  • Here at Rocket Restorations we are super lucky to have the best customers in the world and here is a great example. Ray’s, the owner, Mom and Dad bought this thing brand new in 1968! They wanted a hemi but the salesman talked them out of it. Car is a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T and in fantastic condition. Just a great driver car. We have worked on this car the last couple of years and always a pleasure to have it in the shop. 68 Chargers are great cars.

    Thank you Tom. That was awesome. My mom thanks you also. She loved your video. I think the mufflers are California Turbos. My dad and I had to get them replaced because one day while having it started one of the mufflers blew up. Literally blew up, split the seems, so freaking loud. Then the other muffler blew a few seconds later. Never seen that happen before or since. The car was so loud driving to the muffler shop with open exhaust. We were sure to get pulled over because of how loud it was but made it there without incident besides getting allot of looks.

      @@carebear2272 bunch of cool cars back in those days. Along with the typical GM's one of my classmates had a beautiful 70 Challenger T/A, he even had his own parking spot and no one ever messed with him. It was later featured in a magazine. Another guy had a beautiful 68 Charger and a 73 Charger that he considered his beater.

    Beautiful Charger ! Good to hear it's being driven as it should be !
    I'm about 7 hours North in BC and I better do a video on mine pretty quick, if for no other reason than to document my Charger's history as I get older.
    It's a survivor X9 Black '69 R/T SE 440/auto, unrebuilt, unrestored still in great shape it was sold new in San Diego to a USN F8 Crusader "Top Gun" Fighter Pilot at Miramar, he married a Canadian Actress working in LA and they later emigrated back to her hometown in BC Canada bringing the Charger as marital property. I still drive it plenty in summers, although at 154,000 Miles the 440 is starting to get some blowby but no 'blue' yet.

      Hemi cars were hard to sell back then and have heard many stories of salesman talking people out of them because if they got the car in and the owner decided they didn’t want it the dealer would be stuck with a car they would have a hard time selling.

    This one takes me back.... our neighbor, a pilot for PanAm Airlines purchased a new 68 Charger, identical to this one. The car was parked every morning at our bus stop. Every day before we hopped on the bus, my brother and I would gush over the new Charger.

    I know their a pain in the ass to find parts for and get running correctly but their couldn’t have been many 68 Charger RT’s 440’s ordered with air conditioning!! I’d think you might add 20-30% value if you got the original configuration up and running! And you’re right!, they really drain horsepower and gasoline but that’s why few were configured this way.

    • @rocketresto
      @rocketresto  3 місяці тому

      Funny AC used to be a negative on these but now as people get older comfort is more important than horsepower.

    Tom, when did the 68 Charger owners manual cover show the rear view mirror with the front end of the Ford Mustang GT from the movie 'Bullitt'? Maybe mid 68 since the movie came out around May of 68?

      We spray the paint and don’t use a can. Get it from Frank Badalson American Muscle car parts. Cans are also available, try Mancini.

      Funny story that one. While doing a small road trip to Westport, WA while driving back the engine would just die for no reason and restart it self like it was out of gas but worse. That was my thought anyway. The gas gauge is not all that accurate anymore so I have to watch my mileage so I don't run out of gas. Been there, done that. After I got it home to troubleshoot it I found out the starter was actually loose since the top threaded hole was stripped with no bolt and the bottom worked its way loose and the terminals was shorting out on the suspension. Got a mini starter that cranks faster. Works great. I would highly recommend them. The engine was rebuilt last year and has 9.8:1 compression and dyno'd at 420hp/500 ft/lb torque.
