So, I'm a 29 year old graduate student, and I'm totally hooked on John Greene's history videos. I've been marathoning through these videos. If only my K-12 education made history this entertaining!
So, im currently reading the federalist papers. Probably almost 5 years since I left high school and 7 years since I left my AP US history class when I saw this video for the first time. I highly recommend anyone that is genuinely interested in American history to please read the constitution and the federalist papers as well to get a better grasp of our government and truly appreciate how beautifully written it was. (Minus the slavery and Native American parts obviously) it's important to judge history with a non biased viewpoint and not look at it from a modern lens because you don't know what people went through at the time.

Weaponry had advanced past the musket. The puckle gun (patented in 1718) was a rapid fire weapon (in the right hands) that predates the Gatling gun. They had pepperbox pistols as early as 1790 and an array of different weaponry far more dangerous than a musket. And many Founding Fathers liked this sort of stuff. May I remind you that the cannon existed John.
"Constitutional convention" Hamilton at the constitutional convention! "I was chosen for the convention!" There as a New York Jr delegate. "Now what I'm about to say may seem indelicate."
It's kinda ignorant to suggest Hamilton wouldn't have thought that firearms would evolve, being that while they were penning the Constitution, numerous firearms were available that sought to end the Musket/Pennsylvania Long Rifle's one shot fire mechanism. From the Puckle Gun to Congress's offer of the Belton Flintlock, there were many weapons in that time that tried to jumpstart rapid fire weapon evolution. Also, James Madison confirmed that Cannons were consititutionally protected under the 2nd Amendment. A cannon then is what a drone is now.
@Jamie Owns that's the thing, nobody has the right to buy anything. You can be refused the sale of guns, you can be refused services of any kind, what can not be taken is the right to own it. Also, it's a misunderstanding among even gun-rights supporters that the right to own guns comes from the Constitution. This is not true. The way the second amendment is written, along with all the amendments, doesn't say that it is granted, it says it exists. The Constitution acknowledges that these rights exist, rather than give them. The reason for this is that a right given by government or document can be taken away by the same means.
The mystery document is from Federalist No. 29, if anyone is curious. Later, in 46, it is said that the standing army should no bigger than 4% of the size of the populace capable of bearing arms.

WillisnotFunny Oy Vay mate. We're all with you. What I love about Green's videos is that he helps us form distinct opinions about historical events. Really useful for the long essays. Also learnerator has a really good review, you might want to check it out
Really wishing this series had been made post-Hamilton because john could make ALL the references and we could all RISE UP and remember that Hamilton wrote THE OTHER 51 federalist papers and that Hamilton may have been the first one to die, but Burr's the one who paid for it. I hope you're satisfied. Also HISTORY QUESTION: did burr actually feel bad for shooting Hamilton or is that something Lin Manuel-Miranda took creative liberty on?
Well he probably regretted it, if not for emotional reasons then for social and political reasons. His life was a complete wreck after he shot Alexander Hamilton. He went from being extremely wealthy to poor, had no further political future, was tried for treason after he tried to take over mexico and was accused of trying to plot the secession of the western states, his only child and only grandson both died (well, Theodosia disappeared). Alexander Hamiltons life is certainly remarkable, but I recommend you read up on Aaron burr and Theodosia burr Alston, his daughter (well if you've listened to Hamilton you know that lol) they were both so ahead of their time
SnickersFantasy that's definitely possible, but we have no way of knowing if Burr truly regretted it for emotional reasons--we can't go back in time or in his mind, sadly lol. And the political shunning led to social isolation that became very lonely.
There's evidence that he regretted it and evidence that he didn't. He definitely at least regretted it for political reasons. 'The World Was Wide Enough' comes from an actual Burr quote; 'Had I read Sterne more and Voltaire less, I should have known the world was wide enough for Hamilton and me.' However, his intentions here are murky. Due to the texts he's referring too, he's still slyly insulting Hamilton? The dude did a lot of crazy things after Hamilton's death and he really did lose everything. It's hard not to wonder if maybe he lost his mind a little too. Possibly even he couldn't give you a straight answer. (Who am I kidding, it's Burr, his answers were about as straight as John Laurens.) One interesting titbit is that after Hamilton's death, Burr was seen stroking the face of a statue of Hamilton and he said to it 'there was the poetry.'
Ariana Tolbert Aaron Burr did not regret shooting Hamilton emotionally. His regret was how it ruined his political career. In the Musical, we are looking at it through Aaron Burr's eyes during the song "The World Was Wide Enough" in a past tense. So, in the Musical it might seem emotional, but it was only because it impacted his life and reputation greatly. Fun Fact: Alexander Hamilton Jr. (Alexander Hamilton's second son) was the lawyer for Aaron Burr's second wife when she wanted a divorce from Burr.
+Zandandido +Weena Kapunan Lord show me how to say no to this, I, don't know how to say no to this, the situation's helpless... I like how the first couple comments are from Hamilton. XD
Duels weren't called duels back then. They were called affairs of honor, and we're very rarely actually taken to the battle field. Had Hamilton backed down from the duel, he could've been marked as inhonorable, and his career literally could've come to an end. Hamilton was actually an advocate for the end of duels after the death of his son, but backing down from a duel would've put the nail in his coffin (So did taking the duel, but that's not the point.) He could've said no to the duel, but then he would've been marked as cowardly, and his career would be over, and he probably thought they could both walk away with their lives.

John: You know how Alexander Hamilton died? GUNSHOT!!! Me: TOO SOON JOHN. (I mean it's been like 212 years but the Hamilton soundtrack make sme feel things HE HAS BEEN DEAD FOR 200 YEARS I SHOULD NOT BE SAD BUT I AM.)
+Grace Nern I keep seeing you pop up everywhere in the comment section because we're both watching a bunch of Hamilton videos and now you're here so I think this means we're soulmates.
I never understood why Crash Course sometimes resorted to cheap referential humour (ie. that guy whose name I don't remember from the Jersey Shore popping up briefly upon the mention of New Jersey) until we watched this episode today in world history. I understand that most high schoolers aren't interested in history, but that pop culture stuff is what caught their attention. So I understand now. Thank you for making Crash Course enjoyable for everyone, not just the nerds who are unironically interested, but the apathetic kids as well to the extent that maybe they'll remember the lesson more than if it was read from a humourless textbook. No one but me laughed at the foreshadowing filter though and that I'll never understand.
"A little rebellion now and then is a good thing..." -Jefferson Not very surprising. XDD Who else only watched this video just hear "Alexander Hamilton"?
Alique Williams Lol John Green has tried repeatedly to emphasize that there shouldn't be one "ultimate message" from any lesson of history, instead we should take the ENTIRE lesson as a message collectively, and not to mention the number of times he tried to emphasize that history can't simply be divided into "Bad"s and "Good"s.
Cat Riddle It doesn't matter if he says that. If you actually look at his videos objectively, like this one, there's a clear message and bias he's sending.
I need to say I am impressed by how you do not pass out trying to tell us everything in one breath... You speak so freaking fast!! But, Dear John, I love your videos.
Love your channel. Not only do you do a good job conveying the content, but you do an even better job at using good cutaways and popup flash animations to make it actually entertaining. I actually laughed out loud at the rich people doing something comment and skrillex in the background. Great job
If one good thing comes from my business law class it will be this channel. So entertaining, well thought out, and informative. Thank you for all the hard work making this.
Hey John.... thanks for inserting your personal opinions into our history lesson... appreciate the unbiased approach. Signed, ~A Sarcastic Fan of Crash Course
Things you should know after the video: •Goveneur Morris wrote the 1st article •The Founding Fathers are rich •Delegates and The Founding Fathers signed the Constitution •The Revolutionary War happened in 1775 •Smaller governments wanted slaves to be free And that’s all!
Kavisha Chandraratne im not much of a fan of musicals... and i've seen parts of it and it doesn't appeal all that much to me. I do really like the emphasis on Alexander Hamilton's beliefs on freedom and liberty though
I would understand why everyone would say slow down if you were only hearing Crash Course once but remember you can always rewind to hear it again, not only that but Green is subliminally making everyone smarter by training the hardcore CC fans to think faster than they used too. Not saying you are stupid, just saying that the way he educates is for you benefit.
As others may have pointed out before, the 3/5ths count for slaves was a measure to limit the disproportionate congressional power slave states would have following censuses, an imperfect but by no means exclusionary reality.
Loved your presentation, Hamilton was well aware of incredible firepower at the time of the musket. Canon, light canon, bombardier, mortar and many other weapons were widely known at the time Hamilton pushed for an armed society equal to a standing army. I find it interesting the myth that the framers believed the world would remain fighting with muskets continues to persist. The diversity and capability of weapons both light and heavy at the time of the American Revolution is generally impressive to those who believe in the musket myth. Thanks for the entertaining and informative presentation, I look forward to more

I may have been humming Non-Stop throughout a good portion of this video... Hey, John, have you heard Hamilton yet?
He has, and he loves it.
+Kyber Serafino (wherethesidewalkends) i had the cabinet battle #1 in my head.
+Karis Daae wait for the t jeffs episode
I KNOW RIGHT
as soon as he said Hamilton I started fangirling
Why am I fangirling over a founding father
SockBadger 24601 i worry about us sometimes...
Thank u John for teaching me throughout all of my schooling been with u since I was 15 now 22
10:00 "John Jay got sick after writing five, James Madison wrote 29, Hamilton wrote THE OTHER FIFTY-ONE!!!!!!!!"
How do you write like your running out of time...
Writing at night like your running out of time...
Omllll I just screamed that lollll
John: You know how Alexander Hamilton died? GUNSHOT!!!
Me: TOO SOON JOHN. (I mean it's been like 212 years but the Hamilton soundtrack make sme feel things HE HAS BEEN DEAD FOR 200 YEARS I SHOULD NOT BE SAD BUT I AM.)
+Grace Nern I keep seeing you pop up everywhere in the comment section because we're both watching a bunch of Hamilton videos and now you're here so I think this means we're soulmates.
+Grace Nern I was thinking, "Does Grace show up in every video mentioning hamilton?" Yes. Yes you do.
I am too! You're not alone! Lin-Manuel Miranda, why must you give us such great joy and then cause us such great pain?
Grace Nern Or as Steven Colbert said: Why am I sitting here crying over Alexander Hamilton?
Gross sobbing😭😢😭😢
"A little rebellion now and then is a good thing..."
-Jefferson
Not very surprising. XDD
Who else only watched this video just hear "Alexander Hamilton"?
You don’t even know what Conservatism is, lol.
OKAY EVERYONE LETS ADMIT 5:59 WAS WHAT WE WERE ALL WAITING FOR.
You must be psychic.
Sherry Watson I
All these years later I can come back to this video and it is still awesome and educational. Timeless.
God bless the Constitution and God bless our founding fathers.
+joe smith Amen
I have one question. Why is Skrillex at the Continental Congress?!?!?!
lol
That’s what I noticed lmao
(studying for midterms)
ikr
+Zane Millecchia SAME
Zane Millecchia. Studying for the History test tomorrow, TOMORROW!
The ultimate message of this video: small federal government and low taxes = bad. Big federal government and high taxes = good.
Cat Riddle Yeah...he can't help to hide his bias towards big european style government in this video.
Rick Apocalypse I feel like you pretended to read my comment but you actually didn't.
+Alique Williams well if the government is strong, then it isn't powerful, and then the United States isn't powerful either.
Cat Riddle It doesn't matter if he says that. If you actually look at his videos objectively, like this one, there's a clear message and bias he's sending.
Anyone here last day for the 2020 APUSH DBQ?
@Allison Lundberg yes
I need to say I am impressed by how you do not pass out trying to tell us everything in one breath... You speak so freaking fast!! But, Dear John, I love your videos.
I like to imagine Lin Manuel-Miranda watched this when he was writing Hamilton and needed a refresher
There's so much shade in this video. I love it.
who else is here because of A Push?
+Nancy Huber XD
+Nancy Huber RIP Nacy. You will be remembered.
+LeafCrate the hell is that
+LeafCrate *raises hand violently*
ME 😂
Anytime I hear "Hamilton" I feel a rush of happiness surging within me.
Hey John.... thanks for inserting your personal opinions into our history lesson... appreciate the unbiased approach. Signed, ~A Sarcastic Fan of Crash Course
2:24 Ohio joke 9 years before its popularity, oh the timelessness of CrashCourse.
Everything is legal in New Jersey
Including killing the former treasury secretary.
If more Treasury Secretaries were killed, perhaps the world would be a better place - who knows?
Not pumping your own gas!!!
wow lol..
I honestly learn more from your videos than I do from my college professor.
I don't have an AP class nor do I have an APUSH exam, this is literally just my textbook for American History
I don't even have a test or anything, I just thoroughly enjoy these videos
Button up that shirt, John. This is an educational video, not a porno.
Everyone is talking about AP exams and im over here trying to pass 8th grade
update: i failed the test
Bruh how did you fail 8th grade US history?
JayThePsychoi omg no! i have mine tomorrow
lol I'm sorry.
What an idiot
F
Things you should know after the video:
•Goveneur Morris wrote the 1st article
•The Founding Fathers are rich
•Delegates and The Founding Fathers signed the Constitution
•The Revolutionary War happened in 1775
•Smaller governments wanted slaves to be free
And that’s all!
those are like the most useless parts of the video lmao
I thought the chalkboard said “We Be People” at first..
I Be Person
3:40 rise up
when you're living on your knees
you rise up
Tell your brother that he's gotta rise up
Tell your sister that she's gotta rise up!
When are these colonies gonna rise up?
I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory
If I see it coming, do I run or do I let it be?
* slams fists on table * MORE HAMILTON
less gunfire at hamilton, then!
If pros and cons are opposite, what is the opposite of progress?
+Enna Silkov Congress
+Enna Silkov regress...?
+Gideon Tan missed the joke
+Enna Silkov That hilarious :)
Guye Pursunn Oh snap. Sorry, lol, that's funny
"And shoot Alexander Hamilton"
*A A R O N B U R R S I R*
I finally get why everyone is freaking out every time the guy in the video mentions Alexander Hamilton... Now, WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE THAT MUSICAL?
Bryan JR it's on UA-cam right now. watch it before it gets deleted.
Kavisha Chandraratne im not much of a fan of musicals... and i've seen parts of it and it doesn't appeal all that much to me. I do really like the emphasis on Alexander Hamilton's beliefs on freedom and liberty though
@@bryanjr5745 i hope you also liked the emphasis on how much of an idiot he was
its... kinda good?
I would understand why everyone would say slow down if you were only hearing Crash Course once but remember you can always rewind to hear it again, not only that but Green is subliminally making everyone smarter by training the hardcore CC fans to think faster than they used too. Not saying you are stupid, just saying that the way he educates is for you benefit.
Sage N Rage its normal speed tho, i dont know what all the complains about speed are about
"That government is best which governs least." -Henry David Thoreau
Hamilton wanting a life term lmao
5:09 "more than half had an education"
*my dude,thats half right there*
Of course, Skrillex was a delegate. Why not? XD
I almost thought I was the only one who saw that! 4:42
As others may have pointed out before, the 3/5ths count for slaves was a measure to limit the disproportionate congressional power slave states would have following censuses, an imperfect but by no means exclusionary reality.
I never thought John Green would ever explain the American Constitution to me. Well I’m glad he did!
Thanks for the entertaining and informative presentation, I look forward to more
I have an idea; contact me!
*john mentions alexander hamilton*
*my ears perk up*
*i jump up onto my desk and begin to sing*
ALEXANDER HAMILTON
WE ARE WAITING IN THE WINGS FOR YOU
YOU COULD NEVER BACK DOWN
YOU NEVER LEARNED TO TAKE YOUR TIIIIIME
OH ALEXANDER HAMILTON
luca me too
the thought bubble brought him up and I want to start rapping so bad
and when he talked about the Federalist papers I was like
AND HAMILTON WORTE THE OTHER FIFTY ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to watch this video for my Intro to Political Science class. I love the way he uses humor it really makes you pay attention and makes learning this information fun! Great video!
Don’t worry AP exam people I am Canadian and have no incentive to watch this series and it is still incredibly engaging and interesting. So you are in good hands
“The senate was created to never pass anything”
*LMAO* 😂🤣
The US is a most amazing and extraordinary nation with rock solid foundations. God bless the USA.
That's the power of 'MURICA
yes, u should be grateful for all these glory and rock solid foundations came from very, very shaddy, or down right unjust deeds.
if this is the lesson you learned from this series, you weren't paying attention
Coda Mission if this is what you swallowed from all that gushed forth from this pillock's tiny platonist phallus then YOU don't understand human history or human nature
I feel like "Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, wrote a series of 85 essays that are together known as The Federalist Papers" could have been "Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay (but mostly Alexander Hamilton)"
josie o lol
My teacher sucks. He has us do busy work all day, and springs tests on us like, "Guys there's a test tomorrow so do your 50 page chapter outlines to study for it." So I resorted to the faithful and diligent John Green. I'll let you know if I ace my Constitution test Mr. Green.
