I just got a new practice/rehearsal space and started using this system with a paradiddle, because there’s no wifi and it’s harder to be distracted by lesson videos. Just having to pre-plan and go in and spend time with something opened up my practice time and is producing big improvements.
I'm 59 & started playing 2 1/2 years ago. You hit on issues here & in your other videos that I have, but no one else (young students) mentions. For example, you talk about moving around the kit disrupting the exact same sequence. YES! I noticed this early on. And like you say, I concluded the sound itself messed with my perception. (Using an electronic kit, I shut off the sound & had no issues.) The worst for me is snare/high-hat & snare/kick. For my whole non-musician life, listening to rock/pop music, my ears didn't connect low & high sounds into the same sequence. (I attribute some of this to the sometimes mediocre sound systems I was listening on.) It's been a struggle for my old brain to connect them. Having you acknowledge these simple but real hurdles is a great help to my psyche, supporting that I'm not the only one tripping over them. That's just one example. There are plenty of these seemingly little hitches that I hit, which you mention. Thank you. I look forward to studying this system to see how I can pull it into my practice. Thank you!
Yea, our hearing will hold up our learning at times. I call it the speed of your hearing. There are some tempos that will be harder because they are unfamiliar. You don't listen to music at that tempo, play it at that tempo, etc. So the key is exposing your ear to playing simples patterns at that tempo and listening to music at that tempo. That's just one example. Glad this hit you where you needed it!

Not an easy thing to learn should I say when you are an adult and you are closing to your 40 😀 but it is incredibly exciting and addictive activity, that's for sure. You videos such a big help for the newbies like me 🤩 A lot of stuff I struggle with, but I would say my biggest struggle still after first 10 months of practise is still time-keeping and staying in the pocket during the grooves, covering and playing along the songs, fills and so on... also I struggle a lot with triplets, especially quarter triplets and half note triplets 😁

I was worried my converted 14×10 tom to snare, sounded too loose and sloppy, but it sounds a lot like YOURS, so i feel a lot better. I LOVE the green sparkle kit, btw. And thank you for this GREAT essential lesson. 😃
Huh! I've been out of drumming for years aside from surviving some sessions here & there due to bad tendonitis. As I slowly pick it back up basically a decade+ after hanging it up as a touring player, my main concern now is flow & economy of movement around the kit (smart sticking, etc), & I've never seen that taught as algorithmic exercises like this. This should add a little extra method sauce as I try to build some safe strength again. Thank you!
Great . But isn't this approach orchestrating rudiments using different note values in a linear exponential process. Cool though . I’m thinking this repetition subsumes “ the sticking “ & we have 🎶😺⚡️🔥
Why didn't you use another paradiddle-diddle for the six stroke triplet section? I teach hundreds of rudimental combinations in my teaching.I use this method for breaking the time...But,I stick to one thing at a time.

If you do more of these deep dives, you'll find that people start to think "oh, ok this guy actually knows what he's talking about about,now I'll buy the course" As someone who doesn't buy into courses, it's usually because UA-cam videos are 13,18,22 minutes of usually jargon and it doesn't make me Believe they really have a lot to offer,as you can only tell so much from a regular style UA-cam video, where value is pretended to be there, but usually isn't. Someone like Steven Clark "the non glamorous drummer" is one such channel, where all I see is fake inspiration, teleprompter reading, over exaggerations of things, and making things seem way bigger than they really are. I never see him play to where I'd actually believe I could learn something from him. His whole channel is just fraudulent if you ask me
with respect of all the opinions, can say that for me, as for a complete newbiew drummer, Steven Clark' channel has been also very useful along of many other educational channels🙂😊 My humble thank you to everyone who makes teaching content, this is such a hard work 🙏🙏🙏
If you go back to one of Steven’s “Drum Podcast” last month on “The KEY to Finding a Great Drum Teacher is?”, you have to like the Teacher. There is so much info out there on YT and some will just not connect with you. Fraudulent, I don’t know but I do find at times Mr Clark’s info to click for me. Disclaimer: I’m going to my 2nd SDS camp retreat, am a lifetime member of Stephen’s DBD school( 5+ years since his Kickstarter for the studio), so have totally connected with Stephen’s methods of teaching.

That's the beauty of music...one person's approach works for some, not for others. I'd encourage you to find what DOES work for you though. That's what is most important
You tuned me out when you said “metronome” - came to learn how to play the drums and immediately i found you getting technical and going too fast. Sorry, I’m moving on to amother video.
Go to my channel...I have over 700 videos. Find one that suits your learning level where you are. A metronome is a tool we have to use to work on timing. So you will hear me refer to working with one in many of my lessons.
I don’t care!!! Is not fun to listen to… but aside from his tone of voice for the most part… he teaches some fundamental things on the drums. So I guess he’s alright
