The sculptor of the unveiled statue on Heroes Day was played by Tom Perrotta (the author of the book that the show is based on/joint creator of this show).
I can completely understand the way the disappearance of 2% has deeply affected these people. If those people had died it would have been terribly sad but most would be able to eventually move on with their lives. Disappearing though? Will they come back, will more of us disappear someday, why did it happen? Too many unanswered questions for the people who are left. The kids enacting nihilistic behavior at the party is a good example of how things could go. Why care about the future if you might not have one? Just do whatever to at least feel something.

Great reaction! I have seen the whole series (3 seasons) and I agree that that the show hasn't been recognized enough, particularly for the writing and the acting.
Similarly, "Station Eleven" from last year suffers from the same lack of attention. Fortunately, Damon Lindeloff's name being attached to a project doesn't seem to discourage HBO! Same with David Simon...
I had read Tom Perrota's novel "The Leftovers" before seeing the series, and what impressed me from the pilot episode is how so many of the themes from the novel were introduced. The novel is actually quite short so the way the series developed its themes is impressive. (Of course, it helps that the novelist was involved in the writing of the series... though that's not always the case.)

This is one of the best shows made in the last twenty years. And it’s actually superior to the novel - a very rare thing. Season one takes a while to get into its groove but season two is probably the best season of any TV show I’ve ever seen. Lindelof really shows off what he learned from Lost - this is the more mature, superior of the two- although I don’t think anyone would disagree if I said Lost was more fun.

Another comment: I always found it disturbing how inconsequential 50% of the population disappearing in the MCU felt, and it's because I saw this show first. In this show, only 2% - 140 million around the world - disappeared into thin air, and humanity just...broke.

This is Damon Lindeloff's baby. Along with Mimi Leder. And Carlton Cuse's son wrote one or two eps. However, S1 is by Perrotta's book. Then Damon got to do his thing with the rest.

I'll admit, it took me a few tries to get into this show. In 2020 I finally decided to dive in and I don't regret it. To me, The Leftovers is a show that feels like it could take place in the world of LOST, but it's a completely different type of show. Just soak it in and don't think too hard about how it's playing out. It all pays off and sticks with you.

  • @chromatos7428

It's funny - when the show premiered there was a lot of criticism about the premise of the show - how could losing only 2% of the world's population disrupt society so much?
In the last 2 years, I think we've answered that question.

    • @kuhpunkt
      @kuhpunkt 2 роки тому +2

I don't remember this being a point of criticism... but if it was, it's stupid. It's not about the amount of people. As Neil said, it's the unknown factor. It's that they vanished - not died. That would be terrifying.

My favorite show. Tells a complete, 3 season-long story. It’s very heavy, but a beautiful narrative about loss/grief, faith, science, love, belief. The writing and acting, tremendous.
If you follow tv production teams and creators you can connect the dots from Lost to The Leftovers to Maniac, Watchmen, and recently, Station 11. All top quality shows worthy of attention.

When I first started this show I also was coming from "I want to see what Lindelof is doing after Lost," and I must have watched the first 3 or 4 episodes a few times each on different occasions as an attempt to really dig into it, and then kept falling off and not continuing. Not for lack of interest or quality mind you; I just kept failing to keep at it and make time despite finding the premise fascinating and feeling engrossed by what I'd watched. I finally buckled down in early 2020 when the pandemic hit and was staying home full-time for months, and was able to binge through the entire series. I was SO GLAD I did. It's an INCREDIBLE show, and I'm really excited to get to revisit it here!
Also, the recurring main theme that plays out with the piano is one of my favorite pieces of TV music! It brings such a perfect vibe to so much of what the Leftovers world is coping with while being so minimal.

Think on this. It's not just the disapearance. Ot's the 'will it happen again' that colors all your interpersonal relationships. It creates a deep seated neurosis of 'will this person be around and for how long' 'Will I be abondonned'...

Funny, I just the other day told this story. When this show aired, I recorded it on my dvr, and I kept noticing that while I really really loved this show and there were moments of brilliance from some of the directors and writers, I seemed to always leave it to watch last, of all of that weeks dvr'd shows, and I wondered why, if I loved it so much, why I always left it to last. I ended up realizing that it was because this show is dark, depressing, has a sombre tone. It is not a feel good show, at least for me, it is hard to explain. Great writing and directing excite me, and this show has that, but the tone is so sombre that when choosing what to watch, of the shows that need to be watched, I always chose it last. I guess this really says more about me than it does about The Leftovers. I think this show is excellent and I feel you will appreciate it as well-

It's ratings as in critical reviews. It's been on many best of lists. It's a critical darling.
And Lindelof said that it wouldn't have been more than 4 seasons anyway.

@@kuhpunkt It was underrated by the viewing public, who obviously didn't watch it. That's a type of rating itself, and is even worse when you consider how much the critics DID like it. I think you can say that fairly reasonably. The lead in to this show was literally Game of Thrones, it was on right before the Leftovers, and the viewership was still non-existent.
And yeah, I wouldn't have thought it could go much more than 4 or 5 seasons, but the point is that HBO "canceled" it by saying s3 was their last season.

@@eschatological But the people who watched it, usually loved it. The amount of people who watch it has nothing to do with it.
"According to Metacritic's aggregate of critics' decade-end lists, The Leftovers was the highest ranked show of the 2010s."
I barely ever hear a bad word about the show. People are raving about it.

Loved this show, late to the party on your viewing of this but I’m jazzed to see what you think.
As an aside, I gotta say, either due to your staunch heterosexuality or professionalism I’m somewhat impressed by your lack of comment on that sweatpants ferret Justin Theroux’s character is smuggling around. Let’s see if that restraint can carry throughout the series lol

Neil, if you enjoy Paterson Joseph that's yet another reason you need to watch Peep Show. His role as David Mitchell's boss is pure comedy perfection. He's also very funny on That Mitchell and Webb Look.

So this is just my personal experience and thoughts about this Show, don't hate me for it 😉
I wasn't sure I watched it, but after I saw the Reaction of you, Neil, I'm sure I did - but... I couldn't even tell you anything about it because I totally forgot about it. It's no way close capturing as LOST was and during the 3 Seasons it wasn't getting better for me - as I said, I saw this Show 1 or 2 Years ago and I forgot all of it.🙃
I'll continue watching your Reaction of the Show, maybe I'll learn a thing or two and try watching it again.👍

It's a lot different from Lost.
Lost has a "happiness" element that you just don't get here. It's really a heavier show - and I love it.
