I had a girlfriend whose parents were Irish and I asked her mum to say something in Gaelic. She said something that sounded so poetic and beautiful to my ears. I then asked her what she'd said in English and it turned out to be utterly filthy.
I could probably say something to you in Vallader - an old language people speak in my neck of the wood, I‘m working on learning - and you‘d probably think, I were quoting some important old document.....might just be: „I am pretty sure we will get snow very soon“ 😉
That is an good Irish mum for ya 👍

I'm Irish. So I can kinda understand what this song means (little bit). But honestly I'm just listening to how smooth your voice is. You're truly a wonder.
I've been listening to this song a lot, learning it and it's pronunciation. You Irish have a beautiful language, the language of my ancestors.

I'm irish andcan speak gaelic fluently here is the translation for those who are interested. Gaelic lyrics:
Chorus: Óró 'sé do bheatha abaile (3x) Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh.
Verse 1: 'Sé do bheatha, a bhean ba léanmhar do b'é ár gcreach thú bheith i ngéibheann. Do dhúiche bhreá i seilbh méirleach, 's tú díolta leis na Gallaibh. Chorus repeats.
Verse 2: Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag teacht thar sáile, óglaigh armtha léi mar gharda. Is Gaeil iad féin ní Frainc' nó Spáinnigh, is cuirfidh siad ruaig ar Ghallaibh! Chorus repeats.
Verse 3: A bhuí le Rí na bhFeart go bhfeiceam, muna mbeinn beo ina dhiaidh ach seachtain. Gráinne Mhaol agus míle gaiscíoch, ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh! Chorus and end.
English lyrics
Chorus: Oh-roh welcome home (3x) now that summer's coming.
Verse 1: Welcome, oh woman who was so afflicted it was our ruin that you were in chains. Your fine land in the possession of thieves and you sold to the foreigners. Chorus repeats.
Verse 2: Gráinne Mhaol is coming from overseas, armed young warriors along with her as her guard. They're Irish themselves not French or Spannish and they will rout out the foreigners! Chorus repeats.
Verse 3: With the help of the King of Miracles may I see, although I may live but one week after. Gráinne Mhaol and a thousand warriors proclaimming the scattering of the foreigners! Chorus repeats and end.
Wow, I could understand that song was talking about Grainne Mhaol!
He be speaking our native tongue 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
0:56 I love it how we still refer to the French as Gauls. Awesome rendition by the way
If you look at the Dineen Irish-English dictionary France is occasionally referred to as Gaul in the translations, although nowadays Gall just means foreigner in general not just a Frenchman. The Greeks still call France Gallia though.
They still call the English, saxons in their language.
@@geroutathatyeah, it's almost like there was some horrible series of events that hindered the modern development of the Irish language....
im not even irish but this song somehow feels like home, kind of comforting. does that make sense?
Yes, yes it does.
It does, because I agree.
"sé do bheatha 'bhaile" roughly translates to "welcome home", so, yeah, it does make sense.
(I'm not an Irish speaker, so that translation may be off or a bit simpler than the full, true meaning)
@@medraut_pen ohhhh that's crazy, I didn't know! thanks for the information
100%, I feel that same way :)
OK so this isn't a word for word translation, because it doesn't translate well that way, but here's an approximate version.
Chorus:
Oh-ro You are welcome home,
Oh-ro You are welcome home,
Oh-ro You are welcome home,
Now that summer’s coming!
Verse 1:
Welcome lady who faced such troubles
Your capture brought us to our ruin
With our fine land usurped by thieves
And you sold to the foreigners!
Chorus
Verse 2:
Gráinne O’Malley comes over the sea,
With armed warriors as her guard
They’re Irishmen - not French nor Spanish
And they will rout the foreigners!
Chorus
Verse 3:
May it please dear God that we might see,
Even if we only live for week after,
Gráinne Mhaol and a thousand warriors -
Routing all the foreigners!
Also, this is version of the song is known as the Pádraig Pearce version. The original is actually a Jacobite song.
Thank you so much

One could line up the videos chronologically, only by following the progression of the beard. I think I have beard jealousy.
When is Spotify becoming a thing though? My algorithm is having a whiplash going between this and geochemistry, and it don't know what to do with itself anymore.
I'm currently at 9 cm length (3,5 inches for the other inclined), all it takes is time. About half a year if you are really dedicated. But most men grow it in stages sticking to a certain length before deciding to grow longer.
As for your algorithm problems, you could always look into carpentry or blacksmithing? Or marble tracks (that a deep hole I've fallen into recently)
@@patrickd9551 Well, now I'm jealous of you, too. I've always said I'd be glorious in a beard, unfortunately my genetics don't agree.
Does 70 videos about statistics count as blacksmithing? I sure felt like I was hit by a hammer after I was done with it, at least.
Good grief, the marble tracks! Do they still post new videos? Your algorithm sound like it has as much of an identity crisis as mine does.
I don‘t like beards - but whatever .... I‘m here for the music
@@Caramelle58 like it or not you keep listening to this guy sing and you’ll have one
@@dannycolwell8028 Yiikes - nobody told me ! So these videoclips should come with a warning ⚠️
I can only imagine what this song would have sounded like to the people at the time. "welcome home, it's now summer, come and fight! Grainne Mhaol is coming over the sea to fight with us, and with that we're sure to win!"
For those who don't know, Grainne Mhaol/grace o'malley/a number of other names was one of the most legendary pirates to ever sail, and the most famous to come out of ireland. Her story is all that it's cracked up to be, and she was made out to be quite the hero. Most notable in my mind of her adventures was that she went before the queen, basically had tea, and was ALLOWED TO LEAVE ALIVE, despite being a wanted pirate. Something truly special.
I literally WAITED for that song and you delivered, oh my god I cant believe it, I love this song!

This is Padraig Pearses version. The original Jacobite song was welcoming the Stuart Kings home with French and Spanish soldiers to assist the Irishmen to throw the foreigners out of Ireland.
Thank you for this information💚
this song is rarely done with the raw power it deserves but my dude absolutely nailed it

My motivation to pick Irish lessons back up has increased 100 fold just listening to this.
What I find interesting is watching his mouth in the different melodies. The differences are subtle but telling. You can see the mental changes for how to sing the melodies in how he holds his mouth.
This is the most metal thing ever . I'm not Irish but I can respect a people so close to bigger aggressive nations that managed to keep their lands and nationality and language.
Love ta see the language spoken about like this
The dislikes were people who are salty they can't sing as well as Colm McGuinness! Dude, put your music on iTunes or a streaming service! It's AMAZING!!!
Interestingly, the chorus does resemble "What will we do with a drunken sailor" a little bit. Sounds beautiful! What's the Colm count in this one?

Óró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile actually predates What Should We do with the Drunken Sailor by a fair amount. Óró is first found from 1745/1746, whereas the Drunken Sailor is from the mid 1800s. A lot of sea shanties are made by sailors putting new words to tunes they already knew, so that may be where the Drunken Sailor comes from, though there's no proof of this as we don't actually know who wrote the song and when.
@@eoghanmyers2330 I didn't in an any way mean to imply that the song borrows from Drunken sailor ― I think a lot of people mention it in the comments simply because Colm had done it earlier.
And yeah, folk songs (which sea shanties essentially are) tend to borrow from each other heavily, and sometimes even a song from another end of the world resembles an old song from home.
All I can say after seeing this comment and hearing how it sounds is "How in the absolute hell are you supposed to move your face?"
After watching this, I had spittle all over my glasses!
anyone else got like goosebumps in the first 3 sec?

I've never heard this song sang with such intensity...its my favorite!
My great grandfather is originally from Ireland he stowed away on a boat when he was 13 yo so this resonates with me a lot even though I was born in America lol
Your songs and covers aren't just a one time show your friends thing, for me they are a listen to all the time kinda thing, I love what you do, thank you.
I, Polish, don’t understand a thing: I agree with this man whatever he is saying.
This brings out the Celt in me!
for those wondering, its a folk tale about the conquest of Ireland by the English and the rebellious triumph of Grainne Mhaol, aka Grace O' Malley, the pirate queen of the Irish Coast and her bid for Irish independence and her many attempts to drive the royal navy from Ireland's coasts
Thank you bro
One of my favorite songs. Your version is wonderful.
this fills me with determination to keep learning Irish b and dive deeper into my Irish heritage
I feel you bring a proper firmness and passion to the song. I feel as though your face portrays the happiness and joy of singing while also the hint of passion of what the song means.

Brother, you hit it home with this song rendition of a classic song.
Omgg this is perfection😱 I sang this Celtic Women style for a secondary school show years back
Thank you for keeping this great song alive and sharing to many new people
I am sure i am not the only one who likes these Old languages (Irish, Welsh/Cymraeg, Latin) they sound so different but still beautiful
This be the best version I've seen. Good job lad
this guy's talent seems to have no end! impressive
I never realized how beautiful the Irish language is, I have a tiny bit of Irish in me but not enough to really be worth anything. I remember a saying from gone with the wind, the Irish learn to love the land they live on as their own mother, or something along the lines of that
I have found an interest in earthly type things like crystals and herbs to ward off evil and I’ve been doing research. My mother would consider me trying to be a witch but no I just want the aesthetic with me having herbs to ward away evil
This is definitely my new favourite song you've done! Santiana is a close second 💜
Thanks so much, Emily!
A song wrote by Patrick Perce as a war-cry for the Irish Rebel Brotherhood against the British. He fought the British in a failed uprising, and when he lost his life and his body captured, the Brits denied him a grave, for fear of him becoming a martyr. Well, he did anyway. BTW, some suspect he had asperger's.
The more videos you do... the deeper your voice seems to get, and the more majestic your beard seems to become.
love this!!! fabulous!
I may be from the US, but this song is my *jam*! This and other songs were my inspiration for trying to learn Irish.
My great-grandmother emigrated from County Cork with her parents as a little girl, but she never spoke anything other than English around people when she grew up. I really wish she had taught me some Gaelic.
