The one thing I've heard that interests me about Logic is the ability to change time signatures within songs. Switching back between 4/4 and 3/4 or jumping from 2/4 to 7/8 mid-song is something I'm experimenting with and is not possible in GarageBand. If you want to explore this part of Logic Pro it would most definitely interest me. Thanks for all your breakdowns and vids. They help unravel and demystify all the stuff I don't really get.
Wonderful video which I am going to share with my other songwriter friends who use Garage Band. This answered all my questions about whether or not I should switch. I really do love your videos Colin, they are much more helpful than anyone else on UA-cam not just about GarageBand but about recording and producing in general. Thank you.
I echo the numerous kudos to Colin. I’m a hobbyist. I’ve found that GB suits my needs. If I need additional instruments I turn to excellent freebies like BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover, Crown Hill and others. I’d rather spend my time composing than getting into the weeds of mixing, compressing, etc. I’ll happily hand over those technical details to folks who are skilled in those areas. Therefore, for me, moving to Logic Pro would not provide an improvement.
As always Colin, great video. I felt like I was mastering GB, so I bought LPX. The difference is like going from flying a kite to flying a 747. I'm frankly overwhelmed, hesitant to even start. I don't have a band, multiple microphones, all that. Just me, my midi, a bit of talent, and a desire to constantly learn and grow. Your videos really help.
Excellent video 👍 For guitar players, I'll add that you cannot re-amp in Garageband, but you can in Logic. I've been using GarageBand for years and always wanted the increased functionality in Logic, notably busses, track stacks, etc. but have been able to justify putting it off. This is largely because I primarily use guitar modeling plugins, which allows me to always have a clean DI that I can easily change sounds on. Having recently picked up a Fractal (and some real amps), the ability to re-amp is what made me finally upgrade.
Great video! I will eventually upgrade to logic. After 2 years of learning how to record, mix, and master, I see how important it may be to learn in Garageband before making the change. It has taken me a long time to learn and allow all this to sink in. Also, it might be little overwhelming to learn in Logic. For me, I see the importance of putting my first album together in GB before moving on. I am almost there!
i upgraded to logic because it lets you use multiple time signatures in a song without having to resort to awkward hacks like in garageband. Everything else is just a bonus!
Automation on plugins, cool. Been using Garageband since 2010. Just upgraded to a new MBP, think I'll add Logic to the upgrade. This video helped, thanks!
Wild! I was just scouring UA-cam for these very comparison videos. I like yours a lot. One thing that doesn't get said enough is that Logic Pro X is available for a free 90 day trial. If anyone is on the fence you might as well just get it! 90 days is plenty of time to really dive into it.
One thing that is actually pretty useful is that in Logic you can change the time signature in a track within a song. Can't do that in GB and it can be decisive if such an occurrence would emerge.
Thanks Colin. I’ve been on the fence for a while. My three questions: 1. Is it available on PC (I’m setting up a dedicated recording new space and a new computer will we required and laptops tend to be cheaper than MacBooks) 2. Can I import my GarageBand projects into Logic without losing too much? (Could you do a short video on this if it’s specialised) 3. Is the drum tool similar to the GB drummer tool in creating tracks, rhythms and fills, etc. I’d love to see a video of that too. Thanks for your GB videos. They helped me release my first album and am well on the way to my second, which is much better as a result. (‘Making drums sound real’ was a game changer!!)
Thanks Colin. Great video as always. I’m halfway through the video and all I’ve seen so far can pretty easily be done in GarageBand, just like you said.
I honestly wanna get logic sooner then later a lot of these features you went over really make me feel like I can work a hell of alot faster working on logic I feel like I’ve been getting a bit frustrated with my limit in my pluggins I can put per channel racks in garage band and this video does make logic a lot more of a priority for me in my mind as some one who’s been working on a garage band album for a while I might wanna finish it out on logic

GREAT video!! The only reason i would consider switching to Logic (i'm a songwriter, NOT a performer) is for the integrated Flex Pitch feature... I'm not the greatest singer, and my pitch isn't always 'on point'... and the fact that it's integrated into the software is a bonus (updates included). Awesome video, thanks for that! I’m brand new to recording my demos and I’m using garage band with some midi drum samples I purchased. My problem is there’s hundreds of drum files in various folders and no way to audition them before putting them into my song. So I have to manually open the “fills” folder and look through all these files and drag them in one by one until I find one that works. As you can imagine it’s very time consuming. Does Logic Pro let you audition these files? Thanks so much!
Thanks 😊 for that. I really appreciate your videos cus not many garageband video tutorials out there. My question is, is garageband for beginners or professionals. The reason is that I have used garageband for 4yrs now on an ipad and thinking of Mac mini. So should I stick or upgrade to logic. Thanks
Another great video. Since watching your videos my recordings have become much better. Starting to do some static mixing on a few songs. A question that I do have is on the volume of my Mac. I'm monitoring through JBL powered speakers. I usually keep the volume on my Mac at 7. Would you recommend bringing the level of my computer all the way up while going through the monitors that are turned all the way up?
Hard to say without hearing it. You want to mix at a conservative volume (not too quiet, not too loud), so all the way up on both sounds like it would be a little loud to me. But again- hard to say without hearing!
£200 well worth it imo , great vid Colin . Not saying my mixes are much better but I’m learning so much more , next bus 😂 I felt I could not get any more out of GB . Still love gb and soundtrap for starting out . The tools are worth £200 alone imo in logic 👍🏻

Hey man, thanks for the video, very detailed analysis. Quick question for anyone... Does Logic have a lot more sounds, keyboards, trumpets, etc than GarageBand? I think I have downloaded the sounds that GarageBand has and I feel limited. Thanks a lot in advance :)
Good morning Colin, you are pure gold! I have changed my music production workflow recently. I have shifted my studio from a place nearby to a distant village where my friend musician dwells. He works in Logic Pro. In my home studio, I have a Rode mike and a Focusrite sound card and I plan to sing out my rough vocals at home with the help of another musician to give me the key/scale /tempo for the songs, recording being done in GarageBand. I plan to share the GB project with my village studio musician who can open the project in Logic. I have asked him to prepare a rough track and send me the same. With the help of this rough track, I want to sing the final vocal takes at home in GarageBand, do the necessary editing of the vocals myself, and share the GB project to the village studio for final mixing and mastering. Is this workflow a good one? Can you or others please help me in this matter of getting things right? Regards. Take care.
Goodmorning, Dr. Somanna! The one issue you might run into is that you will not be able to open his Logic session in GB. You can open a GB session in Logic, but not the other way around. I would follow that workflow but have him send you a mix of the song with the vocals muted (just as an mp3 or wav file) that you put in GB and sing over. Then you send him the GB session. He then imports the new vocal tracks using the import data function (like I mention in this video) into the original, mixed session and mixes them in.
@@TheBandGuide Thank you Colin for this swift reply. I am aware that Logic Pro projects can't be opened in GB. The rough track I want from the musician is as mp3 file. and not the LP project, Over here, the rough track means only the rough music track without the vocals. Guess my plan of action is workable according to your reply😃.
Wow! I'm shocked at the fact you did not include a MAJOR advantage to Logic which, to me at least, is FAR higher in importance than anything you mentioned and that is Logic does not limit your creativeness in a song. With Garageband, you MUST decide what time signature your song is in and keep to it. You cannot change time signature within a song so you are entirely limited and Garageband DOES hold you back creatively. That is such a HUGE point for Logic and why I want to upgrade to it - JUST even for that ability.
@@markwelsh9068 it’s all depends what the end goal is. You can have a different project for each time signature and once you’re happy with them you can bounce each track (or extract out the frozen tracks from the project folder) and then import them into a new project to refine and finish the mix. You’d need to mark up where each time signature starts/ends and then be creative in your plug-in use. This is the digital version of how bands like the Beatles had to work when they only had access to 4 track machines. I do this sort of thing anyway as I’m too easily enticed backwards in my mixes where if I have the tracks locked in as sound field I’m less likely (although I can go back and edit the origins GB project and re-export) to try and fix stuff that way. The other beauty of doing this is you save so much CPU bandwidth. Obviously if there are time signature dependent effects you need to utilise you’ll have to get even more involved and flick back and forth between the project saving your plug-in chains so you can easily import them into other projects.
@@markwelsh9068 I just had another idea. I’m not at my computer to check but try this. Set a drummer track in the time signature you want and then once it’s correct to how you want it lock it then change the time signature and start a new drum track lock that and continue for all the drum parts. The only issue I see with this way is that you’ll have to make sure you have the correct time signature selected when you want to add plugins and only unlock the ones that match that time signature. If the first part of this works then it’s a decent workaround but if it doesn’t it’ll have to separate projects. I’ll keep thinking. There may also be other solutions.
I’ve been using Logic Pro on iPad for about a year at this point, and I finally got my parents to let me buy a MacBook. The only issue is that I don’t have the money to get Logic Pro, but it’d be a huge downgrade to go back to GarageBand even if it is on Mac.
Nice video. It may be worth to put in that it is possibility to try Logic within 90 days for free (trial version). I just haven't found the information if the big releases of Logic are paid (ex. 10 to 11) or you pay once and for all.
That's a great point and I'm realizing now that I'm not 100% positive. I switched to Logic from PT in version 10, so I haven't had to pay yet. Not sure what will happen when they drop version 11, though.
@@TheBandGuide I want to buy Logic Pro X now because I'm afraid that Apple can change the sale method to subscriptions only from version 11. (Logic for iPad is subscription only). On the other hand version 10 is already 7 years old and it would be a pitty to pay an upgrade from 10 to 11, when 11 is practically around the corner.
I’m just looking to be able to sell music or give it away. I’m using GarageBand on my iPad but I’d love to have a way to share a song but the receiver can have it in their music library whether it’s iTunes or Android’s music app. Is this possible?
One major way you didn’t mention that GarageBand holds you back is the lack of midi control for external synths, or drum machines. This is really annoying when your want to arpeggiate an vintage synth, or record a drum machine that is in sync.
I actually can't say 100% because I actually switched to Logic from Pro Tools and then went back to GB and realized how powerful it was, so I've never had GB without Logic. That said- I know there are at least some string instruments you get in Logic that aren't in GB and I'd imagine there are others I'm not aware of
is "drummer" the same in logic & garageband (other than the splitting out tracks thing)? i can't actually believe how good drummer is in garageband - if it's better in logic my mind will be well & truly blown!
Been on the fence awhile. Thanks for the info. Do you give feedback on GarageBand mixes? Could you listen to a track or two of mine so I can see if I’m on the right track? All my tracks are on my UA-cam channel. Thanks again.

More about logic please
Planning on it!
@@TheBandGuide Thanks
If I download logic will I lose my garage band files ? Or beable to keep doing my old garage band files on logic ?
One major way you didn’t mention that GarageBand holds you back is the lack of midi control for external synths, or drum machines. This is really annoying when your want to arpeggiate an vintage synth, or record a drum machine that is in sync.
I think about switching from GarageBand Logic because, like I understood, there are more instruments that come with logic. Is this true?
Reducing a specific loud part of the song is a pain in a*** in GarageBand… you have to do automation 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Logic...Logic...Logic... well for me.
POV you don’t have money and you just use GarageBand 😭
