Hi James...at 12:54, after Bruno Kirby compares marriage to eating only your single favorite cereal for breakfast every day, you responded by saying that is what love and marriage is all about. This is obviously an off the cuff remark, and by no means do I want to correct you, but I would like to suggest that Kirby's cereal comparison is actually false...because people change while cereals do not. I feel certain that what you really would have said if you had though about it in that moment, is that people learn and grow and change, while cereals do not...and that marriage is about learning and growing and changing together. Anyway, I always have fun watching your videos, and you also make me want to think about things and engage with people...so thank you.💯
You have seen Billy Crystal before in The Princess Bride. He was Miracle Max who made the chocolate covered miracle pill to bring farmboy back to life.
Another channel I love promotes these chairs as well. Looks great, James!
1) the opening scene is "the running of the bulls" which is annual event in pampalona spain 2) williams crystal and goldberg have a VERY LONG association with comic releif an organization dedicated to fighting homelessness 3) jack palance won an oscar for his role in this movie
Here's a crazy bit of trivia; Jack Palance after several nominations for best actor finally won an Oscar for Best Supporting actor at 70 and did 3 one arm push-ups on stage. He had done many tough guy roles and westerns but also played Dracula in 1974 as well as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The guy was awesome!
Jack Palance, who played Curly in the film, took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. And after winning his award, he surprised everyone by performing 20 pushups with one hand.
AND he hosted "Ripley's Believe It or Not" back in the 80's! 😊
I remember that 💯
Loved Ripley’s! I had forgotten about that. I mostly remember Jack Palance from the first Batman.
Actually it was only three, but damn it's a feat anyway!
City Slickers 2 is also great!!! Can't wait for you to watch it!
You may have already seen Billy Crystal in THE Princess Bride as Mad Max, but did not know it because he was in heavy makeup. He was the healer who said TO Blaaaath
Miracle Max*
Now THAT is a noble cause!
“Think it’ll work?”
“It’d take a miracle!”
He fun stormin the castle!
the song they are singing bringing in the cattle is the theme from the show Bonanza
The pretty blond lady was played by Helen Slater, star of such classic '80s films as "Supergirl" and "The Legend of Billie Jean". The the store clerk side-girl was played by Yeardley Smith, voice of Lisa Simpson, and ALSO in "The Legend of Billie Jean".
And As Good As It Gets.
Yeardley Smith was also in an early FOX show called Herman’s Head that was hilarious.
OMG! THAT is Supergirl?!? I loved that movie as a kid! And I loved this movie… I never put them together before! 🤯
She was also in an underrated movie called 12:01 . . . . a Groundhog Day sort of flick. Predating Groundhog Day.
Helen Slater also played Kara Zor-El’s/Kara Danvers’ adoptive mom in the CW Supergirl series.
A great romantic comedy with Billy Crystal is When Harry Met Sally. You saw Billy shortly in old man makeup. In the movie Princess Bride as Miracle Max. And if you have seen the animated film Monsters, Inc., he was the voice of Mike Wazowski.
His cameo in This Is Spinal Tap was pretty good, too.
Billy Crystal’s son is played by a young Jake Gyllenhaal, who if you haven’t seen yet, you will at some point.
In fact I highly recommend October Sky! Sweet coming of age flick based on a true story.
Also "Prince of Persia" for action or "The Day After Tomorrow" for natural disaster fun.
Holy shit, I didn't even recognize him when I first saw it. He was so young!
YES!!! I love October Sky!!! 💙💙💙
Jack Palance, who played Curly, was also Grissom in "Batman" 1989.
Thank you so much for choosing this. I was a kid when this movie came out and I don't think I've seen it in decades. Got real warm and fuzzies from this.
Norman!
Running Scared with Gregory Hines was a great movie. You should watch that one!
Best buddy cop movie ever.
Another great Billy Crystel movie is When Harry met Sally. Very cute
Forget Paris is good too
I saw this in the theater with my dad. It's one of those movies that crosses different generations.
Comic relief! That's the fundraiser they all did. Robin, Whoopi and Billy
The head of the ranch was the CO of the radio guys in Good morning Vietnam and Bernie Casey was Lt Steve. "Oh Frenchy..oh Lt Steve"
Oh yeah, thanks... Nice one more I should have known.
The first I've seen react to this movie. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I once rode a horse and quickly found out that all of that bouncing can make one VERY motion sick! Thanks for sharing this.
Please please watch the sequel. It's just as good. They are 2 of my favourite movies ever. ABSOLUTELY LOVED YOUR REACTION
Thanks Stacey, I appreciate you! Added to my list
@@AwesomeUSMovies your laugh is sooooo infectious iv seen city slickers so many times but watching u appreciate it made it so much better
@@AwesomeUSMovies Terrific!
Billy Crystal is an iconic comedian who has been around for over four decades. Yes Billy Crystal Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg hosted comic relief for over a decade to help the homeless. Is also been a actor in many films. Is a sequel to this film that is just as funny. Enjoying watching you on your journey
Curly, ( Jack Parlance ) in this movie reminds me of my grandfather who was the toughest real cowboy I ever knew. Tough as an old piece of Iron and leather but a heart of gold and the kindest and smartest person I ever knew. Professor of science and mathematics at Utah State University. He claimed every job he ever had, involved milking cows
There is City Slickers II The legend of Curly's gold. Been a few years since I've seen, it but just as good.
Billy Crystal hosted the Oscars one year and he rode on to the stage on his horse from City Slickers (he bought the horse and it's name was Beechnut).
The charity show was called Comic Relief
This film is brilliant. Jack Palance was born for this role. And when I leave this mortal coil ... going out sitting on a rock watching the sunrise is about as great as it could get. :)
RIP Jack Palance and Bruno Kirby.
Did anyone notice that Billy Crystal's son in the movie(Danny Robbins)is a very young Jake Gyllenhaal? And you saw Billy Crystal make a pill in the movie The Princess Bride.
For comedy/western, you may also like _Cat Ballou_ (1965), _The Three Amigos_ (1986).
It’s funny you recognized Marv from home alone when he was screaming lol
Yup, that did it
This film has in my opinion the most important scene in cinematic history, the key to the secret to life..... seriously, the best advice on the subject I’d ever heard, Jack Palance’s “One Thing” speech👌
I forgot how much I loved these movies! Awesome reaction! ❤
Appreciate that thanks
Loved this one as a youngster. I still use the "puppy with two peters" line. It's iconic if you ask me.....
FYI.......Billy Crystal was Miracle Max in "The Princess Bride" So you have seen him on the channel.
Comic Relief was the fundraiser.
Jack Palance, the one who played Curly, won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for this role. He came onto the stage at the award show and did one hand push ups after he accepted it.
Great chair !!! Such a good movie. Great reaction !!!
You were thinking of Comic Relief.
Phil is also the older Kevin Arnold voice narrator in the show The Wonder Years!
Me and my dad would watch these movies every time they came on television there classic
Great reaction as always. I forgot what a fun movie this was, been a LONG time since I last saw it. Holds up, good time. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
I miss when Billy Crystal was in almost every single movie released. My favorite Billy Crystal movie of all time is Forget Paris.
Couple more fun casting notes, Cookie was played by great character actor Tracey Walter, probably best known for his role as Bob the Goon in the 1989 Batman. And Billy Crystal's daughter Lindsay plays opposite Jake Gyllenhaal as daughter Holly Robbins. Love this movie so much. Great reaction.
Fun Fact:
Billy Crystal is famously one of the biggest Yankee fans in Hollywood, hence his true Mickey Mantle story. He agreed to wear Mets gear in this movie bc they donated to his charity.
You should check out Billy Crystal and Robert De Niro in Analyze This. Us New Yorkers love it and I’m sure you would too.
Added thanks for the facts
I’m just happy to see you survived all the tornadoes!!
i *NEED* to recommend you
*Analyze This* (1999) / Starring *Robert De Niro* & *Billy Crystal*
*Analyze That* (2002) / Sequel *EVEN BETTER* !
BONUS TRACK : *Meet the Parents* (2000) /Starring *Ben Stiller* , *Owen Wilson* & *Robert De Niro*
Love this movie. Lots of great quotes. My wife and I like to tack on “and don’t do drugs” after we say something completely unrelated and there’s a pregnant pause.
I was 16 working in a movie theatre when this came out- I remember an elderly couple who felt so offended, storming out of the theatre and demanding their money back after the scene with the birth of a calf. I had grown up on a farm and wondered what the hullabaloo was about.
They were offended by that... Wow grow up already
Coincidentally, we just had two lambs born yesterday (twins). This film came just at the right time.
Also, we had to help once a few years ago. We were able to save the mother, thankfully, though it took a vet to intervene.
@@AwesomeUSMovies One of the 1st things I noticed when I went from the farm to the city. Farm children understand sex, pregnancy, birth & death a lot better than city children do. They see it everywhere, every year. & Things like the birth of a calf is just another day & not the least bit shocking.
@5:38 wow that's a young 'Jake Gyllenhaal', I remember watching this movie as a kid, we're basically the same age 0_0.........
You need to see When Harry Met Sally.
It’s been a long time since I’ve last seen this film. I’d forgotten a lot of it, but watching your reaction brought back how much I enjoyed it. As soon as the scene with best day/worst day began, I immediately remembered that one of them had a truly heartbreaking response that ended up being the same day. Thanks for not editing it and including all of Bruno Kirby’s gut wrenching line delivery. He was really a great actor who died too young at age 57. I loved him in When Harry Met Sally (another wonderful Billy Crystal comedy) and The Freshman, with Matthew Broderick and the great Marlon Brando.
Great reaction. From those of us that have been around for a while you can put Billy Crystal in the column marked, National Treasure. A large body of work & all of it great.
The song you heard & know, but don't know, is the theme song from a very popular western TV show called, Bonanza! Which ran from 1959 to 1973.
Thanks Tim
Other great Western comedies you should see: Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles starring Gene Wilder, Rustler's Rhapsody starring Andy Griffith and John Wayne's son as the villains, Back to the Future III, City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold, and The Three Amigos, starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Chevy Chase. Other great Billy Crystal movies are When Harry Met Sally. . . and The Princess Bride. If you'd like to see a bad Billy Crystal movie, watch Joan Rivers' Rabbit Test. About the only other thing I've ever seen Jack Palance in was playing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (he was good & creepy).
The theme from Bonanza.
Never knew Jake Gyllenhaal was in this. And the voice actress for Bart and Lisa Simpson.
He's a Midnight Cowboy! I'm walking here!
The third friend with the mustache was polka king guy in Good Morning Vietnam. Billy Crystal was also Miracle Max in The Princess Bride
I love this movie! The second one is good but not as good as this one. So glad you checked it out.
This movie is so iconic 😂
I love this movie so much and the sequel is just as funny these are great movies
His other friend is played by Bruno Kirby from "The Godfather Part II" as the young Clemenza. The checkout girl is actress Yeardley Smith, who is the voice of Lisa Simpson.
Did you ever watch The Princess Bride? Because if you did than you have seen a movie with Billy Crystal. But definitely watch When Harry Met Sally.
Billy Crystal = WHEN HARRY MET SALLY or MONSTERS INC.
This reminds me of another great but lesser known movie called "Australia". Not a comedy like this, but shares the formula of a group of non-cattle people driving cattle against all odds. BEAUTIFULLY done movie.
7:25 - What amazes me is that he didn't drop any hors d'oeuvres from that tray.
"Hellooooo" 🤣 Never gets old. My friends and I still say it to this day.
Also, you have seen Billy Crystal in a movie before. He played Miracle Max in The Princess Bride.
that fundraiser show was called, whoopi needs more money
I always enjoy your reactions and hearing you laugh always gets me tickled.
You have the best laugh and I can't wait for you to see City Slickers 2.
It's my favorite. It's funnier too.
I can't tell you how many 100s of times I've seen City stickers part 2.
However I have not seen the first one as much.
It's rare when a sequel is better than the first movie.
But in my opinion, the sequel is way better. So I hope you watch it soon.
One of the funniest scenes in the sequel happens between Billy Crystal and the one you know as Marv from Home Alone.
ny is awesome but yeah to many people. live there for 10 awesome years. move to florida because I thought change was good. I had family near. but now cant wait to go back to NY.
Looking forward to an axe farmer's perspective on this movie, knowing the proper name to call things like what you tie rope to on the front of a saddle.
I was pretty close
To great examples of comedy and westerns from older movies would me McClintock with John Wayne and Support Your Local Sheriff with James Garner. Two of my favorites.
Great reaction James! I knew you would love this!
I did!
This movie and the sequel are both very good, shame that a third one never happened.
the guy at 5.30 is in the movie mr mom
I remember when this came out.👍♥️City Slickers 2 is great as well, must watch it😆
Billy’s Movie with Meg Ryan also with his friend in this movie and Carrie Fisher, (Princess Leia in the original Star Wars movie). R.I.P., Carrie♥️👍. I love Love WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, you will too.
Great reaction, everyone loved this. City Slickers 2 is just as fun.
"Ciry Slickers" was a ground-breaking film that completely captured the pubic's attention and moved us.
I hope you watch part 2 of this, it's really good also
I think this is an instance where I like the sequel more. Love City Slickers, but part two is awesome.
I just realized that Ed is Lt Hauk from Good Morning Vietnam. I knew he looked familiar. The theme song they were humming was to the show Bonanza.
And Billy Crystal's best friend in When Harry Met Sally. He was the unforgettable limo driver in This is Spinal Tap. Etc etc.
Sadly, he passed away at only 57 from leukemia.
Man, I love this movie. The second one is way better IMO. Hope you watch it soon! :)
You said you want some kid movies, have you seen "Short Circuit," no 5 is alive! There are 2 movies.
Is the knob/handle on the saddle a dally, or is that how you put the rope on it?
The music they were singing badly was the theme from Bonanza.
12:32.
Probably a "strike anywhere" match.
Not sure about the accuracy of striking it on your face, but the green tipped ones do light pretty quick on a rubber sole shoe.
Word you were looking for is "horn" for where you tie the lasso on the saddle.
Yeah
You may have already put this together, but the tall guy (with the great scene at the party) was one of the Wet Bandits in Home Alone :)
Oh, haaa. Three minutes after I wrote this, you figured it out! Haaa.
They mention the movie "Red River" in this movie. If you're ever interested, it does star John Wayne (one of the classic Western actors) and Montgomery Clift, as mentioned. The American Film Institute (AFI) ranked it as the fifth-greatest Western film of all time.
Yeah, I put a clip from that movie in the reaction
@@AwesomeUSMovies Oops, I missed that!
"Hot brown and lots of it"
Billy Crystal ended up buying the horse because he loved him so much 💓 Beach Nut
Buno Kirby who played Ed was allergic to horses and had to take shots every morning. That the main reason he didnt return for the sequel.
Billy Crystal along with Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams hosted Comic Relief.
the song they sing as they bring in the herd was the theme from the western tv series Bonanza.
Jack Palance won a best supporting oscar for his role. When he won, Jack did one arm push ups and quipped I crap bigger than Billy Crystal. Billy hosted the Oscars that year,
I'm glad you liked this movie and it was OK but personally I love the second city slickers movie more.
Helloooooo 😆
Great Reaction! Fave movie of mine. Please watch Billy Crystal and Bruno Kirby as his best friend in the classic Rom Com with Meg Ryan.. ' When Harry Met Sally' !!!
Great reaction. think that the Billy, Robin & Whoopi show was Comic Relief. Billy Crystal made a cameo in the movie “The Princess Bride.”
Yeah Comic Relief that was it. thanks
6:01 Hey, it's the Prince of Persia himself, little Jake Gyllenhaal!
interesting to see a young Jake Gyllenhaal. He needs to be in more roles.
Billy crystal, have fun storming the castle, you think it’ll work, and take a miracle. Princess bride
Fun Friday release!!
Yeah!
I remember watching this as a kid and just freaked out in the beginning when the mom said he was 39 years old....im about to be 39 this year...wow, i am now the age of the parents 😂 Definitely check out City Slickers 2, i always liked it better!
I'll be 39 in August.
The man ate bacon at every meal. You can't do that!
Comic relief was the fundraiser you are thinking of
You should definitely check out city slickers 2
Okay kids.. animated for the show. Get on it. We have the technology.
Yes!!! Great movie!!! Norman 🐮
Love that cow.... But I'd feed him till I could harvest him. Lol
I think the point of the running with the bulls is to see how close you can let the bull get to you without getting gored. I think the tomato festival sounds way more fun and way less chance of dying or being out of breath.
Interesting casting notes:
Longtime star Charles Bronson, who appeared in Westerns and war movies as sort of a gruff leading man, was originally offered the role of Curly, but turned it down because he didn't want to play a character who died.
Additionally, Daniel Stern (yes, it is Marv from Home Alone) was a late replacement for the role of Phil. Originally, Rick Moranis was cast, but withdrew before filming started because his wife was dying of cancer, and she did unfortunately pass away February of 1991. This film was released four months later.
and the first movie Jake Gyllenhaal was ever in!
Been years since I’ve seen this!
That is a young Jake Gyllenhaal playing the son.
I remember when this movie came out, supposedly Billy Crystal really did deliver Norman, and he wouldn't leave his side. Theres a sequel that is also worth it 👍
the apartment / condo that size they live would cost a astronomical amount of money for rent. No way he could afford something that large working in marketing for a radio station. The wife must be a lawyer or something....
