Pretty easy to tell when the chain needs sharpening. When you are cutting you can tell a huge difference when you have a dull chain besides looking at the chips. If you are getting a finer chip like sawdust its def time. Some people touch up their chain every time they use their saw. I only do when its needed and I don't cut into the dirt or anything so I usually can go a while before actually needing to sharpen the chain. I touch them up every now and then. If it gets to dull I usually just take it to the saw shop and let them sharpen it for me they charge like $5-7 usually.
