I came to say iOS garage band has a midi keyboard feature that makes it so only keys within a chosen scale can be viewed, and Logic for some reason being the grandfather of both GB on iOS and Mac, I am absolutely confused such a simple feature isn’t in their “professional” choice of Daw 😂

I would expect this, though, since the two operating systems are quite different. There are many iOS apps, of all types, that are not as complete or extensive as the original PC or Mac versions they've been based upon. No matter what, there is always something that will be left out of a port to iOS, which reminds me of the many times I've heard Mac and PC users express their incredulity as to why anyone would use an iPad. But, that said, having been a PC user for many years, I hate Windows and have, since using an iPad in 2012, wished I could replace my PC with my iPad. I'm almost there....

Interesting to see both sides of the argument. A very good mini series, Patrick. I like both. I'm currently concentrating on Mac, but there are a few iOS plugins I miss that are too expensive to buy for Mac. I expect I will eventually find myself jumping between the two for different parts of a project.

I think using them together the way you’ve described is the best way to use them both honestly.

Nice one. Here’s another advantage:.MacOS can create aggregate audio interface, so you can connect more devices.

Well done, Patrick. For me it mostly comes down to how you use GarageBand and how you prefer to do recording. I much prefer using my MacBook Air. The iOS would be handier if I used tons of loops and had GarageBand build more of my songs. I prefer to plug in real instruments and microphones through a good audio interface. I use the Drummer to make and refine drum parts and synths or pianos for any keyboard or other instrumentation needs. The things that tip the scales much more in favour of the MacOS, besides what I stated above, are: much better connectivity with ports and fewer, if any dongles, easier file management, and better mastering. The iOS is fun to play with and make cool grooves and such, but for recording and editing, I prefer using my own instruments as much as I can. GarageBand on my Mac already has way more stuff on it than I will ever use and so I don't see any limitations compared to iOS.

I just replaced my "vintage" MacBook Pro with a Mac M2 Mini with 24GB of RAM. GB, like just about every other application flys at the speed of light. Something I cannot say for my three year old iPad!! My reference is and remains with the Mac version of GB. The iPad version is great when travelling and you want to get something down. However, as you point out, attaching anything (keyboard, interface, Mic) to the iPad is not worth the effect and expense. I am now on my last iPad as the MacBook Air is a much better/cheaper option.

It IS actually possible to go completely off grid with an iPad. For a simple setup with iPad (I use iPad mini 6) you can connect something like the Presonus Audiobox Go or an old Alesis Core 1. Neither of these require electricity and will run directly off the iPad battery. Very basic interfaces but they both work without the need for external power. I do this all the time.

I’ve used a JBL Charge as power bank to a USB powered hub, to which my audio interface was connected. Too bad for the speaker latency, though.

The iRig Keys 2 Pro also works with an iPhone or iPad so you can play and record in a forest, on a mountain or at the beach.

Yeah Patrick very true. I started on Mac OS but as my iMac got older started trying to record on iOS. Both have their pros and cons but I find that OS just works better for me personally with better control on individual tracks and quicker editing of the drummers.😊

That's similar to me, except I dabbled on Windows (technically the Speccy and Amiga were first) but gave up until I jumped onto iPad last year. One of the big advantages of iPad to me is not being tied to a desk, even though I'm often in the same room as my desk.

The lack of automation options other than volume in GB for iOS (& the auto-normalization) are really the two killers for us! It's what made us stick with Logic for iOS, but we're totally with you on the skeuomorphic touch instruments - why aren't they in Logic for iPad?! You can't have it all...

I do play guitar have an audio interface you recommended to Scarlet solo, And studio monitors. thank you Patrick keep up the good work🎶

Very informative. May I ask a few questions? I’m using o MacBook Pro and I use GarageBand as the recipient of tracks I get from karaoke version. I’m getting better at navigating about but I still have a long way to go. From there, I’d like to save the project as a single file and then transfer it to Stage Traxx 3 on my iPad. I know this probably sounds like a simple thing to most but I don’t have any idea what to do or where things go when they’re saved. Do you have any ideas, suggestions, or tips that could help me?
    Thanks so much.

Hang on Patrick…isn’t this a bit like Dr Who turning up and laying out the case for why the Daleks are the most monstrous vandals in all the known multiverse - then also acting in their defence and saying how the most destructive being in the known multiverse is actually Dr Who?! Oh hang on, I think he/she/it more or less did exactly this already. Ok fair enough, carry on! Take care all.

HOW CAN I DO THIS ON MacOS GarageBand???
I DO NOT NEED TO KNOW WHO TO CHANGE THE TRACK TEMPO...
sorry for posting this question on both videos... I'll actually get around to watching both them this weekend

advantages and disadvantages ❤😂❤ of ios and mac garageband . Sounds like it Depends on each person’s or artists specific demands and aspirations , and , if you want to progress to make more professional Garage Band or similar or better sounds and production. And your ability to learn how to use more complex garage band features ie often whats found in garage band mac .? . I like the kiss principle as this stage, translates for me as using
Garage band Ipad ie for solo singing and making backing loops , mainly for fun , keeping it simple and portable and using the touch functions . Note I know their are many who think all garage band is for amatures 😅😊

No, I didn't mean the "fact" of automating more than the volume feature. I meant that despite IOS automation is the only one, it doesn't deny the fact of creating good Music with or without it for any talented person.. I personally don't use it..
And to be honest, I wish I could have a Mac with Logic pro.. But I can't afford that for now. And I certainly won't say that if I have a Mac.. But still I can make some good Pop Jazzy and Chill Hop LoFi on IOS GarageBand, and use more than output devices to manually ajust the sound and volume.. And I'd do the same even on Mac..
