I grew up watching Iris sing along with her family members at our small Pentecostal church in Norwalk, California back in the late 1960's, so I take special pride in the work she's done over the years. I think this song is my favorite.
I remember the first time I ever heard this song. I was driving down I-95 near White Marsh MD listening to Prairie Home Companion when she started singing the song. I literally pulled over and stopped my vehicle so I could listen to the song. I was FLOORED to put it mildly! The purity of her voice combined with the earnestness of her songwriting is something to behold. Even now, whenever I listen to this song it sends a shiver down my spine.
77 years old, a singer myself (classical and opera), a bluegrass fan for decades...and I only just heard of Iris Dement . Caught her on the soundtrack of True Grit. Never before had a voice pierce right past every filter of musical experience into my heart. What a gift! Her song, her voice, her soul...wow!
Thought I'd tell you're not alone. I too am in my 70's and playing and still performing mostly Bluegrass and this week is my first exposure to Iris. She and Nancy Griffith("Love at the Five and Dime"), voices are very close. Now I have two favorites to listen too. Yes, I'd love to do a performance with Iris. :)

Many 'Scientists' are not really rational, but support their materialist viewpoint quite irrationally! But, failing that, we have our own being to delve into... I think we all know it unconsciously, I would wager... But it may be deeply buried..! Some of my own evidence, and I am no 'New ager', or Buddhist/Hindu, is that past lives have come tome when I was working on current problems... I was not and still don't seek them out! Wonderful show, wonderful song, and here delivered with so much personality. Love that the band is just enjoying playing together and having a good time, like a Saturday night party.

All of these artists are the best at their game. And yet we see they are in awe of Iris. Especially, Jay Ungar seems to be playing a layer of love on this song. The year of this video, Iris was the musician you should have seen and experienced. Her shows were visceral and raw, emotive and unparalleled...Etched on the memory eternal.
Her songs just dig into your heart and stay there forever. The videos are poetic and priceless. I can see my grandmother walking around that exact kitchen in her 80s.
I hate to sound like a troll but the main point behind everyone disappearing was that they ended up in alternate universe in which the other part of the population was not present, so no one really disappeared....

Quite simply, without hyperbole, this is my favorite and the most emotionally compelling video on UA-cam. When Iris was in this phase of her career, she was intense, vulnerable, unbelievably powerful; and even unhappy, nervous and disturbed. She would sit in her dressing room alone for 30 minutes after a show, composing herself. She's the only artist I ever saw that made grizzled bikers blubber :) What a genius!
Little did she know, 23 years later this would become the theme song of the most somber, depressing, thought-provoking, and amazing show on television. Funny how things work.
Season 2 and 3 were less depressing than Season 1. Season 3 is a riot. Laughs for days. A Frenchman submariner uses the power of yoga to launch a nuke at a South Pacific island because he thinks a demon egg resides there. International Assassin remix is funny "We fucked up with Nora", ya think?
I find Dark, The Wire and True Detective to be more depressing and somber. S2 though was one of the best seasons of any show, that's for sure. But it wasn't nearly as somber and bleak as S1. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of the intro credits as well

A remarkably talented and very beautiful Artist, first heard many years ago on Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor (National Public Radio). Iris captures something so heartfelt and radiantly natural in her voice and style. A lovely blend of Country and Folk elements interwoven in perfect harmony.
This is one of the most profound wonderful songs ever written. I love her voice and all the stringed instruments ! Props to Natalie Merchant for mentioning this song in the 90's which put it on my radar.

This version of "Let The Mystery Be" was the opening theme music for some episodes of the 2014 mini-series "The Leftovers". I had never hear the song before, so I searched for it on UA-cam. I love the song because it reinforces my belief that life and death are mysteries which may or may not ever be solved.
I love this song too. It makes me laugh, especially since I was raised Catholic. It reminds me of a saying from the Tao Te Ching: The wise man points at the moon and the fools stare at my finger. This song is on my list for my funeral, which is hopefully a long time from now :)

I discovered this video a couple of years ago. I wore it out then let it be for awhile. When the HBO show, The Leftovers, opened with this song in Season 2 I joyously rediscovered it. This is an amazing a group of musicians. Her voice is mesmerizing. At the end you hear "Keep that one." I agree wholeheartedly!
I couldn't love the notion and energy and charm of this song any more. Everything about it -- the bluegrass / gospel vibe, the sweet harmonies of guitars, mandolin and fiddle, and the sentiment that why worry about something you can never know until the time comes -- is wonderful. Sweet, funny, gentle and full of whimsy. Love it!

i bought Iris's first album on Rounder Records from which this song appears. I heard it on the radio on the "Heartfelt Music" Saturday Morning show on KPFK Los Angeles. I was having breakfast and reading the morning LA Times and I suddenly stopped with a spoonful of Shredded Wheat in my mouth and just listened to the song. After my shower I drove down to Tower Records and bought the album and spent the better part of the day listening to the record. This was my favorite song on the album. A week later I saw her at McCabes in Santa Monica her first performance here in SoCaL.. The year was 1992 and I was hooked on Iris. Every time she came to Los Angeles I saw her. Her voice was pure country and so was her music. If you want real country, pull yourself away from today's country music which is nothing but hard rock music with a fiddle and listen to Iris. She still tours and I go out of my way to see her every time.
I knew it was her the moment she sang the first line. She is one of a kind ❤️ completely original sound all her own. 😊My mother loved her and often had her playing on her kitchen radio/cd player.💛

I'm rewatching The Leftovers. One of HBO'S best shows ever. Love this theme song, wish they had kept it for season 3.
All of these artists are the best at their game. And yet we see they are in awe of Iris. Especially, Jay Ungar seems to be playing a layer of love on this song. The year of this video, Iris was the musician you should have seen and experienced. Her shows were visceral and raw, emotive and unparalleled...Etched on the memory eternal.

Quite simply, without hyperbole, this is my favorite and the most emotionally compelling video on UA-cam. When Iris was in this phase of her career, she was intense, vulnerable, unbelievably powerful; and even unhappy, nervous and disturbed. She would sit in her dressing room alone for 30 minutes after a show, composing herself. She's the only artist I ever saw that made grizzled bikers blubber :) What a genius!
I first heard Iris De Ment in the 90" and purchased her CD "Infamous Angel" and still play it today. Just close your eyes and sit back.
No one else could possibly perform this song...Iris is cute to the point of spontaneous combustion.
Little did she know, 23 years later this would become the theme song of the most somber, depressing, thought-provoking, and amazing show on television. Funny how things work.
Season 2 and 3 were less depressing than Season 1. Season 3 is a riot. Laughs for days. A Frenchman submariner uses the power of yoga to launch a nuke at a South Pacific island because he thinks a demon egg resides there. International Assassin remix is funny "We fucked up with Nora", ya think?

I find Dark, The Wire and True Detective to be more depressing and somber.
S2 though was one of the best seasons of any show, that's for sure. But it wasn't nearly as somber and bleak as S1.

A remarkably talented and very beautiful Artist, first heard many years ago on Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor (National Public Radio). Iris captures something so heartfelt and radiantly natural in her voice and style. A lovely blend of Country and Folk elements interwoven in perfect harmony.
This is one of the most profound wonderful songs ever written. I love her voice and all the stringed instruments ! Props to Natalie Merchant for mentioning this song in the 90's which put it on my radar.

This version of "Let The Mystery Be" was the opening theme music for some episodes of the 2014 mini-series "The Leftovers". I had never hear the song before, so I searched for it on UA-cam. I love the song because it reinforces my belief that life and death are mysteries which may or may not ever be solved.

I love this song too. It makes me laugh, especially since I was raised Catholic. It reminds me of a saying from the Tao Te Ching: The wise man points at the moon and the fools stare at my finger. This song is on my list for my funeral, which is hopefully a long time from now :)

I discovered this video a couple of years ago. I wore it out then let it be for awhile. When the HBO show, The Leftovers, opened with this song in Season 2 I joyously rediscovered it. This is an amazing a group of musicians. Her voice is mesmerizing. At the end you hear "Keep that one." I agree wholeheartedly!

I couldn't love the notion and energy and charm of this song any more. Everything about it -- the bluegrass / gospel vibe, the sweet harmonies of guitars, mandolin and fiddle, and the sentiment that why worry about something you can never know until the time comes -- is wonderful. Sweet, funny, gentle and full of whimsy. Love it!

She makes me smile and chuckle in my heart, and everything I hear about her from folks who know Ms. DeMent just makes her seem all the more like a happy light shining through those curtains us folks all have, like a sunbeam peeking trough illuminating all those sleepy li'l motes just lazily floating and dancing in the warm gold crepuscular rays with nary a care at all . Saw Iris and John Prine together at a theater in New Orleans about 20 years ago. Just incredible. Their voices and words just cut right through to the heart.

i bought Iris's first album on Rounder Records from which this song appears. I heard it on the radio on the "Heartfelt Music" Saturday Morning show on KPFK Los Angeles. I was having breakfast and reading the morning LA Times and I suddenly stopped with a spoonful of Shredded Wheat in my mouth and just listened to the song. After my shower I drove down to Tower Records and bought the album and spent the better part of the day listening to the record. This was my favorite song on the album. A week later I saw her at McCabes in Santa Monica her first performance here in SoCaL.. The year was 1992 and I was hooked on Iris. Every time she came to Los Angeles I saw her. Her voice was pure country and so was her music. If you want real country, pull yourself away from today's country music which is nothing but hard rock music with a fiddle and listen to Iris. She still tours and I go out of my way to see her every time.
I knew it was her the moment she sang the first line. She is one of a kind ❤️ completely original sound all her own. 😊My mother loved her and often had her playing on her kitchen radio/cd player.💛
