25 years old and already has a style entirely her own. And the skill of playing finger-style with complex chords and syncopated rhythms while singing... Can't get over how good she is, and can scarcely imagine where she'll take it 10 years from now! -Chris Rockett
@Ian Ray Just because she's tuned down to C doesn't mean she's playing Neon, dude. She's leaning more toward Joni Mitchell than anything Mayer-related.
It’s a trio, the guitarist (or one of them, no bass here, as she’s straddling tasks) is singing. The idea of a guitar trio with the guitarist singing long predates John Mayer. Kind of a glib parallel. It is true though that Mayer is a huge fan of hers
why on earth such an outrageously talented artist like madison got so little subscribers??? her guitar playing skills combined with absolutely precise voice control is just perfect... mad respects for this girl...
Its just one of those truly perfect songs. Not a single note out of place. The dynamics and groove are spot on. One of those tunes that other artists will say "Damn I wish I wrote that!"
I saw Madison open for Punch Brothers in 2018 at Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain NC. She was amazing! I'm just now getting back into her stuff and catching up and wow, I've missed some really awesome music.
Definitely hear some Joni influence and a little Sco with the dirty wet tone and dissonance and also a little Bill Frisell with his use of beautiful dissonance via polychords.
@@rhmayer1 I don't know. I don't get nearly as much Joni as people say. I hear more groove than Joni, less folk. Also, some of her other tunes scream Beatles.
@@Matarman Yes, more groove than Joni. But I guess the Joni I hear is in the very free vocal range - very fluid, and the somewhat whimsical, personal lyrics. I mean, she's NOT Joni, of course. But I just hear an influence. Qualities of her voice, texture, some of the advanced harmonic sense of contrast with the music. Listen how at the beginning, after establishing that groove with that riff, she then comes in with the vocals - with the flat 7! It's a gorgeous dissonance - an interesting, very uncommon pitch, contrasting with the riff, to start with. (But perfect for the song. Captivating.) That kind of adventurous harmonic sense is kinda Joni-ish. But more Joni-ish is what follows after that first vocal note, just the fluidity - rhythmically over the groove, floating around and intertwining with that groove riff. It just has that Joni sense of freedom and interesting non-standard sense of harmony in playful contrast with the music/riff.
Unbelievable! She got more going on than I've ever had in my wildest dreams. It's so fresh and unexpected, I'm 65 and i never expected to be surprised by anything again, then i came across this. Her "break down" tutorial if this song is well worth watching to give you a greater appreciation if what's actually happening in this song.
Her counterlines on her artificially tuned down Jazz Master are funky AF, let alone her ability to sing like an angel all while laying down these bass lines. (Ask this professional musician how hard that is to do.) It's bloody amazing.
NEW SUB WOW!!!!! I’m 68 years old and just discovered Madison at 3:45am!!! I am blown away (and, yes) I am a Joni Mitchell fan. But, Madison is all her own...what a genius artist talent 👍👍👍👍
hate to be negative, but this is pretty much the sounds of 10 years ago \: alabama shakes etc'. trap is not better, it's just new. that's what makes tame impala more popular. it just sounds more fresh. she is indeed skilled, however.
We (the like minded people) who appreciate craft, creativity and talent are turning away from the machine driven garbage that is being spewed out of late, and will always support artists like this.
I first heard her on the SiriusXM Beatles station (my go to) singing "In My Life". Having been smitten, I sought out more...I am now completely in love and awe!
Love this. This stripped down version makes me appreciate 1. the strength of the song itself. 2. The musicality is these musicians. 3. the full arrangement, which manages to only enhance, and not obscure, the fabulous bones of this tune.

How this hasn't made it high up the charts is a crime ! If this had a fraction of the airplay and marketing as some of the garbage on the charts today it would be in the top ten.

@Ian Ray Still miffed that nobody thinks she sounds like John Mayer Trio, eh? What an odd hill to cry and die on. Waaaaaaaahhh.
Just incredible. John Mayer sent me here, and of course I listened . My new inspiration right here. Mahalo
Finally something new, fresh air. Thanx to Rhett Shull who made me aware of this young woman.
Madison Cunningham is a genius. How on earth does she sing and play so masterfully at the same time?!

Tom Bukovac & Gordon Mote sent me over here. Glad they did.
Same here man! Should have known Gordon wouldn't lead us astray
Same here! Crazy good stuff. As a bass player I love all of the low end in this tune.

Damn, when I was listening to this song on Spotify, I did not expect that the singer would be doing that guitar riff and the singing at the same time.
She has one of those Greek or Roman goddess faces; the kind you see on ancient coins. Beautiful and talented. Amazing.

Joni Mitchell melodies, lyrics and phrasing plus John Scofield delicious dissonant chords. Perfect blend of great influences. Fantastic new artist.
