Hamilton could legally be president. There was an section in the constitution that said anyone who was in the US at the time the constitution could become president. So he could have become president if he hadn't been shot, published a pamphlet about having an affair, and if his son hadn't died. There were a few things in the way of him becoming president.
You are correct that the Constitution didn't bar A. Ham from becoming president, but his "foreign" birth was still used as a political point against him.

Arkforge Entertainment ALEXANDER HAMILTON. What did they say to you to get you to sell New York City down the river?! ALEXANDER HAMILTON. Did Washington know about the dinner, was there presidential pressure to deliver?!
The more I learn about Thomas Jefferson the more conflicted a character he seems to me to be. He loved democracy and egalitarianism (as do I), but he was a VERY wealthy slave owner. Anyone want to recommend a good biography on Jefferson? There must be a dozen.
Oh, more than that. I would look at his autobiography, the book American Sphinx by Ellis, and is you REALLY want to dig in, Dumas Malone's 6 Volume biography. Also if you want a odd angle, check The Jefferson Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. In this Jefferson, a Deist, tried to "combine the biographical information about Jesus' life from all four gospels into one version, and he took out the supernatural events." He did this to try to distill the focus of Jesus' teachings. Needless to say, it's an unusual and somewhat controversial work.
Dreamcastpowa I disagree. Jefferson was not "smart enough to know… [slaves] shouldn't be freed right now." Everyone who held such a view was a damn fool. Slaves should have been freed immediately.
I agree that many people based their opinion that the slaves should not be free on their own experiences and the experiences of Santo Domingo. I also agree that slavery was important and that abolition was messy, but it was still right and good and long over due.
Jeremy Fridy I must disagree. While you are essentially correct that slavery was the great compromise, there was nothing essential about kicking it down the road (especially after the Constitution had been ratified). While abolition would have been a difficult and divisive thing, it only became more so over time. The southern economy was less reliant on slavery than they would be later on, and the longer that system was in place the more difficult it became to overcome. While we can never know for sure, it is almost certain that abolition would have been far easier to implement in the 1790's than it was in the 1860's. I agree that our Founding Fathers were products of their time, and everything is now judged by hindsight. Still, it makes no sense to ignore hindsight. We can no more say that the great compromise was a necessary choice than say that the trail of tears was a necessary choice. While this idea of necessity justified the compromise at the time, we ought to learn from the ultimate failures of that sort of compromise (assuming we agree that the Civil War ultimately marks the great compromise as a failure). In a world that enables and incentivizes certain evils, we will trend further towards rather than away from those evils.
But Southern States repeatedly said they needed slavery to be legal or they would not join. They said they would leave the union over taxes and tariffs, much less property seizure, which is what it would have been seen as. The demanded that slaves be counted as 3/5ths of a citizen just so they could keep up with representative strength in the House. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been easier to attempt to implement logistically, but it would have led to the South leaving, though at that period it might have avoided a war, just leaving two separate nations, and probably less hostile ones than later. Asking the wealthy aristocracy to give up their labor source and symbol of power is a hard sell, especially since they had just finished a war where keeping their property safe from the government was seen as part of the reason for fighting.

That was a real nice declaration Welcome to the present, we’re running a real nation Would you like to join us, or stay mellow Doin’ whatever the hell it is you do in Monticello? If we assume the debts, the union gets A new line of credit, a financial diuretic How do you not get it? If we’re aggressive and competitive The union gets a boost. You’d rather give it a sedative?

"The Electoral College system would continue to misrepresent the will of the American voters, most notably in 1876, 1888, and 2000" ...aaaand now again in 2016. You guys are really good at this!
Deplorable Bias well in all thouse cases a president was elected without the popular vote. Most people did not vote for these people how did they get into office in a DEMOCRACY?!!! The electoral college that's how. So what is it that he/she and I do not anderstand?
I think it's pretty tricky to create any kind of video series that doesn't contain some bias. I think this series works hard to approach complex subjects from a variety of perspectives. I don't really see the shaming language parts. Is it the "me from the past" segments?
Everything we can interpret has ideology within its body of thought. This includes everything you are interpreting. I appreciate seeing your perspective. The old 6 and 9 debate of who is seeing the subject more clearly.
6:44 "The immigrant emerges with unprecedented financial power A system he can shape however he wants The Virginians emerge with the nation's capital And here's the pièce de résistance..."
I love your crash course!!! It is interesting, fun and extremely well written. I learn a lot about American history, politics, constitution ... while laughing like a kid. Congratulations. Have you given any thought to the idea of making an expanded version of the subject matter in longer videos? I would love to watch it too! Thanks a lot and Kudos!

You know, looking deeper into Hamilton's plans, it seems pretty awful but then, I remembered society. The people could really screw things up and I can see why he was afraid of that. I mean, I'd be scared for my LIFE if America was a true democracy. The 2016 Election speaks for itself.
Thanks for the video. I Only have 3 questions. 1.Do you know how i can go about understanding the US budget and economy ( how does it works best, what impacts it)? 2. where do i go to compare the different policies of the president/ Ex If i wanted to compare Pres. Clinton to Pres. Reagan where would i go to compare there policies. 3. How do i keep up with the senate and what laws are being proposed and passed.
"If we assume the debts the union gets a new line of credit, a financial diuretic, how do you not get it? If we're aggressive and competitive, the union gets a boost, you'd rather give it a sedative?"
Hamilton was eligible to become President. The Constitution states No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. Hamilton was around during the adoption of the Constitution. He came to America in 1772 at the age of 17 and was a delegate to the Convention so he is eligible to have become President

Hamilton: Thomas [Jefferson]. That was a real nice declaration
Welcome to the present, we’re running a real nation
Would you like to join us, or stay mellow
Doin’ whatever the hell it is you do in Monticello?
If we assume the debts, the union gets
A new line of credit, a financial diuretic
How do you not get it? If we’re aggressive and competitive
The union gets a boost. You’d rather give it a sedative?
A civics lesson from a slaver
Hey neighbor!
Your debts are paid cuz you don't pay for labor.
"We plant seeds in the south we create!" Ya keep ranting.
We know who's really doing the planting.
+ThatRavenclawChick Don't lecture me about the war, you didn't fight in it!
+Jade
You think I'm frightened of you man?
We almost died in the trench,
While you were off getting high with the french!
+Deanna Burke Thomas Jefferson, always hesitant with the President
Reticent-there isn’t a plan he doesn’t jettison
Madison, you’re mad as a hatter, son, take your medicine
Damn, you’re in worse shape than the national debt is in
Sittin’ there useless as two shits
Hey, turn around, bend over, I’ll show you
Where my shoe fits
+Fatima Barrie EXCUSE ME
Im crying tears of laughter because I think I knew most of this stuff from 4 songs. Cabnet Battle #1, Cabinet Battle #2, Election of 1800, and The Adams Administration
5:48 "Imagine what gon' happen when you try to tax our whiskey"
I love how Hamilton fans took over this video. Well done, friends
Thank you John Green! You are amazing!
*mentally assaulted by Hamilton references after every single line*
I was about to fail my AP US exam until I saw this the day before. Now I am confident that I got at least a 3. Keep doing what you're doing.
"The beautiful wavy hair of a Caribbean God."
Ooh someone has a mancrush on Hamilton :).
"and Jefferson?" "in love with France.." "yeah he's so elitist!

10:16 I guessed Abigail Adams... the Queen of Snarky Feminism.
Who'd ya think I thought:
IMA COMPELEM TO INCLUDE WOMEN IN THE SEQUEL WORK
9:08 Washington quote has aged like fine wine
that Thoughtcafe graffic at 3:26 was actually pretty epic
"The Electoral College system would continue to misrepresent the will of the American voters, most notably in 1876, 1888, and 2000"
...aaaand now again in 2016. You guys are really good at this!
WanderingRandomer you don't understand America or the intent of the founders.
Deplorable Bias well in all thouse cases a president was elected without the popular vote. Most people did not vote for these people how did they get into office in a DEMOCRACY?!!! The electoral college that's how. So what is it that he/she and I do not anderstand?
"...passive-aggressive attempts to impose your ideology upon other people." - 98% of all youtube comments, lol.
98% of all UA-cam videos.... Crash Course included!
+Jennifer Boergers Overt attempts to push your ideology on other people via shaming language: Almost all of this series so far to this point.
The youtube comments on the series, this quote from this specific video, or the actual series itself?
the video series itself. the "your" should really be "one's" or "his" i guess to clarify
Watches old school jack,
Alexander Handy-Pen
MaxHereTheHubOwner why
its just like the cabinet battle omg omg
Thank goodness for this video! I needed to write an essay on what led to the rise of political parties in the 1790s!!!
6:44 "The immigrant emerges with unprecedented financial power
A system he can shape however he wants
The Virginians emerge with the nation's capital
And here's the pièce de résistance..."
you guys make this so much more interesting then watching it on the History channel
I SALUTE YOU WITH A PHUMS UP
I love your crash course!!!
Raise your hand if you're here because of the musical
John, stop hating on New Jersey!! :)
Things I know about New Jersey (as an Englishman)-
It's full of Italian-American Cosa Nostra
Futurama slag it off
How I Met Your Mother slags it off
John Green slags it off
You guys need some good tourism adverts or something.
mankytoes New Jersey has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with italian americans...
Tony Soprano?
Not a real person...
Thanks, try the real family they're based on? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeCavalcante_crime_family
Thank you Crash Course for making this information a lot more digestible! A+ + +
I apologize if I have missed the obvious, but does "Crash Course" share any of its source material? Or maybe there is a list list of recommended books for further reading related to various topics that an interested reader can follow up on? I love the series!
Thank you,
- shane
thank you, thank you, thank you, you make learning fun. and I am going to ace my AP exam :)
your videos are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I couldn't pass APush without you. THANKYOUUUUUUUU
You know, looking deeper into Hamilton's plans, it seems pretty awful but then, I remembered society.
The people could really screw things up and I can see why he was afraid of that. I mean, I'd be scared for my LIFE if America was a true democracy. The 2016 Election speaks for itself.
"Alexander Hamilton"
Me: *Internal screaming*
Thanks for the video. I Only have 3 questions.
1.Do you know how i can go about understanding the US budget and economy ( how does it works best, what impacts it)?
2. where do i go to compare the different policies of the president/ Ex If i wanted to compare Pres. Clinton to Pres. Reagan where would i go to compare there policies.
3. How do i keep up with the senate and what laws are being proposed and passed.
can you do a crash course on the top court cases in us history?
"If we assume the debts the union gets a new line of credit, a financial diuretic, how do you not get it? If we're aggressive and competitive, the union gets a boost, you'd rather give it a sedative?"
The issue on the table: Secretary Hamiltons plan to assume state debts and establish a national bank. Secretary Jefferson, you have the floor sir
Good insight on how our founding fathers weren't as perfect as they are often depicted
99.9% of the comments are from Hamilton fans (including me :D)
You sir are helping pass my American Civ class! Thank u for your videos and knowledge.
Hamilton was eligible to become President. The Constitution states
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. Hamilton was around during the adoption of the Constitution. He came to America in 1772 at the age of 17 and was a delegate to the Convention so he is eligible to have become President
He just published the Reynoald's Pamphlet (have you read this)

The fact that they use Trump as a thought bubble character when talking about the kinds of presidents Hamilton wanted was super eerie considering this was made in 2013
