Note: This radio is VERY SENSITIVE! Attenuator was “off” because Video was made listening to distant SDR’s for audio. I typically run my attenuator between six and 12 to eliminate noise at my QTH.
I have BAD RFI due to a power transformer outside my home. Typically use my magnetic loop to null it out, but I am in the process of changing its location.
MISTAKE MADE! 300 Hz CW Filter NOT 300 KHz CW Filter! See Part 2 about that.

NOTE: on the comparison using the Austin, Texas SDR, the signal can BARELY be heard at 100 watts within the noise floor upon later review.
That’s about 1,700 miles away over land with HORRIBLE PROPAGATION.
To the West, The 101 MP SHINED over the Pacific Ocean, Transmitting a signal much farther. How much farther? Rotorua, New Zealand! 6,850 miles away! It’s A great example of how seawater helps your signal skip farther.
But, what if you lower the transmit power even more than 100 watts? How far can it be lowered and still be heard there? Watch the video and find out!

I picked up a 101D and comparison to my 3000 is that I can clarly hear and copy weak stations that are in the noise on the 3000. It's nice to copy everyone on the nets that I couldn't before and needed relays. It's a keeper. 73, KG7SXF.
Hi Larry.. Thanks for the video, I’ve had my dx10 since March and I’m so impressed with it I’m now on the verge of upgrading to the 101mp. Did you find the screen quality better on the 10 as mine is very punchy and they are a year newer?
Also was the dnr identical in the way they sound as I know the mp has the vc tune as well, just don’t want to feel I’m going backwards in anyway from the dx10? As you have reviewed both radios I wondered how much of a different experience you found it in real life… Words of wisdom when you get a chance would be great…. 2E0OBM 👍

GREAT QUESTION!
With my experience, I’d go with the D model if you don’t have an amplifier already.
With the money you’d save between the 101 D and 101 MP, you can purchase the FTDX 101 D AND the ALS 500M amplifier at $1099 (US) This gets you the transceiver you want and a full legal limit amplifier that will automatically band switch with you, as you change frequencies.
If you purchase the ALS 500 M and buy the amplifier connecting cable from the 101 to the 500 M, you’ll have a solid state automatic band switching legal limit amplifier with one of the best receivers on earth.
Just make sure you’re using a resonant antenna or have at least a 500 w capable antenna tuner in front of the amplifier to protect it from high SWR.
I’ve LOVED my ALS 1306 mate and the Ameritron warranty is outstanding. 1 year “no matter what happens” warranty.
I had an accident happen with my 1306 where I didn’t get the operate button turned off quickly enough while I was trying to tune the transceiver during CQWW.
The mistake was mine.
Ameritron fully checked out my 1306 and replaced the burnt final I blew free of charge. (Minus shipping of course)
It was 11 months old when it happened.
If this had been an amplifier made by most other companies, I would have been on the hook for all the repairs.
I can’t recommend more highly Ameritron and MFJ products because they stand behind them and why I’m recommending going with the 500 M.
Usually, the main draw for the MP is the extra watts.
I’d rather get more power out and still have the great receiver. I maximize my purchase that way.
You might even save more money on the amplifier as well.

@@HamRadioLiveShow The ALS 500M uses four 2879’s. If you drive them fully you will see approx 400-500 average and 1000 watts PEP. Not quite full legal limit, also you cant push the full 200 watts into 4x 2879s. From my memory it only needs about 100 watts total, 25 watts per transistor. *just checked its 10 watts carrier and 150 pep is the max drive but that will cut the life short.
The cheapest way to get 1500 watts is 3-500z tubes. I used to run 4 of them and saw 3000 watts PEP. Upgraded to a 3CX3000a7 and it does 12kw lol. Crazy right? I drive it with 1 500z tube.
Vacuum tubes are dangerous (Im young and dont know much but i read a lot and buy the crazy stuff). Just ordered a 3CX15000A7 not 1500 but 15000.
Cheapest is Icom 7300 or any 100 watt radio into 2x 3-500z tubes. Each tube takes 46 watts and gives you 740 output. 100 watts into two tubes gets you 1500 watts. You can push them BUT you wont see any more DB on the receiver side as you need 4x more output for 1DB. I keep adding 4x power to my shack every yr.
Please note, CW filter option for this rig was misstated. It’s a 300 Hz roofing filter for CW NOT a 300 KHz one. Sorry for the error.
I am late to this video and nearly called that out! I suspect I will have a 101MP soon, the transmitter is marginally cleaner than the 101D but probably only of academic interest only.
before upgrading your radio to more power make sure you have a completely resonant antenna setup properly for the band you want being able to bypass a tuner and have the radio push every available watt is most important, then the extra 100 watts will help in a pileup

Good idea. Poorly executed. A few good examples of 3db difference. Power levels lower than 100 watts lead to an inconsistent presentation. I had trouble hearing the signal you were listening to with the constant noise. I don't remember if you provided your location at the beginning.
Hi Larry, just come across this video, was wondering what you thought in the FtDx10, the Ft101 or the new Ft710 due out in August 2022.
As of power 200w is better than 100w, but would you prefer a 20w contact 1,500km away or a 100/200w contact 3,000km away, I know what I have available & what the answer is above, for me anyways.

I no longer have the 101. It was a fantastic front end radio for sure. Reminds me of using my FTDX 5000 in the way that the controls of the radio are set up on the front end. I still have the 5000 but no longer the 101.
Lots of better days ahead and perhaps another one will pop on to the desk someday.

They typically always come from people who don’t know how to make UA-cam content of their own, so it’s easy to knock someone else who can.

I’m stunned at 35 watts you can get to NZ.
Why?
MP not worth the additional money.
Extra 100w might be less than 1 S point.
The speaker with MP is rubbish, and reports of birdies with the MP psu.
I've the 101D and don't use the vc tune..only reason I went for 101D is 70mhz and quieter RX.
Does the rf out show a 8k signal, ?
What are those uniformly spaced signals on the 40 M screen?

I could also use to re-tune my antenna. Unfortunately, I’m coming off of rotator cuff repair and there’s no way I can fix anything for another couple of months.
The MP has the superior 50v vrf150 final, The D only has a 12v final
i have an ft101 MP, well , buy it is the biggest error i have done in my life. Audio from speakers is HORRIBLE, totally flat, no basses, no treble, nothing. no second mic ( like my 9000MP ) , autonotch ( DNF) is not usable except than in CW, don't try to use in ssb, it destroy all the modulations you want to recive. Don't try to use an audio system to speak, beccause you will be surrounded by rf spikes, ground loops with an horrible humming... second reciever has a coaxial vfo that is quite unusable why yaesu is producing such kind of radio?
what antenna do you use
This would have been on the Hygain AV 680 vertical antenna. Had to think back a ways there!
It was a really good and tender for me. Unfortunately, lost to a very bad ice storm here this past February.
Going from 100 watts to 200 is a moot point. The increase will probably not even get noticed on the S meter.
Actually, it can break up a pile up believe it or not… You’ll get an extra 1/2 S unit out of it. And I have broken many pile ups out using that extra hundred watts. Is it a huge increase? No way. They can make a bit of a difference.

I think I'd rather an Amplifier, and idle the drive power 70-100 for longevity. 👍

You know, I am a big proponent of a grade Antenna. Instead of spending big bucks for an amplifier, save up and either make a couple of phased verticals or purchase a commercial product. The great thing about having a directional antenna is it helps you hear better as well as transmit better. You know, this was a big mistake I made in first building my shack.
And to be honest, I have some good friends who have been hams for decades who told me to spend all I could on a great directional antenna first. I ignored it because I wanted the great radio first.
I’ll get this SteppIR Urban Beam built and will have a very very long term review on it… Working all over the world with it and I’ll be explaining the differences between using it compared to a very good vertical Antenna.
I hope it helps you as well my friend. I’ve learned the hard way that the “Tim Allen principal“ of more power from an amplifier Will always be beat by a great antenna.
I wish I could put a nice tower up on my property, then run a very nice set of Yagis, but my circumstances where I live jump permit that. The Urban Beam is about as big as I can put up on my property.
You may have a larger property and be in a different situation. If you are, a great Delta loop or even a couple of stacked verticals Will keep you smiling for years.

1st purchase should be Antenna and Coax ALWAYS, then Radio, then Amp IF need be. Nothing beats the best Antenna you can physically, and financially aquire gain wise.
More power only helps when other opportunities are limited, and a good radio helps the ears, as well as the TX, BUT, 200W over 100 is still.........a pin drop. However, 200 as opposed to QRP, YEP, I'll take the 200 lol

*_I'll give you some valuable feedback. The receiver noise level was so loud after Texas and your level so low it was hard to understand you. Suggest you turn down the static or eat the microphone. You actually should be listening to the record mix so you can hear this stuff yourself. And don't ever move the camera live like you did. That was painful to watch. Set up a shot like that on a separate fixed camera that you can dissolve to. Best of luck going live._*

It was a constructive criticism comment and it was a good and valid comment even if the execution was confrontational to you. It was a suggestion as he said. Be flexible, make videos to help people out when you receive suggestions instead of antagonizing your viewers and getting all defensive about it. He doesn't have to make a video, I don't either. But you're on a public forum and you're producing content. Try to help out when asked instead of being stuck in your ways. This was a great video, that SHOULD be edited and does indeed have too much waffle. Leave your live shows going, they're fine. But learn to take suggestions and be less aggressive with your trigger reactions.
" The Yaesu 101 MP made by Yaesu" ? ! Far too long with some irrelevant content ( MP additions mentioned numerous times ) and off topic which was 200 vs 100 watts. We got 50, 25 and 15 watts. Bad choice of night and band with noise. WEBSDR RX should have been muted when not actually testing signals.
