To me this film is like Blade Dunner or Dune. The story is solid, but what I’m really coming back for again and again is the atmosphere. This movie gets so much out of sound design, lighting, score, etc, that most blockbusters don’t take advantage of.
YES! “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that” and this movie has that arc for Batman. I choked up when he reached out his hand and the first person to grab it was the little boy. Matt Reeves is brilliant.
Right I feel like that was so symbolic. When we someone experiences trauma and is left with PTSD they can sometimes remain the age they are mentally when the trauma occurred or split off and become an entirely new person. The little boy trapped in the heap of metal could symbolize Bruce (him as a child when he experienced the trauma) and Batman takes inner Bruce by the hand to lead him to the light. Now the two personalities are simpatico.. so to speak. Idk my interpretation I suppose.
@@zachwalton3544 That’s exactly how I interpreted it as well. The mayor symbolized the city and its citizens behind her, but the little boy, the victim of a violent city like Bruce reaches out first. It’s Bruce saving himself first. And then the city follows him through the valley of the shadow of death. Its my favorite scene in the film easily.
I loved this movie when it first came out, and I still love it today as I think it gave Bruce one of the best character arcs he's ever had in a Batman film. The Batman got me more interested in Batman as a character and superhero than I ever have been. I just have nothing but respect for Matt Reeves as a director at this point, as he really did make a masterpiece of a film.

What a great essay. Totally overlooked the fact that Riddler states, it is not important who is under the mask of batman but that his actions uncover his true identity. Kinda sad tho, that you didn't mention the Penguin, bat-mobile or even Falcon that much ^^' Still very enjoyable!
I love how he's brutal but refrains from killing cuz it really drives home the impression of a young early batman still driven by fear, resentment, and anger rather than one driven by justice and morality.
I mean, he *is* driven by morality, but it’s the self-righteous moral condemnation that many in our society have that allows them to watch on dispassionately and unsympathetically as our justice system fails time and again, basically torturing people in prison and making life ridiculously hard for them after they’ve gotten out of prison, dooming them to a cycle of crime and misery. After all, they chose to be criminals, and criminals are immoral, unlike us upstanding, moral individuals. *That* is the morality that drives The Batman at the beginning of this film, and that is the mindset that Matt Reeves wants to criticize with this film. Batman as a character is less driven by moral judgement and more by empathy. He is the Batman who congratulates Harley Quinn on being released from Arkham Asylum and the one who pays for Nora Fries’s medical care (btw that’s part of why I hope we see Mr. Freeze as the next villain in the Batman 2), the one who roots for Harvey Dent to get better and the one who sits by a hurting, scared, incredibly dangerous little girl and holds her hand as she tragically dies (huh, I seem to be describing the DCAU Batman, can’t imagine why). He’s also the Batman who carries a lollipop in his toolbelt in case a child needs it. Batman is kind, caring, and empathetic, and that’s why it’s frustrating to see the popular image of him as a brutal rich guy who just goes out at night and beats people up. “If you can’t imagine your Batman comforting a scared child, you haven’t written Batman; you’ve written the Punisher in a funny hat.”
To get an even better look into Edward/The Riddlers mind and motives you need to read Riddler: Year 1. It's a six issue comic based on him a year before the events of The Batman and basically explores what Edward goes through to get to that point in his life. There is currently 3 issues out and they're incredibly well written and the art suits the tone of the character so well. It's also written by Paul Dano, the actor who played The Riddler. You come to find he's not as uncaring as you assume but he's really just incredibly mentally ill and doesn't know where to channel all his negative emotions. Obviously only 3 issues are out so he's due to get more character development in the next 3 but yeah. Very good read, I certainly recommend it.

The music is also excellent. Also whoever did Colin Farrell's makeup to turn him into year two penguin deserves an Oscar cause he's unrecognizable!
I remember watching the video with my mother and as soon as we went out of the cinema, the first thing she said was: "This is the first Bruce Wayne that acts in a psychologically plausible way to the trauma he suffered." She is a psychotherapist, so I tend to believe her in that area. Great review, and great film.
"Maybe more brutal than any other Batmen we've seen" Actually, Batinson takes third or even fourth place here. B v S, (Which I actually haven't seen but I've seen enough to know he's 1) and Keaton are definitely way more brutal. To begin with, Batinson doesn't kill, but he also doesn't use his tasers unless guns are involved.
Saw this in theaters with my little sister and wife. They are not Batman fans or superhero fans at all and they were mind blown. My wife still asks to rewatch it . I love this movie. Everything I ever wanted from a Batman movie
Nice work. Good points, good commentary. Some sharp applications of modern screenwriting philosophy around character wants, needs, etc. I also like how you tied in the themes from Last Jedi, and counterpointed the flaw of Infinity War. I hadn't put my finger on why Thanos feels like an empty character, but you caught it nicely. We don't see how he arrived at his plan. He explains it, and even provides visual aids, but this just isn't the same as showing. He never actually comes together as a character, because we never actually understand who or what he is. He's just a threat. I loved this film, but I definitely feel it could have stood to make more of Catwoman and Batman's connection. I felt like Catwoman ended up getting less development than she deserved. The film does a great job early on showing Batman's total lack of interest in her needs or feelings, but I felt like this sets up the need for Batman to get schooled a little more harshly over his callousness. Not just an off the cuff mention that he's probably rich. I feel like Catwoman is the perfect character to really lay it out for him that he's not the only one in the world who's known loss. Riddler can belittle Bruce Wayne's loss, but Catwoman could come from the other side, pointing out that Batman isn't alone in his suffering. The movie touches on that, but doesn't really dig into it. Annika's death should have changed everything for Catwoman, but we didn't get to see directly how badly it affected her. That whole plotline felt clumsy, missing opportunities to strengthen the movie's core themes in order to rush to the Batmobile sequence, which felt tacked on, no matter how cool it was. But hey, that's just one man's opinion. Still probably the best Batman movie to date. Which is a miracle in itself, considering it emerged not only from the turmoil of the studio, but also the pandemic.
Loved the idea of a Bruce Wayne being addicted to batman. To deal with trauma people often use an escape, and end up diving deeper into darkness. Bruce indulges in this escapism this to the point where Gotham suffers because he’s ignored his responsibilities as a Wayne. Really unique perspective on the character I’ve never seen before. Also the cinematography and set design is unmatched. Every single shot uses movement, perspective and focus in a unique way, not a single shot is wasted or taken for granted.
Hehe, if you ever read the comics, you'll realize this is the primary take on the character, but for whatever reason most films try to change Batman into a different kind of superhero. This one was faithful!

All ''THE BEST'' things this movie brought us: - The best ever Gotham in live action (not debetable) - The best ever Batman in live action (my opinion ofc) - The best ever Bruce Wayne character arc live action (also my opinion) - The most realistic Batman ever. (thats not debetable) - ONE of the best villains in superhero movies (opinion but quite not debetable) - By far the best ever Riddler (not like he had much opponents)

From his dialogue to his detective work this was the most comic accurate on screen batman. The one thing that was off was how he didn’t play the rich playboy (and I loved that they took that out)
The Dark Knight is still one of my favorite films ever, but no one has captured the essence of the caped crusader better than Matt Reeves has with The Batman.
I love this movie so much. It’s my favorite Batman movie. But I still Love TDK trilogy - the two will forever be my favorites. I am actually looking forward to a Gunns Batman though and think we may finally get the Batman from the comics/animated movies. I also hope Jensen Ackles gets the part. I love a grounded Batman but im ready for the Batman that Green lantern thought was actually a meta-human. The Batman who can stand toe to toe against big bads along side the Justice league
This was a dope video on the subliminals. I loved the Chris Nolan ones but this was darker and batman was very different, younger and troubled. Keep these up

Great video. I want to talk about the comments at the end, about choosing which films/directors to make/have. I find it interesting given what we know in 2024. On the one hand I agree, but on the other its hard to predict. While you correctly identify that the "Joker (2019)" was great in the same kind of way that "The Batman (2022)" is, 2 years later we now know that Joker 1 was an accident that happened to turn out great, and that the director was completely out of touch. Not with the lore, but with the message, the audience and the world. Not only is "Joker 2" a bad sequel and a bad film, but it turns out the message everyone got from Joker 1 was actually wrong, according to the director. The message everyone could clearly see, was that Arthur Fleck, a normal guy who struggles with lots of issues, is doing the best he can while the world ignored him and often beat him down. He tried so hard not to "go Wearwolf", but in the end he snapped. Its a story about how society failed Arthur, and how we create the monsters we fear. But according to interviews with the director, we are wrong. We're not supposed to feel sorry for him or understand him. Instead, the director seems to be more in-line with the same society that Arthur had to deal with. That Arthur should be treated simultaneously like a monster and a joke. Looking back at Joker 1 and knowing what I know now, I can see this director's warped vision, and the things we "misinterpreted", but I'm stretching and those ideas don't come naturally. I have to say, this was the most beautiful screw-up in my life time. How do you screw up your broken message so bad, that it becomes a masterpiece? Not really sure what to do with that info. I don't know how you could predict situations like that from happening? Even still, Joker 2019 was good, so in an ideal world DC would have greenlit the first film, then parted ways with the director and left it as a stand-alone film. It didn't need a sequel anyways, so I call that a win.
I had doubts that this movie was going to be good. I didn’t even want to read the reviews until after I saw it. I loved every moment of it, and I still do to this day.
I was worried about the movie when i heard Pattinson was going to play Bruce, but I have to say he really played a great Batman. His Bruce was too isolationist, but his Batman was great. You could tell that a lot of care and passion was put into the film.
I think the movie had more potential. The trailer got me hyped for the movie, but there were definitely a lot of flaws; story plot holes, overuse of swearing, mediocre fight scenes and the second part of the movie didn’t really have a payoff. In comparison to the dark knight (not fair I know), it really isn’t the best Batman movie.
After one year I still considered the Batman one of the best comic book films ever made what Matt Reeves did was fantastic he understood the character more than anybody Robert Pattinson is easily the most faithful adaptation of Batman I've ever seen they understood the character and they got Batman right
The fact that Riddler went after Bruce Wayne (an innocent person) proves that the Riddler didn't care about seeing the corrupt get punished. He just wanted an excuse to take out his pain and anger on everyone/anyone.
That’s also the point of The Riddler and Batman being two sides of the same coin. Which supports Batman’s character arc in terms of Batman’s realization that his actions did inspire The Riddler after he heard one of Riddler’s followers say “I’m vengeance”. That Riddler mirrors Batman in what he would’ve become if he hadn’t saw the error of his ways/actions and the effect that it had and brought.
@@matthewmira3265 Very true. Many of Batman's villains reflect some dark and often barely controlled aspects of Batman and/or Bruce. I think The Batman captured this element of the Batman's mythos very well.
Although a minor character, Batman’s interactions with Penguin are my favorite. Hope to see all these actors in a future addition - they certainly left the story open for expansion (they put Riddler in the cell next to the Joker - what could go wrong there?). 😂
ONE YEAR ALREADY?!?! WHAT THE FFFFFFF!!! It still feels like it happened last month for me. This is such a beautiful, gritty, dark, hopeful take on the character. And yes, hopeful for the future of the franchise, cause Bruce is all sorts of fucked up for the most part of the film lol.
The Batman and The Dark Knight are my top Batman films! The Batman has by far given us the best representation of the world's greatest detective and the evolution of everything from his gliding, a batarang, his connection with Gordon and just so much BATMAN
I think this is the best Batman movie we’ve gotten since The Dark Knight. It did so many things right on both a technical and narrative sense. It ANGERS me so much how it got snubbed at the Oscars. This was alot better than Wakanda Forever, Top Gun: Maverick, and Avatar: The Way of Water.

It’s my favorite movie of all time.
Saw this in theaters with my little sister and wife. They are not Batman fans or superhero fans at all and they were mind blown. My wife still asks to rewatch it . I love this movie. Everything I ever wanted from a Batman movie
great video, short and to the point but also very good explanation of ideas presented. i loved it 👹
Awesome, thank you!
March 4th, the perfect time to recommend me this video UA-cam. Exactly 1 Year later
The greatest movie ever since the Dark Knight
both are fantastic!
@@thegoldman25 I think it's slightly better than the dark knight, but not by much! It's definitely the best batman film since the Nolan trilogy.
@kdusel1991 Speak for yourself, cause for me this was way better than Nolan’s films including The Dark Knight…
What about The Joker? Lol😂. That one got best actor. Well deserved I must say, but the film jumped to conclusions though picture was great.
Great video! Thanks for uploading it. Have watched almost all of the ones you've posted and enjoy your editing and directing.
Also, you probably don't have any control of it but the ads on your videos are ridiculous. I'm not sure why there are so many? In this 30 minute video there were 7 ad breaks. 7 😐
Awesome, thank you!
I still remember the EXCITEMENT during the Penguin chase and the Batmobile going through the fire
All ''THE BEST'' things this movie brought us:
- The best ever Gotham in live action (not debetable)
- The best ever Batman in live action (my opinion ofc)
- The best ever Bruce Wayne character arc live action (also my opinion)
- The most realistic Batman ever. (thats not debetable)
- ONE of the best villains in superhero movies (opinion but quite not debetable)
- By far the best ever Riddler (not like he had much opponents)
You have the best The Batman video i’ve ever watched, literally on my 3rd rewatch right now lol. I hope you get more subscribers, you have really good video essays i was shocked you don’t have millions yet! 👍👍👍👍
I appreciate the kind words! Thank you so much for watching!
I liked it a lot when it first came out, but the more I watched it, the more I loved it.
I've watched one to many of your videos, my friend. New Subscriber!
You sir, make awesome content
I appreciate that!
Keep doin what you doin mane great content bro, lovin this shi dawg!
Will do, thanks!
From his dialogue to his detective work this was the most comic accurate on screen batman. The one thing that was off was how he didn’t play the rich playboy (and I loved that they took that out)
That was intentional, he will play the rich playboy in the next movie, probably even sooner in the next penguin series
@@spunkymaniac9312 It’ll be a slow evolution. We probably won’t see him as the rich playboy until the third film or halfway through the second
The Batman got me back in to dc after not really caring since like 2019.
Amazing essay. Subscribed!
Thank you!
Never was a huge Batman fan, but this movie is probably in my top 3 movies of all time
Same, it’s my favourite superhero movie
Just watched again for the first time since theatres. Think i liked it even more this time around.
I love this movie, people that hate on it just don’t understand where Matt Reeves is trying to go with this version of Batman
If I could only watch this masterpiece one more time in theatres
I hope there’s a re-release. Maybe even in IMAX
This was a dope video on the subliminals. I loved the Chris Nolan ones but this was darker and batman was very different, younger and troubled. Keep these up
Couldn't agree more!
Surprised you've made a video about The Batman for it's one year anniversary.
It’s only good if you are under 25. The reality is that the world’s greatest detective can’t figure out who the snitch is.
Thanks for the video! You bring up some really good points about Batman's arch in the end, and I like this movie even more now!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My fiancee woke me up because a new gold man video dropped
this gave me a good laugh
You have a point with the authorship over and item. The Sam Rami Spider-man movies definitely have tbat
Oh shoot. It's been a year? It took me a while year to watch this?
I always always sub when I find creators that create amazing videos similar to this one,so I was gonna but I forgot I was already subbed😅so I liked turned on notifications and commented, did all i could think of to help this video get a tad bigger than before
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it
The penguin show makes this flick even better.
This was the best Batman movie. It was sooo good!
hard to believe it’s about to be a year
Great video!!
Just watched it and its great.
Only great Batman movies are the Nolan movies and now Matt Reeves's The Batman.
Afleck Batman is horrendous.
7:57 Didn't Bruce literlly spend the rest of his years living hand to mouth as he moved from one place to another.
14:11 Gold Man try to go one video without referencing the Last Jedi challenge (failed)
😁
Its been 2years now bro thats crazy work
Masterpiece and my favorite direction Batman has gone.
I feel like the guy from saving private ryan. How did this come out 1 year ago.
I feel the same way.
hahaha me too
That's a brilliant video I have subscribed you
And the first person pov camera shots were amazing
I had doubts that this movie was going to be good. I didn’t even want to read the reviews until after I saw it. I loved every moment of it, and I still do to this day.
First movie I’ve ever gone to see 3 times in theaters
I was worried about the movie when i heard Pattinson was going to play Bruce, but I have to say he really played a great Batman. His Bruce was too isolationist, but his Batman was great. You could tell that a lot of care and passion was put into the film.
youre a legend matey
Im definitely interested in watching Batman 2. But please don't make it too long
Although a minor character, Batman’s interactions with Penguin are my favorite.
Personal favorite Batman movie
Can't believe it's been a year already
The Batman and The Dark Knight are my top Batman films! The Batman has by far given us the best representation of the world's greatest detective and the evolution of everything from his gliding, a batarang, his connection with Gordon and just so much BATMAN
Both are fantastic! Thanks for watching!
This is film and it's 12min theme "Sonata in Darkness" has been the backdrop of my life since it came out 👌🏻
no matter how hard I try to watch this movie. it always puts me to sleep. i have tried to see this film like 4 times and always dozed off. i dont think its a bad movie but man its a slo burn! (and yes i do like like the film) on the other hand i could watch nolan's stuff back to back in one sitting.
also riddler was lame very disappointed with his silver screen outing. however penguin stole the show. cant wait for the hbo series!
