  • I’ve been looking for a follow up to the Mecum auction car video I did a couple months ago, and so far I’ve found… nothing close to it in terms of badness. You know what I have found? Some really good restorations. Today I’d like to have a look at one of those.
    Have you seen a not-so-great restoration job on a Charger or other Mopar muscle car that is listed for sale or registered at an auction? Have you seen a really great one? I’d like to see that sort of thing - so drop a link in the comments, or shoot me an email at jamienoise@gmail.com
    Thanks to ‪@uniqueclassiccars‬ for providing this listing with tons of excellent detailed photos. If you want to own this thing, give them a ring.

    I did a resto mod 68. I paid for most of it to be done by a shop, (because the level of quality desired was well above my skill level). About $220K to finish it. Included an engine rebuild with fancy parts added. $150K for this example doesn't seem unreasonable.

      Right. This is truly a pristine example as best as I can tell, and the workmanship was clearly top notch. It’s very expensive - but it’s very good.

    That appears to be the level of quality you would expect for a 115K Charger. I agree the green Charger was no way near the price it pulled. Happens all the time even on a high restoration like this blue one--forgot the map pocket trim(the two square chrome buttons on the corners of the map pockets). Keep these videos coming.

      People that act so smart don't realize how much it costs to restore one of these. Buy a clapped out '68 for 20 large and dump a hundo into it over 2+ years and then hope you end up with this nice of a finished product. Price out AMD panels, paint/body materials, restoration parts, etc. and that's probably without labor for crying out loud. If I had an extra 150 in a retirement account I would pull it out and diversify into this appreciating asset. It's nothing less than fine art...but waaaay more fun!

    From what I've gathered in the past researching my '68RT and confirming the details (I'm second owner and know the original owner didn't modify anything from when he purchased it new), for '68 the differences between standard and RT were 11" drums instead of 10" unless you opted for disks, and a beefier front sway bar and torsion bars, and indeed an extra leaf in the right rear leaf spring. There were different options you could add on but ticking just the RT option, those were the differences I believe. I haven't seen with any consistency otherwise.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage

      That sounds correct to me. I am by no means an expert, but I’ve done a lot of reading over the years. I bring up the drum brakes specifically because of all the commenters on the previous video insisting that it had to be an R/T clone because it had drum brakes, which is absolutely not the case.

    Is that a Mark Worman special? He's the only 1 I'd think of when I see a restoration that correct but with a modern technology paint job. Chalk marks, rear diff lettering from the line, under hood stickers, and It's truly beautiful. The 4 speed and big block in a plan Jane but sexy blue. I'm guessing big block cause of sway bar.

      Good call. I know - it’s totally nuts. I think I mentioned what I paid for my car, and it was a lot. It’s no R/T, and it has had some work done, but it’s a relatively solid and largely original car that I can actually drive, enjoy, and depend on. It would be just about impossible to be replace.

    Great example, but its sad because this car will sit in garage and be eye candy. What makes these cars special is to drive them and experience it. That experience also includes fixing them as well. Rather find one that needs some work, with some small bumps that we can drive, than this. Still a beautiful car.

  • @EdFox-vr4ck

    It is so nice I don't think I could enjoy it. When I'm around something that is so perfect and I want to play with it, I remember a time from my childhood when my older sister snatched a toy away from me and said "your hands will only ruin this!" . She was correct of course but still, what good is a beautiful toy if you can't play with it the way you want too? I'm 62 now and I still break my toys but I enjoy the hell out of them. I guess that's why I don't go for the perfect restoration thig. Don't get me wrong, I like things to be nice but not perfect because then I don't have to be worried about breaking them as much. I have a 68 coronet R/T convertible and it is nice, very nice but I'm constantly doing burnouts with it or just running it to redline before shifting every chance I get because if it breaks I will fix it. My dog loves being in the car with me and hanging his hear out in the wind. In order to do this he has scratches the top of the door a little but its totally worth it to me. How do you feel about the perfect car thig? Would you want to have this beautifully restored blue charger or would its pristineness prevent you from enjoying it fully?

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому +1

      No, I completely agree with you. I love my Charger, and while it’s a good looking car, it’s in a different universe than this thing. I have no interest in owning a car that I can’t use and enjoy. I understand why someone might want something like this - and if they can afford it, more power to them. But it’s much too nice for me. The other day, a brake shoe spring retainer shot off of my barracuda and dinged my Charger. While I was upset about it, it’s pretty close to two other dings, and I’m not going to cry about it. I get the nice seats grubby because that’s who I am as a person. I drive it every chance I get as weather allows. It’s nice enough - but not so nice as to be scared. And… it’s insured.

    That is the going rate for a restored 68. The work is spot on and to be honest 100k was spent at the shop that did it. This is years of work or with a team 6mo to 8mo. I saw mecum pawn off a 70 hemi charger but the funny thing is it's numbers matching status was bogus. It turned into a law suit when it was proven it was a rebody. Of course you never hear about those deals unless your in the position I am in. Lots of dirty cars out there so do your homework before you buy. Go see the car in person. Frankly I got lucky when I bought my 70 hemi charger because I knew Tony the builder and watched it come together. I paid 25k for it in 2004. Wonder where it is today. The last guy that had it dropped a valve and blew the motor so I was told. Doing donuts in a Walmart parking lot. Dumb azz.

      @DeadDodgeGarage  Рік тому

      I disagree. Many collector grade cars are trading at a quarter million or higher. You wouldn’t pay for it, I wouldn’t pay for it, but that does NOT mean it isn’t “worth” it, or that the seller is a “thief.” I maintain that the high quality and extremely thorough restoration job to get this car to where it is probably put the owner into the car close to or above what it is selling for. If you paid a company to do this to yours, you would be spending $100,000 or more. Just a savable Charger R/T that needs everything runs $30-50k now. So… do the math.

Some guys over Exaggerate the money they actually spent on the restoration of their cars. So if this charger R/T is worth $150,000.00 then my 426 Hemi Charger 500 must be worth alot more cause the Charger 500 was a Limited Production model, you don't believe me look it an do the math.
