Jesus, coming back to these videos after years has certainly been a treat. Jon, azure blade, icrangirl, all of them. Im really happy all of these are still here ^u^
God, there's a lofi quality to romhack videos that's really starting to show through. They're so genuinely unscripted, have lower quality mics, and this strangely anarchist vibe. I know that sounds dramatic, but our closet popular relative now is the curated Mario Maker. This just hits different, even more so after all this time.
Frantically remembering watching this 10 years ago and rushing to watch it again and still love every minute is a testament to the greatness of this video and ProtonJon himself
There's a massive different between how they're used in the original game and how they're used in difficult hacks. Usually in the original they were used to accent a secret in the stage, but 9/10 times in hacks they're used as cheap kills.
Jack Registeel Ah, okay. I know that feeling... I started working on mine several years ago and still haven't finished it because I keep taking reeeeally long breaks XD
Man....sometimes it's nice to go back to Jon's romhack videos and see where it all began. He was the first LP'er I ever saw, and still my favorite. I've probably gone back and watched all these hundreds of times, and I'll be damned if I ever stop.
My guess was that Proton Jon was being a smartass and didn't want to do the Kaizo type stages, so he stalled for a bit and chose the speed stages just so that he doesn't have to suffer through Kaizo once more.
Watching just the beginnings of Jon's videos from the start is awesome, you can watch his resignation grow with every new romhack as they break his spirit, one by one.
The first video of Jon's that I watched. The first Let's Player I ever watched. Before Markiplier and Jacksepticeye. I still find myself coming back to Jon's channel and watching all his old RomHack videos. I still love them.
I've played all three Kaizo Mario's and still like invisible blocks, but I like them much better when they are used not, to kill you, but like to prevent you from getting a 3up, or secret exit. I use them like that in my romhacks. Clever placement of invisible 1up blocks isn't used often either.
This was one of the first videos I watched on youtube, and yet I still remember this video so clearly. Also that "still 4 minutes left" got me, I almost forgot the youtube video length limit was a thing, and all the stuff you had to do just to get custom thumbnails
Wow this is old 2008 almost 17 years ago I was 14 in 8th grade still in middle school when this was uploaded i only had Original game back then with my old SNES
I'm impressed with this hack. I'm SO very glad that the designer didn't feel to need to make it overly hard in order to "impress" us. Personally, I don't mind invisible coin blocks, as long as they're not way too overused. ProtonJon has a point, but I DO think he blows them out of proportion sometimes.
I love invisible coin blocks when it comes to you, Jon....it makes me laugh because you ramble on for like 5 minutes about how you despise invisible coin blocks. Everytime I see you get one I laugh. xD
Super Mario Maker can never replace the experience of real rom hacks. Why? Because you can't use Chargin' Chucks! To this day I STILL wanna play that Koopa Koopa Mob level.
Going to have to try this one. The invisible block puzzles don't so much annoy me as just present a reason to constantly be on edge, and be prepared to always have a backup plan when jumping.
None taken. Honestly no one on this site gives criticism about videos here, they either love it or despise it with all of their soul and won't say why. So when someone actually gives me a REASON for not liking a video, it's refreshing.
Invisible coin blocks are the greatest. It is that same joy you get from (nerd alert) spending hours setting up a D&D game, rolling the dice once, and everyone dieing from a cavein/lightning strike/whatever. I know I am the last bastion of a losing fight here, but: -"forte" is a MiddleFrench word meaning "strength" pronounced "fohrt" -"forté" is an Italian word meaning "loud" pronounced "fortay"
Yes. and here, it only makes sense that in the Anglo culture it was originally called "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" by Proton's attitude. Otherwise, it was mostly just about invisible coin blocks.
"It landed on its corner" I was drinking at that time, and a whole lot of water came out of my nose, it was worth it though, since i was laughing for about 3 minutes straight, AWESOME!
Hey good commentary! Almost as fun as psystarcraft. Good points on the invisible blocks! I really like most challenges in Kaizo Mario but invisible blocks takes the fun out as you say =)
I think takeshi's revenge is the "revenge" of the TV show takeshi's castle. The 1st part with the wall is referencing it because on the show, the 1st challenge is to scale a large wall.
ROFL!!!!!! I think many small pieces out of the whole video are very funny. especially when you said "it does not rain football players in mario land" at 5:26
Takeshi's Castle was the name of the show, but the game was called Takeshi's Challenge. I think Jon references both in the video, so either's basically correctish.
"It does not rain football players in Mario land!"
I hate to break it to you, Jon, but this is Mario WORLD.
Football? I hear that's what you use to save Africa from not-zombies.
BiancaShiro In addition, I always thought they were 'baseball catchers', not footballers (of any nature), despite the charging.
"FOOOOTBALLLLLL"
DEET DEET!
ProtonJon's channel is the Alpha of "Send me your Mario Maker levels"
Do yo notice the similarities between bullshit Mario hacks and Mario Maker levels?
@@hoovy5147 still is
@@hoovy5147 yeah, except the mario maker levels are bullshit and hacks are good
Didn't he stop because someone pretended to be terminally ill to have Jon play his levels?
Jon is the reason I started watching lets plays :)
Same here! Him and chuggaconroy.
I actually first watched his Kaizo Special Stage video before I had even heard of Let's Playing... So yeah, he got me into it, too!
TRG!
Remember when most let's plays were Mario romhacks and we could at least imagine that the big video game developers were run by cool people.
Then Twitter happened
even 12 years later i still consistently quote this video.
Jesus, coming back to these videos after years has certainly been a treat. Jon, azure blade, icrangirl, all of them. Im really happy all of these are still here ^u^

Like I was 10 when this came out and now I have a college degree
There's a massive different between how they're used in the original game and how they're used in difficult hacks. Usually in the original they were used to accent a secret in the stage, but 9/10 times in hacks they're used as cheap kills.
years later, the yoshis island cart would come back in full force
7 years ago... Damn. This got me into Romhacking.
Same. To be exact, it was his Mario's Wacky World LP that first made me decide to try making my own.
179marioyoshi971 Lol I was too young back then to be watching him, I still have my old drawings for my made up hack "Big Boo's Revenge."
Jack Registeel Huh, I think I've played part of a romhack with that name before!
179marioyoshi971 Oh nice. Guess someone got it before me. I started map development and shortly got bored.
Jack Registeel Ah, okay. I know that feeling... I started working on mine several years ago and still haven't finished it because I keep taking reeeeally long breaks XD
5:54-6:04
Accurate representation of my PE class in football when I have the ball.
+MrDrProfessorRabbit
I'm picturing that one gif of Jack Sparrow running away from natives, except with football players.
It’s raining chucks hallelujah it’s raining chucks
I agree, invisible blocks are just a cheap tactic to make easy rom hacks harder.
Nice reference.
Man....sometimes it's nice to go back to Jon's romhack videos and see where it all began. He was the first LP'er I ever saw, and still my favorite. I've probably gone back and watched all these hundreds of times, and I'll be damned if I ever stop.
how a game cartridge being flipped managed to land on its corner is beyond my understanding of physics
Jon is my spirit animal.
+Matthew Stroup
Waluigi is your spirit animal by proxy.
The first video of Jon's that I watched. The first Let's Player I ever watched. Before Markiplier and Jacksepticeye. I still find myself coming back to Jon's channel and watching all his old RomHack videos. I still love them.
That second level has so many of Chris Redfield's family members and clones.
FOOTBALLLLLL.
Jon's just brilliant, since all of his humor is natural, it's not forced. My favorite UA-cam LPs by far.
I've played all three Kaizo Mario's and still like invisible blocks, but I like them much better when they are used not, to kill you, but like to prevent you from getting a 3up, or secret exit. I use them like that in my romhacks. Clever placement of invisible 1up blocks isn't used often either.
1upclock, the legend will never die :D
Looks like Mario declared war on the NFL in that second stage. XD
it feels nostalgic watching 10 min videos again. Reminds me of the old ways of youtube....
This was one of the very first videos I ever watched on youtube. respects
lmao its hilarious seeing you rage at the invisible coin blocks. maybe that's what rom hackers are going for. xD
Even in 240p this still looks like HD
2nd level with football players, epicly funny and awesome to watch.
This was one of the first videos I watched on youtube, and yet I still remember this video so clearly. Also that "still 4 minutes left" got me, I almost forgot the youtube video length limit was a thing, and all the stuff you had to do just to get custom thumbnails
Does the video look like a higher quality than 240p, or is it just me?
this game is rendered at 240p anyways :P
Wow this is old 2008 almost 17 years ago I was 14 in 8th grade still in middle school when this was uploaded i only had Original game back then with my old SNES
Wow, eight years and there was no change whatsoever in Jon's voice. Perhaps a bit lower-pitched now, but largely it's the exact same.
+Gunner193 Well he's in his early 30s now I believe, probably not gonna have his voice change much at all for quite a while.
Thunder Ryu Maybe, I wouldn't know.
Good times, soon to be remastered.
For fun I hope.
I vow to only use those invisible blocks at the start and end of levels for fun though.
Not sure how I missed these. I could have swore I'd seen most of your rom hack videos. This one looks fun as hell. In a masochistic kind of way.
8 years, jeez I feel old...
How about now?
"Chocolate death... Chocolate brain, some stay dry and others feel the pain!" I subscribed to you because of awesome stuff like this!
Jasper: Invisible coin blocks are just a cheap tactic to make rom hacks harder!
-redo- Jasper: Invisible coin blocks are just a cheap tactic to make weak romhacks stronger!
happy 10 year anniversary Proton Jon!
MarioMaker is going to be fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun
I almost wish it was still 2008... Im currently working on a rom hack myself and really want protonjon to test it out in a lets play.
Takeshi is refering to Takeshi's chalenge
hahaha I've watched this about 5 years ago, seeing it now still makes me laugh.
this guy hates hidden coin blocks
you know, at least in this romhack, it seems like he put the invisible coin blocks for a reason other than just a cheap way to make it harder
Ridiculous that's ridiculous. Nothing is more ridiculous than ridiculousness. How ridiculous are you?
dude, youtube recommended me this old video. damn i remember watching it when it came out.
Wow the SNEStalgia
I love invisible coin blocks when it comes to you, Jon....it makes me laugh because you ramble on for like 5 minutes about how you despise invisible coin blocks. Everytime I see you get one I laugh. xD
Super Mario Maker can never replace the experience of real rom hacks. Why? Because you can't use Chargin' Chucks! To this day I STILL wanna play that Koopa Koopa Mob level.
Protonjon.thank you
You introduced me to lets plays and set a high bar.you're the best
This isprobably one of my fave videos of yours.
That second lvl is one of the best romhacks lvl I have ever seen
I like this one. It's not the ridiculous type of challenging. The speed paths seem quite fun, actually!
Going to have to try this one. The invisible block puzzles don't so much annoy me as just present a reason to constantly be on edge, and be prepared to always have a backup plan when jumping.
Okay, just gotta say this; Homg, you know MXC. I used to love that show, a few years back, when it still aired on Spike TV.
None taken. Honestly no one on this site gives criticism about videos here, they either love it or despise it with all of their soul and won't say why. So when someone actually gives me a REASON for not liking a video, it's refreshing.
Invisible coinblocks aren't for annoyance, it's for a good laugh. XD
Love the commentary.
Invisible coin blocks are the greatest. It is that same joy you get from (nerd alert) spending hours setting up a D&D game, rolling the dice once, and everyone dieing from a cavein/lightning strike/whatever.

FLOATING AND STACKED MUNCHERS!
Charging Chuck, the best enemy in any Mario game :D
"It does not rain football players in Mario land!"
Makes me lol every time I see it.
I believe it landed against the leg of my desk standing up.
Yes. and here, it only makes sense that in the Anglo culture it was originally called "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge" by Proton's attitude. Otherwise, it was mostly just about invisible coin blocks.
"It landed on its corner"
I was drinking at that time, and a whole lot of water came out of my nose, it was worth it though, since i was laughing for about 3 minutes straight, AWESOME!
Ah...the good old days. I want to see this guy play Mario Maker.
Hey good commentary! Almost as fun as psystarcraft. Good points on the invisible blocks! I really like most challenges in Kaizo Mario but invisible blocks takes the fun out as you say =)
How fitting that jon talks about yoshis island
this video plus his commentary is just great!!
put it in my faves...
I still remember when I watched Jon’s videos while eating tons of cookies
Wow. The path you took looks awesome, even despite those invisible blocks.
i loved the second stage, loved the raining football guys
CASE IN POINT: I AM YELLING.
That's gotta be my favorite line you ever said in your videos.
i love the part where the charging chucks fall from the sky
this and wacky world are definitely the most memorable rom hacks he did
And Kaizo.
"It doesn't rain Charging Chucks in Dinosaur Land."
- Someone unrelated to Jon -
Watching this since 2010-2011...
so old me...
The "Inny Minnie Run-Away" line makes me laugh every time. I miss these, I miss Jon videos period.
Miss you Jon, Hope all is well with you.
Let's play Furiously Hard Mario! Looks... Ridiculously Ridonculous! Plus you're not alone with the invisible blocks!
...I don't think Jon understands, but the invisible coin blocks are hilarious for us...
LOL. "it landed on its corner."
you rock.
All I can think about when hearing Takeshi is Takeshi's Castle. Which is awesome, as is Craig Charles.
I think takeshi's revenge is the "revenge" of the TV show takeshi's castle.
The 1st part with the wall is referencing it because on the show, the 1st challenge is to scale a large wall.
XD i love how at 1:34 ish you said it landed on its corner and the music made its note change into the sad part xD
At least you can see those piranha things coming. With invisible coin blocks, you don't see them until it's too late.
Dude seriously with the coin blocks. We get it.
Oh hey, I didn't know about this hack. And you're a funny guy when it comes to LP's it seems. Subscribed, my friend ;)
It's nice to find a "Let's Play" that doesn't suck...
ROFL!!!!!! I think many small pieces out of the whole video are very funny.
especially when you said "it does not rain football players in mario land" at 5:26
Your reactions in this video are PRICELESS!
I think that is the funniest gag, raining football players.
The maker had some great invisible block placement.
Invisible coin blocks are declared "Artificial Difficulty" by Proton Jon. xD
Oh shit I was recommended this Around 10 years after its release
this game looks awesom, better done than a lot of games i´ve seen
im just re watching a bunch of your old vids... and yep they are still funny
Takeshi's Castle was the name of the show, but the game was called Takeshi's Challenge. I think Jon references both in the video, so either's basically correctish.
I guessed Halo when you said, "Guess what we're playing today."
This looks insane!
first level with the raining football koopas was friggin hillarious! lol
