Tony Williams, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Smith, and many other great drummers who studied at Berklee, and like me, studied with both Alan Dawson and Gary Chaffee, will play using movements and motions such as the one presented here.
In this lesson today we continue to dive in a little deeper with the materials from this course and expand the Geometric Phrase exercise from Lesson 1, Lesson 2, Lesson 3 and Lesson 4 into phrasing & movements. This will facilitate flexibility in orchestration and will develop dexterity and comfort with the geography of the instrument. It will help moving around the drums in new ways.
Today, we will be working with an entire 4-bar phrase.
Some of you here, will be familiarized with the historical book, by Ted Reed - “Progressive Steps to Syncopation for The Modern Drummer.” We will be using that book to borrow some ideas for our musical phrase.
I was introduced to the Ted Reed Syncopation book by the legendary teacher Alan Dawson, in the mid to late 1980’s later in my studies with the great John Ramsay, we also used the book “Modern Reading Text in 4/4” by Loue Bellson.
My “Geometric Phrasing” concept is intended to be used many ways. One of the many ways I use it myself it is to warm up not only physically but mentally as well.
Sometimes when I have a few minutes to work on something, and it is not enough time to really go deep into hours of practice, I might come up with a musical phrase. It can be a 2-bar phrase, or 4-bar phrase or even 8-bar phrase etc. Then I try do come up with ways to flip leading right and leading left. Then run the entire phrase on the positions presented on Lesson 1 a few days ago (see link below for Lesson 1)
So, today I will be reading a 4-measure phrase from the Ted Reed book, and I will be implementing some of the concepts I learn from Alan Dawson regarding rhythm interpretation.
Alan many times gave me jazz coordination exercises that involved playing every 8th note as a “short” sound, and every quarter note, doted quarter, and tied notes as a “long” sound.
He showed me many ways to do that I believe just in swing jazz feel we work on 32-ways to interpret a jazz phrase, plus other ways in other styles.
So, I will be playing the 4-bar phrase today moving to the 9 positions, but will be using some of the Alan Dawson rhythmic interpretations concepts:
1- Every 8th note = “short” sound on accented snare drum
2- Every other note, like quarter notes, doted quarter, tied notes = “long” sounds, and will be played either on floor tom, or high tom, or cymbals with bass drum.
3- We will keep a flow of rolling sextuplets going through all this.
Note: Position one is on the snare drum and booth hands are on the snare so, in the very first step, there is no short-long just accents.
If you did not watch the previous 4 lessons, I recommend you take those 4 lessons first:
