This is really a gospel song written by Al Green. Listen to the lyric, it's about baptism and redemption. Brilliantly done by Delbert. I'm an atheist but there's no denying this is one of Reverend Al's great compositions. And IMO there is no blue-eyed soul singer to equal Delbert. He's astounding.
I was lucky to get/find a VHS recording of that TV show from 1989 and now I am almost finished transferring all songs into that playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLDFHRFQ96rmTRrzZE2EQvTc4OWE2dvk12.html
this doesn't come close, but look up the versions by 'eric clapton & steve winwood at the ARMS concert in 1983, and WC Clark with Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1989, those blow this away.
How can people not dance to this song!?
Absolutely love love love his soulful raspy voice! There is no one who compares to Delbert!!
Nobody can duplicate that voice. One of the best.

Great Song but this is the best version I've ever heard of this song
I agree! The energy on the studio version is unmatched by original writer Al Green and cover recording by The Talking Heads!

I think THIS is what Pharrell was thinking about when he had Sawyer sing this on The Voice.

I don't know who the make up artist was that did such a great job making Delbert look white but he did a heck of a job.
