rone I changed my radio only using a regular double din mounting kit and nothing is wrong with my car a year later. I only lost having the information showing up like it did on the factory radio.
Is the Metra 99-3303 the only stereo mounting kit that will display the car's info. Some of that info is valuable and others I just simply like to look at once in a while. I bought a car from a lot where they just get it mechanical working order and body repaired. I was not able to convince them that the radio was as important as say ...the transmission (tongue in cheek joke) so the CD does not work which would not be so bad if there was an input jack, such as you mentioned in the video. Problem is, the Metra 99-3303 is so expensive and I rather have that money go to the mortgage or car payment
It is the only kit that I found that will display this info. I found that on Crutchfield's website that if you buy a new head until, they will give you the Metra at 1/2 off. Still not super cheap, but better.
+nochtczar I'm not huge fan of the Metra kit either. You can for sure install a double DIN unit if you want. The only thing is that you will loose some of the information the car computer is putting out like the trip meter, fuel range, and oil life.
Very informative video. I have a 2006 Malibu LS, I've heard around the internet that replacing the factory radio will prevent you from passing a smog check. Is this true? Did any of the car's anti-theft security activate when replacing the stereo? The reviews on Crutchfield for the Metra adapter seem to be pretty mixed. The biggest complaint is that it feels very cheap and breaks down alot. Have you had any problems since you installed it? I've had my Malibu for about 4 years now and I've always wanted to get rid of that horrible factory stereo. Always been weary about replacing it due to some of the things I've heard. Thanks.
I have not heard about failing smog checks. Where I live, I don't need to pass emission tests so I can't comment. As far as the security system goes, nothing was triggered when I replaced the stereo.
Dovyou know if the original stock radio takes in aux cords i have a 06 maxx lt and i hate having to play cds. Ive thinking about adding an aux cord to my stereo is it possible on this kind of car
I guess, in theory, you could daisy chain an additional RCA output which would lead to a 3.5mm input jack you can install in the dashboard. Only way this would work though I guess would be to turn off the radio and plug in your MP3 player. Never tried it so expect anything.
Yes you lose that option with an after market stereo, swapped out my stereo in my Mazda last year and those options no longer work, I now have an 06 Malibu and I’m hoping to switch the stock stereo out because those models are complete shit
Might be a little late haha but if you don’t get it you will lose your driving info, like mpg, temps and other things like that, radio will work though

Great tutorial! Definitely prefer the still photos with VO over any shaky one-hand camera work in most other stereo install videos.
Great Bit Of information on how to correctly do this. I have a 2007 Malibu, and just like you said: "It has no aux port and a transmitter doesn't work". This was very insightful as well as helpful. Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I ordered most of my parts on Amazon, they actually let you know what parts are compatible with your model of car.
Thanks for the video! Worked perfectly. Wiring the Metra and JVC head were tricky at first but the video made the rest a breeze.
I'm glad to hear it :)
Man you had everything I needed just wanted to see you do it 😭

Tambien le pusistes la pantallita de información ?
This was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!
I've got a 2002, but this is a great video. Good job
Thank you for the instructions. Now I'd like to see how the best way or best route to wire an amp kit's power cable through a 204 Malibu.
Did u the connect the wires to the metra 99-3303 to the stereo wires???
In your opinion, is the DIC important? My factory radio is really dim and I can barely use it anyway. I'm thinking about going with the PAC option.
I personally really like having the DIC, but it is your personal choice.
what type of connector kit did you use? i am unsure of what i need to purchase and don’t want to buy the wrong thing
Not sure about buying the adapter. I can live without the trip counter, oil life info (change oil every 3000kms anyways). Before I do, would taking out the factory stereo and not replacing the DIC, have any other negative consequences like losing my remote car start?
My remote start still works.

What did u do for the red power wire?
What's that middle piece you installed called? It has the info button and everything. I want to put a after market radio in my car but I don't want to lose my trip meter and everything else. So I'd love to have that part.
its just a metra dash kit,its 250 unless you but something else then its 150

What kind of equipment can I purchase if I am okay with not having the driver information center? Will it be considerably cheaper?
***** Crutchfield calls it a radio replacement module. It will be cheaper, maybe $50 to $100 cheaper.
Great video but no guide on how to install the wiring.

hey I just put this in a 2007 chevy malibu and it works great but my anti theft lock light will turn on randomly while driving what should I do?
+Steven Kurokawa I have not heard of this happening before. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to tell you. Sorry.
Thanks for the tutorial!
Does the old antenna plug into the new stereo, does the antenna fit it
+Tyler Thomas, I had to buy an antenna adapter. If I remember correctly, the old antenna plug was not long enough or at the correct angel to plug into the after-market stereo.

If you get the Metra 99-3303 Dash and Wiring Kit, you can change info like that.
Do you know how to set the clock on the dash kit
I think you need to hold down the top 2 buttons or the bottom 2 for a couple of seconds.
I need to know if necessary adapter for the 2007 malibu? If necessary what the model? thanks.
+Alisson Melo I would still recommend the Metra 99-3303 kit. This should allow you to retain certain information from the car computer. You will probably also need a wiring adapter and radio antenna adapter.

does anybody know where to tap the 12v+ ignition switch?
@77ljgc did you ever do that to make it work? Im struggling with it right now
what is the piece under the radio that will still tell me what is my gas range and stuff called ??
I used a Metra 99-3303 Dash and Wiring Kit.
Great help! Thanks!
Great useful video! Thank you for the info. If you can share please. Is there a link to the store from which you bought the combo?

J Ro Pro well I meant putting in a big radio without losing all that, it's pretty important. Oh well, I'll just save up for a newer car.
@77ljgc Here is your option: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0FB-0048-001V6
Hi Jason,
Did you need a wire harness for installing this stereo, or was it included in the dash kit?
its included in the metra dash kit with the driver controls which is 150 with a stereo that's under 100,i just got mine.
***** where did you get your metra and cd player for 150?
Crutchfield. Com, came out to 200 after tax, love it

+Dee Boy (Blue Devil) The stock radio doesn't have an AUX, well at least it didn't in my 05'
TrueX7 ia it possible to install one? Im wondering if it has an input in the back of the radio for installing an aux
+Dee Boy (Blue Devil) hi
i was thinking about hack the cd player adding an aux jack to the audio signals that comes from the cd unit.
+Dee Boy (Blue Devil) II have an 06' LT V8 and I use a radio transmitter for now.

when you put the metra in did you lose the volume control on the steering wheel?
I don't have volume controls there so I can't say for sure. If I had to guess, I would say you would loss those controls.

What do you mean by the radio being locked?
i have a 2004 chevy malibu can u tell me the site were i can get all that same stuff for my car please?
Not sure if you want the exact things that he has but I got all of my stuff from Amazon.com. It actually lets you know what parts fits your car.
he said www.crutchfield.com if you call them they are very helpful, I have been using them for yuears they are a great company to deal with...
tatosity +1
I went to Best Buy and the installer told me I need to buy a $100.00 interface kit in order for the new radio to work. Is this true?

how many inches is the malibu original radio

anybody how much a dash kit cost for an 08 malibu cost to install a stereo
Ignition switch wire?
Hi Gilbert, are you trying to connect the stereo to the ignition switch wire?
Thank you!
Thanks
I have a 2003, just missed it 😫
Im sorry where can I buy this metra ? My wife's Chevy Malibu 2004 starts a really bad sound and vibration and comes from the stereo so I guess it's done cause the cd got stuck long time ago now that stupid noise don't let you drive peacefully so annoy thanks.
+Moses Avila I got mine from Crutchfield.com
ok thanks
Moses Avila you don't have to buy a new radio to fix your Cd problem. take a credit card with some ductape, wrap the tape around it so the sticky side is up and also make sure u hold the tape just incase, then stick it into the cd slot and press eject and the cd will come out. I did this and I wasnt sure it would work but it did! the previous owner had a cd in there too, so I got 2 cds out with this method!
