    Today we are revisiting the phrase in 3/4 from the Modern Drummer Magazine Article (get the PDF for free in the link below) from Lesson 4 (see all lesson links below)
    A = Paradiddle-diddle-Paradiddle-diddle-Paradiddle-Paradiddle-Paradiddle 3xs
    B = Double-Paradiddle - Double Paradiddle - Paradiddle-Paradiddle-Paradiddle 1x
    However, this time we are switching the feet ostinato:
    1- Positions 1 to 4 we are playing the feet R - L - L = bass drum - hi-hat - hi-hat
    2- Positions 5 to 9 we are playing a half notes “swishing” splashing the hi-hat.
    This leaves a lot of space, and it takes 2 measures to resolve.
    Each half note is on beat 1, 3, and 2: we are playing 3 over 6, 3 half notes played evenly trough 2 measures.
    0 = open hi hat with left foot
    1 2 3 | 1 2 3
    0. 0. 0
    The challenge is to be able to continue playing the phrase with the hands while the feet is switching back and forth between the two ostinatos. Also, for many students and professionals, it is difficult to place the bass drum with the hand accents.
    If you pay attention, you will see that in addition to switch the bass drum and hi-hat ostinato midway through all this, we are accenting the cymbals and reenforcing those hits with a bass drum accent as well. That requires some level of coordination. Playing these exercises will improve your coordination for sure. Have Fun with this!
    My “Geometric Phrasing” concept is intended to be used many ways. One of the many ways I use it myself it is to warm up not only physically but mentally as well.
    The “Geometric Phrasing” Concept is not really about the “what” it is about the “How.”
    I have presented 7 lessons here so far, and yes, many ideas we did include Paradiddles etc., but the point later is to create musical phrases that are 2-bars, or 4-bras, or 8-bras etc.
    So, what sticking you use to make your phrases it is up to you. It is the “how” that is cool here, it is to then get the phrase to flip from right lead to left lead, then run the entre thing in all geometric positions. That is what was different when I started practicing this way.
    I started to see and hear new phrases every time I practiced and improved my skills to move around the drum set in various directions.
