I love Momotaro! He is displaying perfectly normal Silverback behavior. The problem is with the small indoor enclosure. Gentaro and Kintaro are playing too close to dads meal. They can't help it, and neither can Momotaro. It's their nature play and roll around, and it's Momotaro's nature to protect his food. Gorilla's don't share their food. You'll even see Genki take food out of Kintaro's mouth. It's also Momotaro's job to make sure Gentaro doesn't play to roughly with little brother. That's why he swats him. They have some human traits, but they're not human. They can't be judged by our standards.

I disagree with most of what you say, your generalising gorillas behaviour... Dad swats Gentaro when he gets to rough but he sits there while Gentaro loots Kintaro over rocks and logs...that's not doing his job as a leader. Momo is a bully and lazy... JMO

Limited space and such a small troop may alter gorilla behavior, but to call Momotaro a lazy bully is to judge him by human standards. We disagree. Period.
@@midoriburgess5941 thank you! The crazy thing is that this is UA-cam, where one can watch vids of gorillas in the wild to see just how dominant and aggressive silverbacks can be. Of course, being in captivity can alter behavior, but Momotaro isn't doing anything a wild Silverback wouldn't do!

Momotaro is a handsome animal, but I don't think much of his personality. I appreciate the way he's looked out for Mum and baby in times of possible trouble (the earthquake for example), but aside from that he is often too quick to take a swipe at the kids. It's like an abusive family with parents that are bad tempered and regularly swing for the children whether they've done anything wrong or not. I know they're not people, but this little family doesn't compare well with other gorillas. Perhaps they'd be happier if they had a more modern enclosure. That's something that has definitely made Shabani's troop more content and healthy looking.

Brown Rabbit I love Gentaro and Kintaro but I find watching these videos quite upsetting, the dreadful enclosure and the boredom that shows on the faces of these wonderful animals. I’ll be pleased when Gentaro moves hopefully to a better place but poor little Kintaro will lose his playmate. Momotaro always looks so sad, he’s got no idea of how to behave with his children, I know he was raised without a silverback to teach him but perhaps he would have been more suited to a bachelor group. 🦍🇬🇧

How can you hit a one year-old who is just being a child and playful? Poor Gentario did nothing at all, and got jabbed a couple of times for no reason!
Both Momotaro and Gentario are a slightly overweight (more so for Momotaro), so they must be fed enough So what is the cause for the obsession and the violence over food?

I do love watching the brothers wrestle. It's clear it makes them both happy. Little Kintaro gives as good as he gets. Big Brother Gentaro shows great restraint when wrestling with his little brother, as he could very easily injure him. As for Momotaro, I get the sense he did not grow up with any siblings, hence his loner ways. He does not like to share his food. But I disagree with some of the other comments. Yes, Momotaro is quick to react negatively. But he is a gorilla and not a human. And he is a very large gorilla, who in my opinion, could very easily cause great harm to any of the other gorillas in his troop. He is very strong but his swipes and pushes really are not severe.

Not fair. Both brothers were enjoying each others company by playing gorila games to pass the time as is natural. Then their big, oversized father starts dishing out whacks to both which, as far as I'm concerned, is completely uncalled for. I felt sorry for poor gentaro. If Momotaro is annoyed while eating he could have gone to another area of the enclosure and eat in peace.
Momotaro needs to have his family taken away from him and put it in the other cage and watch them from afar so he can have a punishment for being so brutal to them even if it means for a little while

I bet Mama Genki wanted to mutter under her breath, *Oh NoNO MoMo,* but then she realized Papa's swipes at baby Kentaro were pretty harmless...It actually made me laugh since baby Kintaro seemed to take it all in stride as he continued to roll all around on the floor & keep on "pestering" sweet Gentaro...This precious little imp has so much courage & tenacity...(Although it actually makes me nervous at times... *: )* ...One thing's for sure, & that is once he got stronger & his unsteady walking improved (without falling over), he's taken off like a wild weed & now is constantly on the *GoGoGo* making up for lost time... HaHa...Don't you just LOVE this family...I sure do... *: )*

@@braska19 Gentaro might be a threat but Kintaro can't possibly be one. The truth is Momotaro is ready to punch anyone in family if they are around when he is eating. He has a mean street. Gentaro can still hurt Kintaro, it would have been best if he was with males. Someone said Gentaro will not be pared up with a female, said there will be no bride for Gentaro.
These are not people! These are gorillas (wild animals) and the dad did what was needed. He is also King and this is his authority, period. These wild animals still react by instinct. I like Momotaro very much and given his limited situation being in captivity and not a great place, I think he's doing great.

They have to follow Momotaro and his rules. He is the boss. If they do not follow, and he starts to wait and let them eat girt they would not accept Jim as chief, and would not follow otherwise. Then he cannot protect them. They have to learn all what counts is his opinion and wishes. Otherwise a troop cannot survive.
If the slaps hurt, it is just good. That way they won't forgot to follow the silverback.

That’s usually how it works. Discipline isn’t sometimes warranted with Gorillas. It’s just a sign of dominance. Shabani did it frequently as well with his troop. It’s common behavior that unfortunately has to happen in order to keep balance and show who is in charge.
Also they are all males and momotaro is well aware of it. He has a son coming into adulthood who constantly test his dominance by charging at him. It’s unfortunate that baby gets hit but he’s of age now that he has to be disciplined too and learn boundaries. It’s like this in the wild as well. It’s like momotaro is damn’d if he do and damn’d if he doesn’t. He’s disciplining gentaro way more something everyone hoped will happen and now there’s a problem when he does it. He’s way more protective of baby. He stopped gentaro in his tracks from looting baby by punching him in the face. He’s finally stepping into his role as a dominant troop leader. It’s actually well over due. We may not like it, but they are animals. Their instincts and behaviors are different than ours. From the outside looking in it’s definitely unfair, but he’s doing a good job now than he was in the past.

Wow, this is intense they really should separate Momo while he’s eating. They have no room, it’s disgusting, too small and just sad. They have no room too play the enclosure outside and inside are too small. Those punches have too hurt. This really breaks my heart. This zoo really should be ashamed of themselves.

They don't feed them enough everyday there scrounging for crumbs of dry hay and a couple of morsels of green grass pathetic if they want to show the animals feed them correctly and I guarantee you none of this activity would happen

Momotarou he lived alone since he was 7 years, he doesn't have anyone else to share his food (In fact : Sharing food is an abnormall for animals) he growth without his father, he has nobody to teach him how to be Silverback, how to be dad, how to be husband but he did a great job to be master of his troop!! Alright, Gentarou he is really cute and good boy but sometimes he's really alert and naughty, do not let him alert because he will fulls of energy and quite bad. That's why Momotarou has to discliplines, warns or scolds.
This family not playful family, Momotarou loves to stay alone and play with his kids sometimes, Genki loves to eat more than play with kids because she gets old, Gentarou is an alert sometimes and loves to play with his lil bro if he lazy he will sleeps, Kintarou he just a kid he loves to play with everything what he found by himself.
Finally, if you need to watch the chaotic family this family is not your choice. We're just watch everything that's we saw everyday.

Guys they are gorillas. They share our dna yes but they are still wild undomesticated animals. They have their own rules and act on instinct. The dad is just doing what silverbacks do. It’s not like you can call social services on them

Their is a river of urine flowing against the wall with feces and food in it. They should not have to eat that. Plus they're rolling around in the urine & feces. They must smell like who did it and ran~!!

Peter Canarelli It looks that way. We've been assured by some people commenting here that they're well fed, but we don't see much evidence of that. Taking into account the amount of negative comments you would think this zoo would want to prove viewers wrong, yet nothing changes.

breadandcircus1 I agree. I've rarely seen them given much else. It's other people who claim they're given other things when they're not being filmed. I've occasionally seen them with little pieces of fruit, or sometimes they've had fruit and veg for a birthday treat. Other gorilla families can often be seen getting a huge variety of veggies.

Genki, Momotaro, Gentaro live like in a prison, you can see the stress in their faces, their behavior. What kind of environment is that being provided by Kyoto zoo? A small enclosure. This is INHUMANE. . No wonder aggressive behavior erupts here . This zoo should make an effort to provide a healthy, bigger, environmental suitable place for gorillas. This toxic restricted environment is harming them psychologically and physically too.
What CRIME have these lovely, sweet, highly intelligent family of gorillas have committed to be confined to this prison? This small enclosure is affecting them psychologically and physically. Kyoto zoo is failing to provide a more suitable environment, place for the gorillas. This is unethical treatment of animals
