A nice little DIY trick I like to do is just buy some toy soldiers from a dollar store and just use them as miniatures. Sure it won’t be as cool as having the actual miniatures but it allows you to play the game by yourself or with a friend in the absence of money to buy official minis.

    • @TheClassicWorld
      @TheClassicWorld Рік тому +2

That is a solid idea for somebody who only wants to spend $100 on the books and dice, etc. You can technically use anything else after that, as long as you know what they are, and what their weapons are, etc. You could also paint them roughly to be Orks, etc., and make up at least 3 armies for almost zero cost. Saves you $100-400 per army, for sure. This is ideal for large-scale 40k (not that this really exists anymore). Of course, I personally hate the idea, and I am more than happy to pay $5 per little GW mini, haha.
Of course, I remember when 'HQ' minis were metal and only cost $5 each; now they are $25. 5 times the cost. That's a big jump over just 10 years of the market. Part of that is the nature of being such a mega company, and then the other natural reasons for it. It also may or may not cost them more money now than before (I've not looked into that). I remember, also, when you could buy 20 Ork Boyz for about $20. Now, 20 Ork Boyz are about $70. Around 4 times the cost...
Some things are largely unchanged, though, in both model and price, such as certain Skaven and Ogre minis, and many others. They are about 2 times the cost at most now, which makes sense since it's been 10-12 years. Kroot are fairly priced, too, from what I remember. Orks were decently priced until they just massively jumped up and had new models put out. I'm guessing it cost them a lot of money for new machines and designs, etc. -- and Orks are quite popular, so they can easily put the prices up a bit. Generally, it's a play-to-win game of sorts. The best minis cost the most. This has been true for a long time, for almost every army. I don't have much of a problem with this: they are capitalists, more power to them. And, for gamers, it makes some sense: people like to spend money on a really good Space Marine. At least, it used to mean something, maybe it doesn't anymore? I don't know... I've not played 40k in over 12 years, hahaa. I heard about zero complaints back then, though (and back then, prices were still quite high compared to many other hobbies of the day). But, man, did you get a lot of plastic for your money.
I now see armies of about 20 models, mostly 30-year-old men playing Kill Team or Sigmar -- assuming I see anybody playing it, anywhere these days. In 2008, I recall the store being filled almost daily with 30 people, and each of them had 100+ models and 1-2 armies (typically 40k, or one of each sometimes). Some guys would easily run into 200-300 models. Good times. Good luck buying 150 Orks today without breaking the bank: and good luck even playing them in current 40k, haha.
Note: The only problem would be the non-unit stuff. You'd have to buy something else to be 'tank', 'bike', and so on.

Using proxies is honestly always a great idea and I really recommend it to especially newer players before going down the rabbit hole of getting the actual miniatures. I've seen some people spend hundreds into this or similar hobbies then all of sudden realize yeah it's not for me.
Another thing to do too before even buying a book. Check out for a local wargaming store. I don't know about other cities. But the one I live in there's a couple that have always existed not just with a full tables ready for players to skirmish on. But they also usually had miniatures to borrow and even had free lessons day. Helping people learn and get back into the hobby easier.

like here's my question : how the heck do CPs work? A video explaining command points and how are generated and used would be awesome. Like I've watched a lot of 40k battles and i never know how CPs are calculated, what the hell "battle-forged" is, detachments, all that stuff. thats what i'd love a clear simple explanation for.

    • @isaiahgrey2458
      @isaiahgrey2458 4 роки тому +20

@@garyburke6156 Do you have a copy of the rulebook (the large one with lots of fluff)? In the 'advanced rules' section it explains all of that. Basically 'Battle Forged' means all of your models are from the same faction (so if you run only Ultramarines you'll have a battle forged Ultramarines army). You start with 3 CP for simply fielding a Battle-Forged army but you can get bonus CP by organizing your units into Detachments. A Detachment is a specific combination of models. For example, fielding 1-2 HQ units and 1-3 Troops units will form a Patrol Detachment. This is too small to gain bonus CP, but is the easiest detachment to form. Bigger detachments (E.G a Battalion is, I think, 9-12 Troops, 4-8 Elites, and 3-5 HQ's) will give you CP.
I know I flubbed the troop numbers in that example since I don't have my rules with me but that's how it works. You need to field combinations of units from the same faction to get additional CP. Again, in the official rulebook it's in the 'Advanced Rules' section and I'm sure you can find the info online. Hope this helps.

The rules for 40k Tabletop confuse me but this video is helping me figure them out.
Feedback is appreciated to confirm/correct my notes.
The *Advance* movement mechanic seems to be like in the XCOM games where units have 2 action points. Ideally this is one point for normal movement then the other for shooting but the second point can be spent to move further than normal. This is called Sprinting in XCOM.
The way *Ranged Attacks* work seems to go: Range check > hit success check > kill success check > target resist check.
*Rapid Fire* weapons can double their amount of potential hits at the cost of halving their range.
The *Morale* mechanic/Phase is pretty interesting. Enemy models may flee at the end of your turn if your dice check exceeds their highest Leadership stat. Taking out only one model, therefore adding just +1 to the Morale check, when that unit has 7+ Ld might be a guaranteed fail. Multiple kills means +1 per killed model which may push the Morale check higher than the enemy's Ld stat. One enemy is removed for each point over the enemy's Ld stat. (9 beating 7 means 2 enemies are removed)
*Grenades/Flamers* work rather interestingly. 6+ check for amount of hits then check for getting through Toughness.
So in this game; *Overwatch* is defensive shooting check of 6+ used when an enemy attacks in their Charge Phase.
*Charge* is a 2 dice check for move distance of the Charge; minimum 2, max 12.
*Fight* phase is similar to Shooting but for melee combat instead of ranged. Units can move toward target if 3 or less inches away. This phase allows both sides to attack but the side who used the Charge goes first.
*Melee combat* uses the Attack skill for amount of potential kills while Weapon Skill determines minimum dice roll needed for the attack success check. A similar check is done for Strength stat vs Toughness stat; the greater difference determines if higher or lower dice rolls are needed. Low rolls for if your attack is greater, high rolls for if their defence is higher.
*Armor Piercing* reduces enemy Toughness so lower checks can succeed in killing an enemy.
*Psychic* skills/attack are a whole other kettle of fish that vary from skill to skill so i can't work those out for now, at least in detail. Basic play is 2D check to exceed a Warp complication (Failed checks may have your model get executed by an "allied" Commissar if one is in play) Enemy Psyker unit, if one is in play, can deny your attack if their 2D check exceeds yours.
*Mortal Wound* attacks work like normal but the enemy cannot roll to save their units unlike normal attacks.
*Psychic Maelstrom* is a guaranteed kill on a check than can be chained on success, each check needing a higher minimum roll. (2+ then 3+, 4+, 5+ and finally 6+ for a total of 5 kills if successfully chained)
    ------
I should copy these notes down somewhere for future reference since i tend to be a bit forgetful/absent-minded.

TLDR of my first impression with Warhammer. "Very refreshing & exciting"
Just spent almost $200 yesterday in an official Warhammer store in Boston.
I bought some paints and a Start Collecting! Necrons ( to go with my Space Marine Adventures )
    First impression.
It's night and day compared to a Yugioh store as far as the smell goes LOL! Anyway,
The shelves are almost full and there's a lot of displays to either inspire your or scare you.
The prices of the kits are steep but there's a reason ( Production Quantity and POINTS! )
The manager is very welcoming. From the phone to my entry to the store. He even showed me the correct parking spaces..
There are people that are playing, there's a guy that's painting a manager that's welcoming.
In my opinion, a hobby store where the hobby is actually being played or done is definitely healthy because it doesn't just attract customers
it also gives me a positive vibe knowing that I will have someone to play with or simply talk to in the future...
    Next - The displays.
The beautiful pieces gave me an awareness of where I am at and where I want to be..
I got overwhelmed because I realized how far the gap is between the pros and my self.
I heard that "it's not good to compare your self to PROs because it will make you feel frustrated when you fail to reach their level"
It's true, I felt it, but I could not stop my self from comparing my self. So I stopped and set some goals to clear my mind ( believe it or not it helped me earlier at work, it didn't feel like its Monday )
Now I feel like I'm ready to accept any challenge. I'm kinda like at the last "A" of DABDA. Which is the most dangerous stage Haha! Google DABDA if you wanna get my reference. If you're also a Nurse, you don't need to google it...
    Lastly is the game play.
This video's timing can't get any better. I would really like to play or at least understand what's going on in any Battle Reports.
Now, I understand the game way better than yesterday.
Going back to the store, the players were serious however they were also having fun.
And if they're confused with something, the manager is always there to answer their questions.
Extra opinion. Warhammer requires time, patience, art skills and of course MONEY!

Welcome to the hobby! Here's a couple of tips to save shitloads of money in 40k that I honestly wish I knew when I started:
      - Get generic small brushes on Amazon or from your local craft store (They're just as good, and astronomically less expensive) for painting your figures
      - Use Gorilla Glue or Krazy Glue on all your figures (I use Gorilla from a craft store that often emails 40%-50% off coupons), not GW's glues
      - DO NOT USE CITADEL PAINTS. Use Vallejo, Reaper Master Series, or Army Painter. They're just as good, cost less, come in a better size, and most importantly are dropper bottles (The paint lasts longer). The only GW stuff I get anymore is their Contrasts which are admittedly quite good.
      - Use either Rustoleum Chalked spray or Krylon Camouflage Fusion spray as primer. They're better and incredibly less expensive than Citadel spray primers (And I've tested a lot in my time painting, those are the top two in my experience)
      - Try and get all the minis you can second-hand from eBay, local Craigslist listings, or even fellow gamers you meet! People are swapping out old armies for new ones all the time! This is the least reliable method but oh boy when you find a squad of $40 figures for $20 and all you have to do is strip their paint, it's worth it.
      - If you look hard enough, you may find the rulebooks and army books you need outside of the physical store...
      BONUS:
      - If you want to texture the bases of your figures, use Elmer's wood filler, not texture paints! The stuff is amazing!
Sorry for the lengthy blurb but since you've just entered the wonderful and horrifyingly expensive world of Warhammer, I wanted to at least try and give some $$ saving tips!

Roll 1d6 starting at 3+ for a success to keep moving him to battle, add 1 for every round of movement to represent Cains increasingly desperate attempts to be somewhere else. On 3 successful rolls Cain begrudgingly raises his chainsword and gives an inspirational speech to the troops granting an additional -1 to the guardsmen's ballistic skill and weapon skill within 6"of the speech making a hit on 3+. Cain is pushed to the front to lead the battle as a ultra competent marksman and swordsman. Hiting on 3+'s, Cain has 4 attack and gets a plus 1 for using his chainsword being one of the greatest swordsman in this part of the galaxy. His skill with a laspistol is quite incredible as well and has an increased range of 6". If you fail one of your drag Cain to combat rolls the magnificent Commissar Cain tells the guardsmen that he heard that their flank has been compromised and has to stop it. Very informative, simple, and easy to follow video. I was looking for a breakdown tutorial of basic gameplay like this but only found complicated battle reports. I don't play 40K yet but I'm very much looking forward to building an Ork army in the future. This looks very fun.

This is a great tutorial, you covered everything so clearly and effectively. It reminded me of going into games workshop as a kid and playing a demo match. I'm definitely showing this to all my friends if they want to learn how to play.

I am exceptionally new to Warhammer 40k. I've never played, but a lot of my friends are fans and I've seen some lore videos here on UA-cam, so I've been considering getting into it. This video is a big reason as to why there's a good chance I might start playing. Everything was very concise and easy to follow, it made the whole scale of it a lot less intimidating. Well done!

Excellent vid lads, really good job at covering the super-basic stuff some of us players may look over as obvious, but to a noob would be possibly confusing!
