There is just something about a random person on the internet fixing up old nostalgia things that makes you feel calm and collected after a tough week.
I remember doing this heat gun and thermal paste repair job on my PS3 by following a youtube guide back in around 2008. It was something that felt way beyond my capabilities but I had nothing to lose attempting it. I was so damn proud of myself when the PS3 fired as normal. I was always worried about having it running for too long after that, but it kept me going until I got the slim version. The slim eventually developed issues too, usually disc drive related. The PS3 gen had terrible reliability problems.
Using heat isn’t going to bring it back to life fully. It may be temporary but there’s no telling how long it could last. But most likely that issue is going to happen again. There is a diagnostic tool that you could purchase and it reads the syscon chip on the motherboard. Then it gives you error codes and that will tell you the issue. But considering this is a G01 and the temps get very high on this model I’d say that it’s probably the GPU solder bumps since the underfill was ment for lower temps but the PS3 worked the gpu like no tomorrow. The issue was eventually fixed in late 2008 with a higher temperature underfill. The underfill issue caused the solder bumps to crack under thermal stress so it might need a new gpu but it wouldn’t be worth it on this type of model Edit: also when you didn’t fix the thermal pad it made me die inside
YLOD is usually caused by the nictoken capacitors, usually heat brings them back to life but not for long, like you said, there are replacements that are better than the nictokens
@@Cristian121212100 not for these older models. Yes they are the same exact caps between all the phats but the model that are the K01 and below have a bad underfill on the GPU ment for lower temperatures. The early phats usually get very hot too. The RSX usually fails because the solder bumps between the die and the substrate crack due to thermal stress. So yes it could still be the Nec Tokins but there’s no real way of telling unless they do a diagnostic test
Bingo! I sent mine to some gorilla mod place in MN; bought me about 6 months of use then that was it; bought a slim and was happy with it until the pos plastic casing would have some random rattling noise depending upon fan speeds… so after that I said F this, n built my first gaming pc n never looked back!
I have read that the heat is just a temporal fix for a condemned PS3... The real problem is inside the dye of the processor and to fix it you need a lot of heat, which destroy the components and can be done only during the manufacturing process.
I just got a launch PS3 for $30. Aside from the disc drive needing replacing, it works perfectly fine, which for a console from November of 2006 is incredible.
There’s also thermal paste under the IHS plates (the big metal plates that the thermal paste was on) it’s difficult to remove but replacing that paste would also exponentially help in keeping it even cooler too
Ylod was diagnosed wrong for all these years, maybe because of the 360 RROD (and that was diagnosed wrong too, it was not for a break connection between motherboard and GPU, but a break inside the GPU itself). The problem it’s not the gpu or cpu chips but probably one of the NEC capacitors gone bad. With reflow you just force this component to work, but the issue will appear again. And when it will happen, check for a short in these capacitors.
It still under testing, I bought 470uf / 6.3V Tantalum Capacitors, and I will replace the NEC capacitors if the issue (YLOD )will appear again again, Thanks for the tip!❤️
Won't last long doing this. Should have Delidded the RSX cover and the other cover, re-apply thermal paste and boom you just gave this ps3 5+ years of life
This technique is common, but YLOD recurs quickly. I also got several PS3s from discarded items at a hotel run by an acquaintance, so I repaired them many times, but in the end YLOD recurred. After all, once YLOD occurs, the PS3's CPU and GPU contact surface tear is not easily cured.
Just a little word of advice, if you're ever to clean one of these again, I would suggest using a microfiber towel instead of a paintbrush on the top cover. The paintbrush has a high chance of creating normal scratches and micro scratches on the glossy plastic.
Is it silly for me to say that those scratches can be restored? Like wasn’t there some spray and stuff you could buy back then to restore cd scratches?
Even if you do try to "fix" the scratches after they are there, they will never truly go away, you will just repolish the already scratched finished which most times will actually make it more visible. Your not wrong though, sometimes that can work but its not guaranteed.
Big mistake ... There is also a paste under the RSX plate that needs to be replaced .... That's why the ps3 gets hot ..... You have to cut the plate and replace the paste there, it is the main cause of overheating
This video recalls my memory of my old fat white ps3. It died of the same reason - triple "dood". I still keep it and I really hope I can send it to you for repair. Its just like it happened yesterday. 😢😢😢
Great video, very nice to watch, however as I'm sure many have told you in comments already - this isn't going to solve the issue. The CPU and GPU are not at fault here, the issue has been mistaken to be the solder balls cracking or overheating for many years, but only a few years ago we discovered the real cause of the issue. The actual culprit was the low profile NEC Tokien capacitors, which are the pairs of black rectangles you see a pair of next to the CPU and GPU on either side. The problem is they slowly stop working over time, causing the YLOD. The reason we never discovered these were causing the fault was because applying heat to the CPU / GPU as you do in this video also heats up the NEC caps, which temporarily makes them work again from the heat - this caused people to misdiagnose the CPU/GPU to be at fault. The real fix is actually relatively easy. :) You heat up or scrape away at one or two of the NEC capacitors to remove them. Personally I recommend using a small knife and a soldering iron to destroy and melt away the capacitors, instead of using a heat gun to desolder them, since there is many tiny capacitors and components located nearby them. Once removed, scratxh away at the board below to reveal the copper, since there is a large grounding plane around them, and then replacing each NEC cap with 4 tantalum capacitors at 470uf (iirc), soldered to the positive the capacitor used, and the revealed grounding plane. After replacing one or all of the NEC caps with 4 tantalum caps, the PS3 will reliably work again :) The best part is that this is a lasting fix, it won't stop working after 10 years or anything

Not always YLOD is caused by "cold joints" betwen MB and CPY/GPU. Its worth to check NEC capicitors that filter the voltage for CPU / GPU. They are soldered in pairs and two of them, at least, have to be replaced if even one of them is damaged. Reheating is most of the time, only temporary solution. Reballing is harder, needs equipement like matrix to set soldering balls in it, that match CPU / GPU pinout but its the only sure way to permamently fix cold joints.
@@starkiller7057if you’re console has high temperatures or the fan is loud than you have to delid rsx and cell .if you want to reflow a ylod console it is best to heat the chips and then delid it when you delid the chips then you can do the proper rsx reflow (do not reflow the cpu the cpu is good) and then repaste it
Reflowing the chips is only a temp fix and not even the real issue of the YLOD. The 8 NEC Tokin capacitors next to the chips are the real culprit of YLOD. You need to replace those one by one till you find the bad one. Technicaly they should all be replaced but they're a real pain the the ass to remove.
recently the folks over at PSX place have come to the conclusion that this may not be entirely true in fact it seems the biggest cause is still likely a BGA problem or failure of the cell or RSX, thanks for watching

I shit you not it was partially melted and still fired up. The fan was exposed somewhat but it still turned on and did it’s job. I took a picture of it and sent it to Sony. Lmao. Never replied back
💕💕fantastic relaxation❤ ASMR

Awesome job with the fix. Excellent video.😎
I've had my PS3 stopped for years. I was told that the NEC Token capacitors also caused problems. I will try to fix it. Thanks for the tutorial.
thanks for watching❤️

Really like the chanal. Has made me want to restore my old consoles for myself.
Glad you enjoyed it! ❤️

Great job, I enjoyed it very much. I think I could take this apart but I could NEVER reassemble it. You may want to consider investing in a small air compressor and a small vacuum to blow out and suck up dust and dirt. It would make things so much easier for you. Thanks for the video!
It was very interesting to watch you! You are like a teacher! thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for watching❤️

Another top-notch repair of a video game console. Most excellent. 👍
I was never open a PS3 fat because I never owned one but I've heard there's a lot of issues with the mostly because the motherboard I have a PS3 Slim 160gb I can say for sure that I open that one completely and clean it you have to be very careful when opening it and taking it apart one little mistake can cost you your PS3
I really agree with you, thanks for watching❤️
I go way back with assassins creed 3 Fire video
Should’ve just bought another one there cheap these days
Original Ps3 looks better than the ps5
Thank you my ps3
Hvala tebi sto sam pomocu tvajih redosleda popravio svoj plejstejsn 3.
Bros ps3 is not gonna last long
Percebi isto tbem.
Vídeo muito satisfatório, é muito legal ver o aparelho funcionando normalmente
Xander?
Is it a permanent solution ?
If the nec tokins are problem then no but if the gpu was problem 70% of the time it will work if you do it with flux and a lot of heat
@@Aleksa.09no need for de lidding?
@@starkiller7057if you’re console has high temperatures or the fan is loud than you have to delid rsx and cell .if you want to reflow a ylod console it is best to heat the chips and then delid it when you delid the chips then you can do the proper rsx reflow (do not reflow the cpu the cpu is good) and then repaste it
You have to use heatgun at the front and the back of the RSX
Reflowing the chips is only a temp fix and not even the real issue of the YLOD. The 8 NEC Tokin capacitors next to the chips are the real culprit of YLOD. You need to replace those one by one till you find the bad one. Technicaly they should all be replaced but they're a real pain the the ass to remove.
recently the folks over at PSX place have come to the conclusion that this may not be entirely true in fact it seems the biggest cause is still likely a BGA problem or failure of the cell or RSX, thanks for watching
What is the name of this thing you put1 10:00
That is such an awesome little screwdriver set. I have one too.
It's shocking that the fan didn't had much dust on it despite being such a old console
9 months late but I think from that this console possibly wasn't used much even with all the scratches and the ylod or it has been taken apart before idk couldn't tell you
was to start the logo I'm PlayStation too? if this PS3 is from a customer ...
Valeu pela aula... Parabéns pelo bom trabalho...
Muitíssimo obrigado
@@resEG eu que agradeço. Bom dia...
Show de bola o canal!
Theres no world where this works as ASMR because YLOD produces internal screaming

Great Video but you forgot the thermal paste under the IHS plates. Also, use a HDMI cable bro :D that gameplay was like 480p
Thanks for the tip!
I'm convinced that my first PS3 console eventually gave out because of lack of thermal paste on the CPU. But I didn't know that at the time. Plus I didn't know how to open it up, much less had the resources and/or capabilities to fix it myself so I just ended up calling their consumer service line and traded in that PS3 for another one. It was the super slim model
Ótimo vídeo ❤❤
Que bom que você gostou! ❤️

Hello, I have a PS3 Super Slim that the fan makes A LOT of noise, it always does when I play any game. He had never done that, regardless of the ambient temperature.
I have tried to erase everything, remove the battery from the board but the problem persists. Could you tell me what happens?

It’s crazy how old the PS3 is now. I still remember when it was the latest game console.

Gracias
Mano aonde vc compra console antigos?
eBay, like everyone else does
A lot of the times, it doesn't need reflow, changing those black NEC/Tokin capacitors for the GPU alone can fix YLOD. Those caps are notorious to go bad
Thanks for this valuable advice
What about the thermalpaste under the heatspreader from the RSX graphics processor?😐
Are there other types of Playstation 3? Why is mine not like that?
1 Original model.
2 Slim model.
3 Super Slim model.
I did clean everything and put thermal paste and when i play for a couple minutes the fan starts going very loud and turns off with the red light blinking 😮💨😮💨 idk what else to do
What’s the name of the paste you use
How do you know when it's done when you're using the heat gun?
Nice where you find that tool case at I can use one
How did you know a game would play before putting it back together ?
Also you didnt test a dvd or bluray which has seperate lasers from the games that are played
