Great video! Anyone can take "nice" photos on a sunny day at a photogenic location. In my opinion, what distinguishes a good photographer from a snapshooter is the ability to recognise the potential in their surroundings and use the prevailing conditions to make great photographs. Light, form and texture is what it's about. More aspiring photographers should watch your channel. Best regards.

Just found your video today by accident. Loved every second of it! I like your way to explain your toughts. Even the scratchy pictures creates their own style and fascination. And you are 100% right - fog is awesome! As well as the good old 6x6!
Many years ago when I spent a lot of time outdoors hiking and photographing, I used my UV-filter to make "fog", just breathe heavy on the filter and wait until you see the effect that you want are right ;) I also used an old UV-filter to soften images with "nose-fat" :D
Thanks! I will always love HP5. For some reason I keep trying some other film stocks every once in a while but always come back to my favorite. Pushing it to 800 or 1600 is the sweet spot for the grain, in my opinion. Good luck, and looking forward to seeing what you make with it!
Hi, Peter, and thanks! Fog removes the background, so I'd say look for subjects in busy environments that can benefit the most from the isolation that the fog offers. Almost anything will work, people can be great for this too. Also look for things that disappear in the fog, like roads, bridges or power lines. About exposing for the fog, it depends on your composition. If you are showing a lot of "whiteness", then you will have to overexpose it. Hope this helps :)

Love this video and love the imperfections of film. The marks on the last two shots looked cool I thought. Waiting for a foggy day so I can try some ilford 3200 and see what results I get. Next step for me is medium format and I would definitely go for the bronica just like yours.

Amazing how shooting in black and white really transforms an otherwise drab landscape when viewed in colour. As you weren't using a metered prism, can I ask how you arrived at your settings please?

I used to have a proper light meter but it was too much gear and found the digital camera to do a more than good enough job.

I‘m so curious about my rolls of HP5+ exposed @800 and @1600. I‘ve never pushed that film. What developer do you use ? D76 stock has been my choice since I bath my film myself ... Great foggy captures btw. I really love that rural countryside.
I use Ilfotec HC but I used D76 for a while and it worked just fine. I believe the developing times were a bit longer, though. I'd encourage you to try pushing it, I love the look :) Depends on the dilution. Thank you for watching :)
Very nice. A thought for composing for taller tripods; can’t you put the camera at 90degrees and look through the viewfinder? After all, it’s a square format... would that not work if you don’t have a prism?
It'd totally work! It's something I always forget, though. I actually tried a couple of days ago when I found myself in a similar situation. It worked even though it gets even harder to compose haha. Thanks for sharing that tip :)

Will fog damage a non weather proof camera? I'm deciding between a panasonic g7 (not weather sealed) and a g80 (weather sealed), the area I'm currently living in gets really foggy and I want to film and take photos whipe the fog lasts.
Fog is moisture, as you know. However, in all the years I've been shooting (since 1973/4) I've never had any problem when shooting in fog or low cloud. Just keep a cloth handy and remove the moisture every now and then, while you're shooting. Lenses are a bigger worry as moisture promotes the growth of fungus if you leave damp / cold lenses in a bag. Keep a couple of packs of silica gel in the bag and take your lenses (and body) out of the bag when you get home. Take the lens caps off and leave the lenses in sunlight (fungus cannot grow in daylight) and let your bag dry out, too. If you are in an air-conditioned room on holiday and you're in a hot / humid climate - or in a warm room in a cold location - your lenses and camera can get condensation. Always give the camera / lenses enough time to acclimatise when you set off on a shoot so the condensation can evaporate. If you've been away for weeks and had a lot of condensation, sending the camera to be cleaned and serviced (and the sensor cleaned professionally) is a good investment as it will prolong the life of the camera (especially if it's digital). Finally, no camera is 100% weather-sealed - only made "resistant", so always take care.
I can’t seem to get a good negative in fog. The contrast is always too low, regardless of whether I over or under expose. You recommend the orange filter…?
How are you editing / post processing your film? In the darkroom, you can always use color filters to increase the contrast, on top of the one you might want to use in the field (red being the most intense, but not sure about its effectiveness in snowy landscapes unless it's a clear day). If you scan your film, you should be able to use "dehaze" and other tools to increase the contrast with software. Another option is to push your film. I used to push HP5 to 1600, so a couple of stops. That means exposing it 2 stops underexposed and then over-develop it by 2 stops. Maybe a combination of all of these will help.
@@aows thanks. I did my first effort at pushing, which was marginally better. Perhaps I should have warmed my chemistry a bit. I’ve even tried magenta on full with the colour head on my enlarger, combined with a contrast 5. Again, better, but not enough. Shame - I’ve had some nice compositions that haven’t delivered on the promise…
@@josephasghar that's a bummer, but don't give up! Keep experimenting, you just never know. Also, in foggy conditions, we want to have the subject relatively close to us, and use the fog to make for a cleaner background. If everything is far away, then the shot will lack clarity. That might be what we are going for, though, so it depends on what you are trying to achieve. To achieve more contrast, just try to place your subject as close as possible to you. Good luck!

Agreed on rain, it's not easy and dangerous for you and the gear. The music is "Medieval Myths 8", "Medieval Myths 13" and "Wasteland", all by Andreas Ericson.
I needed to downsize my camera bag. I carry my camera, lenses, tripod, film back and other accessories, plus all the stuff to record these videos (video camera, lenses, batteries, another tripod...). Those lenses for the Bronica are pretty heavy. I miss it sometimes, but I think it was the right decision :)

I needed to downsize. It's not only the camera, lenses, tripod, film backs and other accessories, I also have the video camera and its lenses, batteries, tripod... I figured that if I ever needed it I could just shoot digital. For the most part, I've been fine without it. But I miss it sometimes.
Most of my videos are that way, very little of me. This one was slower on purpose, I wanted to explain what I was doing and hopefully communicate the calmness of the day and my excitement about these conditions. Have a good day :)

Why did you sell your 50mm?
I needed to downsize my camera bag. I carry my camera, lenses, tripod, film back and other accessories, plus all the stuff to record these videos (video camera, lenses, batteries, another tripod...). Those lenses for the Bronica are pretty heavy. I miss it sometimes, but I think it was the right decision :)
