This video is a demonstration of Etude 9 on page 46 from the book,
    The Ultimate Hand Technique Workshop.
In this demonstration the snare Etude 9 is played on the drum set. This is to illustrate how you can use the ideas presented in this etude such as odd groupings of 7s also known as septuplets, for an extended number of measures.
The Etudes in the book are inspired by rhythms played by Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and master Gary Chaffee.
This etude on page 46, presents a variety of advanced rhythms and hand techniques directly inspired by the great Vinnie Colaiuta. During my many years studying with Vinnie Colaiuta’s teacher, Mr. Gary Chaffee, I have many opportunities to discuss the many aspects of Vinnie’s playing and the concepts and techniques he uses on his own playing. Although in a band situation, I would use just a few beats of such rhythms, may be stretching to a few measures, playing an etude such as these, it strengths my abilities to stretch live. I am training my ears, not my hands! I am training my ears to “hear” a flow of septuplets accented anywhere I want to accent. This is highly advanced because not only I am playing 28 over 4 the entire time, the rhythms are for the most part not only over the beat but also over the bar line! Phew…
This is one of the hardest etudes in the book. Very few people will have the discipline to concentrate for that long, let alone hear the sevens over 4 and over 2 and more, so I did play a little intro, counting off and playing a series of septuplets just in case someone advanced is listening to this, they can at least lock in before the madness starts! LOL
I am so sorry that this might sound like noise to 99% of the drummers out there, but I am ok not being like the majority. I enjoy my place with great honor. Very thankful and grateful for my special lineage with Master Gary Chaffee, Alan Dawson, John Ramsay, Dr. John Wootton, Jim Chapin, and Freddie Grubber…
I am using jazz techniques that I learned from the master Alan Dawson, stickings I learned from master Gary Chaffee, and hand techniques I learned from Jim Chapin, plus some of my own creations as well.
I love this book because all the other snare books that I tried to play using the full kit, did not sound to me, like anything I would play in a gig. To me, this book presents me with the vocabulary I need and want to use when I play. This one helps me playing in 7 on my gigs, like a boss!
